Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the clinical features of recurrent Kawasaki disease (KD) and the relationship of recurrent KD with coronary artery lesions.METHODS:The medical data of 20 children with recurrent KD who were admitted to the Children's Hospital from January 1998 to May 2007 were retrospectively studied. Their clinical features were compared with those of children with initial KD.RESULTS:The incidence of recurrent KD was 1.34% (20/1489). KD relapsed 2 months to 4.6 years (average: 1.2 years) after the first episode in the 20 children. Compared with the initial KD group, the clinical symptoms in the recurrent KD group were incomplete, complicated and less severe. The period of fever, platelet count, C-reactive protein and ESR were remarkably reduced in the recurrent KD group, but the incidence of coronary artery lesions increased significantly compared with the initial KD group (40% vs 25%; P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:The clinical symptoms of recurrent KD were incomplete in children. Recurrent KD was associated with an increased incidence of coronary artery lesions.

Abstract:Aim: Coronary artery lesion (CAL) is a common yet serious complication in children with Kawasaki disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influencing factors of CAL in children with Kawasaki disease, to provide reference for the clinical treatment and care of children with Kawasaki disease. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Methods: Children with Kawasaki disease treated in a tertiary hospital in China between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2022 were selected. The characteristics and clinical data of children with Kawasaki disease were analyzed. Spearman's correlation analysis was conducted to evaluate the relationship between CAL and the characteristics of children with Kawasaki disease. A logistic regression analysis was used to analyze the influencing factors of CAL in children with Kawasaki disease. Results: In total, 185 children with Kawasaki disease were included; the incidence of CAL in children with Kawasaki disease was 18.38%. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that gender ( r = 0.504), age ( r = 0.611), duration of fever ≥10 days ( r = 0.579), hemoglobin (Hb) ( r = 0.623), and C-reactive protein (CRP) ( r = 0.558) were all correlated with the CAL in children with Kawasaki disease (all p < 0.05). Logistic regression analyses showed that male [odds ratio (OR) = 2.543, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.801–3.077, p = 0.040], age ≤2 years (OR = 3.002, 95% CI: 2.744–3.641, p = 0.012), duration of fever ≥10 days (OR = 2.089, 95% CI: 1.624–2.515, p = 0.028), Hb ≤105 g/L (OR = 1.914, 95% CI: 1.431–2.406, p = 0.013), and CRP ≥100 mg/L (OR = 2.168, 95% CI: 1.893–2.531, p = 0.035) were the risk factors of CAL in children with Kawasaki disease (all p < 0.05). Conclusions: The incidence of CAL in children with Kawasaki disease is high and there are many related risk factors. Clinical medical workers should take early warning and carry out interventions and nursing care according to these risk factors to improve the prognosis of children with Kawasaki disease.

Abstract:The calcineurin and nuclear factor of activated T-cells (CaN-NFAT) signaling pathway had been found to be associated with Kawasaki disease (KD) susceptibility and coronary artery aneurysm formation as a contributor. To evaluate serum calcineurin (CaN) and nuclear factor of activated T-cells 1(NFAT1) levels in patients with Kawasaki disease (KD). Serum levels of CaN and NFAT1 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method in 66 healthy children and 74 KD patients at acute, afebrile and subacute stage. The serum levels of CaN and NFAT1 increased significantly in the acute stage, and decreased progressively in the afebrile and subacute stage, along with the reduction of C-reactive protein, white blood cells and neutrophil counts. And in the acute stage, the afebrile stage and the subacute stage, the expression of CaN and NFAT1 was upregulated significantly in KD patients compared to that in the healthy control. After the IVIG treatment, the serum levels of CaN and NFAT1 declined significantly in IVIG responders. However, the CaN and NTAT1 levels in the IVIG non-responders declined slowly. And in the afebrile stage, the NFAT1 levels were lower in KD patients with coronary artery lesions (CALs) (268.82 ± 11.96 ng/ml) than those without CALs (285.84 ± 25.13 ng/ml). However, the serum levels of CaN in KD patients with CALs had no significant difference with those in KD patients without CALs. The specific regulation of CaN and NFAT1 serum levels in the course of KD was suggested that both of them were related in the development of KD.

