Abstract:A novel sheet-like tin-based metal-organic framework exhibited a specific capacity for lithium storage as high as 1033.3 mAh g-1 at 200 mA g-1 with excellent cycling stability. This framework, due to its unique porous structure and multiple lithium storage sites, could better cope with challenges occurring during lithium insertion/extraction than could traditional tin materials.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted great attention for energy storage and conversion applications due to their highly porous structure and tunable chemical composition that can be designed at the molecular level. Accordingly, it becomes highly urgent to develop novel strategies for fabricating MOFs or MOF-derived functional materials. Utilizing the self-assembly of Fe-based MOFs, [Fe(MeIm)(2)](n) (MeIm = 2-methylimidazolate) on N-doped carbon nanowebs (NCWs), a well-defined 3D hierarchical architecture with ultrasmall Fe3O4 nanodots embedded within an N-doped carbon (NC) framework is obtained in this work. Remarkably, this self-assembly process is also applicable to other types of MOFs, such as [Co(MeIm)(2)](n) and ([Ni(MeIm)(2)](n)), and other types of carbon substrates, such as 1D carbon nanotubes and 2D graphene. Benefiting from the unique structural advantages of the materials prepared through such a MOF-engaged method, the as-prepared 3D structured NCW@Fe3O4/NC composite exhibits outstanding reversible capacity, excellent rate behavior (723 mA h g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)), and good cycling performance (1741 mA h g(-1) after 600 cycles at 1000 mA g(-1)) as the anode material of Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising electrode materials due to their high controllability and regular pore structure. Nevertheless, limited by the low ionic conductivity of organic frameworks and the huge volume change caused by the conversion reaction of metal ions with Li+, their long-term stability and rate performance are not satisfactory. In this paper, a regular micron rod-shaped nickel, iron and manganese benzene-1,2,4,5-tetracarboxylate trimetallic organic framework (NiFeMn-pma) was synthesized by a one-pot method. It belongs to monoclinic symmetry and P2 1 /n space group, in which metal ions are coordinated with different oxygen atoms on the carboxyl group of pyromellitic acid to form a three-dimensional structure. Remarkably, thanks to the change of the lithium storage form from a conversion reaction to an intercalation reaction based on a carboxyl group and a benzene ring, NiFeMn-pma exhibits a high capacity of 802.1 mAh g-1 and excellent cycle stability (624 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 over 100 cycles) as an anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs). Compared with single metal MOF (Ni-pma) and bimetal MOF (NiFe-pma), tri-metal MOF (NiFeMn-pma) exhibits enhanced rate performance, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of multi-metal mixing sites. Meanwhile, the surface of NiFeMn-pma electrode is porous after 100 cycles, which can significantly improve the penetration of electrolyte and promote the migration of lithium ions. The research paved the way for the potential application of MOF materials in lithium-ion batteries.

Hollow Multi‐Shelled Structure with Metal–Organic‐Framework‐Derived Coatings for Enhanced Lithium Storage

