Abstract:Exploiting renewable energy is an extremely effective strategy for alleviating and addressing the energy issues. To effectively harvest renewable energy, the investigations of fundamental thermodynamics resources of the sun and outer space have attracted significant attentions and various attempts have been carried out for energy-related applications. The key of effective energy harvesting and conserving from the sun and outer space relies on the precise manipulation of the electromagnetic responses including selective reflection, transmission, and absorption/emission in particular frequency ranges, which plays a critical role in various practical applications. According to the utilization of spectral bands, the electromagnetic responses are summarized into the single-band and multi-band characteristics. The single-band applications including the photovoltaic and photothermal conversion, thermal photons radiation, radiation cooling, and smart windows coatings, enable individually the utilization of the solar energy or the thermal radiation. In addition, the hybrid photovoltaic-thermal system and solar absorber/thermal emitter subtly synergize the photovoltaic and photothermal or thermal radiation through multi-band spectral modulation. In order to figure out the basic mechanisms of existing renewable energy technologies based on various electromagnetic responses, herein, we briefly summarize the optical characteristics from the perspective of spectral tuning and review their corresponding practical technologies. This article aims to provide a perspicuous mainline for existing spectral controlling work and to inspire other innovative optical tuning for potential energy applications.

Abstract:As a widespread, abundant and zero-emission renewable energy source, solar energy has garnered significant attention as a highly feasible alternative to fossil fuels in the global energy transition. However, low overall utilization efficiency is a considerable technical obstacle to the traditional solar energy systems. In recent decades, the full-spectrum solar energy systems, where diverse solar spectral conversion methods can be synergized based on the spectral splitting technology, becomes one of the most promising solutions. Therefore, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art full-spectrum solar energy systems based on spectral splitting technology. The four mainstream approaches of spectral splitting based on reflection, diffraction, refraction and absorption are introduced with the physical mechanisms and characteristics. Subsequently, tens of typical full-spectrum solar energy systems based on spectral splitting are categorized regarding energy flow topology into 4 major modes and 17 sub-modes with respective detailed analysis focused on the system integration and distinctive advantage. Next, the existing and potential applications possible for different spectral bands are summarized. Finally, conclusions and perspectives are given as the guidance for future research.
Spectral emittance measurements of micro/nanostructures in energy conversion: a review

Abstract:Micro/nanostructures play a key role in tuning the radiative properties of materials and have been applied to high-temperature energy conversion systems for improved performance. Among the various radiative properties, spectral emittance is of integral importance for the design and analysis of materials that function as radiative absorbers or emitters. This paper presents an overview of the spectral emittance measurement techniques using both the direct and indirect methods. Besides, several micro/nanostructures are also introduced, and a special emphasis is placed on the emissometers developed for characterizing engineered micro/nanostructures in high-temperature applications (e.g., solar energy conversion and thermophotovoltaic devices). In addition, both experimental facilities and measured results for different materials are summarized. Furthermore, future prospects in developing instrumentation and micro/nanostructured surfaces for practical applications are also outlined. This paper provides a comprehensive source of information for the application of micro/nanostructures in high-temperature energy conversion engineering.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel cascading solar photovoltaic system with concentrating spectrum splitting and reshaping for combined heat and power generation is proposed for the first time to break through the limitations of photovoltaic efficiency. Two spectral splitters divide the solar spectrum into three parts, and each part of the spectrum is used by photovoltaics, thermophotovoltaics, and heat exchange fluids according to the photon grade. In addition, the heat exchange fluid also recovers the waste heat of concentrating photovoltaic and thermophotovoltaic cells. Therefore, the system achieves solar energy cascade utilization and has high electrical and thermal efficiency simultaneously. The effect of the fluid flow rate, solar irradiance, and cutoff wavelength of the spectral splitter on the hybrid system is discussed. The results show that under the conditions of 1000 sunlight and outlet fluid temperature of 60 °C, the solar energy conversion rate and exergy efficiency of the hybrid system are 90.17% and 39.84%, which are 63.97 percentage points and 11.62 percentage points higher than those of the single photovoltaic system, respectively.

