Abstract:Oral lichen planus (OLP) was an autoimmune disease of the oral mucosa mediated by T lymphocytes, with a prevalence of about 0.1% to 4.0%. [ 1 ] The most common characteristic of the clinical lesions was white reticular stripes distributed bilaterally and symmetrically, sometimes accompanied by mucosal hyperemia, erosion, and so on. The typical pathologic manifestations were lymphocytes band-like infiltration in the lamina propria and liquefaction denaturation of basal cells. [ 2 ] In 2005, OLP was classified by the WHO as an oral potentially malignant disorder, with a 1.4% probability of malignant transformation into oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). [ 3 , 4 ] OSCC, the most pernicious and harmful tumor in the head and neck region, accounted for up to 90% of oral malignant tumors. [ 5 ] Recent studies have shown that OSCC's 5-year survival rate was only approximately 60%. [ 6 ] Therefore, the first step in preventing the occurrence of the malignant transformation was to achieve an early diagnosis of OLP.
