Abstract:The centroid and moment of inertia directly affect the dynamic characteristics of aircraft, and accurate mass characteristic measurements are crucial to adequately control aircraft attitude. This paper proposes a new measurement method for determining aircraft mass characteristics that can improve measurement precision when used in regard to pico-satellites. The measurement system is designed according to the principles of three-point measure and constant torque. The feasibility of the test method of this study for determining the mass characteristics is proved by using a dynamic simulation and an experimental analysis method. Through a number of standard workpiece tests, the deviation of the measurement system and effective compensation methods of the mass characteristics are obtained. The measurement system and compensation methods are applied to measure the mass characteristics of a pico-satellite, which can be detected by only one time clamping. The measurement system proposed herein can effectively improve measurement precision, as it was found that the accuracy of the centroid and the moment of inertia of the pico-satellite are less than 1 mm and 1.5 × 10−2 kgm2, respectively. The proposed measurement system also has many advantages, such as a simple operation, high efficiency, small volume, and low cost.

Abstract:The measurement of the moment of inertia for rigid body is an important experiment in college physics courses.The fitting line method within Origin 7.5 is introduced taking this experiment course as an example.In teaching process it is found that the students obtain the value of the moment of inertia for rigid body quickly.Thus we recommend teachers to deal with the experimental data in teaching by using the software.

Abstract:In the experiment of measuring the rigid body rotational inertia by falling body method,the influence of the non-perpendicularity between the rope and the rotational axis on the measurement accuracy was analyzed.The relation between the angular acceleration and the rotational speed was also measured and analyzed under resisting moment.The measurement and error analysis could be viewed as an extension and improvement of the original experiment,which was helpful to enlighten the experiment thinking and cultivate the creative consciousness of the students.

Abstract:A large system used for measuring inertia moment of missile with the mass ranged from 100 kg to 1 200 kg was developed.The measurement of missile's inertia moment relative to three axes was realized by an expandable measuring arm under only one-step installation having less the positioning errors than multi-step installations.The main factors affecting precision were also analyzed quantitatively.The inertia moment of standard body was measured,and the results show that the error is less than 0.1% in measuring inertia moment relative to every axis.

Abstract:A large measurement system of moment of inertia based on air-hovered turn-table is developed according to the theory of testing moment of inertia using torsion pendulum.A deployable measure arm is presented,which realizes the measurement of flight object's moment of inertia and product of inertia relative to three axes by using only one process of installation based on the theory of arbitrary axis,so the positioning errors as a result of repetitious installations are reduced effectively.With the introduction of air-hovered turn-table,the influence of friction force on the cycle of torsion pendulum in the process of swing is reduced.The experimental results show that the relative error is limited within 0.07% in measuring moment of inertia.The measuring efficiency is three times as large as the former due to using deployable measure arm.

Abstract:In order to satisfy the need for measuring the moment inertia of course dirction for large dimension aircrafts,a method for measuring the moment of inertia based on the composite torsion pendulum movement was put forward.The numerical solutions for differential equations and the pendulum curves were obtained when centroid departure and initial departure angle exist,which can serve as the theoretical basis for compensation of measurement errors.Analysis shows that this method for measuring the moment of inertia has certain engineering application value.

Abstract:Using the 3-URU parallel mechanism a new method of measuring all inertial properties is presented. After a rigid body is fixed on the mobile platform of the mechanism, the method can firstly measure its mass, and then its center of mass and inertia tensor. Its principle is based on the general nonlinear motion equation, and the angular velocity and acceleration of the measured rigid body required for the principle is obtained by using the forward kinematics of the parallel mechanism. The forward solution is derived according to the recorded joint angles, the adopted Newton-Raphson plus least square algorithm guarantees the stability of the solution of a highly nonlinear redundant equation set. Next, polynomial fitting of the pose (position and orientation) of the mobile platform is performed, and then the first and second derivatives are evaluated for the angular velocity, linear acceleration and angular acceleration. The presented technique only consists of three angle encoders and three tensile force sensors without any other inertial measurement units (such as gyro and acceleration sensors), which is economical. The measurement method is verified by measuring two different rigid bodies (symmetrical and asymmetrical), and satisfactory results have been obtained for both the measurement time and the measurement accuracy. The presented method is a passive method relying on the gravitational field, so it does not require any excitation device. It can be applied to automobile, aviation, aerospace and other industries. Abstract:<p>An error analysis method for the measured inertia parameters of an irregular-shaped rigid body using suspended Trifilar Torsional Pendulum (TTP) is presented. Model errors, parameters measurement errors and coordinate systems measured errors are three kinds of errors in inertia parameters measurement of a body, and the influence of these factors on measured inertia parameters are analyzed in this paper. The main factor influencing the measured error of center of gravity of the body is the measured pendulum axis. Initial angular displacement of TTP has great influence on the measured accuracy of the inertia tensor (moment of inertia and product of inertia). A method for reducing measurement errors of an assembly body is proposed. The inertia parameters of a powertrain consisting of an engine and a transmission are measured to validate the proposed procedures.</p>

Abstract:In order to measure the time-varying moment of inertia,the measurement model based on torsion pendulum is established and the calculation method of moment of inertia based on Hilbert transform is proposed.According to the principle of analytical dynamics,the differential equation of the torsion pendulum is presented using the second Lagrange equation.The analytic signal is calculated by the Hilbert transform of the angular displacement signal.The instantaneous undamped natural frequency is computed by the instantaneous angular frequency and the envelope signal.The time-varying moment of inertia is calculated by the instantaneous undamped natural frequency of the torsion pendulum.The torsion pendulum system based on air-turntable is used to measure the time-varying moment of inertia of the test object.With the introduction of the air-turntable,the influence of friction force can be reduced.The experimental result shows that the relative measurement error of the time-varying moment of inertia is less than 0.5%,which indicates the validity of the measurement method.