Abstract:In recent years,the understanding of KD has been deepened.Children with complete KD were timely diagnosed,but there was still a challenge for patients with incomplete KD.Full recognition of clinical features of incomplete KD would enable doctors to avoid delayed diagnosis and treatment,and reduce the incidence of coronary artery complications.Patients with 4 or fewer main criteria were considered with incomplete KD,and those with insufficient criteria and other atypical organ involved were considered with atypical KD.The main criteria for KD were in a clinically dynamic evolution,and some patients with incomplete KD present new main criteria and eventually meet the diagnostic criteria for complete KD.Early recognition of clinical features of patients with potential turning into complete KD was useful to improve the prognosis of children with KD.
547 cases of Kawasaki disease and related risk factors of coronary artery lesion

Abstract:Objectives Clinical characteristics and treatment of Kawasaki disease(KD)and its risk factors related to coronary artery lesion(CAL)were investigated. Methods Clinical features,diagnosis and treatment for a total of 547 patients hospitalized with KD during January 1990 to October 2006 were reviewed. Clinical features of typical and incomplete KD were compared and the related risk factors of CAL were analyzed. Results Typical KD was diagnosed in 434 cases,and incomplete KD in 113 cases. There was higher prevalence of CAL among incomplete KD group compared with that in typical KD group(P < 0.05). With the exception of peri-anus desquamation,other clinical manifestations in incomplete KD were sporadic. Of the 547 cases,103(18.82 %)got CAL. The related risk factors of CAL include age,gender,level of platelet,C-reaction protein and erythrocyte sendimentation rate. Conclusions Incomplete KD had high prevalence of CAL. The perianus desquamation was an important clue for early diagnosis of incomplete KD. The high risk factors of CAL include male,younger than 3 years old,elevated erythrocyte sendimentation rate,C-reaction protein and increased blood platelet counts.
Identification of clinical risk factors for coronary artery lesions in children with Kawasaki disease: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract:Background: Coronary artery lesions are the most severe complications of Kawasaki disease. Despite recent advances, evidence of the association between risk factors and coronary artery lesion is lacking. In this study, we demonstrated the potential clinical indicators that could assist to evaluate the prevalence of coronary artery lesion among paediatric patients with Kawasaki disease. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 260 paediatric patients with Kawasaki disease. Patients with coronary dilation, coronary aneurysm, and intimal thickening of coronary arteries were included in this study. Medical records of each patient were collected. Logistic regression analysis was performed to explore risk factors and the occurrence of coronary artery lesion in patients with Kawasaki disease. Results: Respectively, 64 (24.6%), 39 (15%), and 56 patients (21.5%) of the participants had coronary dilation, coronary aneurysm, and intimal thickening of coronary arteries. Univariate analysis revealed that age, gender, duration of fever, time of initial use of intravenous immunoglobulin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, white blood cell counts, time of platelet increase, the maximum value of platelet, albumin, and immunoglobulin G level was associated with coronary artery lesion. In multivariable logistic analysis, those younger and mainly males were associated with all three outcomes of coronary artery lesion, lower serum albumin levels, and later initial use of intravenous immunoglobulin were linked to a higher risk of coronary dilation and coronary aneurysm. Conclusions: The potential risk factors that could be used to estimate the occurrence of coronary artery lesion in Kawasaki disease patients are young age, male, lower serum albumin lever, and later initial use of intravenous immunoglobulin. However, long-term follow-up and multi-centre studies are required to verify our findings in the future.

Abstract:To compare the risk of coronary artery lesions (CAL) in children with complete and incomplete Kawasaki disease (KD) before and after immunoglobulin therapy and explore the mediation mechanisms underlying this association. All patients with KD admitted to the Wenzhou Medical University affiliated Yuying Children’s Hospital were divided into complete and incomplete KD groups. The independent effect of KD type on the risk of CAL and the intermediate effect of admission time on the association between KD type and CAL were assessed. The incidence of CAL in children with incomplete KD was higher than that in children with complete KD (33.9% vs 23.0%, p<0.001), and was also higher before therapy (27.5% vs 14.8%). Among children without CAL before therapy, there was no statistical difference in the incidence of CAL after treatment between the two groups. Mediation analysis found that the mediating effect of admission time was 1.07 (95% C: 1.01 to 1.13), and the direct effect of KD type on CAL was 1.59 (95% CI 1.17 to 2.16); proportion mediated was 15.71%. In conclusion, the risk of CAL among patients with incomplete KD was higher than that for complete KD, especially before therapy. In patients without CAL before treatment, the risk of CAL after treatment was equivalent for the two groups. Delayed admission may be one of the important mediating mechanisms for the higher risk of CAL in incomplete KD children.

