Abstract:We reveal the cooperative effect of coherent and dissipative magnon-photon couplings in an open cavity magnonic system, which leads to nonreciprocity with a considerably large isolation ratio and flexible controllability. Furthermore, we discover unidirectional invisibility for microwave propagation, which appears at the zero-damping condition for hybrid magnon-photon modes. A simple model is developed to capture the generic physics of the interference between coherent and dissipative couplings, which accurately reproduces the observations over a broad range of parameters. This general scheme could inspire methods to achieve nonreciprocity in other systems.
Bistability of Cavity Magnon Polaritons

Abstract:We report the first observation of the magnon-polariton bistability in a cavity magnonics system consisting of cavity photons strongly interacting with the magnons in a small yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere. The bistable behaviors emerged as sharp frequency switchings of the cavity magnon polaritons (CMPs) and related to the transition between states with large and small numbers of polaritons. In our experiment, we align, respectively, the [100] and [110] crystallographic axes of the YIG sphere parallel to the static magnetic field and find very different bistable behaviors (e. g., clockwise and counter-clockwise hysteresis loops) in these two cases. The experimental results are well fitted and explained as being due to the Kerr nonlinearity with either a positive or negative coefficient. Moreover, when the magnetic field is tuned away from the anticrossing point of CMPs, we observe simultaneous bistability of both magnons and cavity photons by applying a drive field on the lower branch.

Abstract:Magnons serve as a testing ground for fundamental aspects of Hermitian and non-Hermitian wave mechanics and are of high relevance for information technology. This study presents setups for realizing spatio-temporally driven parity-time (PT) symmetric magnonics based on coupled magnetic waveguides and magnonic crystals. A charge current in a metal layer with strong spin-orbit coupling sandwiched between two insulating magnetic waveguides leads to gain or loss in the magnon amplitude depending on the directions of the magnetization and the charge currents. When gain in one waveguide is balanced by loss in the other waveguide a PT-symmetric system hosting non-Hermitian degeneracies (or exceptional points (EPs)) is realized. For AC current multiple EPs appear for a certain gain/loss strength and mark the boundaries between the preserved PT-symmetry and the broken PT-symmetry phases. The number of islands of broken PT-symmetry phases and their extensions is tunable by the frequency and the strength of the spacer current. At EP and beyond, the induced and amplified magnetization oscillations are strong and self-sustained. In particular, these magnetization auto-oscillations in broken PT-symmetry phase occur at low current densities and do not require further adjustments such as tilt angle between electric polarization and equilibrium magnetization direction in spin-torque oscillators, pointing to a new design of these oscillators and their utilization in computing and sensoric. It is also shown how the periodic gain/loss mechanism allows for the generation of high-frequency spin waves with low-frequency currents. For spatially-periodic gain/loss acting on a magnonic crystal, magnon modes approaching each other at the Brillouin-zone boundaries are highly susceptible to PT-symmetry, allowing for a wave-vector-resolved experimental realization at very low currents.

Nonreciprocal entanglement in cavity-magnon optomechanics

Abstract:Cavity optomechanics, a promising platform to investigate macroscopic quantum effects, has been widely used to study nonreciprocal entanglement with the Sagnac effect. Here, we propose an alternative way to realize nonreciprocal entanglement among magnons, photons, and phonons in a hybrid cavity-magnon optomechanics, where the magnon Kerr effect is used. We show that the Kerr effect gives rise to a magnon frequency shift and an additional two-magnon effect. Both of them can be tuned from positive to negative via tuning the magnetic field direction, leading to nonreciprocity. By tuning system parameters such as magnon frequency detuning or the coefficient of the two-magnon effect, bipartite and tripartite entanglements can be nonreciprocally enhanced. By further studying the defined bidirectional contrast ratio, we find that nonreciprocity in our system can be switched on and off, and can be engineered by the bath temperature. Our proposal not only provides a potential path to demonstrate nonreciprocal entanglement with the magnon Kerr effect, but also opens a direction to engineer and design diverse nonreciprocal devices in hybrid cavity-magnon optomechanics with nonlinear effects.

