Abstract:ZrO2 is one of the most stable metal oxides which is applicable to various chemical reactions in harsh environments. However, the photocatalytic performance of ZrO2 is relatively poor due to the negligible use of the solar spectrum caused by the wide bandgap (E-g = 5.3 eV). Here, we report plasmon enhanced Au nanoparticles decorated onto ZrO2 through a facile tannic acid-reduction method. The Au/ZrO2 heterojunctions exhibited efficient and stable photocatalytic activity of reducing CO2 into main CO and CH4, at the rates of 25.6 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) and 5.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) at most, respectively, approximately 6-fold enhanced compared to the pristine ZrO2, under simulated solar light. The reduction rates could also be improved over 10-fold under visible light when Au nanoparticles were loaded onto ZrO2. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra confirmed the enhanced visible-light absorption of Au/ZrO2 caused by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) and photocurrent tests proved the more efficient charge transport and electron-hole separation of Au/ZrO2 heterojunctions. This study demonstrates an effective strategy of LSPR effects to improve the photocatalytic performances of semiconductors.

Abstract:This work reported an Aux/BaTiO3 plasmonic photocatalyst with superior photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance under visible light irradiation compared to ordinary BaTiO3. This is mainly attributed to the introduction of plasmonic Au NPs, which improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers and further enhances the photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance of the catalyst through the hot electrons generated by the LSPR effect. The photocatalytic conversion rates of CO2 to CO and CH4 by Au5/BaTiO3 reached 62.3 and 20.7 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, Au-nanoparticle-supported crystalline ZnO (Au/ZnO) is found to be a simple and efficient photocatalyst for direct H2O2 synthesis in an aerated aqueous solution. Compared with widely studied Au-nanoparticle-supported anatase TiO2 photocatalyst, Au/ZnO shows almost one order of magnitude higher activity in H2O2 production. The site-specific deposition of smaller Au nanococatalyst on ZnO delivers best photocatalytic performance and the H2O2 production is relatively stable with a rate more than 1.5 mmol L-1 h(-1). The electron spin resonance studies reveal that the H2O2 is produced through direct 2e(-) oxygen reduction over the optimized Au/ZnO photocatalyst.

Abstract:Pt nanoclusters (Pt-C) on the surface of ceria-zirconia solid solutions exhibit superior low-temperature CO oxidation activity compared to Pt single atoms (Pt-1). However, the redispersion behavior of the Pt-C to Pt-1 lowers the efficiency of CO Oxidation. In this work, the stable surface hydroxyl groups were constructed by high-temperature hydrothermal aging treatment. Specifically, the Pt-1 catalyst (Pt/CZOe-SA) prepared by atom trapping was subjected to high-temperature hydrothermal treatment to obtain the stable Pt-C catalyst (Pt/CZOe-HT) with in-situ formed Pt-C. The experimental results showed that Pt-C with 2-3 nm size could achieve excellent low-temperature activity and thermal stability. In addition, the ab initio molecular dynamics and density functional theory calculations revealed the specific evolution process of dynamic dispersion for Pt-C with or without hydroxyl groups from the femtosecond scale, suggesting that the hydroxyl groups limited the dispersion of Pt-C in the form of "energy fence". The hydrothermal treatment not only introduced high-temperature stable hydroxyl groups to improve the stability of the in-situ formed Pt-C, but also optimized the ratio of Pt-1 and Pt-C, and then enhanced the low-temperature activity by the synergistic effect between Pt-1 and Pt-C. The present work can provide theoretical guidance for developing high-performance and high-stability Pt-based catalysts.

Abstract:Plasmonic antenna‐reactor photocatalysts sustain numerous photophysical and photochemical mechanisms that facilitate CO2 photocatalysis, including resonant plasmonic energy transfer, hot carrier injection, photothermal effect, forced plasmons, and/or synergistic pathways. Sunlight‐driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction provides intriguing opportunities for addressing the energy and environmental crises faced by humans. The rational combination of plasmonic antennas and active transition metal‐based catalysts, known as "antenna‐reactor" (AR) nanostructures, allows the simultaneous optimization of optical and catalytic performances of photocatalysts, and thus holds great promise for CO2 photocatalysis. Such design combines the favorable absorption, radiative, and photochemical properties of the plasmonic components with the great catalytic potentials and conductivities of the reactor components. In this review, recent developments of photocatalysts based on plasmonic AR systems for various gas‐phase CO2 reduction reactions with emphasis on the electronic structure of plasmonic and catalytic metals, plasmon‐driven catalytic pathways, and the role of AR complex in photocatalytic processes are summarized. Perspectives in terms of challenges and future research in this area are also highlighted.

