Abstract:In the mid-1960's a group of Benedictine monks at Saint John's Abbey and University in central Minnesota faced a challenge. They were wondering what could be done to preserve the precious hand-written religious books located in European monasteries and libraries. The devastation of World War II was a recent memory, and the potential loss of cultural material in the event of the Cold War suddenly turning “hot” was difficult to imagine. The monks had two goals: the preservation of the manuscript's contents and the creation of a means for scholars to easily access them. The task was daunting – thousands of manuscripts existed in dozens of Western European locations.

Abstract:Collection preservation is essential for the cultural status of any city. However, presenting a collection publicly risks damage. Recently this drawback has been overcome by digital curation. Described here is a method of digitisation using photogrammetry and virtual reality software. Items were selected from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow archives, and implemented into an online learning module for the Open University. Images were processed via Agisoft Photoscan, Autodesk Memento, and Garden Gnome Object 2VR. Although problems arose due to specularity, 2VR digital models were developed for online viewing. Future research must minimise the difficulty of digitising specular objects.

Abstract:The digitalization of library materials is now a widespread worldwide trend and a novel method for managing library collections, particularly in academic libraries. The paper explores many factors driving digitalization and provides insights into the process and criteria for selecting digitalization initiatives. Additionally, it addresses the many concerns and obstacles associated with the digitization process in academic libraries, including legal considerations and financial matters. This research investigates the evolving aspects of electronic resources and existing procedures related to their acquisition, selection, procurement methods, promotion, development policy, challenges, and future strategies. Additionally, it emphasizes the techniques used to obtain resources and the strategy for preservation. It also acknowledges the obstacles that hinder the digitization of academic libraries. Lastly, it concludes by stating that despite the challenges, in order to execute digitalization in a regulated and controllable way, information workers and librarians need to have both the practical abilities and the vision.

Abstract:In 2013–2014, Brooks Library at Central Washington University (CWU) launched library content in three systems: a digital asset-management system, an institutional repository (IR), and a web-based discovery layer. In early 2014, the archives at the library began to use these systems to disseminate media recently digitized from legacy formats. As the project progressed, the archives noted that these systems—while providing valuable storage and discovery capabilities—posed challenges when it came to metadata, interoperability, cost, preservation, and ease of access. This article details the experience of the archives in its first year using these systems.

Abstract:The development of reader devices and improvement of screen technology have made reading on screens less cumbersome. Our acts of reading are not univocal, as we read in many different ways with many different goals in mind. Reader software can provide different levels of navigation support for the manipulation of digital text, presenting capabilities for analytic reading not available in the print‐on‐paper reading experience and compensating for our lack of orientation and feeling of omnipotent dominance of text. The parameters of e‐text reading and the issues of access remain central to readers and researchers, whether the electronic text is designed and packaged as an “e‐book” for portable reading devices, or resides on a server for distribution to library terminals to be downloaded to desktop PCs, laptops or tablet PCs. The power and functionality of reading software – note‐taking, highlighting and indexing capabilities, robust open searching across databases – are ultimately linked to open access issues: interoperability, text standards, and digital rights management. These remain key questions for libraries, publishers and researchers.

Abstract:With the public emergence of the internet in the late 1980s and early 1990s, literary futurists predicted that fiction would shift to hypertext formats and the printed book would become archaic. As we now know, these predictions failed to materialize. Ebooks have plateaued at roughly twenty percent of book sales, with print remaining the dominant format.<sup><a href="#Fn1">1</a></sup> Instead, a new online infrastructure surrounding print books emerged. In <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">The Digital Literary Sphere: Reading, Writing, and Selling Books in the Internet Era</em>, Simone Murray provides a compelling introduction to this evolving domain. Adapting digital collection interface for special collections and archives collections and improving workflow

Abstract:This paper will address a recent project at Kent State University to adapt the interface of Special Collections and Archives Digital Collections to better reflect textual archival content. As our project team discovered, some of these changes also improved ingestion workflows and the quality of the optical character recognition as a result. Automated processes of creating PDF files and updating related finding aid pages will also be discussed. The visual presentation during the 2017 ASIST Annual Meeting will provide visitors the opportunity to view the digital collections and interact directly with the project through the live library website as outlined in this paper. The project to date is based on open source technologies, and our team actively works to share code back to the respective community.