Abstract:Exceptional point (EP) associated with the parity-time (PT) symmetry breaking is receiving considerable recent attention by the broad physics community. By introducing balanced gain and loss, it has been realized in photonic, acoustic, and electronic structures. However, the observation of magnonic EP remains elusive. The major challenge is to experimentally generate the negative Gilbert damping, which was thought to be highly unlikely but is demanded by the PT symmetry. In this work, we study the magneto-optical interaction of circularly-polarized lasers with a submicron magnet placed in an optical cavity. We show that the off-resonant coupling between the driving laser and cavity photon in the far-blue detuning can induce the magnetic gain (or negative damping) exactly of the Gilbert type. A hyperbolic-tangent function ansatz is found to well describe the time-resolved spin switching as the intrinsic magnetization dissipation is overcome. When the optically pumped magnet interacts with a purely lossy one, we observe a phase transition from the imbalanced to passive PT symmetries by varying the detuning coeffcient. Our findings provide a feasible way to manipulate the sign of the magnetic damping parameter and to realize the EP in cavity optomagnonics.

Abstract:Here we propose a method of the excitation of perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) of different orders in an optomagnonic microcavity by ultrashort laser pulses. The microcavity is formed by a magnetic dielectric film surrounded by dielectric non-magnetic Bragg mirrors. Optical cavity modes in the magnetic layer provide concentration and strongly non-uniform distribution of the optical power over the layer thickness and therefore induce the effective field of the inverse Faraday effect also spatially non-uniform. It results in excitation of PSSWs. PSSWs whose wavevector is closest to the wavevector characterizing distribution of the inverse Faraday effect field are excited most efficiently. Consequently, a key advantage of this approach is a selectivity of the PSSW excitation which allows to launch PSSWs of required orders only. All-optical operation of the optomagnonic cavities opens new possibilities for their applications for quantum technologies.

Abstract:A nonreciprocal phonon laser in a spinning microwave magnomechanical system is proposed. The system consists of a spinning microwave resonator coupled with an yttrium iron garnet sphere. The Fizeau light-dragging effect caused by the spinning of the resonator leads to a significant difference in the mechanical gain and the threshold power for driving the resonator from the opposite directions, which results in a nonreciprocal phonon laser. The nonreciprocal phonon laser is highly tunable by the spinning speed and direction of the resonator. These results provide an experimentally feasible approach for exploring various nonreciprocal effects in cavity magnomechanical systems, and may find applications in photon, magnon, and phonon manipulations in manybody coupled systems.
Nonreciprocal Photon-Phonon Entanglement in Kerr-Modified Spinning Cavity Magnomechanics

Abstract:Cavity magnomechanics has shown great potential in studying macroscopic quantum effects, especially for quantum entanglement, which is a key resource for quantum information science. Here we propose to realize magnon mediated nonreciprocal photon-phonon entanglement, which exhibits asymmetry when opposite magnetic or driving fields are respectively applied to the magnons with the Kerr effect or the photons with the Sagnac effect. We find that the mean magnon number can selectively exhibit nonreciprocal linear or nonlinear (bistable) behavior with the strength of the strong driving field on the cavity. Assisted by this driving field, the magnon-phonon coupling is greatly enhanced, leading to the nonreciprocal photon-phonon entanglement via the swapping interaction between the magnons and photons. This nonreciprocal entanglement can be significantly enhanced with the magnon Kerr and Sagnac effects. Given the available parameters, the nonreciprocal photon-phonon entanglement can be preserved at $\sim3$ K, showing remarkable resilience against the bath temperature. The result reveals that our paper holds promise in developing various nonreciprocal devices with both the magnon Kerr and Sagnac effects in cavity magnomechanics.