Plasmonic Active "Hot Spots"-Confined Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with High Selectivity for CH4 Production

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have tremendous potential to be applied in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, since their localized surface plasmon resonance can collect low-energy-photons to derive energetic "hot electrons" for reducing the CO2 activation-barrier. However, the hot electron-driven CO2 reduction is usually limited by poor efficiency and low selectivity for producing kinetically unfavorable hydrocarbons. Here, a new idea of plasmonic active "hot spot"-confined photocatalysis is proposed to overcome this drawback. W18 O49 nanowires on the outer surface of Au nanoparticles-embedded TiO2 electrospun nanofibers are assembled to obtain lots of Au/TiO2 /W18 O49 sandwich-like substructures in the formed plasmonic heterostructure. The short distance (< 10 nm) between Au and adjacent W18 O49 can induce an intense plasmon-coupling to form the active "hot spots" in the substructures. These active "hot spots" are capable of not only gathering the incident light to enhance "hot electrons" generation and migration, but also capturing protons and CO through the dual-hetero-active-sites (Au-O-Ti and W-O-Ti) at the Au/TiO2 /W18 O49 interface, as evidenced by systematic experiments and simulation analyses. Thus, during photocatalytic CO2 reduction at 43± 2 °C, these active "hot spots" enriched in the well-designed Au/TiO2 /W18 O49 plasmonic heterostructure can synergistically confine the hot-electron, proton, and CO intermediates for resulting in the CH4 and CO production-rates at ≈35.55 and ≈2.57 µmol g-1 h-1 , respectively, and the CH4 -product selectivity at ≈93.3%.

Abstract:AbstractSelective CO2photoreduction to hydrocarbon fuels such as CH4is promising and sustainable for carbon‐neutral future. However, lack of proper binding strengths with reaction intermediates makes it still a challenge for photocatalytic CO2methanation with both high activity and selectivity. Here, low‐coordination single Au atoms (Au1‐S2) on ultrathin ZnIn2S4nanosheets was synthesized by a complex‐exchange route, enabling exceptional photocatalytic CO2reduction performance. Under visible light irradiation, Au1/ZnIn2S4catalyst exhibits a CH4yield of 275 μmol g−1 h−1with a selectivity as high as 77 %. As revealed by detailed characterizations and density functional theory calculations, Au1/ZnIn2S4with Au1‐S2structure not only display fast carrier transfer to underpin its superior activity, but also greatly reduce the energy barrier for protonation of *CO and stabilize the *CH3intermediate, thereby leading to the selective CH4generation from CO2photoreduction.
Plasmon photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions over Au particles on various substrates

Abstract:Surface plasmonic effects have been widely used in the photocatalytic reactions like CO2 conversion in the past decades. Owing to the significant controversy in the physical processes of plasmon photocatalytic reactions and difficulty in realizing CO2 reduction, however, the influence mechanism of plasmon effect on the CO2 photoreduction is still under debate. In this work, Au particles deposited on various substrates are employed to acquire insights into the plasmon photocatalytic CO2 reduction, including SiO2, n-Si, p-Si, TiO2-SiO2, TiO2-n-Si and TiO2-p-Si. It is found that the plasmon resonant enhancement (PRE) effect of Au-SiO2 caused by Au plasmon is stronger than that of Au-TiO2-SiO2 and Au-n-Si (Au-p-Si) in the visible-light range, while it is weaker for Au-n-Si (Au-p-Si) samples than Au-TiO2-n-Si (Au-TiO2-p-Si). The simulation results agree with the experimental conclusions. The photocatalytic results indicate that the catalytic activity of Au-n-Si (Au-p-Si) samples is lower than that of Au-TiO2-n-Si (Au-TiO2-p-Si), and Au-SiO2 is lower than Au-TiO2-SiO¬2 and Au-n-Si (Au-p-Si) samples, suggesting that here the direct electron transfer (DET) mechanism is dominant compared with PRE mechanism.

