Abstract:The Quantum Cheshire Cat experiment showed that when weak measurements are performed on pre- and post-selected system, the counterintuitive result has been obtained that a neutron is measured to be in one place without its spin, and its spin is measured to be in another place without the neutron. A generalization of this effect is presented with a massive particle whose mass is measured to be in one place with no momentum, while the momentum is measured to be in another place without the mass. The new result applies to any massive particle, independent of its spin or charge. A gedanken experiment which illustrates this effect is presented using a nested pair of Mach-Zehnder interferometers, but with some of the mirrors and beam splitters moving relative to the laboratory frame. The analysis of this experiment using the counterparticle ontology of Aharonov et al. is also given.

Abstract:From its very beginning, quantum theory has been revealing extraordinary and counter-intuitive phenomena, such as wave-particle duality, Schrödinger cats and quantum non-locality. Another paradoxical phenomenon found within the framework of quantum mechanics is the ‘quantum Cheshire Cat’: if a quantum system is subject to a certain pre- and postselection, it can behave as if a particle and its property are spatially separated. It has been suggested to employ weak measurements in order to explore the Cheshire Cat’s nature. Here we report an experiment in which we send neutrons through a perfect silicon crystal interferometer and perform weak measurements to probe the location of the particle and its magnetic moment. The experimental results suggest that the system behaves as if the neutrons go through one beam path, while their magnetic moment travels along the other.

Abstract:Intuition suggests that an object should carry all of its physical properties. However, a quantum object may not act in such a manner-it can temporarily leave some of its physical properties where it never appears. This phenomenon is known as the quantum Cheshire cat effect. It has been proposed that a quantum object can even permanently discard a physical property and obtain a new one it did not initially have. Here, we observe this effect experimentally by casting non-unitary imaginary-time evolution on a photonic cluster state to extract weak values, which reveals the counterintuitive phenomenon that two photons exchange their spins without classically meeting each other. A phenomenon presenting only in the quantum realm, our results are in stark contrast with the perception of inseparability between objects and properties, and shed new light on comprehension of the ontology of observables.

This assumption is premised on the notion that physical properties are inseparable from the objective carrier. However, after the concept of the quantum Cheshire cats was proposed, which makes the separation of physical attributes from the entity possible, the premise no longer holds. Furthermore, an experimental demonstration of the separation of the wave and particle attributes inspired by this scenario remains scarce. In this work, we experimentally separated the wave and particle attributes of a single photon by exploiting the quantum Cheshire cat concept for the first time. By applying a weak disturbance to the evolution of the system, we achieve an effect similar to the quantum Cheshire cat and demonstrated the separation of the wave and particle attributes via the extraction of weak values. Our work provides a new perspective for the in-depth understanding of wave‒particle duality and promotes the application of weak measurements in fundamentals of quantum mechanics.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement serves as an important resource for quantum processing. In the original thought experiment of the Quantum Cheshire Cat, the physical properties of the cat (state) can be decoupled from its quantum entities. How do quantum entanglement and weak values affect such thought experiment? Here, we conceive a new thought experiment that exploits quantum entanglement with weak (value) measurement. Specifically, we ask: can two entangled particles exchange physical and quantum properties? We answer the question in the affirmative.

Abstract:We analyse the quantum Cheshire cat using contextuality theory, to see if this can tell us anything about how best to interpret this paradox. We show that this scenario can be analysed using the relation between three different measurements, which seem to result in a logical contradiction. We discuss how this contextual behaviour links to weak values, and coherences between prohibited states. Rather than showing a property of the particle is disembodied, the quantum Cheshire cat instead demonstrates the effects of these coherences, which are typically found in pre- and postselected systems.