Abstract:We propose an experimentally realizable nonreciprocal magnonic device at the single-magnon level by exploiting magnon blockade in a magnon-based hybrid system. The coherent qubit-magnon coupling, mediated by virtual photons in a microwave cavity, leads to the energy-level anharmonicity of the composite modes. In contrast, the corresponding dissipative counterpart, induced by traveling microwaves in a waveguide, yields inhomogeneous broadenings of the energy levels. As a result, the cooperative effects of these two kinds of interactions give rise to the emergence of the direction-dependent magnon blockade. We show that this can be demonstrated by studying the equal-time second-order correlation function of the magnon mode. Our study opens an avenue to engineer nonreciprocal magnonic devices in the quantum regime involving only a small number of magnons.
Enhanced Sideband Responses in a PT -Symmetric-like Cavity Magnomechanical System

Abstract:Based on the cavity magnomechanical system, which consists of a microwave cavity and a small ferromagnetic sphere, we propose a scheme to construct a parity-time- (PT-) symmetric-like system formed by the active magnon mode and passive cavity mode. The effective gain of the magnon mode is achieved by resonantly driving the yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere and can be modulated by the power of the driving field. We show the PT-symmetric phase transition following the variation of magnon-photon coupling strength in microwave regime. We find that the transmission amplitudes and time delays on the first- and second-order sidebands in the PT-symmetric-like system can be enhanced for three to four orders, compared to the magnomechanical system, once the magnon-photon coupling strength is tuned to the critical point in the broken-PT-symmetry regime. Particularly, we also show the switching between different transmission spectra (amplification or magnomechanically induced absorption) and time delay (positive or negative) on the first-order Stokes sideband can be achieved by modulating the power of the control field, cavity-waveguide coupling parameter, and magnon-photon coupling strength. Our study shows that the cavity magnomechanical system is a promising platform for exploring PT-symmetric-like paradigms in microwave field, and a good candidate for the microwave control on both the first- and high-order sidebands simultaneously. Our study may inspire further applications in frequency combs and low-power magnomechanical amplifier.
Parity-dependent Unidirectional and Chiral Photon Transfer in Reversed-Dissipation Cavity Optomechanics

Abstract:Nonreciprocal elements, such as isolators and circulators, play an important role in classical and quantum information processing. Recently, strong nonreciprocal effects have been experimentally demonstrated in cavity optomechanical systems. In these approaches, the bandwidth of the nonreciprocal photon transmission is limited by the mechanical resonator linewidth, which is arguably much smaller than the linewidths of the cavity modes in most electromechanical or optomechanical devices. In this work, we demonstrate broadband nonreciprocal photon transmission in the reversed-dissipation regime, where the mechanical mode with a large decay rate can be adiabatically eliminated while mediating anti-PT-symmetric dissipative coupling with two kinds of phase factors. Adjusting the relative phases allows the observation of periodic Riemann-sheet structures with distributed exceptional points (Eps). At the Eps, destructive quantum interference breaks both the T- and P-inversion symmetry, resulting in unidirectional and chiral photon transmissions. In the reversed-dissipation regime, the nonreciprocal bandwidth is no longer limited by the mechanical mode linewidth but is improved to the linewidth of the cavity resonance. Furthermore, we find that the direction of the unidirectional and chiral energy transfer could be reversed by changing the parity of the Eps. Extending non-Hermitian couplings to a three-cavity model, the broken anti-PT-symmetry allows us to observe high-order Eps, at which a parity-dependent chiral circulator is demonstrated. The driving-phase controlled periodical Riemann sheets allow observation of the parity-dependent unidirectional and chiral energy transfer and thus provide a useful cell for building up nonreciprocal array and realizing topological, e.g., isolators, circulators, or amplifiers.

