Abstract:Diamond-like carbon (DLC) film has gained widespread popularity as a versatile and important solid lubricant material in the field of tribology. Among various types of DLC films, hydrogen-rich DLC (a-C:H) film as a high-performance material has greatly enhanced anti-friction and anti-wear. However, despite its remarkable capabilities, the surface chemical properties and tribological performance of a-C:H film are significantly influenced by the surrounding environment, in special atmospheric conditions. Its super-slip mechanism involves the participation of hydrogen atoms, which can weaken the normal electron number of the outermost layer of a-C:H film. What is more, it is essential to investigate tribofilms in a vacuum or inert gas environment to ascertain the appropriate tribological properties of a-C:H film, which helps in mitigating oxidation effects. When non-doped DLC films are subjected to friction in a dry nitrogen or argon environment, they create sp3-C-rich transfer films on the contact surface, resulting in macroscopic super-slip effects. This paper aims to introduce and discuss the diverse nanostructures of in situ tribofilms in a-C:H film, focusing on the working environment, and explore the prospective application directions of a-C:H film.
Tribochemical mechanism of superlubricity in graphene quantum dots modified DLC films under high contact pressure

Abstract:In this work, we designed three series of tribo-couples based on amorphous carbon films including GLC, DLC and PLC that were modified by graphene quantum dots (GQDs). The tribo-testing environment was controlled at harsh conditions (like heavy load and high speed) in dry nitrogen atmosphere using bare and film-coated bearing steel balls as counterbodies, respectively. Through the tribochemical interactions, the self-mated DLC system obtained a surperlubricity state (μ=0.01). During the whole sliding, the contact surface of the upper counterfacing ball was covered by 2D-layered carbon and graphitic lubricants induced via structural transformation of GQDs. Meanwhile, the tribofilm of the disc wear track was composed of a silica-like SiOx boundary layer and a multicomponent mixed-layer induced by tribochemistry. Compared to the self-mated DLC system, the structural boundary enriched with SiOx compounds was not formed at the bottom region of the tribofilm for the bare steel system; meanwhile, the disc wear track was covered by a thicker tribofilm containing plenty of degraded GQDs. This inferred the fact that the formation of a nanostructured sliding interface was the key to realize superlubricity. These discoveries successfully afforded a lubrication mechanism of GQDs for solid lubricant in applications of engineering and industry.

Abstract:As a kind of self-lubricating material, diamond-like carbon (DLC) film is famous for its excellent tribological properties. Superlubricity state with nearly-vanishing friction achieved with DLC film has enormous potential applications in future mechanical systems. It is pointed out that its superlubricity state is highly related to both the inherent properties of the DLC film and external sliding conditions. Moreover, the underlying mechanisms of the superlubricity are complicated, posing uncertainties on their engineering application. This review provides an overview of the influence factors, including film composition, ambient, temperature, normal load, and sliding velocity and their correlations with the anti-friction behaviors of DLC films. These understandings will enable a more effective engineering application of self-lubricating carbon films with excellent tribological properties.
Shear-induced interfacial reconfiguration governing superlubricity of MoS2-Ag film enabled by diamond-like carbon

Abstract:Robust superlubricity of the disulphide-based film or diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating has been systematically investigated in relation to interfacial nanostructures and environmental atmospheres. Nevertheless, the frictional performances of the tribo-couple between them, especially the underlying mechanisms governing superlubricity are scarcely touched. In this study, we designed the periodically multilayered MoS2-Ag film based on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) and found a superior lubricating durability of the film with a superlow friction coefficient of 0.0065 triggered by DLC film under a load of 10 N in N2. The in-depth structural analysis on the contact areas of tribopairs were performed through Raman and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The results demonstrate that sliding-affected regions of the film generally undergo a deep amorphization transformation and the materials are transferred to counterfacing ball to form a multiphase tribofilm. The prevailing mechanisms emphasize that the superlubricious status highly depends on the synergistic effect from both the physicochemical properties of shear-induced tribofilm and the structural transformation of the MoS2-Ag surface by different contact mechanics and reconfiguration pathways. The findings shed light on the nature of tribochemical mechanisms of MoS2-Ag film and provide a new strategy to achieve macroscale superlubricity of the disulphide-related lubricants.