Abstract:Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

Abstract:The massive consumption of fossil energy leads to excessiveemissionsof CO2, which has caused global warming. Abstract:Confronting the challenge of climate change necessitates innovative approaches for the reduction of CO2 emissions. Metal-support interaction has been widely demonstrated to enable greatly improved performances in thermal-catalytic, photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. However, its applicability and specifically its role in the emerging piezo-electrocatalytic CO2 reduction are unknown, severely hampering the utilizations of piezo-electrocatalysis in CO2 conversion. Herein, by adopting Au particles supported on ZnO (Au/ZnO) as a paradigm, it is found that the metal-support interaction can remarkably improve the separation and transfer of piezo-carriers and enhance CO2 adsorption. As a result, Au/ZnO demonstrates a substantially boosted activity for piezo-electrocatalytic CO2 reduction and the optimal sample exhibits a 37.3% increase in CO yield compared to the pristine ZnO. The integration of metal-support interactions opens a new avenue to the design of advanced piezo-electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction.
In Situ Dispersed Nano-Au on Zr-Suboxides As Active Cathode for Direct CO2 Electroreduction in Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells

Abstract:CO2 electrochemical reduction in solid oxide electrolysis cells is an effective way to combine CO2 conversion and renewable electricity storage. A Au layer is often used as a current collector, whereas Au nanoparticles are rarely used as a cathode because it is difficult to keep nanosized Au at high temperatures. Here we dispersed a Au layer into Au nanoparticles (down to 2 nm) at 800 °C by applying high voltages. A 75-fold decrease in the polarization resistance was observed, accompanied by a 38-fold improvement in the cell current density. Combining electronic microscopy, in situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, we found that the interface between the Au layer and the electrolyte (yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)) was reconstructed into nano-Au/Zr-suboxide interfaces, which are active sites that show a much lower reaction activation energy than that of the Au/YSZ interface. The formation of Zr-suboxides promotes Au dispersion and Au nanoparticle stabilization due to the strong interaction between Au and Zr-suboxides.
TiO2-supported Au-Ag plasmonic nanocatalysts achieved by plasma restructuring and activation

Abstract:Plasmonic Au-Ag/TiO2 bimetallic nanocatalyst is regarded as a promising visible-light (VL) photocatalyst due to its wide light absorption and potentially enhanced activity. For its preparation, Au precursors usually contain Cl and co-impregnation/co-deposition suffers from AgCl precipitation, and consequently Au and Ag have to be sequentially supported. However, Au and Ag species of the sequential preparation are individually isolated and difficult to be homogeneously mixed. Here we report an Au-Ag plasmonic nanocatalyst achieved by plasma restructuring and activation from the sequential preparation. The isolated cationic Au and Ag species on the sequentially-prepared Au-Ag/TiO2 sample are restructured to be homogeneously mixed and highly activated by O2 plasma, which can be partially auto-reduced to Au-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles within the induction period of a few minutes in VL photocatalytic oxidation of CO. The Au-Ag plasmonic nanocatalyst exhibits a strongly enhanced activity in the VL photocatalytic reaction. The contribution of O2 plasma treatment and the enhancement mechanism for the Au-Ag plasmonic nanocatalyst are disclosed.

Abstract:An electric field in a photocatalytic system consisting of Au@TiO2 yolk-shell hollow spheres is created to enhance the generation of electron-hole pairs and remit the charge-carrier recombination. Local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-mediated local electromagnetic field nearby Au nanoparticles cannot only enhance the local generation and subsequent separation of electron-hole pairs in TiO2 shells to improve the photoreduction yield of CO2, but also facilitate chemical reactions involving multiple e(-)/H+ transfer processes to allow the formation of high-grade carbon species (C2H6), which was rarely observed in precedent CO2 photocatalytic reduction systems. The work may provide a new viewpoint for designing photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis involving multiple reactions.
Synergistic Effect in Plasmonic CuAu Alloys as Co-Catalyst on SnIn4S8 for Boosted Solar-Driven CO2 Reduction

Abstract:The photoreduction of CO2 to chemical fuels represents a promising technology to mitigate the current energy dilemma and global warming problems. Unfortunately, the original photocatalysts suffer from many side reactions and a poor CO2 conversion efficiency. The rational combination of active co-catalyst with pristine photocatalysts for promoting the adsorption and activation of CO2 is of vital importance to tackle this grand challenge. Herein, we rationally designed a SnIn4S8 nanosheet photocatalyst simultaneously equipped with CuAu alloys. The experimental results proved that the CuAu alloy can trap the electrons and enhance the separation and transport efficiency of the photogenerated carrier in the photocatalyst, alleviating the kinetical difficulty of the charge transfer process because of the preferable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Furthermore, the CuAu alloy works as the synergistic site to increase the CO2 adsorption and activation capacity. The optimized CuAu-SnIn4S8 photocatalyst exhibited a superior performance with CO generation rates of 27.87 μmol g−1 h−1 and CH4 of 7.21 μmol g−1 h−1, which are about 7.6 and 2.5 folds compared with SnIn4S8. This work highlights the critical role of alloy cocatalysts in boosting a CO2 activation and an efficient CO2 reduction, thus contributing to the development of more outstanding photocatalytic systems.