Abstract:We propose a theoretical scheme for the generation of nonreciprocal microwave-optical entanglement in a magnon-based hybrid system where an optical photon in a spinning resonator is coupled to a phonon representing the quantum of the mechanical deformation of a yttrium iron garnet crystal via radiation pressure. Meanwhile, the magnon interacts with the phonon and the microwave through the magnetostrictive and magnetic dipole–dipole interactions, respectively. By spinning the resonator, the light driven in opposite directions propagates irreversibly, which leads to the classical nonreciprocity of mean optical photon numbers. Strikingly, the nonreciprocal entanglement between microwave and optical photons can be generated owing to the Fizeau light-dragging effect. Physically, the magnon–phonon entanglement induced by the magnomechanical parametric downconversion interaction is partially transferred to the microwave-optical subsystem through magnon-microwave and optomechanical state-exchange interactions. Moreover, the nonreciprocity of entanglement can be manipulated by properly choosing various system parameters and the ideal nonreciprocal microwave–optical entanglement could be achieved, in which the entanglement depending on the effective optical detuning is present in a chosen direction but disappears in the other direction. Our work could be applied in the multi-task quantum information processing and construction of chiral quantum networks.

Cavity-Enhanced Optical Manipulation of Antiferromagnetic Magnon-Pairs

Abstract:The optical manipulation of magnon states in antiferromagnets (AFMs) holds significant potential for advancing AFM-based computing devices. In particular, two-magnon Raman scattering processes are known to generate entangled magnon-pairs with opposite momenta. We propose to harness the dynamical backaction of a driven optical cavity coupled to these processes, to obtain steady states of squeezed magnon-pairs, represented by squeezed Perelomov coherent states. The system's dynamics can be controlled by the strength and detuning of the optical drive and by the cavity losses. In the limit of a fast (or lossy) cavity, we obtain an effective equation of motion in the Perelomov representation, in terms of a light-induced frequency shift and a collective induced dissipation which sign can be controlled by the detuning of the drive. In the red-detuned regime, a critical power threshold defines a region where magnon-pair operators exhibit squeezing, a resource for quantum information, marked by distinct attractor points. Beyond this threshold, the system evolves to limit cycles of magnon-pairs. In contrast, for resonant and blue detuning regimes, the magnon-pair dynamics exhibit limit cycles and chaotic phases, respectively, for low and high pump powers. Observing strongly squeezed states, auto-oscillating limit cycles, and chaos in this platform presents promising opportunities for future quantum information processing, communication developments, and materials studies.

Abstract:Cavity magnonics provides a versatile platform to tune the photon-magnon interaction bringing about promising applications for quantum information processing. Here, we implement a metamaterial planar cavity to suppress the radiative damping by engineering the symmetry of the cavity configuration. Then, the mode with suppressed radiative damping, i.e., dark mode, is coupled to the magnon mode in a thin yttrium iron garnet film (5 mu m), which is detected by performing the reflection measurements and spinpumping experiment. Pronounced anticrossing of the ferromagnetic resonance and the cavity dark mode is observed, where the largest coupling strength reaches 2.5% of the resonant cavity frequency. In addition, the spin wave resonances along the thickness direction are identified, which enhances the spin-pumping signal when they coalesce with the hybridized cavity-magnon-polariton mode. The dark mode excited by the planar metamaterial cavity leads to an improvement in the coherent manipulation of the spin current.
Highly-tunable and strong nonreciprocity in coupled nonlinear cavity magnonics

Abstract:Nonreciprocity, which violates Lorentz reciprocity, plays a pivotal role in quantum information processing and networks. Nevertheless, achieving a desired and highly-tunable level of nonreciprocity has proven to be a formidable challenge. Here, we propose a coupled nonlinear cavity magnonic system, consisting of two cavities, a second-order nonlinear element, and a yttrium-iron-garnet sphere for supporting Kerr magnons, to realize this sought-after highly-tunable nonreciprocity. We first derive the critical condition for switching between reciprocity and nonreciprocity with undriven magnons, then we numerically demonstrate that a strong magnonic nonreciprocity can be obtained by breaking the critical condition. When magnons are driven, we show that a strong magnonic nonreciprocity can also be attained within the critical condition. Compared to previous study, the introduced nonlinear element not only relaxes the critical condition to both the weak and strong regimes, but also offers an alternative path to adjust the magnonic nonreciprocity. Our work provides a promising avenue to realize highly-tunable nonreciprocal devices with Kerr magnons.