Abstract:Kawasaki Disease (KD) is a vasculitis of unknown etiology commonly seen in infants and children. Children with Kawasaki disease are at risk for serious cardiovascular sequelae, especially coronary artery abnormalities, which can lead to myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction, and sudden death. Coronary artery lesions (CAL) caused by Kawasaki disease has become one of the common acquired heart diseases in children in some countries and regions. This article reviews the current research progress on the mechanism, risk factors and treatment of coronary artery damage in Kawasaki disease, aiming to improve the long-term prognosis of vascular health management in children with KD, in order to provide references for clinicians.

Abstract:Objective:To analyze the coronary angiographic (CAG) characteristics of coronary artery lesion (CAL) in children with Kawasaki disease (KD), and to clarify the necessity of CAG in the diagnosis and treatment of KD combined with CAL in children.Methods:It was a retrospective study to analyze the clinical data, electrocardiogram, echocardiography, time and findings of CAG in children with KD and CAL who underwent CAG in Shanghai Children′s Medical Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine from January 2013 to August 2022.The distribution, type, severity, and prognosis of CAL were analyzed.Results:A total of 117 children with KD and CAL were included in the analysis.The onset age of KD was from 2 months to 12.8 years old, and the age of performing CAG was from 8 months to 18.1 years old.A total of 234 coronary artery lesions were detected in 117 cases.Among them, CAL in the right coronary artery (RCA), left anterior descending branch (LAD), left main coronary artery and left circumflex artery were detected in 96 branches(41.1%), 78 branches(33.3%), 44 branches(18.8%), and 16 branches(6.8%), respectively.Unilateral coronary artery involvement was detected in 43 cases (36.8%), of which LAD was the dominant; while bilateral involvement was detected in 74 cases (63.2%), among which, LAD and RCA were the most involved arteries.Stratified by the degree of coronary involvement, large coronary aneurysms and severe coronary stenosis were most frequently occurred in the RCA and LAD.In contrast, 10 cases (13.6%), 20 cases (24.3%), 55 cases (45.8%) and 37 cases (67.3%) of intraluminal lesions were found in small, medium and large coronary aneurysms, and stenosis or occlusion, respectively.The incidence of intraluminal lesions tended to be higher in the site of severe lesions.CAG showed stenosis or occlusion in a total of 55 cases, and collateral circulation at varying degrees was found in cases of severe stenosis or occlusion.Conclusions:CAL in children with KD are complex and varied.Although clinical symptoms, routine electrocardiogram and cardiac ultrasound may indicate severe CAL.Their applications are limited by the diagnosis of the type (especially stenosis), degree, and extent of CAL, as well as the detection of extracoronary lesions.CAG is of great significance to identify vascular lesions and guide clinical management of KD combined with CAL in children.
Early Clinical Evaluation of Coronary Artery Lesions in Kawasaki Disease

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to analyze the early clinical features of coronary artery lesion (CAL) in Kawasaki disease (KD), evaluate systemic inflammation indicators, and enhance early recognition of CAL in the acute phase of KD. A total of 314 children with KD were divided into those with CAL (CAL group) and without CAL (NCAL group) using echocardiographic results, and their clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. For KD patients, male, children aged 3 to 9 years, and those with fever longer than 6 days before intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) use were more likely to have CAL. There were significant differences in sex, age, and fever time (P < .05). Moreover, some laboratory indicator test results revealed there was a significant difference between N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), and the CAL (P < .05). This study has certain guiding significance for early clinical evaluation.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent advances in understanding the development of coronary arteritis in Kawasaki disease. Kawasaki disease is the most common cause of acquired heart disease among children characterized with coronary artery abnormalities, which can cause myocardial ischemia, infarction, and even death. The pathogenic factors of Kawasaki disease and the pathological process of coronary artery disease are not clear at present, which brings challenges to the prevention and treatment of the disease. The treatment of Kawasaki disease focuses mainly on timely administration of intravenous high doses of immunoglobulin and aspirin. However, there are still some patients who do not respond well to this standard treatment, and its management remains a challenge. As a result, coronary artery lesions still occur in patients and affect their quality of life. In this review, we discuss updated research data of Kawasaki disease coronary artery lesions.