Influence of Tribofilm on Superlubricity of Highly-Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon Films in Inert Gaseous Environments

Abstract:In this study, we mainly focus on the structural morphology and inter-atomic bonding state of tribofilms resulting from a highly-hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) film in order to ascertain the underlying mechanisms for its superlubric behavior (i.e., less than 0.01 friction coefficient). Specifically, we achieved superlubricity (i.e., friction coefficients of down to 0.003) with this film in dry nitrogen and argon atmospheres especially when the tribo-pair is made of an a-C:H coated Si disk sliding against an a-C:H coated steel ball, while the a-C:H coated disk against uncoated ball does not provide superlubricity. We also found that the state of superlubricity is more stable in argon than in nitrogen and the formation of a smooth and uniformly-thick carbonaceous tribofilm appears to be one of the key factors for the realization of such superlubricity. Besides, the interfacial morphology of sliding test pairs and the atomic-scale bond structure of the carbon-based tribofilms also play an important role in the observed superlubric behavior of a-C:H films. Using Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy, we have compared the structural differences of the tribofilms produced on bare and a-C:H coated steel balls. For the a-C:H coated ball as mating material which provided superlow friction in argon, structural morphology of the tribofilm was similar or comparable to that of the original a-C:H coating; while for the bare steel ball, the sp2-bonded C fraction in the tribofilm increased and a fingerprint-like nanocrystalline structure was detected by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). We also calculated the shear stresses for different tribofilms, and established a relationship between the magnitude of the shear stresses and the extent of sp3-sp2 phase transformation.

Abstract:Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) is capable of providing a near-frictionless lubrication state when rubbed in dry sliding contacts. Nevertheless, the mechanisms governing superlubricity in a-C:H are still not well comprehended, mainly due to the lack of spatially resolved structural information of the buried contact surface. Here, we present structural analysis of the carbonaceous sliding interfaces at the atomic scale in two superlubricious solid lubricants, a-C:H and Si-doped a-C:H (a-C:H:Si), by probing the contact area using state-of-the-art scanning electron transmission microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The results emphasize the diversity of superlubricity mechanisms in a-C:Hs. They suggest that the occurrence of a superlubricious state is generally dependent on the formation of interfacial nanostructures, mainly a tribolayer, by different carbon rehybridization pathways. The evolution of such anti-friction nanostructures highly depends on the contact mechanics and the counterpart material. These findings enable a more effective manipulation of superlubricity and developments of new carbon lubricants with robust lubrication properties.

Abstract:Superlubricity is a revolutionary step for tribology, which will endow mechanical systems with energy-saving and long-life servicing. However, it is challenging to realize structural superlubricity and reveal its mechanism under mm-scale on steel. Here, we proposed a new strategy to realize macroscale superlubricity (friction coefficient low to 0.003) by sliding amorphous MoS2 (WS2) against hydrogenated amorphous carbon films. Due to tribo-chemistry induced by friction heating and shear force, the amorphous MoS2 was transformed into two-dimensional crystal MoS2, where the layers were flat without wrinkles. Thus, macroscale (submillimeter range) crystalline/amorphous heterogeneous were formed where friction occurs. Based on the nanoscale analyses and the density functional theory calculations, the superlubricity be attributed to the formation of incommensurate contact between crystalline and hydrogenated amorphous carbon structures accompanied with extremely weak interfacialinteraction are the immediate root of superlubricity.
Robust Macroscale Superlubricity in Humid Air Via Designing Amorphous DLC/Crystalline TMDs Friction Pair

Abstract:Superlubricity, a cutting-edge concept, has the potential to drive the Fourth Industrial Revolution giving its near-zero energy consumption, but the challenge is how to achieve it in humid air with chemical activity and at macroscale surfaces with unavoidable defects. Here, a novel principle involving the amorphous/crystalline friction pair based on the cognition that tribochemical interaction sites originate from grain boundary defect locations is proposed to achieve macroscale superlubricity in humid air. The absence of grain boundaries in amorphous diamond-like carbon (DLC) significantly reduces chemical interaction during the sliding process. This is supported by experimental observations of priority oxidation at the grain boundaries. Results indicate DLC versus MoS2 friction pair has weakened chemical interaction and less humid insensitivity compared to the MoS2 versus MoS2 pair, even increasing the contact area. Theoretical simulation suggests that DLC versus MoS2 pair eliminates the cross-linking of friction interlayers induced by the enrichment of H2O molecules at MoS2 defects. The robust superlubricity is achieved for the typical friction pair of DLC versus MoS2 in air (RH <= 25%) at macroscopic contact pressure (1.1 GPa) with friction coefficient in 10-3 magnitude and extra-long anti-wear life (more than 2 x 105 cycles), which is of significance for the industrialization of superlubricity. Abstract:<p>Diamond‐like carbon (DLC) films are capable of achieving superlubricity at sliding interfaces by a rapid running‐in process. However, fundamental mechanisms governing the friction evolution during this running‐in processes remain elusive especially at the nanoscale, which hinders strategic tailoring of tribosystems for minimizing friction and wear. Here, it is revealed that the running‐in governing superlubricity of DLC demonstrates two sub‐stages in single‐asperity nanocontacts. The first stage, mechanical removal of a thin oxide layer, is described quantitatively by a stress‐activated Arrhenius model. In the second stage, a large friction decrease occurs due to a structural ordering transformation, with the kinetics well described by the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami–Kolmogorov model with a modified load dependence of the activation energy. The direct observation of a graphitic‐layered transfer film formation together with the measured Avrami exponent reveal the primary mechanism of the ordering transformation. The findings provide fundamental insights into friction evolution mechanisms, and design criteria for superlubricity.</p>

