Abstract:In China, the rapid development greatly greatly promotes the national economic power and living standard but also inevitably brings a series of environmental problems. In order to resolve these problems fundamentally, Chinese scientists have been undertaking research in the area of green chemical engineering (GCE) for many years and achieved great progresses. In this paper, we reviewed the research progresses related to GCE in China and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese resources characteristics and environmental requirements, i.e. ionic liquids and their applications, biomass utilization and bio-based materials/products, green solvent-mediated extraction technologies, and cold plas-mas for coal conversion. Afterwards, the perspectives and development tendencies of GCE were proposed, and the challenges which will be faced while developing available industrial technologies in China were mentioned.

Abstract:With the development of manufacturing technology and strict international environmental regulations, green production has become an imperative research topic in the manufacturing industry. Because cutting is affected by several factors, the development of green processes is vital for automated cutting using machines. These factors are often subjective and are set up merely based on the manual and experience of engineers, reducing tool life and deteriorating tool precision; ultimately, this approach increases production costs and reduces production efficiency. Moreover, the ecological environment can be seriously affected. Furthermore, the parameters must be adjusted according to variations in the processing state, which is a considerable drawback for the automated cutting industry. In this study, we investigated the precision computerized numerical-controlled cutting process as an example. We first assessed the literature and investigated tool wear and cutting noise as quality standards for green computerized numerical-controlled cutting. The cutting depth, cutting speed, feed rate, and the tip of the center were selected as control parameters. The consistency of the results was verified through an expert questionnaire conducted using analytic hierarchy process, and the weighted values of the control parameters were obtained. Simultaneously, seven environmental efficiency elements of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and TRIZ 39 engineering parameters of the CSI project were used to establish the engineering parameters for the green production design. Furthermore, 40 inventive principles from a contradiction matrix were used to design an optimization strategy to develop and verify an innovation strategy of singular quality. Finally, the experimental results revealed that implementing the analytic hierarchy process coupled with the TRIZ innovative thinking mode and green production concept enables enterprises to reduce their consumption of raw materials and waste production during the design process. This approach effectively reduces the burden on the environment and thus facilitates industry competitiveness and sustainability.

Abstract:Machining processes are responsible for substantial environmental impacts due to their great energy consumption. Accurately characterizing the energy consumption of machining processes is a starting point to increase manufacturing energy efficiency and reduce their associated environmental impacts. The energy calculation of machining processes depends on the availability of energy supply data of machine tools. However, the energy supply can vary greatly among different types of machine tools so that it is difficult to obtain the energy data theoretically. The aim of this research was to investigate the energy characteristics and obtain the power models of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools through an experimental study. Four CNC lathes, two CNC milling machines and one machining center were selected for experiments. Power consumption of non-cutting motions and material removal was measured and compared for the selected machine tools. Here, non-cutting motions include standby, cutting fluid spraying, spindle rotation and feeding operations of machine tools. Material removal includes turning and milling. Results show that the power consumption of non-cutting motions and milling is dependent on machine tools while the power consumption of turning is almost independent from the machine tools. The results imply that the energy saving potential of machining processes is tremendous.

Abstract:The machinability of Nickel-based superalloy GH4169 is poor, the traditional methods to machining is application of cutting fluids with the active additives which will cause environmental and health problems. In recent years, environmental concerns call for the reduced of cutting fluids in metal machining. The green manufacturing techniques are to be investigated to achieve this objective. In this paper, the ionized air was applied instead of cutting fluids for the aim of green cutting. The effects of ionized air on cutting force, cutting temperature and chip formation have been examined in turning of GH4169 with carbide tools K20. The results of experiments indicated that application of ionized air produced lower cutting force and cutting temperature, the values were reduced about 7 percent and 9 percent compared to dry cutting respectively, and it is advantage in forming acceptable chips. The research results show that clean production was achieved in metal cutting associated with ionized air cooling and lubricating.

Abstract:Green Manufacturing (GM in short) provides a systems view of the manufacturing process that aims to efficiently use energy, water and raw materials in order to minimize air and water pollution and generation of waste. Green manufacturing is beneficial to the alleviation of environment burdens. To reap more profits, GM has been introduced to many fields to improve the performance. The optimization selection methods of technical factors which include mainly the selection of cutters and cutting fluid, optimization of cutting fluid system, is an important approach to improving environmental performance of cutting machining. The objective factors of decision-making problems for traditional technical factors' selection are time, quality and cost. Based on the main idea of environmental consciousness, a decision-making framework model of GM is proposed; a multi-objective decisionmaking model for technical factors selection is put forward. The objectives include Time (T), Quality (Q), Cost(C), Resources(R) and Environment impact (E), where T aims to minimize the produce time, Q means to maximize the quality, C means to minimize the cost, R means to minimize the resource consumption and E means to minimize the environment impact respectively. Each objective is analyzed in detail and application of the Fuzzy Analysis Algorithm in the decision-making is discussed. A case study in which a practical decision-making problem of technical factors selection for GM is analyzed and successful application of above model shows that the model is practical.

