Abstract:Several innovative technologies, like parcel lockers, arise to improve the efficiency of last mile delivery service in urban areas, which has a growing impact on the satisfaction of consumers during their purchase journeys. Understanding consumers' preferences and perceptions is essential for the success of technology promotion. As a promising solution, parcel lockers can be divided into two patterns, including stationary parcel locker (SPL) which is already practiced and mobile parcel locker (MPL) which may be introduced soon. This study aims to understand the consumers' choice between SPLs and MPLs using a context-dependent stated choice experiment. The effects of socio-demographic attributes, service attributes, and contextual attributes are explored. Results indicate that access distance is of utmost importance for both SPLs and MPLs. Consumers in general prefer to use SPLs and dislike the short dwell time of MPLs at temporary locations. More people wish to be notified by messages rather than phone calls. Compared with people aged 50 & above, the younger are more willing to experience the MPL service. Additionally, consumers are more inclined to use SPLs when they are ready to collect time-sensitive parcels on rainy weekdays. This study helps decision-makers to capture the positioning of MPLs from the perspective of consumers at the launching stage, which is suggested be a complementary technical service to stationary counterparts.
