Abstract:Broadband Near-infrared phosphors have attracted great attention for its potential applications in pc-LED as a novel light source for substance measurements based on NIR spectroscopy. Here, CaMgSi2O6:xCr3+ diopside phosphor were prepared by high temperature solid-state reaction. The Cr3+emission band undergoes a red-shift from 772 nm to 822 nm followed with band broadening from 132 nm to 197 nm with the increase of x from 0.25% to 6%. Highly thermal stability with the quenching temperature as high as 355 °C for 1% and 236 °C for 4% Cr3+ concentrations are observed. NIR pc-LEDs were fabricated and high NIR output power of 42.04 mW for the bandwidth of 150 nm and 23.73 mW for a more broaden bandwidth of 187 nm are achieved at 100 mA drive current, respectively. Our results suggest that CaMgSi2O6:Cr3+phosphors have great potential for applications in broadband NIR pc-LED applications.

Abstract:Broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) is a new generation of light source for spectroscopy applications. Current studies generate a broad continuous NIR spectrum to promise the detection of a wide range of substances. This paper reports a discontinuous NIR spectral distribution peaking at 760 and 1400 nm, respectively, by co-doping Cr3+ and Ni2+ ions into CaLu2Mg2Si3O12 garnet. The benefit of such a discontinuous spectrum is its ability to prevent energy waste in specific applications, such as moisture (freshness) and hemoglobin detection, where only spectral bands near 750 and 1500 nm are required. The discontinuous spectrum is attributed to the energy transfer from Cr3+ to Ni2+ ions. The NIR pc-LED fabricated by the new phosphor shows photoelectric efficiency of 9.12%@10 mA and NIR output power of 11.44 mW@100 mA. The NIR pc-LED also performs well when measuring alcohol solution where only a discontinuous spectrum is needed. These results highlight the potential of NIR phosphors with a discontinuous spectrum across a broad 700–1600 nm range.
Broadband Ca3MgZrGe3O12:Cr3+ Garnet Phosphor for High-performance NIR pc-LED Application

Abstract:The near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) is heavily reliant upon the performance of NIR phosphors. However, the current NIR pc-LEDs suffer from low photoelectric efficiency and insufficient near-infrared output power. In this study, Cr3+ doped Ca3MgZrGe3O12 phosphors leading to high-performance NIR pc-LED were developed for the first time. It features a robust and wide NIR emission that extends over the spectrum from 650 to 1100 nm with a full width at half maximum of 120 nm, a high quantum yield of 82% and excellent thermal stability of T50%=250oC and I150oC=80% when excited at 460 nm. The NIR pc-LED was constructed by combining the Ca3MgZrGe3O12:0.04Cr3+ phosphor with a blue LED chip, resulting in a device that exhibits a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 20% and a near-infrared output power of 54.19 mW when operated at a current of 100 mA. The obtained luminous efficacy is superior to the vast majority of current broadband near-infrared pc-LEDs. In addition, this NIR pc-LED exhibiting strong penetration and the applications in bio-imagines are demonstrated. The results indicate that Ca3MgZrGe3O12:Cr3+ are efficient NIR broadband phosphors for NIR pc-LEDs.

Abstract:Broadband near‐infrared (NIR) phosphor‐converted light emitting diode (pc‐LED) is demanded for wearable biosensing devices, but it suffers from low efficiency and low radiance. This study reports a broadband NIR Ca3‐xLuxHf2Al2+xSi1−xO12:Cr3+ garnet phosphor with emission intensity enhanced by 81.5 times. Chemical unit co‐substitution of [Lu3+−Al3+] for [Ca2+−Si4+] is responsible for the luminescence enhancement and further alters the crystal structure and electronic properties of the garnet. Using the optimized phosphor, a NIR pc‐LED with photoelectric efficiencies of 21.28%@10 mA, 15.75%@100 mA and NIR output powers of 46.09 mW@100 mA, 54.29 mW@130 mA is fabricated. The high power NIR light is observed to penetrate upper arms (≈8 cm). For application in NIR spectroscopy, the NIR pc‐LED is used as light source to measure transmission spectra of water, alcohol, and bovine hemoglobin solution. These results indicate the NIR garnet phosphor to be a promising candidate for NIR pc‐LED.