Abstract:Cutting fluid has cooling and lubricating properties and is an important part of the field of metal machining. Owing to harmful additives, base oils with poor biodegradability, defects in processing methods, and unreasonable emissions of waste cutting fluids, cutting fluids have serious pollution problems, which pose challenges to global carbon emissions laws and regulations. However, the current research on cutting fluid and its circulating purification technique lacks systematic review papers to provide scientific technical guidance for actual production. In this study, the key scientific issues in the research achievements of eco-friendly cutting fluid and waste fluid treatment are clarified. First, the preparation and mechanism of organic additives are summarized, and the influence of the physical and chemical properties of vegetable base oils on lubricating properties is analyzed. Then, the process characteristics of cutting fluid reduction supply methods are systematically evaluated. Second, the treatment of oil mist and miscellaneous oil, the removal mechanism and approach of microorganisms, and the design principles of integrated recycling equipment are outlined. The conclusion is concluded that the synergistic effect of organic additives, biodegradable vegetable base oils and recycling purification effectively reduces the environmental pollution of cutting fluids. Finally, in view of the limitations of the cutting fluid and its circulating purification technique, the prospects of amino acid additive development, self-adapting jet parameter supply system, matching mechanism between processing conditions and cutting fluid are put forward, which provides the basis and support for the engineering application and development of cutting fluid and its circulating purification.

Abstract:Paper-based electronics have been considered as one of the most exciting technologies in the near future due to sustainability, low cost, mechanical flexibility, etc. Even though there have been numerous studies regarding this technology, there is not any available quantitative study on how paper electronics would minimize the impact on the environment. This work aims to give the first detailed analysis regarding this important question. To this end, we for the first time designed and prototyped paper-based multilayer printed circuit boards (P-PCBs), which show comparable functions to the currently available organic printed circuit boards (O-PCBs); yet the P-PCBs adopt a "green" preparation process. A life cycle assessment study was performed to quantify the P-PCBs' environmental impacts, e.g. acidification potential, global warming potential, human toxic potential, ozone layer depletion potential, etc. Our current research reveals that the P-PCBs have about two magnitude lower impact on the environment than O-PCBs based on the results of the life cycle assessment, which suggests that the P-PCB technique is beneficial for the environment at the regional or global production level. The current study gives useful information and sheds light on the future technological directions for various paper based electronics studies.

Abstract:Ultra-high strength steel is the major material for manufacturing the aviation gears due to its superior strength and high hardness. However, the generous usage of cutting fluid in flood cooling resulted in the increase of machining costs and environmental pollution problems during the milling process of ultra-high strength steel. The green cutting technology was widely utilized to improve the machining performance of difficult-to-cut materials and reduce the harm to the environment, thus achieving the goal of clean production. In this study, the effect of three green cooling and lubrication conditions (i.e., dry cutting, high-pressure air cooling (HPAC) and ultrasonic atomized-based cutting fluid (UACF)) on the milling performance of ultra-high strength steel was evaluated in terms of milling force, surface quality, and tool wear. Further, the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm was also applied to quantitatively analyze the milling chatter and profile features of machined surface. The obtained results show that the UACF process obtains a lower cutting force, coefficient of friction, and surface roughness R a in comparison with the dry and HPAC environments. In addition, UACF can suppress the machining chatter and reduce surface defects due to effective cooling and lubrication. Moreover, the improvement of cooling and lubrication resulting from the effective penetration of droplets in the UACF process contributed to the reduction of the tool wear concerning the formation of built-up edge and coating detachment. The UACF has shown the significant advantage in the green manufacturing of ultra-high strength steel.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">With the exacerbation of global environmental concerns, manufacturing industries need to consider the impact of carbon emissions from manufacturing processes. The selection of the parameters in the machining process greatly influences on carbon emissions and machining efficiency. Hence dynamically optimizing the machining process parameters is a significant means to reduce carbon emissions according to the real-time perception of the machining conditions. In the paper, a method of cutting parameter optimization is presented on basis of the construction the digital twin of a CNC machine tool. In this method, an ontology on CNC machining process is established to be used as a communication bridge for understanding the semantic of the real-time interaction between the physical machine and the virtual twin. And a dynamic optimization method on cutting parameters is presented according to the simulation and optimization of the virtual twin with the dynamic perception of the machining conditions of the physical machine. At last, a case study is presented to validate this method for effectively optimizing the cutting parameters and decreasing carbon emissions.</p>

Abstract:Due to the development of new engineering materials and high-speed cutting, cutting fluid plays an important role in machining. Commonly, the use of cutting fluid can decrease cutting temperature, reduce the friction between tool and workpiece, extend tool life, and improve machining efficiency and surface quality. These effects of cutting fluid were mainly obtained from its basic functions including cooling, lubrication, corrosion protection, and cleaning. According to the review of the researches in cutting fluids applied in metal cutting process, the available researches mainly focused on the application strategies and penetration capability, processing performance, new types of environmentally friendly cutting fluids, and preliminary machined surface quality. This article also suggests that the effect of cutting fluid on machined surface quality and performance will become an important research direction. There is a matching problem between the cutting fluids and the workpiece materials. Further research on effect of cutting fluids on machined surface should include physical and chemical mechanism of the cutting fluid, action mechanism on fresh machined surface during machining process, action mechanism in the period of long-term service, stability of the composition and physical and chemical properties, and evaluation method of the effective use of cutting fluid.

