Abstract:Central to van Zoonen’s feminist concerns is the idea that culture – art, film, literature, the media, etc. – plays a crucial role in informing audiences, both past and present, of the gender-based roles that they ought to assume. Her concern in investigating contemporary culture is to isolate the processes that have allowed patriarchal ideals to become the dominant ideological force that shapes gender expectations today – a force, van Zoonen argues, that has resulted in the widespread subjugation of women across society. Central to Liesbet van Zoonen’s feminist concerns is the idea that culture – art, film, literature, and the media – plays a crucial role in informing audiences, both past and present, of the gender-based roles that they ought to assume. Using Laura Mulvey’s psychoanalytic feminist readings of Hollywood, van Zoonen argues that the dominant representation of femininity in Western media is one that objectifies womanhood. The widespread practice of objectifying women, she argues, degrades and dehumanises females, while giving male viewers, for whom women are sexualised, an unspoken exploitative power that spills into real world relations. The powerlessness of women in the media is constructed through cinematic tilt downs, low eyeline compositions or soft-focus framing, while costume and make-up conventions further sexualise female media inclusion. In the media, too, there is some evidence to suggest that fourth wave feminism is radicalising female representation.

Abstract:In recent years, celebrity and popular culture have figured as key sites in the mediated resurgence of feminism, producing competing and contested articulations of feminism as a ‘popular’ phenomenon [Banet-Weiser, S. and Portwood-Stacer, L., 2017. The traffic in feminism: an introduction to the commentary and criticism on popular feminism. Feminist media studies, 17, 884–888]. Drawing on interviews with self-identifying feminists who primarily learn about and engage with feminism through digital culture, this article aims to connect and extend debates over the aims, logics and limits of popular feminism by foregrounding the affective, lived negotiations of feminist identity at this moment. This pilot project research suggests that the very logics of individuality and authenticity underpinning celebrity shape personal understandings and negotiations of feminism. I discuss two significant dynamics in these negotiations. First, celebrity becomes an accessible means of both understanding and classifying ‘good’ or ‘bad’ feminism, organized under the poles of ‘white feminism’ and ‘intersectional feminism’ [Crenshaw, P. 1989. Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics. University of Chicago legal forum, 140, 139–167]. Second, in the context of the surveillance politics of social media, and broader neoliberal governmental injunctions to continually work on one’s ‘character’ [Bull, A. and Allen, K. 2018. Introduction: Sociological Interrogations of the Turn to Character. Sociological research online, 23(2), 392–398], authentic feminist identity becomes entangled with practices of perfecting and disciplining the self. The self is re-conceptualized as a ‘platform’ through which marginalized others are included. Via these celebrity logics, the pursuit of an intersectional feminist identity paradoxically obscures the reinvigoration of practices of middle-class whiteness centred on self-monitoring, self-actualization and the disavowal of complicity.

Abstract:In a move that has now been thoroughly documented, the Anglophone West of the past decade or so has become an environment in which feminism is popular . Film and television, and the discourses around them, have been central to this development, with productions from Eternals (Chloé Zhao, 2021) to Fleabag (2016-2019) to Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023) prompting an infoglut of commentary that foregrounds and debates the feminist credentials of a wave of new media content that centres women as both characters and creators. But what does it mean to label this content 'feminist'? Focusing on screen culture and education, the short reflections in this forum consider the tensions of this moment from a variety of perspectives – teaching, screen production, criticism, history and the academy.

The feminist frontier: on trans and feminism

Abstract:Against a back-drop of ongoing hostility between sections of feminism towards trans communities, and particularly feminist antagonism towards trans women, this paper explores the relationship between feminism and transgender. Through the use of original case study material, gathered by virtual methods, the paper explores events that have occurred since the millennium that are used to highlight particular epistemological and political tensions between feminism and trans. Central themes running through the case studies include the constitution of ‘woman’, the policing of feminist identities and spaces, and questions of bodily autonomy. In conclusion, the paper stresses the importance of rejecting trans-exclusionary feminism and of foregrounding the links between feminism and transgender as a key social justice project of our time.