Abstract:Although our every-day experience rejects it, the quantum Cheshire Cat suggests a potential spatial separation between different properties of a single particle in an interferometer. The first experiment with neutrons confirmed the quantum Cheshire Cat effect by using the path and spin degrees of freedom. The locations of each property are determined qualitatively through reactions to locally applied perturbations. Yet, no consensus on the interpretation has been reached. To clarify the origin of the effect, in the present experiment the energy degree of freedom is used as the third property; the three properties of neutrons appear to be separated in different paths in the interferometer. The analysis of the experiment suggests the strong involvement of the inner product between the state vectors, one evolved from the initial state through the perturbation and the other being the final state. The inner product results in amplitudes from two sub-beams which contribute to the intensity. The cross-term between amplitudes gives rise to the quantum Cheshire Cat.

Abstract:Wave-particle duality is one of the most intriguing counterfactual concepts in quantum theory. In our common sense, the wave and particle properties of a quantum object are inseparable. However, the recent studies based on Quantum Cheshire Cat phenomena showed that separating the physical properties of a quantum object including wave and particle attributes from itself are possible in microscopic system described by two-state vector formalism. In this study, we put forward a feasible scheme to spatially separate the wave and particle attributes of two entangled photons by properly choosing the pre- and post-selection of path states. Our scheme also guarantees that the observation of wave and particle properties of the two entangled photons always obey the Bohr's complementarity principle.

Abstract:Schr\"{o}dinger's Cat was proposed by Erwin Schr\"{o}dinger, the infamous thought experiment in which a cat in a box was both alive and dead simultaneously illustrating a quantum phenomenon known as superposition. In 2013, Yakir Aharonov and his co-authors conceived of an experiment suggesting that a particle can be separated from its property. They called the effect a "Quantum Cheshire Cat" that has been experimentally verified in the succeeding year. The name Quantum Cheshire Cat is inspired from a fanciful character of the Cheshire Cat in "\textit{Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"} a novel written by Lewis Carroll where the grin of cat is found without a cat. An important question arises here. Once the grin of the Cheshire Cat is separated, is there any correlation still left between the grin and the cat? To answer the question we propose a thought experiment in which Quantum Cheshire Cat is also a Schr\"{o}dinger's Cat existing in superposition of happy(smiling) and sad(frowning) states. We name this cat as a "Quantum Mona Lisa Cat" for the reason that historically it is presumed that Mona Lisa's portrait contains both characteristics of happy(smiling) and sad(frowning) and either is observed depending upon the mood of the observer. We show that property separated from particle behave as "Quantum Mona Lisa Cat".
A dynamical quantum Cheshire Cat effect and implications for counterfactual communication

Abstract:Here we report a type of dynamic effect that is at the core of the so called "counterfactual computation" and especially "counterfactual communication" quantum effects that have generated a lot of interest recently. The basic feature of these counterfactual setups is the fact that particles seem to be affected by actions that take place in locations where they never (more precisely, only with infinitesimally small probability) enter. Specifically, the communication/computation takes place without the quantum particles that are supposed to be the information carriers travelling through the communication channel or entering the logic gates of the computer. Here we show that something far more subtle is taking place: It is not necessary for the particle to enter the region where the controlling action takes place; it is enough for the controlled property of the particle, (i.e., the property that is being controlled by actions in the control region), to enter that region. The presence of the controlled property, without the particle itself, is possible via a quantum Cheshire Cat type effect in which a property can be disembodied from the particle that possesses it. At the same time, we generalize the quantum Cheshire Cat effect to dynamical settings, in which the property that is "disembodied" from the particle possessing it propagates in space, and leads to a flux of "disembodied" conserved quantities.

Abstract:Quantum Chesire Cat is a counterintuitive phenomenon that provides a new window into the nature of the quantum systems in relation to multiple degrees of freedom associated with a single physical entity. Under suitable pre and postselections, a photon (the cat) can be decoupled from its circular polarization (its grin). In this paper, we explore whether the grin without the cat can be teleported to a distant location. This will be a totally disembodied teleportation protocol. Based on the original Quantum Chesire Cat setup, we design a protocol where the circular polarization is successfully teleported between two spatially separated parties even when the photon is not physically present with them. The process raises questions in our understanding about properties of quantum system. In particular it shows that question like ``whose polarization is it'' can prove to be vacuous in such scenario.