Abstract:Conventional cutting fluids have negative impacts on the environment, worker health and production costs. Thus, both researchers and manufacturers are doing many studies to obtain alternative methods. The main purpose of these studies is to obtain alternative cooling conditions that are both sustainable and efficient. For this purpose, the current study investigates the effects of different cooling and lubrication techniques on machining performance during hard turning of AISI D3 cold work tool steel. Thus, 10 different conditions such as MQL, vortex tube, graphene-doped nanofluid (GPN), graphene quantum dots doped nanofluid (GQDs) and hybrid cooling conditions including their interaction were applied. The effects of these methods on machining outputs such as surface roughness, cutting temperature, power consumption, flank wear and tool wear characterization were analyzed. Thermal conductivity and pH values were measured to see the relationship between the effect of cutting fluids on machining efficiency and homogeneity/thermal conductivity. The results showed that the vortex + GPN/GQDs hybrid cooling technique gave the best results at all outputs. Compared to dry machining, vortex + GPN/GQDs provided decreases of 53.63%, 49.01%, 56.52% and 46.47% in average surface roughness, cutting temperature, energy consumption and flank wear, respectively.

Abstract:As an important technology to improve the quality and yield of farmland crops, mulching film has been used in batches of the cultivation of many field crops. However, with people's attention to environmental problems gradually in recent years, the environmental pollution of traditional plastic mulch makes it unable to be the first choice of field crop cultivation. In response to this problem, the application and research of degradable mulch represented by paper mulch have begun to receive widespread attention. In this paper, combined with the development process of mulch, the current development status of paper mulch in the field was introduced, and the preparation method of paper mulch and the field cultivation effect of paper as mulch in different areas were discussed. The advantages and problems of paper mulch compared with plastic mulch were pointed out according to the corresponding results of literature, and the application of paper mulch in field coverage in the future was prospected.

Abstract:The "greenization" of papermaking enterprise behavior is an important approach to transition towards to environmental protection and green development mode. Aiming at the problem that it is difficult to quantitatively evaluate the green behavior performance of papermaking enterprises, a new model of green behavior performance evaluation of papermaking enterprises is proposed based on rough set and cloud model theory. Firstly, the factors influencing the green behavior performance of papermaking enterprises are identified, and an evaluation index system for the green behavior of papermaking enterprises is established. Secondly, using rough set theory, the weight of each layer in the index system is determined. Subsequently, considering the fuzziness and uncertainty of index evaluation, the cloud model is employed to construct the performance evaluation model of green behavior of papermaking enterprises. The weights are combined with the evaluation model to finally calculate the performance level of green behavior of papermaking enterprises. Finally, a comprehensive evaluation is conducted, taking the green behavior performance of a papermaking enterprise as the research object. The results show that: (1) The green behavior performance level of the papermaking enterprise is in a good level, but there are pollution penalties caused by inadequate management in pollutant discharge management. In terms of energy structure, coal is the main source of energy, and a large amount of oxides are emitted. (2) The calculation results of the evaluation method are basically consistent with the actual situation. It can reflect the actual effect of the green behavior of the enterprise, and verify the reliability, rationality and effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:While the metal cutting industrial sector is essential for global economic growth, it also has a major impact, such as cutting tools, cooling and lubrication environments, improved cutting parameters, etc., on the world's natural resources and ecosystems. The increasing demand for goods and services has resulted in a paradigm of linear production and consumption that cannot be maintained over the long term. The need to transition towards green or sustainable manufacturing is necessary for a variety of reasons, including issues relating to occupational health, legislation governing the environment, and hazardous or dirty working conditions for employees. However, the most important reason is the waste cost associated with utilising an excessive amount of cutting fluid in metal cutting sectors. As a result, this article examines a sustainable manufacturing system built in the metal cutting sector and offers a comprehensive guide for the industrial sector. Organisational tactics, indications, and potential roadblocks to execution are all given special attention in this review article. Further, the review article investigates the obstacles that stand in the way of environmentally friendly production. In addition to this, it investigates the criteria that are used to quantify development towards more sustainable production techniques and provides a new strategy for evaluating initiatives of this nature. It has been concluded that this in-depth analysis helps academics and researchers by detailing the green machining techniques that have been put into practise in many machining domains to ensure a clean and secure working environment.
