Abstract:The negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy center (NV) presents remarkable spin-dependent optical properties that make it an interesting tool for magnetic field sensing. In this paper we exploit the polarization properties of the NV center absorption and emission processes to improve the magnetic sensitivity of an ensemble of NV centers. By simply equipping the experimental set-up of a half-wave plate in the excitation path and a polarizer in the detection path we demonstrate an improvement larger than a factor of two on the NV center magnetic sensitivity.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper discusses how to enhance the magnetic sensitivity by adjusting the polarization excitation and detection of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers. NV centers are defect centers in diamond with unique optical properties, commonly used in magnetic sensing applications. In the study, the authors demonstrate a method to increase the magnetic sensitivity of NV centers by more than double, through the addition of a half-wave plate in the excitation path and the placement of a polarizer in the detection path. The paper points out that the magnetic sensitivity of NV centers is related to the polarization properties of their absorption and emission processes. By controlling these properties, the contrast and sensitivity of specific families of NV centers can be optimized, reducing background photoluminescence generated by non-participating NV centers and improving the signal-to-noise ratio of magnetic measurements. The experimental results validate the effectiveness of this method, which is significant for achieving high-sensitivity magnetic measurements and vector magnetometer applications.