Abstract:The superlubrictiy behavior and mechanism of diamond-like carbon (DLC) film in vacuum were researched under rotating and reciprocating motion. Compared with the reciprocating motion, DLC film can reveal a more stable superlubricity state and lower wear under rotating motion. TEM, AFM, Raman and the first-principles calculation results show that the transfer layer would be quickly removed under reciprocating motion, but could be maintained stably under rotational motion, which may be one of the key factors for the stable superlubricity state of DLC films under rotating motion. The removal of tribofilm under reciprocating motion may be attributed not only to the stronger impact and instability in friction interface, but also to the strong adhesion effect of the friction interface.

Abstract:A variety of sp 2 -bonded structures can be formed in carbon materials, and carbon-based lubricants with low shear strength are widely used for harsh working conditions. In this paper, hydrogenated graphite-like carbon (GLC) films with a high content of sp 2 -bonded structures were prepared by ion beam deposition. Their structures were modified by heat treatment (annealing) and element doping to improve the lubrication performance. The microstructure characterization of tribolayer formed at friction interfaces and the lubricating mechanism were analyzed thoroughly, and an appropriate modification method of sp 2 -bonded structures was then proposed. Controlling the sp 3 cross-linked structures between sp 2 -bonded carbon could improve the lubrication performance precisely. The results regarding GLC films against tribopairs with different hydrogen contents indicate that a stable friction coefficient (0.006) can be obtained in dry N 2 when GLC film and hydrogenated polymer-like carbon (PLC) coated ball were used as tribocouples, and the wear rate is only 6.71 × 10 -10 mm 3 /N·m after 100,000 reciprocating cycles. By utilizing the high sp 2 -bonded carbon films, a theoretical basis for superlubricity can be established through heat treatment and element doping, which provides the sufficient technical support for the development of solid lubricating materials with low friction coefficients and high wear resistance under harsh working conditions.

Abstract:Presently, approaches to achieve superlubricity for diamond-like carbon (DLC) films rely heavily on the film deposition techniques and parameters, such as other nonmetallic element incorporation and structure optimization. In this work, we report a new feasible pathway to achieve superlubricity for DLC films, which is not dependent on the film preparation parameters but rather on the external effects, i.e., sliding interfacial addition of metal nanoparticles (Cu and Ni). The approach controls the structures of wear products by the introduction of metal nanoparticles and the subsequent effect of metal catalysts, to in situ form graphene-coated particles without impacting the overall performances of the films. Through detailed experimental investigations combined with density functional theory (DFT) simulations, graphitic encapsulation and electronic shielding of metal nanoparticles are responsible for the dramatic changes at the frictional interface leading to metal-carbon interfacial superlubricity. We expect that the approach will enrich the understanding of the lubrication mechanism of DLC films and promote the DLC films' superlubricity toward applications.
3-Hydroxypropionic Acid Triggers Macroscopic Superlubricity on the Diamond-Like Carbon Film

Abstract:In this work, the macroscopic superlubricity with an extremely low coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.004 was achieved on the friction pair of the amorphous carbon (a-C) film / steel with the lubrication of 3-hydroxypropionic acid aqueous solution (3HPA (aq) ). The excellent lubrication performance was ascribed to the solid-liquid synergistic lubrication effect between the a-C film and the 3HPA. The triboreaction occurred on the friction pair, resulting in the chemisorption of 3HPA molecules on the a-C film and the formation of carboxylates on the steel surface. The hydrated water layer was formed on the chemisorption layer through the hydrogen bonding with water, which contributed to the reduction of COF. Moreover, the feasible graphitization of a-C film also played an important role on the achievement of superlubricity. This work presented a novel approach for achieving superlubricity on the diamond-like carbon (DLC) and provided support on the development of DLC lubrication in industrial applications.

Abstract:In the past decade, significant breakthroughs have been made in uncovering the superlubricity mechanism and in developing superlubric materials. However, most works have concentrated on nanoscale two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials, which are still a challenge for industrial scale-up. Meanwhile, although some hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films show superlubricty, how to break through the components and restrict the nanostructure is in the struggle because commercial a-C:H films with a friction coefficient beyond 0.05 are far from superlubricity (<0.01). To address these problems, we used ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATTM) as an additive to synergize with an a-C:H film to realize superlubricity on a 9Cr18Mo steel surface in argon and nitrogen atmospheres. Thanks to the flash heating and shear force during friction, the ATTM can be decovoluted into molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and sulfur monomer (S8), which are naturally irrational in lattice parameters, i.e., incommensurate contact between MoS2 and S8 is the key to superlubricity. A comparative study shows that a-C:H here not only helps to anchor ATTM to inhibit easy slip at the beginning but also plays an anti-wear role for 9Cr18Mo steel in superlubricious states. Our work opens a new notion to scale up structure superlubricity for industrial application.
Genesis of Superlow Friction in Strengthening Si-DLC/PLC Nanostructured Multilayer Films for Robust Superlubricity at Ultrahigh Contact Stress.