Abstract:The China-US Million Book Digital Library Project (Million Book Project) is an international cooperation program between China and the US. However, one million digitized books are considered not to be the ultimate goal of the project, but a first step towards universal access to human knowledge. In particular, there are four challenges about the new way to analyze, process, operate, visualize and interact with digital media resource in this library. To tackle these challenges, North China Centre of Million Book Project (in Chinese Academy of Sciences) has initiated several innovative research projects in areas such as multimedia content analysis and retrieval, bilingual services, multimodal information presentation, and knowledge-based organization and services. In this keynote speech, we simply review our work in these areas, and argue that by technological cooperation with these innovation research topics, the project will develop a top-level digital library platform for the million book library.

Abstract:The Google Book Search Library Project has partnered with an array of impressive libraries, including Harvard University, the University of California System, University of Michigan, and the New York Public Library. The reasons for collaborating with Google to further book digitization are different for each library. Moreover, the exact way in which these libraries will use their own digital copies has yet to be decided for many of the libraries involved. While the Google Book Search Library Project remains controversial, the Google library partners are seizing an unprecedented opportunity to amplify the scale of their pre-existing digitization initiatives.
Understanding Archives: Towards New Research Interfaces Relying on the Semantic Annotation of Documents

Abstract:The digitisation campaigns carried out by libraries and archives in recent years have facilitated access to documents in their collections. However, exploring and exploiting these documents remain difficult tasks due to the sheer quantity of documents available for consultation. In this article, we show how the semantic annotation of the textual content of study corpora of archival documents allow to facilitate their exploitation and valorisation. First, we present a methodological framework for the construction of new interfaces based on textual semantics, then address the current technological obstacles and their potential solutions. We conclude by presenting a practical case of the application of this framework.

Abstract:This paper, which will be published in two parts, explores the physicality of archival materials in the context of the digital age. This first part reviews key lessons in the history of new technologies that have affected archival practice. The issues and problems we now face with conversion of physical archives to digital form are not entirely new. Throughout time, humans have gone through similar major transformations which affected not only culture and behavior but cognition in relation to information acquisition—the conversion from oral transmission to written or from locally available written media to mass-produced forms of communication are examples. This article provides a brief review of these historical processes and gives an overview of some of the lessons we can learn from them. Part Two (which will be published in the March 2011 issue of LIBRES) will explore a holistic understanding of paper-based knowledge transmission—specifically archives—in the context of the digital access movement.

The core Library Management Module streamlines book cataloging, user management, and inventory tracking, optimizing the operational efficiency of libraries. Concurrently, the Mobile App Module extends the library’s reach beyond physical boundaries, offering a user-friendly platform for on-the-go access to resources, virtual book clubs, and personalized recommendations. The Community Engagement Module fosters a vibrant literary community by facilitating discussions, author-reader interactions, and collaborative book recommendations. The Delivery and Rare Books Module ensures accessibility by enabling users to request book deliveries and notifying them of rare book availability. Furthermore, the User Profile and Customization Module empowers patrons to personalize their library experience, from user registration to preference settings. This research is not merely a technological overhaul but a gateway to a more dynamic and inclusive library ecosystem, embracing the digital age while preserving the essence of community, engagement, and the joy of reading. Institutional readiness for digital archives management at United States International University-Africa

Abstract:This article seeks to assess the readiness of the United States International University-Africa (USIU-A) to manage digital archives with a view to proposing strategies to enhance digital archives management at the institution. The study was informed by the Records Continuum Model, the Open Archival Information System Model and the Digital Curation Centre Lifecycle Model. A case study was used as part of a mixed-method research approach with a sample size of 120 respondents drawn from a population of 6937 by using systematic random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Questionnaires, interviews, observation and documentary review methods were used to collect data. Qualitative and quantitative data was presented and analysed thematically. The study revealed that the infrastructure required for digital archives management was not up to standard. Moreover, a myriad of challenges were unearthed which were found to potentially inhibit the management of digital archives. The study therefore concluded that although USIU-A had taken steps towards digital archives management, more still needed to be done for the institution to effectively manage its digital archives.