Abstract:Herein, we present heterogeneous hollow multi-shelled structures (HoMSs) prepared by exploiting the properties of the metal-organic framework (MOFs) casing. Through accurately controlling the transformation of MOF layer into different heterogeneous casings, we can precisely design HoMSs of SnO2 @Fe2 O3 (MOF) and SnO2 @FeOx -C(MOF), which not only retain properties of the original SnO2 -HoMSs, but also structural information from the MOFs. Tested as anode materials in LIBs, SnO2 @Fe2 O3 (MOF)-HoMSs demonstrate superior lithium-storage capacity and cycling stability to the original SnO2 -HoMSs, which can be attributed to the topological features from the MOF casing. Making a sharp contrast to the electrodes of SnO2 @Fe2 O3 (particle)-HoMSs fabricated by hydrothermal method, the capacity retention after 100 cycles for the SnO2 @Fe2 O3 (MOF)-HoMSs is about eight times higher than that of the SnO2 @Fe2 O3 (particle)-HoMS.
Metal–Organic Framework-Structured Porous ZnCo 2 O 4 /C Composite Nanofibers for High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In this work, metal–organic framework (MOF)-structured porous ZnCo2O4/C composite nanofibers are prepared by electrospinning, followed by in situ growth and annealing. The ZnCo2O4/C nanofibers exhibit features such as robust pores, high specific surface area (148.7 m2·g–1), and nanofiber structure, enabling excellent capacity performance, cycle stability, and rate capabilities as anode in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Briefly, specific discharge capacities of 1707 and 1145 mAh·g–1 are delivered for initial and after 100 cycles, respectively, and even restraining a specific capacity of 701 mAh·g–1 at 1.0 A·g–1. The excellent electrochemical properties of MOFs-ZnCo2O4/C composite nanofibers are mainly attributed to the following reasons: (i) the abundant channels for lithium-ion intercalation/de-intercalation offered by the MOF structure; (ii) the alleviated volume expansion during the charge/discharge process owing to the intrinsic stability of the one-dimensional (1D) fiber; and (iii) the carbon fiber with excellent conductivity enables efficient conduction efficiency of lithium ions and electrons. Capacity fading is significantly improved, and the proposed strategy offers a perspective to improve electrochemical performance in energy storage.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of novel material architectures via versatile strategy become one of the most fascinating research topics due to their fantastic properties. Specifically, the popular metal-organic-framework provides a rational strategy to overcome intrinsic limitations of existing synthetic methods for nanostructures. Herein, an intriguing kind of hollow In2O3/C porous hexagonal nanorods is presented for the application in lithium ion battery anodes, by a controlled one-step annealing process. The structural advantages of these materials are that the one-dimensional hollow porous nanorod structures can provide decreased lithium ions diffusion and electron transport lengths, more favorable pathways for efficient penetration of electrolyte, the numerous mesopores that could act as reservoirs for storing Li+, and also the ability to release the large volume expansion during charge/discharge. Additionally, carbon coating formed in situ can minimize the volume changes of In2O3, and act as an efficient electrical conducting pathway. This proposed anode delivers outstanding Li-storage capacity of 1078 mA h g(-1) and rate capability even to the current density of 2000 mA g(-1). The outstanding long-term stability (425 mA h g(-1) after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g(-1)) further demonstrates its prominent properties.
Metal-Organic Framework Derived Porous Hollow Co3O4/N-C Polyhedron Composite with Excellent Energy Storage Capability

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived transition metal oxides exhibit enhanced performance in energy conversion and storage. In this work, porous hollow Co3O4 with N-doped carbon coating (Co3O4/N-C) polyhedrons have been prepared using cobalt-based MOFs as a sacrificial template. Assembled from tiny nanoparticles and N-doped carbon coating, Co3O4/N-C composite shortens the diffusion length of Li+/Na+ ions and possesses an enhanced conductivity. And the porous and hollow structure is also beneficial for tolerating volume changes in the galvanostatic discharge/charge cycles as lithium/sodium battery anode materials. As a result, it can exhibit impressive cycling and rating performance. At 1000 mA g-1, the specific capacities maintaine stable values of ∼620 mAh g-1 within 2000 cycles as anodes in lithium ion battery, while the specific capacity keeps at 229 mAh g-1 within 150 cycles as sodium ion battery anode. Our work shows comparable cycling performance in lithium ion battery but even better high-rate cycling stability as sodium ion battery anode. Herein, we provide a facile method to construct high electrochemical performance oxide/N-C composite electrode using new MOFs as sacrificial template.
3D Covalent Polyoxovanadate‐Organic Framework as Anode for High‐Performance Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:A 3D well‐defined covalent polyoxovanadate–organic framework (POF‐1) is successfully synthesized by a green hydrothermal method with (NH4)2[VIV3VV3O10{NH2C(CH2O)3}3] (tris‐V6O19) as nodes and 1,4‐bi(3‐dimethylamino‐1‐oxoprop‐2‐enyl)benzene as linkers. POF‐1 achieves the complete utilization of the active sites, and exhibits exceptional performance as anodes for lithium‐ion batteries and sodium ion batteries. Polyoxometalates (POMs), as a unique class well‐defined metal‐oxo clusters with excellent multielectron redox properties, have attracted extensive attention in the field of energy storage and conversion, but it is still challenging to achieve their highly uniform and stable monodispersed. In this study, for the first time, polyoxovanadate (POV) is used, (NH4)2[VIV3VV3O10{NH2C(CH2O)3}3] (tris‐V6O19), as nodes and successfully obtain a 3D covalent polyoxovanadate‐organic framework through a green hydrothermal synthesis method, termed POF‐1. Total scattering atomic pair distribution function analysis confirms that POF‐1 has a noninterpenetrated diamond‐like framework, fully exposing the monodispersed tris‐V6O19, effectively utilizing the active components of VIV/VV and enhancing surface mass transfer. Notably, POF‐1 demonstrates exceptional performance in lithium‐ion batteries, achieving a high reversible capacity of 887.4 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1 and retaining over 92% capacity at 1 C during 1000 cycles. Electrochemistry mechanism and density functional theory calculations reveal that V centers in tris‐V6O19 and carbonyls (C═O) in BDOEB linkers are the main active sites, with each POF‐1 fragment capable of storing up to 14 Li+. This study opens a new pathway for the efficient and green synthesis of new 3D well‐defined POM‐organic frameworks, and shows great application prospect in the field of energy storage.