Magnon spin photogalvanic effect induced by Aharonov-Casher phase

Abstract:Magnons are electrically neutral bosonic quasiparticles emerging as collective spin excitations of magnetically ordered materials, and play a central role in the next-generation spintronics owing to its obviating Joule heating. A difficult obstacle for quantum magnonics is that the magnons do not couple to the external electric field directly so that a direct electric manipulation via bias or gate voltage as in conventional charge-based devices seems not applicable. In this work, we propose a new mechanism in which magnons can be excited and controlled by electric field of light directly. Since the electric field of light can be tuned in a wide and easy way, the proposal is of great interest in realistic applications. We call it as the magnon spin photogalvanic effect (SPGE), which comes from five contributions: the Drude, Berry curvature dipole (BCD), injection, shift, and rectification, with distinct geometric origins. We further show that the responses to linearly-polarized or circularly-polarized light are determined by band-resolved quantum metric or Berry curvature, the two combined together just comprise of a quantum geometric tensor. The proposed magnon SPGE can be measured by a characterized topological phase transition. We also discuss a breathing kagome-lattice model of ferromagnets and suggest possible candidate materials to implement it.

Critical Cavity-Magnon Polariton Mediated Strong Long-Distance Spin-Spin Coupling

Abstract: Strong long-distance spin-spin coupling is desperately demanded for solid-state quantum information processing, but it is still challenged. Here, we propose a hybrid quantum system, consisting of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator weakly coupled to a single nitrogen-vacancy spin in diamond and a yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) nanosphere holding Kerr magnons, to realize strong long-distance spin-spin coupling. With a strong driving field on magnons, the Kerr effect can squeeze magnons, and thus exponentially enhance the coupling between the CPW resonator and the sequeezed magnons, which produces two cavity-magnon polaritons, i.e., the high-frequency polariton (HP) and low-frequency polariton (LP). When the enhanced cavity-magnon coupling approaches to the critical value, the spin is fully decoupled from the HP, while the coupling between the spin and the LP is significantly improved. In the dispersive regime, a strong spin-spin coupling is achieved with accessible parameters, and the coupling distance can be up to $\sim$cm. Our proposal provides a promising way to manipulate remote solid spins and perform quantum information processing in weakly coupled hybrid systems.
Nonreciprocal entanglement in cavity magnomechanics exploiting chiral cavity-magnon coupling

Abstract:We show how to achieve nonreciprocal quantum entanglement in a cavity magnomechanical system by exploiting the chiral cavity-magnon coupling. The system consists of a magnon mode, a mechanical vibration mode, and two degenerate counter-propagating microwave cavity modes in a torus-shaped cavity. We show that nonreciprocal stationary microwave-magnon and -phonon bipartite entanglements and photon-magnon-phonon tripartite entanglement can be achieved by respectively driving different circulating cavity modes that hold a chiral coupling to the magnon mode. The nonreciprocal entanglements are shown to be robust against various experimental imperfections. We specifically show how such nonreciprocal entanglement can realize the channel multiplexing quantum teleportation. The work may find promising applications of the cavity magnomechanical systems in noise-tolerant quantum processing, channel multiplexing quantum teleportation, and chiral magnonic quantum networks.

Abstract:By engineering an anti-parity-time (anti-PT) symmetric cavity magnonics system with precise eigenspace controllability, we observe two different singularities in the same system. One type of singularity, the exceptional point (EP), is produced by tuning the magnon damping. Between two EPs, the maximal coherent superposition of photon and magnon states is robustly sustained by the preserved anti-PT symmetry. The other type of singularity, arising from the dissipative coupling of two antiresonances, is an unconventional bound state in the continuum (BIC). At the settings of BICs, the coupled system exhibits infinite discontinuities in the group delay. We find that both singularities coexist at the equator of the Bloch sphere, which reveals a unique hybrid state that simultaneously exhibits the maximal coherent superposition and slow light capability.