However, efficient broadband NIR phosphors with a peak emission wavelength longer than 800 nm are deficient. In this study, CaMgGe2O6:Cr3+ phosphor was prepared by a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The phosphor doped with 0.02Cr3+ showed an emission band at 845 nm with a broad bandwidth of 160 nm and a high quantum yield of 84% under 450 nm excitation. The broadband NIR pc-LED was fabricated using CaMgGe2O6:0.02Cr3+ phosphor based on a blue light-emitting diode (LED) chip. A photoelectric efficiency of 27.2% @ 10 mA and an NIR output power of 57.98 mW @ 100 mA were achieved, which are the highest values reported yet for broadband NIR pc-LEDs with a peak wavelength longer than 800 nm. Using the fabricated NIR pc-LED as the light source, the characteristic absorption spectra of some substances were obtained. All of the results indicated that the CaMgGe2O6:Cr3+ phosphor has considerable potential in near-infrared spectroscopic applications.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, there has been a growing demand for broadband near‐infrared (NIR) phosphor. The paper proposes a novel Cr 3+ doped Ca 2 Y 3 Sb 3 O 14 phosphor through basic research of Ca 2 Ln 3 Sb 3 O 14 : Cr 3+ (Ln = Sc, Lu, and Y) phosphor. Under 467 nm excitation, Ca 2 Y 3 Sb 3 O 14 : Cr 3+ phosphor shows a broad NIR emission band (650–950 nm) centered at 776 nm with a full width at half‐maximum of 110 nm. The optimal Cr 3+ doping concentration is 0.05, with an internal quantum efficiency of 78%. Meanwhile, the photoluminescence emission intensity at 373 K remains 61.3% of that at room temperature. Using phosphor‐in‐glass technology, a glass–ceramic plate showed a slight improvement in its thermal stability compared to the pure phosphor. Combining Ca 2 Y 3 Sb 3 O 14 : 0.05Cr 3+ phosphor with a commercial blue‐light‐emitting chip presents an output power of 44.51 mW with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 14.78% at a drive current of 100 mA. These results suggest that the Ca 2 Y 3 Sb 3 O 14 : Cr 3+ phosphor has great potential in the pc‐light‐emitting diodes.

Abstract:The Cr3+-doped near-infrared (NIR) phosphors have been extensively investigated owing to their promising applications in biomedicine, food safety detection, and night vision surveillance. However, achieving broadband (FWHM > 160 nm) NIR emission is still challenging. In this paper, novel Y2Mg2Ga2-xSi2O12:xCr3+ (YMGS:xCr3+, x = 0.005-0.08) phosphors were prepared by a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The crystal structure, photoluminescence properties of the phosphor, and the device performance of a pc-LED were researched in detail. When excited at 440 nm, the YMGS:0.04Cr3+ phosphor exhibited broadband emission in the range of 650-1000 nm, peaking at 790 nm with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of up to 180 nm. The wide FWHM of YMGS:Cr3+ is conducive to its extensive application in NIR spectroscopic technology. In addition, the YMGS:0.04Cr3+ phosphor could maintain 70% of the initial emission intensity at 373 K. By combining the commercial blue chip with the YMGS:0.04Cr3+ phosphor, the resulting NIR pc-LED demonstrated a near-infrared output power of 14 mW with a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 5% at a drive current of 100 mA. This work provides a broadband emission NIR phosphor option for NIR pc-LED devices.
High‐Performance Tunable Near‐Infrared Emitters of Cr3+‐Activated Garnet Phosphor Enabled by Chemical Unit Co‐Substitution