Abstract:Twenty-five years ago, at the time of writing, Patricia Erens, in her introduction to Issues in Feminist Film Criticism, wrote that “the rise of feminist film criticism is an outgrowth of the women’s movement, which began in the United States in the late 1960s, of feminist scholarship in a variety of disciplines, and of women’s filmmaking.” [1] [#N1] Less than twenty years after the publications of Molly Haskell’s From Reverence to Rape: The Treatment of Women at the Movies and Laura Mulvey’s “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” (the fortieth anniversary of which was marked in academic and public forums in 2015), Erens is already reflecting on the history of feminist film criticism at a moment when it was on the precipice of being both challenged and expanded by the rise in gender studies and media studies. As feminist film scholars looking back on these developments from our contemporary vantage point , it seems appropriate to consider what kind of challenges feminist film criticism may now be facing.

Abstract:European Journal of Cultural Studies, Ahead of Print. This article provides a critical overview of gender equality talk within the media, arts and cultural industries, focusing on a case study of Australian cultural policy discourse from the 1970s to 2020s. It aims to expand on existing understandings of postfeminism and popular feminism by exploring how these sensibilities have been taken up and expressed within arts and cultural policy discourse. How has the problem of the cultural gender gap previously been understood? And how has that changed in light of increased public attention to feminist concerns? While there are important differences across the decades there are also recurring notions of pragmatism, self-empowerment, resilience, vigilance and trickle-down logics – which cultivate a sense of movement without progress. By looking at policy discourses and gender equality talk through a longer lens, considering situations of feminist visibility and invisibility, acceptance and repudiation, and inequalities that are speakable and unspeakable, we see how inequalities in the creative and cultural industries come to be both enduring and endurable.

Abstract:In today's world, feminist thinking is flourishing, and scholars are increasingly concerned about women's groups, queer groups and other disadvantaged groups, with ideas that are becoming more open and diverse. Along with this change in the world landscape, feminism has gained more momentum, and Jane Eyre, an exemplary feminist masterpiece, has been widely studied by scholars. So this essay focuses on the writings of Jane Eyre, looking at the 'madwoman' Mason in the book, exploring the blurring and demonisation of the role of women, and considering the modern development of feminism. By closely reading the text and combining it with Spivak's theoretical framework of feminism, this paper aims to discover how the discourse on women's groups has been colonised in society and how feminism has been underdeveloped. The result is that reality, like fiction, has a habit of obscuring and demonising the female community and men are induced to obscure and demonise women through discourse, thereby consolidating male-centred hegemony. There is still a long way to go regarding women's liberation, equality and freedom. Women need to make aware of their disadvantages and inequality from the inside out, to understand clearly the methods men use to demonise women, to learn how to counteract these methods and to give women a voice. Women need to be self-respecting and confident and unite the strength of spirit of women and the disadvantaged to fight uncompromisingly against all hegemony and for the human rights to which they are entitled.

Abstract:Focusing on Rosamond Lehmann's The Weather in the Streets, Rose Macaulay's Dangerous Ages and E. H. Young's William, this article examines the representation of young romantic heroines in the context of emergent discourses on women's sexuality, marriage and motherhood. It is argued that these heroines, ambivalent and tentative in their quest for sexual modernity, represent the middlebrow's moral stance that reflects the paradoxical attitude of the interwar era towards modern women. A juxtaposition of these texts reveals a battle of varying versions of femininity, while a fine balance is mediated between the progressive and conservative ends of the middlebrow spectrum of values.

Abstract:With the development of the times, topics related to feminism have been receiving more and more attention, women's past life experiences have been collected and amplified through various media, and women's voices have been summarized and expressed. As one of the mediums of expression, film, and television dramas have attracted a lot of attention in recent years, and there are a lot of characteristic and representative female roles in them, and the discussion voices on these roles have been reconstructed and re-propagated on the Internet and in real life. The paper believes that female roles in film and television dramas are closely related to those in real life. This thesis, through the literature method and case study method, adopts three discourse types, namely, Doing Gender, Undoing Gender, Non-cooperative and Entrepreneurial, to compare and discuss female roles in film and television dramas, and to study modern women's self-worth and explore the awakening of women's consciousness. From the study, it is concluded that the path of feminism is still winding because of the diverse and ambiguous types of feminist discourse.

Abstract:What does feminist theory have to offer sociology? Defining feminist theory as work that problematizes the gender binary and the relations of domination that constitute and emerge from it, we explore four key aspects of feminist scholarship. We begin with work that explores gender as a structuring trope. We then turn to how gender is coconstituted with other structures of power and domination. Next, we survey how feminists have theorized the relationship between nature and the social through the body. Finally, we examine feminist epistemological claims. We conclude by demonstrating the inextricability of feminist conceptual work and feminist politics. As we move across these bodies of work, we show how they are linked with one another and suggest some of the ways in which thinking like a feminist would help sociologists better grasp the dynamics of the social worlds we study.