Abstract:Quantum cats here and there The story of Schrödinger's cat being hidden away in a box and being both dead and alive is often invoked to illustrate the how peculiar the quantum world can be. On a twist of the dead/alive behavior, Wang et al. now show that the cat can be in two separate locations at the same time. Constructing their cat from coherent microwave photons, they show that the state of the “electromagnetic cat” can be shared by two separated cavities. Going beyond common-sense absurdities of the classical world, the ability to share quantum states in different locations could be a powerful resource for quantum information processing. Abstract:We explore how one might detect the dynamical quantum Cheshire cat proposed by Aharonov et al. We show that, in practice, we need to bias the initial state by adding/subtracting a small probability amplitude ('field') of the orthogonal state, which travels with the disembodied property, to make the effect detectable (i.e. if our initial state is |↑z〉, we need to bias this with some small amount δ of state |↓z〉). This biasing, which can be done either directly or via weakly entangling the state with a pointer, effectively provides a phase reference with which we can measure the evolution of the state. The outcome can then be measured as a small probability difference in detections in a mutually unbiased basis, proportional to this biasing δ. We show this is different from counterfactual communication, which provably does not require any probe field to travel between sender Bob and receiver Alice for communication. We further suggest an optical polarisation experiment where these phenomena might be demonstrated in a laboratory.

Abstract:Quantum superpositions of distinct coherent states in a single-mode harmonic oscillator, known as "cat states", have been an elegant demonstration of Schrodinger's famous cat paradox. Here, we realize a two-mode cat state of electromagnetic fields in two microwave cavities bridged by a superconducting artificial atom, which can also be viewed as an entangled pair of single-cavity cat states. We present full quantum state tomography of this complex cat state over a Hilbert space exceeding 100 dimensions via quantum non-demolition measurements of the joint photon number parity. The ability to manipulate such multi-cavity quantum states paves the way for logical operations between redundantly encoded qubits for fault-tolerant quantum computation and communication.

Abstract:This article aims to reconsider E. Schrödinger's famous thought experiment, the cat paradox experiment, and its place in quantum foundations from a new perspective, grounded in the type of interpretation of quantum phenomena and quantum mechanics, which belongs to the class of interpretations designated here as "reality without realism" (RWR) interpretations. Such interpretations have not been previously brought to bear on the cat experiment, including by N. Bohr, whose interpretation in its ultimate forms (as he changes his interpretation a few times) is an RWR interpretation, but who does not appear to have commented on the cat experiment. The interpretation adopted in this articles follows Bohr's interpretation, as based on two assumptions or postulates, the Heisenberg and Bohr postulates, but it adds a third postulate, the Dirac postulate. The article also introduces, in conjunction with the concept of reality without realism, the concepts of visible and invisible to thought and considers their role in the cat-paradox experiment.

Schrödinger's Cheshire Cat: A tabletop experiment to measure the Diósi-Penrose collapse time and demonstrate Objective Reduction (OR)

Abstract:For nearly 100 years, the paradox of Schrödinger's Cat has remained unresolved. Why does the world we live in appear classical despite being composed of quantum particles governed by the Schrödinger wave equation? Lajos Diósi and Roger Penrose propose the wavefunction collapses because it describes two incompatible space-times, demonstrating an inconsistency between quantum mechanics and general relativity. To avoid this paradox, collapse must occur within Heisenberg's time-energy uncertainty limit. Subatomic particles with low mass, and correspondingly low energy, collapse in years, while superposed cats would collapse almost instantaneously. We propose a table-top experiment to put two small mirrors into superposition and observe them collapse in a time consistent with the Diósi-Penrose model. We employ two techniques to perform this experiment in ambient laboratory conditions. Most experiments separate a small mass by a large distance. In contrast, we displace a large mass by a small distance where the self-energy follows an inverse square law with correspondingly high collapse times. We further use a symmetrical apparatus, where a break in symmetry indicates collapse independent of decoherence.
