Abstract:Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive loss of renal function defined as kidney damage that persists for 3 months or longer or an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of <60 mL/min per 1.73 square meters. [ 1 ] Studies indicate that chronic kidney disease will become the fifth leading cause of death worldwide in the next decade, and among the leading causes of this dramatic rise are its effects on the cardiovascular system. [ 2 ] It has been reported that cardiovascular mortality is 57% higher in people with a GFR of <60 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 and 63% higher in the presence of microalbuminuria, while the likelihood of having a myocardial infarction is 33% with a GFR of <60 mL/min per 1.73 m 2 and 48% with microalbuminuria.
