Abstract:Historically, literature for children and youth has been used as an effective tool to express utopian visions and dissemination of official ideologies. Youth literature is also revealing of ways that adults construe and construct childhood, influencing values, beliefs and images they wish to inculcate in young readers. This paper attempts to critically analyze contemporary international youth literature representing coming-of-age experiences during the Cultural Revolution by new immigrant Chinese writers. It explores why this significant political event has such a prevalent presence in contemporary English youth literature, how the Cultural Revolution has been represented in general, and how young people are portrayed in books addressing trauma, subjectivity, and different forms of personal agency. These eloquent narratives not only promote a point of view to interpret history in a given way, but also serve as instruments of political socialization and powerful agents of social change, essential for the development of adolescents and for the endorsement of democracy. Writing coming-of-age narratives is not only a lyrical elegy of exploring the catastrophic effects of historical events upon young people, but also a reminder to the world that the cataclysms of history cannot be forgotten and the historical lessons must be passed on to the later generations.
Re-understanding the Revolutionary Narration in "The Song of Youth"

Abstract:The revolutionary historical novels, which appeared during the 17 years after the People's Republic of China was founded (1949——1966), are the important production of contemporary literature. In these novels, there formed tense tension relationship between traditional forms and revolutionary narration, while tradition was once treated as the secondary position of "form". However, the practical reading effect of the novels in that period, together with the hot trend of "the red classics" which existed from the 1990s till now, has brought us favorable opportunities to re-understand these novels. Among the novels, the narration in "The Song of Youth" is especially outstanding. Analyzing the duet of traditional narration and revolutionary narration can be regarded as the special and typical announcement to the narration in "the red classics".

Abstract:Fiction in the history of modern Chinese literature has been increasingly dominating literary production, ranking the top among all the genres. Contemporary Chinese fiction is thus a universally recognized major literary genre that has long been practiced in a glocalized Chinese context although it has been largely influenced by its Western counterpart. Thus it has been qualified enough to dialogue with both classical Chinese fiction as well as Western texts. In this introductory article eminent contemporary Chinese novelists are also discussed in a historical and critical way with regard to their relations with world literature.
A REPRESENTATION OF THE MODERN CHINESE YOUTH IN YU DAFU ’ S NOVELS

Abstract:Abstract Yu Da-fu is a writer who marked the beginning of modern Chinese literature. Working as a member of Creation Society (Chuangzao she, 創造社), Yu became a pioneer of new style in Chinese literature in the sense that he initiated the new style of lyrical novels in Chinese literature and portrayed the awakening and frustrations of the modern self. As many young Chinese intellectuals did at the time, he developed the awakening of the modern self in the empire of Japan. Yu became a literary figure during his study in Japan, where he experienced diaspora by living right in the belly of the empire. He borrowed a form of modern Japanese literature, the “I-Novel (shishōsetsu, 私小說),” for his fiction, in a sense, mirroring in his novels his own life. Yu borrowed the form of I-Novel, a confessional genre, and created a representation of a modern Chineseyouth in diaspora. The stories of the “self” he created present both the awakening of the modern self and the frustration of diaspora. In this sense, Yu’s novels are important texts that show a representation of a modern Chinese youth in diaspora—how they have desired the empire and how they have failed.

Abstract:This chapter firstly addresses the spiritual core of Chinese traditional culture and Chinese contemporary vision of “a community of a shared future for mankind”. Then, we discuss the dialogue relationship between China and the world in the past, present, and future. After that, we explain the relationships between China’s modern education and the educational thoughts of other countries, and explain the development of modern and contemporary Chinese education under the influence of multiple cultures and bodies of educational thought. Finally, we explicate the academic pursuits and impact of two influential educational schools of thought in China and the United States in the transformation of modern society. These topics explain and situate the main theme of this book—the sister school project viewed from a Chinese perspective—in the world and its history.

Abstract:Modern Chinese literature is most open in the history of Chinese literature, with various Western literary currents and cultural trends flooding into China. As the most important and popular genre in Chinese literature, modern Chinese novel has been developing under the Western influence, and it has played a vital role in flourishing modern Chinese literature and enlightening modern Chinese intellectuals and the broad reading public. To the author, toward the end of the nineteenth century, Chinese literature was almost “marginalized”. In order to resume its lost grandeur it moved from periphery to centre by identifying itself with Western cultural modernity or modern Western literature. To realize this grand and ambitious aim, translating novel became an important task. In dealing with the Western influence, the author also reperiodizes twentieth-century Chinese literature: modern literature started with the May 4th Movement in 1919 and ended in 1976; since 1976, Chinese literature has been in the contemporary era, which is characterized by more postmodern than modern. In this global context, Chinese fiction writing has become part of world literature and been developing in a pluralistic direction.