Abstract:The solar energy spectrum absorbed and converted by PV modules is mainly located in the high-frequency band (380-1200 nm), while the spectral energy in other bands that fail to generate electricity is converted to heat and dissipated into the environment, which leads to lower energy utilization efficiency. Spectral beam splitting cascade utilization is a potential technology to improve the efficiency of solar energy utilization. In this paper, a novel combined cooling, heating and power system with solar energy spectral beam splitting was developed according to matching the energy grade and the operating characteristics of refrigeration cycles. The theoretical investigation carried the parameters distribution of energy load and efficiency out. The solar spectrum is divided into the high-frequency spectrum for electric power generation and the low-frequency spectrum for thermal energy harvesting. The spectrum energy after removing electrical power generation is recovered for fluid heating. The part of thermal energy with high temperature is used to drive the ejector refrigeration system to obtain the cooling capacity. Hot water is derived from low temperature thermal energy. Through the effective conversion of energy and heat recovery, the novel system ensures the efficiency of solar energy utilization and realizes a high-efficiency combined supply of cooling, heating and electricity. The total energy utilization effi-ciency and the total converted generation efficiency of the novel system can reach 82.7 % and 44.9 %, respectively, which is a remarkable improvement from 30.7 % of the conventional single photovoltaic system. The research results provide inspiration for the efficient utilization of solar energy and facilitate the realization of more application scenarios.

Abstract:Renewable energy harvesting from the sun and outer space have aroused significant interest over the past decades due to their great potential in addressing the energy crisis. Furthermore, the harvested renewable energy has benefited another global challenge, water scarcity. Both solar steam generation and passive radiative cooling-enabled atmospheric water harvesting are promising technologies that produce freshwater in green and sustainable ways. Spectral control is extremely important to achieve high efficiency in the two complementary systems based on absorbing/emitting light in a specific wavelength range. For this reason, a broad variety of solar absorbers and IR emitters with great spectral selectivity have been developed. Although operating in different spectral regions, solar selective absorbers and IR selective emitters share similar design strategies. At this stage, it is urgent and necessary to review their progress and figure out their common optical characteristics. Herein, the fundamental mechanisms and recent progress in solar selective absorbers and IR selective emitters are summarized, and their applications in water production are reported. This review aims to identify the importance of selective absorbers/emitters and inspire more research works on selective absorbers/emitters through the summary of advances and the establishment of the connection between solar absorbers and IR emitters.

Abstract:Spectral beam splitting (SBS) hybrid PV/T system was a promising path for utilizing the full spectrum solar energy to cogenerate electricity and high-grade heat, with high conversion efficiency. To settle the balance between photoelectric and photothermal conversion performance for full spectrum solar energy utilization, the sunlight based on wavelength matching was divided into two or more parts at band-gap wavelength by a spectral beam splitter: sunlight with wavelength at and close to the band-gap of PV cell was directed to generate electricity, while the sunlight with rest wavelength was used for thermal output. SBS hybrid PV/T system can not only increase the overall efficiency, but can also decouple the photoelectric and photothermal conversion process in separated operation temperatures. The current state-of the-art review on the advancements of SBS hybrid PV/T system performed with the aid of nanofluids, nano-film and semitransparent PV cells was presented in this work, with emphasis on the latest developments during the last decade. Mechanisms of different SBS techniques, progress in system, thermodynamic and cost analyses of nanofluids, nano-film and semitransparent PV cell based SBS hybrid PV/T system were discussed in detail to give a comprehensive understanding of the nature of the full spectrum solar energy utilization and the factors impacting on the system efficiency. Though the cost increase can be offset by extra energy efficiency gain, the wavelength matching, optical losses and stability of SBS hybrid PV/T system needs to be solved for future industrial application.

Abstract:Renewable solar energy as a resource for carbon emissions reduction, its application and promotion are hindered by low energy utilization efficiency. Photovoltaic modules mainly convert solar energy into electricity only in the high-frequency spectrum band. In order to achieve a high coefficient of performance, a novel heat pump system with solar energy spectral beam splitting was developed by matching the energy grade and heat pump cycle operating conditions. This also addresses the issue that the conventional heat pump system cannot supply heat efficiently and stably in the cold region of North China. Theoretical investigations were carried out on the distribution of parameters of energy load and efficiency. Compared with conventional PV modules, solar energy utilization with spectral beam splitting, which divides solar energy into the low-frequency spectrum for thermal energy collection and the high-frequency range for power generation, ensures high power production efficiency and utilization efficiency by the cascade thermal and electric energy exploitation in the proposed novel heat pump system. Partial thermal energy is used to provide the hot water, and the rest is upgraded by an ejector-based heat pump system to meet the space heating requirements. Therefore, the novel heat pump system achieves the combined supply of space heating, hot water, and electricity with high solar energy utilization efficiency through active energy conversion and thermal energy recovery. The goal of creating a structure with zero electric power consumption appears promising. When compared to the typical single PV system's (30.7%) efficiency, the suggested system's overall energy usage efficiency (up to 81.7%) is noticeably higher. In extreme cold areas, the performance superiority of the novel system is more prominent.