Abstract:Through a chemical unit co‐substitution strategy, the narowband‐emitting Lu3Ga5O12:6%Cr3+ is transformed into a broadband‐emitting Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+. Simultaneously, the internal quantum efficiency is increased to 80.7% while maintaining good thermal stability (I423 K = 80.4%). Ultimately, a prototype NIR pc‐LED with Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+ is fabricated and exhibited superior electro‐optical conversion efficiency (13.31%@100 mA). The escalating demand for portable near‐infrared (NIR) light sources has posed a formidable challenge to the development of NIR phosphors characterized by high efficiency and exceptional thermal stability. Taking inspiration from the chemical unit co‐substitution strategy, high‐performance tunable (Lu3‐xCax)(Ga5‐xGex)O12:6%Cr3+ (x = 0–3) phosphors are designed with an emission center from 704 to 780 nm and a broadest full width at half maximum (FWHM) of up to 172 nm by introducing Ca2+ and Ge4+ ions into the garnet structure. In particular, Lu3Ga5O12:6%Cr3+ demonstrates an anti‐thermal quenching phenomenon (I423K = 113.1%). Compared to Lu3Ga5O12:6%Cr3+, Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+ exhibits significantly improved FWHM and IQE by 108 nm and 25.5%, respectively, while maintaining good thermal stability (I423K = 80.4%). Finally, Lu2CaGa4GeO12:6%Cr3+ phosphor is combined with a 465 nm blue LED chip to fabricate NIR LED devices, exhibiting a NIR electroluminescence efficiency of 13.31%@100 mA and demonstrating successful applications in nocturnal illumination and biomedical imaging technology. This work offers a fresh perspective on the design of highly efficient NIR garnet phosphors.

Abstract:Near-infrared phosphor converted light emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs), as a compact light source, play a constructive role in wearable optical biosensing devices. In order to detect the properties of different substances, the NIR emission should be as wide as possible. The typical strategy for broadening the band is the superposition emission of Cr3+ and Yb3+, the bandwidth of which is 300–320 nm, and it needs to be further broadened. In this paper, NIR Ca2LuZr2Al3O12 garnet phosphor, co-activated by Cr3+ and Nd3+, is prepared. The emission quantum efficiencies of Nd3+ at 900 nm and 1060 nm are close to 100%, and the emission band is complementary to that of Yb3+ at 1030 nm. An efficient super broadband NIR pc-LEDs (47.6 mW@100 mA), with the bandwidth of 350 nm, are achieved. The bandwidth and the efficiency of the pc-LEDs are improved greatly, compared with other reported ones.

Abstract:A novel near-infrared (NIR) emitting Cr3+-doped clinopyroxene NaInSi2O6 phosphor is designed and synthesized by solid-state method. There are three absorption bands in the NaInSi2O6: 0.04Cr3+ phosphor, peaking at ∼300 nm, ∼470 nm and ∼690 nm, respectively. A broad emission band ranging from 700 nm to 1300 nm is detected at 466 nm excitation, peaking at 936 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 151 nm. At the same time, the calculated weak crystal field strength of Cr3+ is 1.93 in the NaInSi2O6 host, resulting in its characteristic broadband emission. Furthermore, the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of NaInSi2O6: 0.04Cr3+ are 68.9% and 27.4%. The integrated emission intensity of NaInSi2O6: 0.04Cr3+ at 423 K retains 55.2% of that at 293 K. By contrast, the NaInSi2O6: 0.04Cr3+-based phosphor-in-glass (PiG) exhibits better thermal stability (64.9%@423 K). A NIR phosphor-converted light emitting diode (pc-LED) was manufactured using a InGaN chip and NaInSi2O6: 0.04Cr3+, presenting the NIR output power of 30.47 mW@200 mA. Used as a NIR light source, the prepared pc-LED shows good promise in the fields of biological tissue imaging and night vision.

Abstract:Near infrared spectroscopy is a simple, fast, and non-invasive technique for detecting the composition of substances. However, most NIR phosphors cannot cover the near-infrared I and II regions, which limits the types of substances that can be detected. Herein, Cr3+, 3 + , Ni2+ 2 + co-activated NIR Y3Al2Ga3O12(YAGG) 3 Al 2 Ga 3 O 12 (YAGG) garnet phosphors were synthesized via high-temperature solid-phase method. Due to the energy transfer from Cr3+ 3 + to Ni2+, 2 + , the emission spectra of YAGG: Cr3+, 3 + , Ni2+ 2 + are composed of NIR I emission of Cr3+ 3 + at 710 nm and NIR II emission of Ni2+ 2 + at 1420 nm. The measured internal and external quantum efficiencies of YAGG: 0.08Cr3+, 3 + , 0.005Ni2+ 2 + under 450 nm excitation are 54.4 %, and 26.7 %, respectively. This sample was selected to fabricate pc-LEDs, and fill the emission spectrum gap with Mg2GeO4: 2 GeO 4 : 0.01Cr3+. 3 + . The pc-LED fabricated with PiG film do not exhibit strong characteristic absorption in NIR II region, significantly reduce the re-absorption and thermal quenching of the phosphors. The electro-optical conversion efficiency of PiG pc-LED reaches 6.49% at 10 mA; The results indicate that YAGG: Cr3+, 3 + , Ni2+ 2 + and the fabricated NIR pc-LED are good near-infrared substance detection light source scheme.

