Abstract:In this paper we study the geometry of first time singularities of the mean curvature flow. By the curvature pinching estimate of Huisken and Sinestrari, we prove that a mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 with positive mean curvature is K-noncollapsing, and a blow-up sequence converges locally smoothly along a subsequence to a smooth, convex blow-up solution. As a consequence we obtain a local Harnack inequality for the mean convex flow.

Abstract:In this paper we study the regularity and singularity of the mean curvature flow of closed, smooth, embedded hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space with positive mean curvature, with an attempt to understand the geometry of first time singularities. First we consider the mean curvature flow of graphs and convex hypersurfaces. Then we consider the special blow-up solutions at the maximal mean curvature points and obtain self-similar solutions at type I singularities and translating solutions at type II singularities. Finally we show that a general blow-up sequence converges along a subsequence to a convex limit flow, and give a classification of ancient convex solutions. 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 53C44, 53A10, 35J60.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:Under the hypothesis of mean curvature flows of hypersurfaces, we prove that the limit of the smooth rescaling of the singularity is weakly convex. It is a generalization of the result due to G. Huisken and C. Sinestrari in [5]. These a-priori bounds are satisfied for mean convex hypersurfaces in locally symmetric Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature.

Abstract:Recently, Pipoli and Sinestrari [Pipoli, G. and Sinestrari, C., Mean curvature flow of pinched submanifolds of ℝℙ n , Comm. Anal. Geom. , 25 , 2017, 799–846] initiated the study of convergence problem for the mean curvature flow of small codimension in the complex projective space ℝℙ m . The purpose of this paper is to develop the work due to Pipoli and Sinestrari, and verify a new convergence theorem for the mean curvature flow of arbitrary codimension in the complex projective space. Namely, the authors prove that if the initial submanifold in ℝℙ m satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then the mean curvature flow converges to a round point in finite time, or converges to a totally geodesic submanifold as t → ∞. Consequently, they obtain a differentiable sphere theorem for submanifolds in the complex projective space.

Abstract:For any n-dimensional smooth manifold $\Sigma $, we show that all the singularities of the mean curvature flow with any initial mean convex hypersurface in $\Sigma $ are cylindrical (of convex type) if the flow converges to a smooth hypersurface $M_\infty $ (maybe empty) at infinity. Previously this was shown (1) for $n\le 7$, and (2) for arbitrary n up to the first singular time without the smooth condition on $M_\infty $.

Abstract:We show that for certain one-parameter families of initial conditions in $\mathbb R^3$, when we run mean curvature flow, a genus one singularity must appear in one of the flows. Moreover, such a singularity is robust under perturbation of the family of initial conditions. This contrasts sharply with the case of just a single flow. As an application, we construct an embedded, genus one self-shrinker with entropy lower than a shrinking doughnut.

Abstract:In this article we study the tangent cones at first time singularity of a Lagrangian mean curvature flow. If the initial compact submanifold Σ0 is Lagrangian and almost calibrated by ReΩ in a Calabi-Yau n-fold (M,Ω), and T>0 is the first blow-up time of the mean curvature flow, then the tangent cone of the mean curvature flow at a singular point (X0,T) is a stationary Lagrangian integer multiplicity current in R2n with volume density greater than one at X0. When n=2, the tangent cone is a finite union of at least two 2-planes in R4 which are complex in a complex structure on R4.

Abstract:In [5], Sáez and Schnürer studied the graphical mean curvature flow of complete hypersurfaces defined on subsets of Euclidean space. They obtained long time existence. Moreover, they provided a new interpretation of weak mean curvature flow. In this paper, we generalize their results to a general curvature setting. Our key ingredient is the existence result of general curvature flow with boundary conditions, which is proved in Section 4.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct solutions of Lagrangian mean curvature flow which exist and are embedded for all time, but form an infinite-time singularity and converge to an immersed special Lagrangian as $t\to\infty$. In particular, the flow decomposes the initial data into a union of special Lagrangians intersecting at one point. This result shows that infinite-time singularities can form in the Thomas--Yau `semi-stable' situation. A precise polynomial blow-up rate of the second fundamental form is also shown.

Abstract:It has long been conjectured that starting at a generic smooth closed embedded surface in R^3, the mean curvature flow remains smooth until it arrives at a singularity in a neighborhood of which the flow looks like concentric spheres or cylinders. That is, the only singularities of a generic flow are spherical or cylindrical. We will address this conjecture here and in a sequel. The higher dimensional case will be addressed elsewhere. The key in showing this conjecture is to show that shrinking spheres, cylinders and planes are the only stable self-shrinkers under the mean curvature flow. We prove this here in all dimensions. An easy consequence of this is that every other singularity than spheres and cylinders can be perturbed away.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the $\sigma_k$ curvature flow of noncompact spacelike hypersurfaces in Minkowski space. Without any symmetry assumptions, we prove that any solution that is C^3-close at some time to a standard neck will develop a neckpinch singularity in finite time, will become asymptotically rotationally symmetric in a space-time neighborhood of its singular set, and will have a unique tangent flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the generalized Lagrangian mean curvature flow in almost Einstein manifold proposed by T. Behrndt. We show that the singularity of this flow is characterized by the second fundamental form. We also show that the rescaled flow at a singularity converges to a finite union of Special Lagrangian cones for generalized Lagrangian mean curvature flow with zero-Maslov class in almost Calabi-Yau manifold. As a corollary, there is no finite time Type-I singularity for such a flow.

Singularity Models for High Codimension Mean Curvature Flow in Riemannian Manifolds

Abstract:We study the mean curvature flow of smooth $n$-dimensional compact submanifolds with quadratic pinching in a Riemannian manifold $\mathcal{N}^{n+m}$. Our main focus is on the case of high codimension, $m\geq 2$. We establish a codimension estimate that shows in regions of high curvature, the submanifold becomes approximately codimension one in a quantifiable way. This estimate enables us to prove at a singular time of the flow, there exists a rescaling that converges to a smooth codimension-one limiting flow in Euclidean space. Under a cylindrical type pinching, this limiting flow is weakly convex and moves by translation. Our approach relies on the preservation of the quadratic pinching condition along the flow and a gradient estimate that controls the mean curvature in regions of high curvature. These estimates allow us to analyse the behaviour of the flow near singularities and establish the existence of the limiting flow.

Abstract:This paper examines the dynamics of mean curvature flow as it approaches a cylindrical singularity. We reveal the mechanism for the isolatedness of cylindrical singularities in terms of the normal form of the asymptotic expansion of the rescaled mean curvature flow and formulate the notion of nondegeneracy of a cylindrical singularity.

Abstract:In this note, we will prove that given a sequence of Ricci flows. (M-k, g(k)(t)) of dimension n, t is an element of [-1, 0], with Ricci curvature bounded below uniformly and volume non-collapsing, (M-k, g(k) (0)) converge as a sequence of manifolds to a limit length space(X, d). The regular part of (X, d)must be open and the convergence is of C-1,C-alpha regularity. As a corollary of this result, we prove that in dimension 3, a Ricci flow can always extend unless either its Ricci curvature goes to -infinity or it shrinks to a point.

Abstract:We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.