Post-feminism and Chick Flicks in China: Subjects, Discursive Origin and New Gender Norms

Abstract:Most research on post-feminist culture has been conducted in the Western context. Within the very limited scholarship on post-feminism in China, the conception of globally transmitted and duplicable post-feminism is dominant, which is usually rationalized in the global expansion of neo-liberalism. This article, however, argues that post-feminism in China exists but encapsulates notable distinctions from its Western counterpart, in terms of the class of its subjects, female elites' relationship with the state, and post-feminism's entanglement with local feminisms. To emphasize the transnational perspective, I would like to coin a new term for the Chinese equivalent of post-feminism, what I will call "consumerist pseudo-feminism" (消费主义伪女权), acknowledging the buzzwords 'consumerism' and 'pseudo-feminism' that are frequently used in the Chinese media. Anchored to this reconceptualization, Chinese chick flicks, burgeoning genre films with its niche audience of middle-class young women are analyzed. Through close-reading, I would like to investigate how consumerist pseudo-feminism is represented in terms of middle-class women's fantasies, the rhetoric of women's empowerment, and new gender norms.

Abstract:This paper makes an in-depth analysis of the "Peaky Blinders" from the aspects of role setting and plot arrangement from the standpoint of feminism, and tries to explain the breakthrough of the play in reshaping the female image and constructing the main body of female mainstream ideology. In the "Peaky Blinders", we can see the development process of feminist creative ideas from "the initial stage of essentialism tendency" to "the transitional stage of collision and integration of different feminist ideas" to "the experimental stage of trying a variety of feminist expressions" and then to "the personality stage of giving up ideas and free expression" which reflects women's recovery of initiative, women are the core and master their own emotional life. Through the analysis of the origin and development of feminism and the creation of female characters in the "Peaky Blinders", this paper reveals the great significance of female characters and tries to provide ideas for the process of creating them in film and television works for the long-term production. European and American female TV dramas can be regarded as an early and systematic bold practice of "she culture" in the field of film and television popular culture, providing rich content and various types of image texts. The image world in European and American female TV dramas corresponds to the real life under "her culture". It can be seen that European and American female TV dramas are new cultural products, which are closely related to the culture of the times and echo each other, which are its advantages. However, how to develop and improve in the future, how to develop new ideas and enrich the meaning of the text, and maintain fresh vitality and keen cultural insight are what European and American female TV dramas should think and adjust at this stage.

In recent years, led by celebrities and various feminist organizations, a new wave of feminism has been making waves around the world. The popularity of women's topics continues unabated, and feminist literary works are increasingly presented to the public. This paper starts from the feminism in British and American literature, analyzes the female images in some classic British and American literature, and expounds the influence of the embodiment of female consciousness on British and American literature.

Abstract:The phenomenal success of romances has naturally stirred the contempt of high culture critics, and more recently the concern of feminists, who have generally understood these narratives as promoting a kind of false consciousness, coating patriarchal values with a frosting of fantasy. The "Smithton women" appropriated romances as a pleasure strictly theirs, an antidote to the endless claims made on them by husbands and children, and a defense of "female" values like emotional sharing and (more or less) egalitarian marriage. [...]for many, regular reading of these books fed a kind of proto-feminism that made for real gains in their lives, within the limits patriarchy sets for women.

Abstract:The development of feminist jurisprudence in recent years has made a rich and fruitful contribution to legal theory. Few areas of domestic law have avoided the scrutiny of feminist writers, who have exposed the gender bias of apparently neutral systems of rules. A central feature of many western theories about law is that the law is an autonomous entity, distinct from the society it regulates. A legal system is regarded as different from a political or economic system, for example, because it operates on the basis of abstract rationality, and is thus universally applicable and capable of achieving neutrality and objectivity. These attributes are held to give the law its special authority. More radical theories have challenged this abstract rationalism, arguing that legal analysis cannot be separated from the political, economic, historical and cultural context in which people live. Some theorists argue that the law functions as a system of beliefs that make social, political and economic inequalities appear natural. Feminist jurisprudence builds on certain aspects of this critical strain in legal thought. It is much more focused and concrete, however, and derives its theoretical force from immediate experience of the role of the legal system in creating and perpetuating the unequal position of women.