Abstract:Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a rapid, non-destructive analytical characterization tool. In this study, we report near-infrared (NIR) phosphor Ca3MgTiGe3O12:Cr3+ in garnet system, achieving ultra-broadband NIR emission. The emission spectrum of the phosphor ranges from 690 nm–1100 nm with a full width of half maximum (FWHM) value of ∼127 nm. The emission peak is observed at 786 nm when the excitation wavelength is 463 nm. The broadband emission seen in this study was identified as a result of 4T2 → 4A2 transition of Cr3+ in host lattice. The internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of the material was found to be as high as 66.5 %. The energy transfer mechanism, quantum yield, thermal stability and preparation conditions of the material were further investigated. These studies show that these materials with highly-efficient ultra-brosd near-infrared emissions are promising candidates for high-quality near-infrared light sources.

Abstract:Cr3+ doped phosphor shows great potential for near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting diodes (LED), but it suffers from low quantum efficiency and poor thermal stability. Herein, a novel Cr3+ doped broadband NIR garnet Ca3Sc2Ge3O12 phosphor was developed. The multisite structure of the emission band is investigated by site-selective spectroscopy and is attributed to the octahedral Cr3+ perturbed by defects. Moreover, we propose different strategies to enhance the luminescence of the phosphor, including enhancement of crystallinity and elimination of defects. Compared with the initial sample, the emission intensity of the optimized phosphor is improved for 8.6 times. The optimal Ca3Sc2Ge3O12: 0.06Cr3+ phosphor exhibits excellent thermal stability. At 423 K, the integral emission intensity of the optimal sample remains 94.7% of that at room temperature. Finally, high-performance NIR LED was fabricated using a blue LED and the title phosphor. The packaged LED lamp has high radiance (109.3 mW@300 mA) and photoelectric efficiency (15.96%@40 mA). Our study not only provides a boulevard for enhancing the luminescence of Cr doped NIR phosphor, but also gives a new perspective for understanding the multisite luminescence of Cr3+ in garnet host.

Abstract:Abstract The burgeoning phosphor‐converted near‐infrared light‐emitting diodes (pc‐NIR LEDs) have important applications in special illumination and spectroscopy analysis. However, the development of efficient NIR‐emitting phosphors with high performance is still a challenge. In this work, a chemical unit co‐substitution strategy is proposed to realize the excitation transition regulation and successfully achieve high‐performance NIR luminescence in Ca 3‐ y Na y Mg 1‐ y Sb 2‐ x Al 2+ y O 12 : x Cr 3+ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.05, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1) garnet‐type solid solution phosphors. Through the excitation transition modulation from the 4 A 2 ground state to the 4 T 1 ( 4 P) and 4 T 1 ( 4 F) excitation state, the excitation intensity at the blue light region is largely enhanced by 25.6 times. Moreover, the NIR‐emitting efficiency and thermal stability are improved, with the optimal luminescence internal quantum efficiency of 90.6% and thermal stability of 97%@423 K, without any flux‐assisted sintering or reduction atmosphere protection. The structure regulation induced small Stokes shift, weak electron‐phonon coupling effect, and decreased non‐radiative transition are responsible for the excellent NIR‐emitting performance. Finally, the NIR pc‐LED is fabricated with photoelectric efficiencies of 18.7%@100 mA and NIR output powers of 63 mW@100 mA, presenting potential applications in nondestructive internal defect detection, veins imaging, and night vision surveillance.

