Abstract:We review the multivariate holomorphic functional calculus for tuples in a commutative Banach algebra and establish a simple "naïve" extension to commuting tuples in a general Banach algebra. The approach is naïve in the sense that the naïvely defined joint spectrum maybe too big. The advantage of the approach is that the functional calculus then is given by a simple concrete formula from which all its continuity properties can easily be derived. We apply this framework to multivariate functions arising as divided differences of a univariate function. This provides a rich set of examples to which our naïve calculus applies. Foremost, we offer a natural and straightforward proof of the Connes-Moscovici Rearrangement Lemma in the context of the multivariate holomorphic functional calculus. Secondly, we show that the Daletski-Krein type noncommutative Taylor expansion is a natural consequence of our calculus. Also Magnus' Theorem which gives a nonlinear differential equation for the $\log$ of the solutions to a linear matrix ODE follows naturally and easily from our calculus. Finally, we collect various combinatorial related formulas.

Abstract:The notion of projection families generalizes the classical notions of vector and operator-valued measures. We show that projection families are general enough to extend the Spectral Theorem to Banach algebras and operators between Banach spaces. To this end, we first develop a Smooth Functional Calculus in Banach algebras using the Cauchy-Pompeiu Formula, which is further extended to a Continuous Functional Calculus. We also show that these theorems are proper generalizations of the usual result for operators between Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:We study dynamical optimal transport metrics between density matrices associated to symmetric Dirichlet forms on finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras. Our setting covers arbitrary skew-derivations and it provides a unified framework that simultaneously generalizes recently constructed transport metrics for Markov chains, Lindblad equations, and the Fermi Ornstein--Uhlenbeck semigroup. We develop a non-nommutative differential calculus that allows us to obtain non-commutative Ricci curvature bounds, logarithmic Sobolev inequalities, transport-entropy inequalities, and spectral gap estimates.

Sharp functional calculus for the Taibleson operator on non-archimedean local fields

Abstract:For any non-archimedean local field $\mathbb{K}$ and any integer $n \geq 1$, we show that the Taibleson operator admits a bounded $H^\infty(\Sigma\_\theta)$ functional calculus for any angle $\theta \> 0$ on the Banach space $L^p(\mathbb{K}^n)$, where $\Sigma\_\theta=\{ z \in \mathbb{C}^*: |\arg z| \< \theta \}$ and $1 \< p \< \infty$, and even a bounded H\''ormander functional calculus of order $\frac{3}{2}$ (with striking contrast to the Euclidean Laplacian on $\R^n$). In our study, we explore harmonic analysis on locally compact Spector-Vilenkin groups establishing the $R$-boundedness of a family of convolution operators. Our results enhance the understanding of functional calculi of operators acting on $L^p$-spaces associated to totally disconnected spaces and have implications for the maximal regularity of the fundamental evolution equations associated to the Taibleson operator, relevant in various physical models.

Harmonic and polyanalytic functional calculi on the $S$-spectrum for unbounded operators

Abstract:Harmonic and polyanalytic functional calculi have been recently defined for bounded commuting operators. Their definitions are based on the Cauchy formula of slice hyperholomorphic functions and on the factorization of the Laplace operator in terms of the Cauchy-Fueter operator $\mathcal{D}$ and of its conjugate $\overline{\mathcal{D}}$. Thanks to the Fueter extension theorem when we apply the operator $\mathcal{D}$ to slice hyperholomorphic functions we obtain harmonic functions and via the Cauchy formula of slice hyperholomorphic functions we establish an integral representation for harmonic functions. This integral formula is used to define the harmonic functional calculus on the $S$-spectrum. Another possibility is to apply the conjugate of the Cauchy-Fueter operator to slice hyperholomorphic functions. In this case, with a similar procedure we obtain the class of polyanalytic functions, their integral representation and the associated polyanalytic functional calculus. The aim of this paper is to extend the harmonic and the polyanalytic functional calculi to the case of unbounded operators and to prove some of the most important properties. These two functional calculi belong to so called fine structures on the $S$-spectrum in the quaternionic setting. Fine structures on the $S$-spectrum associated with Clifford algebras constitute a new research area that deeply connects different research fields such as operator theory, harmonic analysis and hypercomplex analysis.

Abstract:We introduce a sheaf theoretic viewpoint on functional analysis designed for infinite dimensional Lie group actions. We develop functional calculus for Banach valued functors and, in particular, prove the existence of an exponential map for a certain class of operators that generalise first order partial differential operators. This algebraic framework can be used in dynamical systems and KAM theory to provide normal forms and versal deformations. it is used in our papers on the subject such as the Herman conjecture paper, the versal deformation theorem for vector fields etc.