Abstract:The efficiency of single-junction solar cells has a limitation due to the low energy of the solar spectrum and weak photon response in the high-energy region. The spectral mismatch loss is the main factor that limits the efficiency of solar cells. An effective way of reducing the spectral mismatch loss is using spectral conversion materials to convert photons in low response regions into photons in high response regions. Spectral conversion materials include up-conversion (UC), down-shifting (DS), and quantum cutting (QC) luminescent materials. In the UC process, multiple photons with energies lower than the handgap of the solar cell are converted into higher-energy photons. In the DS process, a high-energy photon is converted into a low-energy photon. In the QC process, a high-energy photon is converted into multiple low-energy photons. These spectrally converted photons can he efficiently used by solar cells, improving their energy conversion efficiency. Therefore, this study summarizes the spectral adaptation conditions of different types of solar cells, details the latest research progress of UC, DS, and QC luminescent materials and give a prospect of the future development direction of using spectral conversion materials to improve the efficiency of solar cells.

Abstract:The utilization of renewable energy is significantly important for the world because global energy consumption is increasing, while conventional energy sources are no longer sufficient to meet the energy demand, triggering energy crises. However, variation in solar radiation and wind speed caused by climate and weather conditions restricts the stable operation of renewable energy systems, therefore, causing the output to fluctuate. A hybrid renewable energy (HRE) system can be highly efficient by combining multiple renewable energy sources and is regarded as a promising solution to the above issue. In this review, a comprehensive summary and discussion of the uses of HRE in terms of space heating, cooling, hot water usage, power generation, hydrogen production, drying and multi-generation are conducted. Hybrid system configurations, specific devices, application procedures, and performance are reviewed. Moreover, the challenges and outlook for HRE utilization are discussed, including the following points: proper use of the local sources in view of disperse and regional distribution of renewable energy; development of hybrid storage subsystems for HRE to improve the stability of the energy supply; further optimization of the operation strategy and system size to minimize the cost in order to promote the application; and, clear identification of the supporting local policies of renewable energy, especially considering HRE. Furthermore, the research potential is described for HRE utilization integrating direct CO2 reduction.

Abstract:<p>With developments in material science and thermal engineering, radiative sky cooling has received renewed interest as it provides passive cooling energy during both day and night. Similarly, solar energy harvesting systems, such as <a class="topic-link" href="/topics/materials-science/photovoltaics">photovoltaics</a>, photovoltaic/thermal, and thermal collectors, have been used extensively to meet global energy demands. Integrating the individual systems into the combined solar energy–radiative cooling (SE–RC) system provides multifunctionality, increased operating time, and higher energy gains per unit area. From initial studies to the latest developments, this review has analyzed such integrated systems considering their module configurations, design techniques, applied materials, operating conditions, and performance results. Despite their impressive potential, these systems encounter challenges of low cooling power, stringent spectral requirements, and varying energy supply and demand. Recent progress made to address such challenges, potential solutions, and future research directions have also been discussed. Considering the global energy crisis and environmental issues, the cooling, heating, and electricity generated by SE–RC systems will be used in diverse applications like buildings and vehicles. Therefore, it is anticipated that this review will serve as a guide for integrating solar energy and radiative cooling, and will help identify patterns that are not evident from single studies so to further promote research in this domain.</p>

Abstract:The goal of current energy policy worldwide is to develop clean renewable energy capable of powering the world household and economy, now and in the future. Photovoltaics (PV) is an advanced technique that can directly convert clear and sustainable solar energy into electricity, which makes it a promising candidate for achieving this goal. Currently, PV devices fabricated from silicon (Si) wafers dominate the marketplace. Unfortunately, current silicon-based PV products are expensive and suffer poor efficiency when converting solar energy to electricity. The mismatch between the solar photon flux spectrum and the spectral response of Si solar cells is one of the main drawbacks greatly limiting the power energy efficiency of Si solar cell. In recent years, rare earth-activated luminescent materials, which are capable of converting lights of higher energy into near-infrared (NIR) photons of lower energy by means of downshifting (DS) and downconverting (DC), have been designed and systematically investigated with aim to minimize the charge thermalization of Si solar cell in the process of photoelectric conversion. In this review, we will survey recent progress in the development of such kinds of rare earth solar spectral converters for Si solar cells as well as rare earth-converted Si solar cells (REC-Si solar cells). In addition, future challenges of these rare earth solar spectral converters will be briefly discussed toward REC-Si solar cells.
Boosting Total Conversion Efficiency of Hybrid Photovoltaic–Thermal Via a Spectral Splitter/Absorber Based on Lossy Periodic Structured Media