Abstract:A measurement model based on torsion pendulum was established, in which nonlinear damping and nonlinear restoring force were considered. The calculation method of the moment of inertia was based on Hilbert transform. The motion of torsion pendulum showed the time-frequency characteristics due to the nonlinear factors, which were validated by the experimental data. The analytical signal was formed by Hilbert transform of the angular displacement signal of the test object. The moment of inertia can be computed by the instantaneous undamped natural frequency with Hilbert transform. Prior to the implementation of Hilbert transform, the empirical mode decomposition was used to filter the experimental signal. The moment of inertia of the test object was measured by the torsion pendulum system. The experimental results show that the relative measurement error of the moment of inertia was within 0.7%, which indicated the validity of the measurement method.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to apply the compound pendulum method to measure the moment inertia of the projectile. The measurement process will be subject to frictional resistance,such as air resistance and shaft or blade support. Not only with the characteristics of the measured object itself,such as the size of the object,shape,etc.;the cross-sectional area and the length of the pendulum axis will also affect the size of air resistance. The frictional resistance of the shaft support is related to the size of the frictional resistance,the degree of smoothness and the quality of the measured object. In this paper,the theory of measuring the moment inertia is studied and analyzed. The air damping,frictional damping and coupling of the momentary inertia of the projectile are discussed. The precision of the measured moment inertia is improved,which provides certain theoretical basis.

Abstract:We propose a method for measuring the center of mass and moment of inertia of a model using 3D point clouds. First, we use point cloud registration and segmentation to obtain point clouds of model parts with different material densities. Then, we correct the point cloud coordinates by principal component analysis, and we perform 2.5D volume calculations in three directions. Finally, we input the material density for each model part, perform point cloud reconstruction, and calculate the center of mass and moment of inertia. In experiments, we measured the center of mass and moment of inertia simultaneously by using multiple time-of-flight cameras. The results demonstrated that the proposed method accurately measured the center of mass and moment of inertia with errors of <1m m and <3%, respectively. This is a promising approach for automatically measuring models of aircraft, cars, etc.

Abstract:A mathematical model,linear differential equation model,for measuring the moment of inertia of objects under damp conditions is introduced.By utilizing the air-floatation inertia measurement system,experimental validation of the linear model is carried out.The results show that air damping has a significant impact on measuring the moment of inertia of objects with large scale and complex shape.For the high-precision inertia measurement under damp conditions,the compensation affects of the previous linear model are limited and research on the new compensation method is needed.

Abstract:The analysis of trifilar pendulums is simplified by a method which simultaneously determines all 10 inertia parameters of a complex rigid body,namely the mass,the coordinates of the center of gravity,the moments of inertia and the products of inertia,without any angular measurements.The key improvements in the improved method include using a balancing weight to render an easy stance adjustment,measuring distances between a point to four predefined points to calculate the coordinates of that point,and calculating all the matrices for the coordinate transformation.Error indices are defined for the important parameters to evaluate the accuracy.Results for a vehicle powertrain are presented to exemplify the applicability and accuracy of the approach.

Abstract:In order to enhance the accuracy and the stability for measuring moment of inertia through the torsion pendulum method,it is demonstrated in principle the measuring position error can cause the period measurement error in the measurement of the period of torsion pendulum using the photoelectricity timing method,but the measurement error can not be reduced by multi-average.A method of real-time computing damping ratio using the ratio of adjacent area of period is presented,and the feasibility of this method is demonstrated by theoretical analysis.The experimental results show that the standard deviation of moment of inertia with the method introduced here decreases an order of magnitude than that with photoelectricity timing method.

Abstract:An improved approach is presented for using a trifilar pendulum to identify 10 inertia parameters of odd-shaped bodies. The parameters include the mass, the coordinates of the center of gravity, and the moments and products of inertia. Owing to carefully designed procedures of distance measurement and coordinate transform, no angular measurement is necessary for orientation description in the new approach. Balancing weights and load cells are introduced to facilitate the adjustments of the location and orientation of the body during tests. In order to evaluate the precision of the identified results, tentative error indices are suggested for the parameters, respectively. Two examples are given to demonstrate the new approach.

Abstract:Abstract To determine the mass-moment-of-inertia properties of devices under test with particularly small mass moments of inertia (some 10 −4 kg m 2 ), two measurement set-ups based on different measurement principles were developed. One set-up is based on a physical pendulum, the second set-up incorporates a torsion pendulum. Both measurement set-ups and their measurement principles are described in detail, including the chosen data acquisition and analysis. Measurement uncertainty estimations according to the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) were carried out for both set-ups by applying Monte Carlo simulations. Both set-ups were compared using the same three devices under test. For each measurement result, the measurement uncertainties were estimated. The measurement results are compared in terms of consistency and the resulting measurement uncertainties. For the given devices under test, the torsion pendulum set-up gave results with smaller measurement uncertainties compared to the set-up incorporating a physical pendulum.