Abstract:Photo-catalytically reducing CO2 into valuable compounds is beneficial for both relieving the fossil fuel crisis and protecting the environment, and has become one of the hotspots in photocatalytic area recently. In this research, earth-abundant natural gas was adopted as the reductant, and visible light assisted CO2 reduction with methane (CRM) was selected as the probe reaction. The alloys between a group 8 metal and a group 11 element, PdAu alloy in this case, were developed as catalysts. It is found that, by increasing the content of Au in the PdxAuy alloys, the electronic structure of Pd could be gradually tuned to electron deficient, which favored the stability of the PdxAuy/Al2O3 catalysts in thermal-driven CRM with partially reduced activities. Meanwhile, the plasmonic absorption in visible light region and the electromagnetic field induced by hot electrons were enhanced in Au-containing PdxAuy alloys, which facilitated CO2 activation to oxygen radical and was regarded to be responsible for further accelerating the reaction rate with visible light irradiation. At the same time, the electronic structure and the stability of the catalysts remained nearly uninfluenced with extra light irradiation. With the co-assistance of electronic structure and plasmonic property of PdxAuy alloys, the stability of Pd90Au10/Al2O3 catalyst was effectively improved and the activity was not sacrificed compared with the reference Pd/Al2O3. The stability improvement strategy achieved in this work, together with the enhanced reactant activation capacity of group 11 elements, offers an avenue to synthesize catalysts with both enhanced catalytic stability and activity with visible light irradiation. This study provides promising approach for applying alloys in photo-driven or photo-assisted reaction systems.
Light-Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Activation and Conversion by Effective Plasmonic Coupling Effect of Pt and Au Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Photocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) is attractive for the production of valuable fuels and mitigating the influence of greenhouse gas emission. However, the extreme inertness of CO2 and the sluggish kinetics of photoexcited charge carrier transfer process greatly limit the conversion efficiency of CO2 photoreduction. Herein, we report that the plasmonic coupling effect of Pt and Au nanoparticles (NPs) profoundly enhances the efficiency of CO2 reduction through dry reforming of methane reaction assisted by light illumination, reducing activation energies for CO2 reduction ∼30% below thermal activation energies and achieving a reaction rate 2.4 times higher than that of the thermocatalytic reaction. UV-visible (vis) absorption spectra and wavelength-dependent performances show that not only UV but also visible light play important roles in promoting CO2 reduction due to effective localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) coupling between Pt and Au NPs. Finite-difference time-domain simulations and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy further reveal that effective coupling LSPR effect generates strong local electric fields and excites high concentration of hot electrons to activate the reactants and intermediate species, reduce the activation energies, and increase the reaction rate. This work provides a new pathway toward the efficient plasmon-enhanced chemical reactions via reducing the activation energies by utilizing solar energy.

Abstract:The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of oxygen-deficient WO3-x has been utilized for photocatalysis in the literature. A unique feature of WO3-x is that its plasmonic peak can be adjusted to the visible light range, which is close to that of typical plasmonic metals like Au. In this work, we have demonstrated the coupling effect of the SPR of WO3-x and Au can significantly alter the photocatalytic activity toward the gas phase nonoxidative methane coupling reaction in terms of the C2 product rate and selectivity. A photocatalyst composed of Au and WO3-x nanoparticles of comparable size is prepared by the simple Pechini method and thermal reduction in a H2 containing atmosphere. The SPR of Au can mainly promote C2H6 production, while the SPR of WO3-x can mainly increase the selectivity to C2H4. Combining two such strategies can give a composite photocatalyst with a higher C2 production rate and almost 100% selectivity to C2H4 under visible light. Detailed characterization reveals that the coupling of Au and WO3-x can effectively prolong the charge lifetime and the charge generation rate, and improves the hydrogen evolution activity, which results in much higher photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:CO2 electrochemical reduction in solid oxide electrolysis cells is an effective way to combine CO2 conversion and renewable electricity storage. A Au layer is often used as a current collector, whereas Au nanoparticles are rarely used as a cathode because it is difficult to keep nanosized Au at high temperatures. Here we dispersed a Au layer into Au nanoparticles (down to 2 nm) at 800 °C by applying high voltages. A 75-fold decrease in the polarization resistance was observed, accompanied by a 38-fold improvement in the cell current density. Combining electronic microscopy, in situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, we found that the interface between the Au layer and the electrolyte (yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)) was reconstructed into nano-Au/Zr-suboxide interfaces, which are active sites that show a much lower reaction activation energy than that of the Au/YSZ interface.