Abstract:A spectral splitter plays a crucial role in the hybrid photovoltaic (PV)–thermal design for efficient solar energy harvesting. Herein, the lossy medium periodic structure of ITO/Si is utilized to construct a novel spectral splitter/absorber that selectively reflects the solar energy in PV band while absorbing the rest of solar energy. The as‐prepared spectral splitter/absorber demonstrates a weighted reflectance of 75.6% in the PV band, an absorptance of 83.1% in the photothermal (PT) band, as well as superior angular performance across a broad incident range of 0°–60°. The proposed hybrid photovoltaic–thermal (PVT) system assembled with the spectral splitter/absorber with 1100 nm long edge of the PV band enhances the total electrical efficiency to 26.5%, higher than that of the individual Si PV cell (19.1%), resulting from the precise modulation of solar spectrum via the splitter/absorber to realize efficient utilization of solar energy in different bands. The temperature of PV cells in a hybrid PVT system also declines by ≈25 °C compared with the single‐Si PV cell. The PV band can be easily shifted to match other narrow‐bandgap PV cells due to intrinsic properties of near‐zero k of both ITO and Si at near‐infrared wavelength range and the large difference in n between them.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is developing rapidly, the research on nanofluids is becoming more and more mature. Due to the excellent physical and spectral properties of nanofluids, their multifunctional applications require specialized studies to enhance the comprehensive performance of hybrid systems. In this paper, the research status of nanofluid-driven multifunctional systems in solar energy is reviewed systematically, including photovoltaic/thermal systems, lighting/heating systems, desalination-related hybrid systems, and thermal energy storage (TES)-related hybrid systems. It can be concluded that the selective absorption properties of nanofluids can be exploited to realize multifunctional applications in different bands of the solar spectrum, and the superior physical properties of nanofluids enable them to exhibit better performance than common fluids in hybrid systems. Extensive research is still needed to optimize the systems while improving the long-term stability of nanofluids so as to play a greater role in multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Passive cooling of buildings through radiative cooling (RC) is considered an effective method for reducing the energy consumption of air conditioning. In recent years, spectrum-selective RC materials (RCMs) have received extensive attention owing to their low solar absorptivity and high thermal emissivity in the atmospheric window. The energy-saving performance of RCMs is related to their own properties and local meteorological conditions, building type, building form, and energy use patterns. Although several studies have explored the performance of RCMs, most existing studies have considered a single building type and meteorological condition, and simple building forms that differ significantly from real buildings. Hence, the application analyses of RCMs to buildings are not sufficiently comprehensive. This study focused on the energy-saving potential of RCMs for building applications, and presented a systematic framework to analyze the energy-saving potential of RCMs under different conditions. DeST, which is embedded with a long-wave radiative heat transfer calculation module based on the equivalent sky temperature, was adopted as the simulation software. It can accurately calculate the radiative heat transfer in different wavelength bands, thus making the simulation results more accurate. Based on the calculation results of large-scale cases considering four major factors, namely climate, building type, construction year, and installation location of RCMs, the energy-saving performance of RCMs in different cases was analyzed, and the return on investment is performed, and more comprehensive suggestions were provided for applying RCMs in future buildings.

Abstract:The solar spectrum allocation of a spectral-splitting photovoltaic-thermochemical hybrid system is investigated. In the proposed photovoltaic-thermochemical hybrid system, the spectral band between 400 nm and the cutoff wavelength lambda(s) is allocated to photovoltaic cells for power generation, while the rest of the solar spectrum is used for the thermochemical reaction of methanol decomposition. The effect of spectral band allocation on the photovoltaic and thermochemical conversions is analyzed, and the optimal spectral split is determined for improving the overall solar energy conversion. The calculation shows that increasing the solar energy allocated to photovoltaic cells is conducive to the solar energy conversion. The experimental results show that when the cutoff wavelength lambda(s) increases to 850 nm, the net solar power of the system reaches 1006.0 W, and the solar-to-electricity efficiency is improved to 20.3% at the solar irradiance of 610 W/m(2). The research findings provide guidance for the splitting and allocation of the solar spectrum in a photovoltaic-thermochemical hybrid system.
Nighttime Radiative Cooling for Water Harvesting from Solar Panels

Abstract:Photovoltaics has played a significant and increasingly important role in renewable energy harvesting. However, it only works during the daytime when the sun is accessible. In this paper, we propose to extend the functionality of solar panels into the nighttime for water harvesting, using nighttime radiative cooling. We first determine the suitable temperature and humidity range for nighttime water harvesting using solar panels and elucidate the water harvesting potential from solar panels. We further show that, through emissivity engineering, both the water generation rate and the suitable temperature and humidity range can be significantly improved. As a case study, we show that the average weekly water generation for solar panels in Dubai can reach 261 mL/m2, sufficient for dust cleaning of solar panels. Moreover, it can be significantly enhanced up to 681 mL/m2 with further emissivity engineering. The collected water can also be used for other applications including agrophotovoltaic and evaporative cooling of solar panels during the day, and can be extended to other solar energy harvesting systems. Our results point to new avenues to explore the nighttime utilization of a wide range of existing sky-facing solar energy harvesting systems and highlight the opportunities to use both the sun and outer space in existing energy systems.