Abstract:Generally, crystal field engineering is an important means to regulate Cr3+ luminescence in near-infrared (NIR) phosphors. Host cation substitutions, including single substitutions, double substitutions, and even multiple substitutions, are widely used as a common means to modify the crystal field of Cr3+-activated phosphors. However, the tunable range using this strategy is usually limited because it is susceptible to the limitation of the host and its initial structure. In this work, we designed and synthesized a new type of controllable NIR-emitting phosphor Li2Mg3TiO6:Cr3+ using a new Cr3+ luminescent ion substitution strategy in which a double Cr3+ ion unit [Cr3+-Cr3+] was employed to replace a [Mg2+-Ti4+] unit to balance the charge. Just by changing the concentration of Cr3+, the NIR emission peak of the phosphor can be regularly adjusted from 720 to 920 nm, and the full width at half maximum reaches 258 nm. The internal quantum efficiency and external quantum efficiency of the Li2Mg3TiO6:0.03Cr(3+) sample are measured to be 72.1 and 28.1%, respectively. An NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diode (pc-LED) is fabricated by the LMT:Cr3+ phosphor and a blue chip, and the radiant fluxes of 31.09 mW@(3 V similar to 100 mA) and 71.56 mW@(3 V similar to 420 mA) are achieved. The results confirmed that the luminescence material has great application potential in the field of NIR spectroscopy.

Abstract:It is urgent and crucial to develop highly efficient broadband Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) which are applied in tiny solid-state NIR light sources. However, a lot of NIR phosphors suffer from low quantum yield and poor thermal stability in recent years. Hereon, the solid-state reaction synthesis process was used to create a new garnet Ca2GdZr2Ga3O12:Cr3+ (CGZG:Cr3+) phosphor, which can produce a broad range emission peak at (12437 cm-1, 804nm) with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of (67567cm-1, 148nm). At 373 °C, thermal stability was determined to be 76%, an IQE of 75% and an EQE of 26% was observed. When driving current at 150mA and 320mA, the device achieved the output power of 473mW and 968mW. The results demonstrate CGZG:Cr3+ phosphor-convert NIR LEDs have great potential for applications in night-vision and biomedical imaging NIR spectroscopy technology.

Abstract:Cr3+-doped near-infrared (NIR) phosphors exhibit peculiar advantages in fabricating NIR phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (NIR pc-LEDs) for machine/night vision, plant cultivation, and nondestruction detection. However, efficient NIR phosphors doped with Cr3+ usually contain noble/rare metal ions such as In, Sc, Ga, and Ge, thus making it an essential mission to develop much cheaper NIR phosphors. In this work, we report an inexpensive broadband NIR phosphor, La2MgSnO6:Cr3+ (LMS:Cr3+), that can be easily synthesized in air. LMS:Cr3+ has two distorted octahedra lattice sites for Cr3+ doping and displays a wide emission spectrum covering the range of 600-1200 nm with an emission maximum of 751 nm and a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 104 nm under 450 nm excitation. The broadband NIR emission originated from two distinct crystallographic sites and a medium-strength crystal field for Cr3+. LMS:Cr3+ shows an optical band gap of 3.72 eV, and its emission intensity can still maintain 68.5% at 423 K. Finally, a prototype NIR pc-LED fabricated by combining LMS:0.01Cr(3+) and a blue LED is demonstrated for applications in plant cultivation, night vision, and recognition of cultural relics.

Abstract:In the past decade, the near -infrared (NIR) phosphor -converted light emitting diode (pc -LED) and NIR phosphors has made considerable progress. However, for the field of non-destructive testing, ultra -wide Vis-NIR pc -LED light source can detect a wider range of components compared to NIR pc -LED. Therefore, the development of high-performance ultra -wide Vis-NIR phosphors is quite necessary. Based on the CaLu 2 Mg 2 Si 3 O 12 (CLMSO):Cr 3+ with excellent performance, this article proposes the introduction of activator Ce 3+ into CLMSO:Cr 3+ phosphor, which significantly increase the emission band -width. Co -doped phosphor exhibit excellent thermal stability (maintain 75 % room temperature intensity @ 150 degrees C). The Vis-NIR light output power can reached 64.4 mW @ 100 mA and 60.9 mW@ 100 mA for pc -LED fabricated with CLMSO:0.01Ce 3+ , 0.001Cr 3+ and CLMSO:0.01Ce 3+ , 0.002Cr 3+ with the electricity to Vis-NIR conversion efficiency reached 30.5 %@10 mA and 29.5 % @10 mA, respectively. The CLMSO: Ce 3+ , Cr 3+ phosphor is expected to become the new generation light sources for miniaturized spectrometer.
