Construction of a sustainable design competency assessment system for fashion designers in China

Abstract:This paper introduces a framework aimed at assessing the sustainability of fashion designers, intending to evaluate their proficiency in sustainability and enhance higher education in design. To establish a system for assessing and evaluating sustainable design competence, we initiated interviews with both designers and fashion design students. Thourgh these interviews, the definition and scope of sustainable design competence were identified. Quantitative research was then conducted to validate the framework, involving the collection of online recruitment data from fashion firms and the extraction of assessment indicators through keyword frequency analysis. The AHP method was then applied to assign weights to these indicators, establishing a comprehensive assessment system. The reliability of this system was confirmed through students' self-evaluation questionnaires, with statistical analysis aligning the assessment method with their performance. The results highlighted the positive impact of higher design education on students' professional ethics and knowledge of sustainability. However, it also emphasized the need to improve students' proficiency in sustainable design practices and digital skills. Collaboration between educational institutions and businesses is suggested to enhance students' sustainable design skills through projects, supported by tailored teaching methods from educators to tackle challenges in sustainable practice.