Abstract:Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have significant potential to provide solutions for the friction reduction and the lubricity problem of mechanical moving friction pairs. However, the realization of excellent lubrication or even superlubricity and long lifetime under heavy loading conditions is still a great challenge, which is crucial for the applications of DLC in harsh environments. Here, we construct a group of property-strengthening Si-DLC/PLC multilayer films that could withstand ultrahigh contact stresses and achieve robust superlubricity. Under a peak Hertz contact stress of up to 2.37 GPa, the setup of a bilayer thickness of 324 nm enables the multilayered film (an overall film thickness of 1.53 μm) to achieve a superlow coefficient of friction toward 0.001 and an ultralow wear rate of 3.13 × 10-9 mm3/Nm. An alternating load reciprocating friction test emphasizes that this strengthening nanostructured Si-DLC/PLC multilayer possesses a kind of load self-adaptation because of its in situ nanoclustering transformation and local ordering of sp2-C phases at the sliding interface. The genesis of self-adaptation to the applied load is evaluated comprehensively to reveal its strengthening and toughening structural characteristics and robustness of the near-zero friction and wear features. The findings provide a significant design criterion for carbon-based solid lubricants applicable to harsh loading environments.
Atomic-scale Insights into the Interfacial Instability of Superlubricity in Hydrogenated Amorphous Carbon Films

Abstract:The origin of instability or even disappearance of the superlubricity state in hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) film in the presence of oxygen or water molecules is still controversial. Here, we address this puzzle regarding the tribochemical activities of sliding interfaces at the nanoscale. The results reveal that gaseous oxygen molecules disable the antifriction capacity of a-C:H by surface dehydrogenation of tribo-affected hydrocarbon bonds. In comparison, oxygen incorporation into the hydrocarbon matrix induces the formation of a low-density surface shear band, owing to which the friction state depends on the oxygen content. High friction of a-C:H film in humid environment originates from the “tumor-like” heterogeneous structures as formed in the highly oxidized tribolayer. Notably, an appropriate doping of silicon can completely shield the moisture effect by forming a silica-like tribolayer. These outcomes shed substantial lights upon the roadmap for achieving robust superlubricity of carbon films in a wide range of environments.
Diamond-like carbon coating under oleic acid lubrication: Evidence for graphene oxide formation in superlow friction

Abstract:The achievement of the superlubricity regime, with a friction coefficient below 0.01, is the Holy Grail of many tribological applications, with the potential to have a remarkable impact on economic and environmental issues. Based on a combined high-resolution photoemission and soft X-ray absorption study, we report that superlubricity can be realized for engineering applications in bearing steel coated with ultra-smooth tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) under oleic acid lubrication. The results show that tribochemical reactions promoted by the oil lubrication generate strong structural changes in the carbon hybridization of the ta-C hydrogen-free carbon, with initially high sp3 content. Interestingly, the macroscopic superlow friction regime of moving mechanical assemblies coated with ta-C can be attributed to a few partially oxidized graphene-like sheets, with a thickness of not more than 1 nm, formed at the surface inside the wear scar. The sp2 planar carbon and oxygen-derived species are the hallmark of these mesoscopic surface structures created on top of colliding asperities as a result of the tribochemical reactions induced by the oleic acid lubrication. Atomistic simulations elucidate the tribo-formation of such graphene-like structures, providing the link between the overall atomistic mechanism and the macroscopic experimental observations of green superlubricity in the investigated ta-C/oleic acid tribological systems.

Abstract:Carbon-containing tribofilms have attracted significant interest in the lubrication research despite a scarcity of information on their high-temperature performance under severe boundary conditions. In this study, high-temperature lubrication of the carbon tribofilm produced from cyclopropane carboxylic acid (CPCa) and NiAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles was evaluated. NiAl-LDH nanoparticles significantly enhanced the friction stability and antiwear performance of CPCa by over 90% at 50 o C and 100 o C, comparable to the benchmark zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs). The highly graphitic amorphous carbon tribofilms and the fine-grain intermediate tribolayer constructed by the thermal decomposition products of NiAl-LDH contributed to such excellent lubrication performance. This study paves a pathway in developing functional anti-wear additives for the durable and high-performance carbon-containing tribofilms at high temperatures.