Abstract:A simple method to prepare metal-organic framework (MOF) nanotubes is developed by employing polyoxometalates (POMs) as modulators. The local structure of the MOF nanotubes is investigated combining XANES and EXAFS studies. These nanotubes show both an excellent catalytic performance in the detoxification of sulfur compounds in O2 atmosphere and a remarkable cycling stability as the anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Aiming to achieve metal-oxide-based electrodes for Li-ion batteries with enhanced energy density and cycling life, especially overcoming their negative volume expansion during cycling, more effort should be devoted to the exploration of the combination of morphology-controlled metal oxides with carbonaceous materials. In this work, we select dual/single-metallic organic frameworks immobilized on the surface of carbon nanotubes as the precursors to synthesize composites of ternary/single metal oxides with carbon nanotubes (ZnCo2O4@CNTs and ZnO@CNTs). The main product, ZnCo2O4@CNTs, consists of ultrafine ZnCo2O4 nanoparticles embedded deeply in the carbon nanotubes. The existence of small-size ternary metal oxides as well as the carbon nanotubes results in outstanding lithium-storage properties of the ZnCo2O4@CNT anode for lithium-ion batteries. It delivers an extremely high capacity (1507 mA h g(-1), 100 mA g(-1)) after 200 cycles, which is larger than the theoretical value.

Abstract:Two novel isostructural polyoxometalate (POM)-based metalorganic frameworks (MOFs) with diamond topology, NENU-506 and NENU-507, were hydrothermally synthesized. They not only combine the advantages of both POMs and MOFs, but also show excellent chemical and thermal stability. Notably, NENU-507 exhibited a high reversible capacity of 640 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles when applied as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COF) or metal–organic frameworks have attracted significant attention for various applications due to their intriguing tunable micro/mesopores and composition/functionality control. Herein, a coordination‐induced interlinked hybrid of imine‐based covalent organic frameworks and Mn‐based metal–organic frameworks (COF/Mn‐MOF) based on the MnN bond is reported. The effective molecular‐level coordination‐induced compositing of COF and MOF endows the hybrid with unique flower‐like microsphere morphology and superior lithium‐storage performances that originate from activated Mn centers and the aromatic benzene ring. In addition, hollow or core–shell MnS trapped in N and S codoped carbon (MnS@NS‐C‐g and MnS@NS‐C‐l) are also derived from the COF/Mn‐MOF hybrid and they exhibit good lithium‐storage properties. The design strategy of COF–MOF hybrid can shed light on the promising hybridization on porous organic framework composites with molecular‐level structural adjustment, nano/microsized morphology design, and property optimization.