Abstract:This paper continues the study of spectral synthesis and the topologies $\tau_{\infty}$ and $\tau_r$ on the ideal space of a Banach algebra, concentrating particularly on the class of Haagerup tensor products of C$^*$-algebras. For this class, it is shown that spectral synthesis is equivalent to the Hausdorffness of $\tau_{\infty}$. Under a weak extra condition, spectral synthesis is shown to be equivalent to the Hausdorffness of $\tau_r$.

Differential Calculi on Commutative Algebras

Abstract:A differential calculus on an associative algebra A is an algebraic analogue of the calculus of differential forms on a smooth manifold. It supplies A with a structure on which dynamics and field theory can be formulated to some extent in very much the same way we are used to from the geometrical arena underlying classical physical theories and models. In previous work, certain differential calculi on a commutative algebra exhibited relations with lattice structures, stochastics, and parametrized quantum theories. This motivated the present systematic investigation of differential calculi on commutative and associative algebras. Various results about their structure are obtained. In particular, it is shown that there is a correspondence between first order differential calculi on such an algebra and commutative and associative products in the space of 1-forms. An example of such a product is provided by the Ito calculus of stochastic differentials. For the case where the algebra A is freely generated by `coordinates' x^i, i=1,...,n, we study calculi for which the differentials dx^i constitute a basis of the space of 1-forms (as a left A-module). These may be regarded as `deformations' of the ordinary differential calculus on R^n. For n < 4 a classification of all (orbits under the general linear group of) such calculi with `constant structure functions' is presented. We analyse whether these calculi are reducible (i.e., a skew tensor product of lower-dimensional calculi) or whether they are the extension (as defined in this article) of a one dimension lower calculus. Furthermore, generalizations to arbitrary n are obtained for all these calculi.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to study convergence of Bousfield-Kan completions with respect to the 1-excisive approximation of the identity functor and exotic convergence of the Taylor tower of the identity functor, for algebras over operads in spectra centered away from the null object. In Goodwillie's homotopy functor calculus, being centered away from the null object amounts to doing homotopy theory and functor calculus in the retractive setting.

Abstract:Over the decades, Functional Analysis has been enriched and inspired on account of demands from neighboring fields, within mathematics, harmonic analysis (wavelets and signal processing), numerical analysis (finite element methods, discretization), PDEs (diffusion equations, scattering theory), representation theory; iterated function systems (fractals, Julia sets, chaotic dynamical systems), ergodic theory, operator algebras, and many more. And neighboring areas, probability/statistics (for example stochastic processes, Ito and Malliavin calculus), physics (representation of Lie groups, quantum field theory), and spectral theory for Schr\"odinger operators. We have strived for a more accessible book, and yet aimed squarely at applications; -- we have been serious about motivation: Rather than beginning with the four big theorems in Functional Analysis, our point of departure is an initial choice of topics from applications. And we have aimed for flexibility of use; acknowledging that students and instructors will invariably have a host of diverse goals in teaching beginning analysis courses. And students come to the course with a varied background. Indeed, over the years we found that students have come to the Functional Analysis sequence from other and different areas of math, and even from other departments; and so we have presented the material in a way that minimizes the need for prerequisites. We also found that well motivated students are easily able to fill in what is needed from measure theory, or from a facility with the four big theorems of Functional Analysis. And we found that the approach "learn-by-using" has a comparative advantage.
Noncommutative Cantor-Bendixson derivatives and scattered $C^*$-algebras

Abstract:We analyze the sequence obtained by consecutive applications of the Cantor-Bendixson derivative for a noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A$, using the ideal $\mathcal I^{At}(\mathcal A)$ generated by the minimal projections of $\mathcal A$. With its help, we present some fundamental results concerning scattered $C^*$-algebras, in a manner parallel to the commutative case of scattered compact or locally compact Hausdorff spaces and superatomic Boolean algebras. It also allows us to formulate problems which have motivated the "cardinal sequences" programme in the classical topology, in the noncommutative context. This leads to some new constructions of noncommutative scattered $C^*$-algebras and new open problems. In particular, we construct a type $I$ $C^*$-algebra which is the inductive limit of stable ideals $\mathcal A_\alpha$, along an uncountable limit ordinal $\lambda$, such that $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}/\mathcal A_\alpha$ is $*$-isomorphic to the algebra of all compact operators on a separable Hilbert space and $\mathcal A_{\alpha+1}$ is $\sigma$-unital and stable for each $\alpha<\lambda$, but $\mathcal A$ is not stable and where all ideals of $\mathcal A$ are of the form $\mathcal A_\alpha$. In particular, $\mathcal A$ is a nonseparable $C^*$-algebra with no ideal which is maximal among the stable ideals. This answers a question of M. R\ordam in the nonseparable case. All the above $C^*$-algebras $A_\alpha$s and $A$ satisfy the following version of the definition of an AF algebra: any finite subset can be approximated from a finite-dimensional subalgebra. Two more complex constructions based on the language developed in this paper are presented in separate papers.