The Summary of Studies on Yu Hua in the Recent Twenty Years

Abstract:From the first research paper "the January Fresh Wind" on Yu Hua to May,2007,the research work on Yu Hua has developed for 23 years.Up to the present,the studies are launched form five aspects: First,in the aspect of the writer's literature view,the "spirit of truth" which Yu Hua advocates and the departure of his novels from the present situation by "the false form" are the main issues.Second,it is difficult to reach a consensus on the vanguard of the "pioneer spirit" and creative transformation.Third,in his novels' performance world,the critics have discovered several key words: violence,death,misery,desire.Fourth,in the research of the text form,the researchers constantly describe the works by narration language,the genre subversion,the repetition narrates,and such studies show "thinning" tendency.Fifth,in the impact of local and foreign levels,Lu Xun,Kawabata and Kafka are undoubtedly the objects which researchers are ready to compare with Yu Hua.

Abstract:―Seeking Identity between Worlds: A Study of Selected Chinese American Fiction” The literature of the Chinese diaspora in America is marked by a tension between ancestral Chinese traditional culture and the modernity of Western culture. This thesis explores diaspora theory, as elaborated by Stuart Hall, Homi Bhabha, Gabriel Sheffer and others to establish a framework for the analysis of key Chinese American literary works. Maxine Hong Kingston‘s seminal novel, The Woman Warrior (1975), will be analyses as an exemplary instance of diasporic identity, where the Chinese cultural heritage is reinterpreted and re-imagined from the point of view of an emancipated woman living in the West. A comparative analysis will be undertaken of Jade Snow Wong‘s The Fifth Chinese Daughter (1950) and Amy Tan‘s The Joy Luck Club (1989) to identify links between the writers who have grappled with various forms of diasporic identity in their works. An important part of this analysis is the representation and adaptation of Chinese folklore and traditional tales in Chinese American literary works.

Abstract:Su Tungpo (Su Shi) is an encyclopedic literary figure in the Song Dynasty in ancient China. He has open-minded attitude towards life and influences several generations. The Gay Genius: the life and time of Su Tungpo tells the story of Su. By introducing this Chinese literary genius to American readers, Lin Yutang, a famous Chinese writer and translator with four nominations of Nobel Prize, depicts the biography of Su with humor and skillful languages. His translation of the book made Su’s works including his poetry, articles and philosophy of life spread overseas and gave a multidimensional portrayal of Su’s life story. Evidently, culture-loaded words abound in the book. The translation of such words frequently makes translators exhausted and stranded. Focusing on the study of the translation of the culture-loaded words, this thesis intends to take Lin’s The Gay Genius as an example to analyze the choices and the effects of different translation techniques due to different purposes under the guidance of domestication and foreignization.

Abstract:This thesis analyses comprehensively and systematically on transition of Chinese rustic novel at the turn of the century.In the background that the pre-modern culture,modern culture and postmodern culture conflicted but also blended mutually,Chinese rustic novel faced various challenges of choices on concepts and aesthetics.It reformed the foreign native experience caused by the modern transition of Chinese rural society,and also enlarged the topic area from traditional rural daily life to areas such as farmers going to the city,local ecology,local history,thus has formed the important narrative phenomenon which is a revival of rustic realism,romanticism,modernism,ecologism and religious culture.It described various contradictions of history and reality during the period of revolution of Chinese society,revealed and criticized the disorganization of social values.Besides,changes on art form of rustic novel are also very remarkable.All these changes indicate the new trend to future of Chinese rustic novel at the new century.

Abstract:cosmopolitanism; Bradford Vivian brings in Hannah Arendt and Thomas Paine as major influences on his research into public forgetting; Eva-Clarita Pettai discusses historical truth commissions and reconciliation; and Alexander Elkind reflects on the differences between memories of Nazi Germany and Communist Russia, with Derrida being a formative companion for him. This book concludes with an afterword by the always thoughtful Jeffrey Olick where he talks of his intellectual and personal companions. Siobhan Kattago, who teaches political philosophy at Tallin University, has put together an excellent set of essays, all of which are full of interest. This book itself is highly companionable and a pleasure to read.

Abstract:This vignette presents Yu Hua ́s novel from 1991 and analyses two different interpretations of the novel with fifteen years between them written by the same prominent critic, Chen Xiaoming. The first interpretation was written in 1992 when China was in the early stages of economic reform. The second was written in 2007 when deep-going social changes had affected the life of the individual. By comparing these two essays, I aim to show how a literary text may act as a catalyst for bringing out existential issues at stake at a particular point in time.