Abstract:A number of links have been made between class domination and consumerism, which imply that femininity is a kind of weakness in working-class culture as a culture of resistance. It has often been assumed that in their role as consumers working-class women have helped to erode or disguise class differences. There have been many explanations of fashion which acknowledge its role in the expression of class difference in capitalist society, but they tend to perceive it as working automatically in the interests of dominant or privileged groups. Middle-class affluence and ‘conspicuous consumption’ are seen as means of exclusion–disidentification with other groups; whereas working-class affluence is seen as a means of emulation–identification with other groups. In the post–Second World War period, it was necessary for working-class markets to be found for commodities in order for capitalism to expand or even survive.

Abstract:In this introductory essay, we begin by discussing the attraction and limits of the ‘wave’ metaphor in feminist history and politics, before moving into a wider discussion of feminist subjectivity and agency. We then summarize the key issues, themes and objects/sites for contemporary feminists, before ending with some reflections on the changing character of feminist strategy. We argue that while the wave metaphor has been popular among feminists in many parts of Europe, it does not travel easily across national and regional borders, and should best be understood as a way of framing feminist practice, rather than referring to discreet cohorts of feminists. We can also discern a broader trend whereby preoccupations around the precise character of the feminist subject have given way to more diverse conceptions of feminist subjectivity in which the role of historically excluded constituencies within feminism – queers, lesibian, gay, bisexual and trans* women, black and minority ethnic women and indeed men – are, in some contexts, more visible. This is reflected in the practices of contemporary feminisms, in which the dominant approach is what we might call, following Bice Maiguashca, a ‘principled pragmatism’, characterized by a steadfast opposition to gender inequality alongside a degree of fluidity and flexibility in terms of the strategies and tactics used.

Abstract:The chapter considers gender and gender relationships, the WLM’s foundational touchstones. It highlights the politics of difference by drawing on memories of pro-feminist men, where hesitancy testifies to challenges of trust and reconciliation. It considers men’s violence and sexual abuse, sticking points for the deconstruction of gender but areas where traumatic memory is increasingly implicated. Looking at prominent and related WLM demands that became an arena for confrontative gender politics—the right to freedom from violence, and the right to define one’s own sexuality—the chapter looks at evolving ideas about gender from queer, transsexual (the 2015 Brighton Trans*Formed oral history presents new questions of negotiation) and black activists. It concludes with an edited interweaving of the oral histories of Catherine and Stuart Hall, luminaries of the WLM, New Left and black rights movements, which presents a captivating portrait of a relationship underpinned by political and personal struggles and growth. 150 words
The Evolution of Feminism in Chick Flicks from the Early 21st Century to the Present

Abstract:With Barbie making a strong comeback, chick movies, a commercial film genre that primarily concentrates on female characters, have recently become more popular in peoples eyes. The feminist underpinnings of this genre have also been well shown. However, there is still a research gap in the connection between feminism and the development of chick flicks from the early 21st century to the present. Therefore, this article uses feminist theory to analyze how feminism has evolved in chick flicks throughout this period as well as how typical chick flicks have developed during this time. According to the research, the development of chick flicks has gone through three stages: the peak period, the bottleneck period, and the return to the golden period. Meanwhile, feminism has evolved from focusing just on the rights and status of women to achieving gender equality and womens intellectual awakening. Conclusions can be drawn based on the analysis of this article given that chick movies are primarily about women and focus on womens issues: the evolution of feminism in chick flicks from the early 21st century to the present tends to appear in a better situation with the development of social feminism.

Abstract:This paper seeks to reflect on the ways in which a non-metropolitan academic feminist community engages with digital media to reimagine the discipline of Women's Studies, and consequently feminist politics. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in a Women's Studies Centre at a university in Tamil Nadu, India, this paper moves away from the framework of the digital as simply enabling or empowering, and instead seeks to examine these digital cultures as shaped by the particularities of their geographic coordinates, and as part of a larger media environment which is characterised as much by continuities as it is by innovations. In doing so, it attempts to understand feminisms as media phenomena that are actively shaped by and shaping media technologies and discourses. It argues that Women's Studies scholars in these locations, operating from hybrid geographical and digital places, enable the possibility of decentring feminist scholarship and thus allow for a reframing of the digital. To do this, it focuses on three distinct areas of engagement—the co-creation of knowledge in Tamil language Wikipedia, interactions on social media platforms, and their engagements with little magazines in their online avatars.