Abstract:In this note we highlight a common origin for many ubiquitous geometric structures, as well as several new ones by using only the functors of differential calculus in A.M Vinogradov's original sense, adapted to special classes of (graded) commutative algebras. Special attention is given to the particularly simple cases of diole and triole algebras and we show the latter environment is the appropriate one to describe calculus in vector bundles in the presence of a vector-valued fiber metric.

An exotic calculus of Berezin-Toeplitz operators

Abstract:We develop a calculus of Berezin-Toeplitz operators quantizing exotic classes of smooth functions on compact Kähler manifolds and acting on holomorphic sections of powers of positive line bundles. These functions (classical observables) are exotic in the sense that their derivatives are allowed to grow in ways controlled by local geometry and the power of the line bundle. The properties of this quantization are obtained via careful analysis of the kernels of the operators using Melin and Sjöstrand's method of complex stationary phase. We obtain a functional calculus result, a trace formula, and a parametrix construction for this larger class of functions. These results are crucially used in proving a probabilistic Weyl-law for randomly perturbed (standard) Berezin-Toeplitz operators.

Abstract:We introduce a trilinear functional of differential one-forms for a finitely summable regular spectral triple with a noncommutative residue. We demonstrate that for a canonical spectral triple over a closed spin manifold it recovers the torsion of the linear connection. We examine several spectral triples, including Hodge-de Rham, Einstein-Yang-Mills, almost-commutative two-sheeted space, conformally rescaled noncommutative tori, and quantum SU (2) group, showing that the third one has a nonvanishing torsion if nontrivially coupled.

Abstract:C*-algebras are widely used in mathematical physics to represent the observables of physical systems, and are sometimes taken as the starting point for rigorous formulations of quantum mechanics and classical statistical mechanics. Nevertheless, in many cases the naive choice of an algebra of observables does not admit a C*-algebra structure, and some massaging is necessary. In this paper we investigate what properties of C*-algebras carry over to more general algebras and what modifications of the Gelfand theory of normed algebras are necessary. We use category theory as a guide and, by replacing the ordinary definition of the Gelfand spectrum with a manifestly functorial definition, we succeed in generalizing the Gelfand-Naimark theorem to locally convex *-algebras. We also recall a little-known but potentially very useful generalization of the Stone-Weierstrass theorem to completely regular, Hausdorff spaces.

Abstract:Recently Dabrowski etc. \cite{DL} obtained the metric and Einstein functionals by two vector fields and Laplace-type operators over vector bundles, giving an interesting example of the spinor connection and square of the Dirac operator. Pf$\ddot{a}$ffle and Stephan \cite{PS1} considered orthogonal connections with arbitrary torsion on compact Riemannian manifolds and computed the spectral action. Motivated by the spectral functionals and Dirac operators with torsion, we give some new spectral functionals which is the extension of spectral functionals to the noncommutative realm with torsion, and we relate them to the noncommutative residue for manifolds with boundary. Our method of producing these spectral functionals is the noncommutative residue and Dirac operators with torsion.

Abstract:The main purpose of this work is the construction of an analytic functional calculus for Clifford operators, which are operators acting on certain modules over Clifford algebras. Unlike in some preceding works by other authors, we use a spectrum defined in the complex plane, and certain stem functions, analytic in neighborhoods of such a spectrum. The replacement of the slice regular functions, having values in a Clifford algebra, by analytic stem functions becomes possible because of an isomorphism induced by a Cauchy type transform, whose existence is proved in the first part of this work.

Abstract:Let $\cal M$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a distinguished faithful, normal, semi-finite trace $\tau$. We introduce the notion of equi-integrability in non-commutative spaces and show that if a rearrangement invariant quasi-Banach function space $E$ on the positive semi-axis is $\alpha$-convex with constant 1 and satisfies a non-trivial lower $q$-estimate with constant 1, then the corresponding non-commutative space of measurable operators $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has the following property: every bounded sequence in $E({\cal M}, \tau)$ has a subsequence that splits into a $E$-equi-integrable sequence and a sequence with pairwise disjoint projection supports. This result extends the well known Kadec-Pe\l czy\'nski subsequence decomposition for Banach lattices to non-commutative spaces. As applications, we prove that for $1\leq p <\infty$, every subspace of $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$ either contains almost isometric copies of $\ell^p$ or is strongly embedded in $L^p(\cal M, \tau)$.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate how to construct spectral triples for twisted group $$C^*$$ C ∗ -algebras of lattices in phase space of a second-countable locally compact abelian group using a class of weights appearing in time–frequency analysis. This yields a way of constructing quantum $$C^k$$ C k -structures on Heisenberg modules, and we show how to obtain such structures using Gabor analysis and certain weighted analogues of Feichtinger’s algebra. We treat the standard spectral triple for noncommutative 2-tori as a special case, and as another example we define a spectral triple on noncommutative solenoids and a quantum $$C^k$$ C k -structure on the associated Heisenberg modules.