Abstract:The short stories written by Ge Liang are simple yet sophisticated, always revealing a slice of life through plain narration. His short stories not only allow one to trace the "pioneering" influence of Su Tong but also carry Su Tong's unique writing style and characteristics. It seems that Ge Liang is able to offer insight into the softest part of humanity, narrating fatalistic yet hardworking characters. His stories are written in a detailed and authentic style, exhibiting the literary memory of a young southern writer in a "more southern" region with a "southern imaginary" form linked to writers of Su Tong's generation. This form includes cultural, geographical, and daily life features. Every life detail and the aesthetic style contained has become the basic tone and color of Ge Liang's writing, forming a literary narrative with a distinct style.

Abstract:Through a comprehensive discussion of the historical evolution, themes and imagery, characterisation, language and style, and contemporary values and influences of vernacular narratives in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, this paper reveals the unique manifestations of vernacular narratives and their profound connotations at different historical stages. With their unique perspectives and profound social insights, vernacular narratives depict the life of rural China, reflecting the realities of social change and cultural inheritance. Writers such as Lu Xun, Shen Congwen, and Mo Yan, through their respective classic works, not only enriched the themes and techniques of literary creation, but also provided readers with an important window to understand rural life and social reality. In contemporary times, vernacular narratives continue to play an important role by focusing on rural issues and preserving cultural memories, arousing people's identification with and concern for rural culture. The purpose of this paper is to reveal the unique position and significance of vernacular narratives in contemporary Chinese literature and to explore their inspiration and contribution to contemporary literary creation through a multi-angle analysis of vernacular narratives.

Abstract:This paper studies the origin and development of Chinese modern criticism and its gradual superceding of the traditional form of shi hua (comments on poetry).The author calls attention to the embrace of modernity and its value by Chinese intellectuals in the 20th century - a fact which has been neglected in the discussion over "reconstructing Chinese literary criticism" in 1980s. The opposition of the modern against the traditional, and the wandering between the two, marks the duality of modern Chinese literary criticism.

Abstract:This work offers the first systematic analysis of writings on modern Chinese history by historians in China from the early twentieth century to the present. It traces the construction of major interpretive schemes, the evolution of dominant historical narratives, and the unfolding of debates on the most controversial issues in different periods. Placing history-writing in the context of political rivalry and ideological contestation, Huaiyin Li explicates how the historians' dedication to faithfully reconstructing the past was compromised by their commitment to an imagined trajectory of history that fit their present-day agenda and served their needs of political legitimation. Beginning with an examination of the contrasting narratives of revolution and modernisation in the Republican period, the book scrutinises changes in the revolutionary historiography after 1949, including its disciplinisation in the 1950s and early 1960s and radicalisation in the rest of the Mao era. It further investigates the rise of the modernisation paradigm in the reform era, the crises of master narratives since the late 1990s, and the latest development of the field. Central to the author's analysis is the issue of truth and falsehood in historical representation. Li contends that both the revolutionary and modernisation historiographies before 1949 reflected historians' lived experiences and contained a degree of authenticity in mirroring the historical processes of their own times. In sharp contrast, both the revolutionary historiography of the Maoist era and the modernisation historiography of the reform era were primarily products of historians' ideological commitment, which distorted and concealed the past no less than revealed it. In search of a more effective approach to rewriting modern Chinese history, Reinventing Modern China proposes a within-time, open-ended perspective, which allows for different directions in interpreting the events in modern China and views modern Chinese history as an unfinished process remaining to be defined as the country entered the twenty-first century.

Abstract:China's social transformation brings out the transformation of contemporary Chinese literary comments. The study of the transformation is the study of being-on-one's own. Being at the predicament, the opened character of writing gives new significance to the transformational literary comments. The construction of new subject, the ideologies position and the main object have changed a lot. One of the developmental possibilities is giving the duty of constructing the national spirit to the transformational literary comments again. It will be the new shelter of belief, which can't be assimilated in the cultural globalization.

Abstract:Yu Hua is an outstanding novelist. His early novels, with a grim style and a tone of extremity, focus on conspiracy, death, violence, and the chaos and irrationalities of the world to express a skeptical and subversive attitude to life conventions and social norms. They reflect the hostility and tension between the novelist and the reality and represent the achievements of the exploration into human existence by the 1980s' pioneering novels. The hardships of life was the major theme of Yu Hua's novels since the 1990s, which also indicates the transformation of attitude from enlightening intellectuals to emphasizing the civic value. The joy, kindness, tenderness and generosity of human life appease the ruthless emotions in his earlier works. Yu Hua's stern narrative style, influenced by France's Nouveau Roman, and such writers as Lu Xun, Franz Kafka and Hemingway. His description of the details is vivid, rich, accurate and imaginative, and his language is simple, fine and fluent. This composes the most important part of Yu Hua's artistic talent. His attention to the details, though is a reflection of his ability, at the same time is a limitation to his creation.