Abstract:Small museums play a pivotal role in Cyprus cultural landscape by carefully safeguarding and curating historical artifacts, thereby showcasing the country's rich heritage. However, in order to enhance accessibility to a wider audience, it is crucial to make these objects available online. This research aims to explore the effectiveness of the CyprusArk solution (a high-fidelity prototype) in enhancing the online presence of digitized artifacts within Cypriot small museums. By collecting and analyzing qualitative data from six out of ten classified as small museums, the study aims to demonstrate the potential of such solutions, specifically designed for small museums in Cyprus. CyprusArk is a Content Management System, serving as a stand-alone platform for each museum. Instances of the solution will be hosted, supported, and maintained at Cyprus national infrastructure in the high-performance computer facility (HPC), at The Cyprus Institute (CyI). The study has broader implications for the global museum sector, as it showcases the potential of new digital tools to enhance online access to cultural heritage resources and contribute to the dissemination of information "knowledge" among the broader population.

Abstract:Counter-archives, including those aligned to universities, have grown and developed as alternatives to the conventional and traditional mainstream archives. The purpose of this paper is to look into how such counter-archives are building and using their holdings. The study is based on two purposively selected counter-archives, which are the Sinomlando Centre and Memory Work in Africa and South African History Archive. The data were collected through interviews and document analysis, especially of the respective websites. One of the conclusions drawn from the paper is that counter-archives are here to stay as the general public is losing confidence in established traditional institutions.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the impact of ICTs, the Internet, and the Web on the life and work of people and mentions new services available through the convergence of computer and communication technologies. Also discussed are “digital determinism” in general and India's growing “digital divide” in particular. The paper discusses the promises and perils of the digital revolution. Comments are made on the library and information infrastructure, superstructure, and digitization initiatives in India. The paper concludes with the observation that only a suitable national policy for library and information systems can contain the emerging “digital divide” in India. Otherwise, networked information and library networks will have no meaning for the 47·79% Indians who are totally illiterate.

Abstract:The Internet has become increasingly an important source of information for pupils in learning, entertainment, sharing and exchanging experiences with other peers, meeting with adults and learning about other cultures. The Internet is a major force in the lives of school children and is no doubt having a tremendous influence on their reading habits and information seeking behaviour. With increased Internet connectivity however, concerns are being raised about the widening imbalances of access to ICTs between north information haves and the information have nots countries. This imbalance known as the digital divide has implications in terms of equity access to quality education in an electronic age. In Africa there are limited programmes that address in particular how schools can be equipped to benefit from the digital age and at the same time be used as an important instrument to bridge the digital divide. The concept digital divide was coined to describe the imbalance in access to information and communication technologies by different communities of people between different countries of the world. This phenomenon is today known to exist within individual countries, cities and even communities. Today schools are being seen as one of the most salient infrastructure that can be used to bridge the digital divide in our midst. This paper looks at developments in Africa aimed at bridging the digital divide through schools.

Abstract:The creation of the Artist Libraries Project was sparked by the observation that artist libraries are still not well known, yet many art historians are interested in this archive for the value it adds to understanding the person behind the artist and his or her creative process. The problem is that these libraries are rarely physically preserved. To remedy this dispersion, we built an online database and a website <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.lesbibliothequesdartistes.org" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> that house this valuable source in the form of lists of books and their electronic versions. First data on Monet's library was made available, and several additional artist libraries from the 19 th and 20 th centuries are on the way for 2019. By gathering all these bibliographical data in a central database, it's possible to explore one library and to compare several. This article explains how we built the database and the website and how the implementation of those IT tools has raised questions about the use of this resource as an archive on the one hand, as well as its value for art history on the other.
