Abstract:Rubidium pentaborate (RB5) crystals were grown using slow evaporation solution growth technique at room temperature. Structural parameters of the grown crystal were studied by single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction techniques. High-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) analysis revealed the presence of low-angle grain boundaries with low integrated intensity in the crystal. UV–Vis–NIR spectrum shown the cut-off wavelength lies in UV region at 250 nm and the crystal possesses wide transparency from UV-to-NIR region. The various functional groups in the crystal were confirmed by the absorption peaks at FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra. TG–DTA analysis showed the one-step weight loss between 70 °C and 575 °C due to the liberation of crystal water molecules. Vickers microhardness test exhibits the reverse indentation size effect (RISE) in the crystal and the work hardening coefficient was found to be 4.3. The emergence of green light from the powder crystal while irradiating by 1064 nm Nd-YAG laser confirmed the second harmonic generation (SHG). Z-scan study revealed the positive lensing effect and saturable absorption nature of the crystal, and the third nonlinear susceptibility (χ 3 ) value was also calculated as 5.089 × 10 –6 esu.