Covalent Organic Framework Enhanced Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:High ionic conductivity, outstanding mechanical stability, and a wide electrochemical window are the keys to the application of solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Due to their regular channels for ion transport and tailored functional groups, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been applied to solid electrolytes to improve their performance. Herein, we report a flexible polyethylene oxide-COF-LZU1 (abbreviated as PEO-COF) electrolyte membrane with a high lithium ion transference number and satisfactory mechanical strength, allowing for dendrite-free and long-time cycling for LMBs. Benefiting from the interaction between bis(triflfluoromethanesulonyl)imide anions (TFSI-) and aldehyde groups in COF-LZU1, the Li+ transference number of the PEO-5% COF-LZU1 electrolyte reached up to 0.43, much higher than that of neat PEO electrolyte (0.18). Orderly channels are conducive to the homogenous Li-+ deposition, thereby inhibiting the lithium dendrites. The assembled LiFePO4|PEO-5% COF-LZU1/Li cells delivered a discharge specific capacity of 146 mAh g-1 and displayed a capacity retention of 80% after 200 cycles at 0.1 C (60 °C). The Li/Li symmetrical cells of the PEO-5% COF-LZU1 electrolyte presented a longer working stability at different current densities compared to that of the PEO electrolyte. Therefore, the enhanced comprehensive performance of the solid electrolyte shows potential application prospects for use in LMBs.
In-situ fabrication of carbon-metal fabrics as freestanding electrodes for high-performance flexible energy storage devices

Abstract:Hierarchical 1D carbon structures are attractive due to their mechanical, chemical and electrochemical properties however the synthesis of these materials can be costly and complicated. Here, through the combination of inexpensive acetylacetonate salts of Ni, Co and Fe with a solution of polyacrylonitrile (PAN), self-assembling carbon-metal fabrics (CMFs) containing unique 1D hierarchical structures can be created via easy and low-cost heat treatment without the need for costly catalyst deposition nor a dangerous hydrocarbon atmosphere. Microscopic and spectroscopic measurements show that the CMFs form through the decomposition and exsolution of metal nanoparticle domains which then catalyze the formation of carbon nanotubes through the decomposition by-products of the PAN. These weakly bound nanoparticles form structures similar to trichomes found in plants, with a combination of base-growth, tip-growth and peapod-like structures, where the metal domain exhibits a core(graphitic)-shell(disorder) carbon coating where the thickness is in-line with the metal-carbon binding energy. These CMFs were used as a cathode in a flexible zinc-air battery which exhibited superior performance to pure electrospun carbon fibers, with their metallic nanoparticle domains acting as bifunctional catalysts. This work therefore unlocks a potentially new category of composite metal-carbon fiber based structures for energy storage applications and beyond.

In this work, we developed a flexible, wavy layered nickel-based MOF (C20H24Cl2N8Ni, designated as Ni–Me4bpz) by a solvothermal approach of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl-4,4′-bipyrazole (H2Me4bpz) with nickel(II) chloride hexahydrate. The obtained MOF materials (Ni–Me4bpz) with metal azolate coordination mode provide 2-dimensional layered structure for Li+ intercalation/extraction, and the H2Me4bpz ligands allow for flexible rotation feature and structural stability. Lithium-ion battery anodes made of the Ni–Me4bpz material demonstrate excellent specific capacity and cycling performance, and the crystal structure is well preserved after the electrochemical tests, suggesting the potential of developing flexible layered MOFs for efficient and stable electrochemical storage.
Adsorption-Assisted Redox Center in Porous Organic Frameworks for Boosting Lithium Storage.

Abstract:Due to the designable structure and capacity, organic materials are promising candidates for lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we report a novel type of porous organic frameworks (POFs) based on the coupling reaction of diazonium salt as the anodes for lithium ion storage. The active center containing an azo group and the adjacent lithium-philic adsorption site is constructed to investigate the electrochemical behaviors and reaction mechanism. As synthesized POF material (named as POF-AN) exhibits high reversible lithium storage capacities of 523 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1 and 445 mAh g-1 at 2.0 A g-1 after 1500 cycles, showing excellent cycle stability and rate performance. The detailed characterizations reveal that the azo group can act as an electrochemical active site that reversibly bonds with Li-ions, and the adjacent oxygen atoms can electrostatically adsorb with Li-ions to promote the lithium storage reaction. This adsorption-assisted three-atom redox center is beneficial to synergistically enhance the adsorption and intercalation of lithium ions, which can further improve the capacity and cycle stability. By replacing the precursor, it is also facile to synthesize more similar structure types. The reversible redox chemistry of the adsorption-assisted three-atom active center provides new opportunities for the development of long lifespan and high-rate organic anodes.