Clinical analysis of 201 patients with Kawasaki disease:what are the high risk factors

Abstract:Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics of the patients with Kawasaki disease (KD),the risk factors and prognosis of KD patients complicated with coronary artery lesion (CAL). Methods A total of 201 child patients with KD were treated in our hospital from 1999 to 2007. Their medical records and follow-up results were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into 2 groups according to the presence of CAL; the risk factors of CAL in KD patients were analyzed. Results The patients included 128 males and 73 females(m:f,1.75:1),with an age range of 3 months to 12 years and a median of 1.67 years. 90% of patients were younger than 5 years old. Twenty-one patients (10.4%) were diagnosed as incomplete KD (IKD). All patients received IVIG,and 15 patients were resistant to IVIG and were given another IVIG and (or) prednisone therapy. Forty-six (22.9%) of the 201 patients were complicated with CAL and 155 (77.1%) were not. Among patients with CAL,33 (71.7%) had mild CAL,8 (17.4%) had moderate CAL and 5 (10.9%) had coronary aneurysm. Univariate analysis showed that the risk factors for CAL included an age younger than 1 year,febricity lasting longer than 10 days,the intro-venous immunoglobulin (IVIG) injection delayed longer than 10 days,incomplete KD,and non-sensitivity to IVIG and thrombocytosis. Multivariate analysis showed the independent risk factors were the age younger than 1 year,the IVIG delayed longer than 10 days and the IVIG non-sensitivity. Two (4.3%) of the 46 patients with CAL were lost in follow-up,the rest were followed up for 6 months to 7 years,and 39 (84.8%) had recovered for their coronary disorders except for 5 cases (10.9%). Conclusion IVIG should be started as soon as a patient with fever who is younger than 1 year old and is diagnosed as IKD. For those with moderate to severe coronary aneurysms,the multilayer helix CT or coronary angiography should be suggested. Long-term follow-up is needed for all the patients even though the coronary disorders has not happened.

Abstract:Background: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis of medium arteries, particularly involving coronary arteries. Coronary artery lesions (CALs) is the most serious complication in the acute stage, potentially leading to ischemic cardiomyopathy, myocardial infarction and sudden death. Environmental factors and genetic background contribute to individual susceptibility to develop CALs. The aim of this study was to define the risk factors for CALs in an Italian cohort. Methods: Data of KD patients from 10 Italian sites were registered into a REDCap database where demographic and clinical data, laboratory findings and coronary status were recorded. KD was diagnosed according to AHA definition. We used multiple logistic regression analysis to identify independent risk factors for CALs. Results: A total of 517 patients were enrolled, mainly Caucasians (83.6%). Presentation was complete in 321 patients (62.8%) and IVIG responsiveness in 360 (70%). CALs developed in 136/517 (26.31%). Gender, age, ethnicity, clinical presentation, fever duration, non-coronary cardiac events, Hb, albumin and CRP were significantly different between patients with and without CALs, while seasonality was not. Male gender, age 10 days were independent risk factors for CALs. Conclusions: Age younger than 18 months, incomplete KD and longer fever duration are risk factors for CALs. Asian ethnicity also represents a risk factor in our Italian Cohort.

Abstract:Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, Ahead of Print. BACKGROUND:Coronary artery lesions (CALs) are the most common and major complication of Kawasaki disease (KD) in developed countries. However, the underlying immunologic mechanisms of CAL development in KD remain unclear.METHODS:Here, we conducted single-cell transcriptome analyses of 212 210 peripheral blood mononuclear cells collected from a cross-sectional cohort of 16 children, including 4 patients with KD with CALs, 5 patients with KD without CALs, 4 healthy controls, and 3 febrile controls.RESULTS:KD altered the proportion of peripheral blood mononuclear cells, including an increasing trend in inflammatory cells (megakaryocytes and monocytes) and a decreasing trend in lymphocytes (eg, CD4+T, CD8+T, mucosal-associated invariant T, natural killer, and γδ T cells), highlighting the potential presence of lymphopenia phenomenon in KD. Our data indicated the presence of inflammatory cytokine storm in patients with KD with CALs, caused by systemic upregulation of TNFSF13B, CXCL16, TNFSF10, and IL1RN, mainly produced by monocytes (especially for the Mono_CD14-CD16 cluster) and megakaryocytes. We also found that myeloid cells of patients with KD, particularly in those with CALs, might play a role in vascular injury (eg, increased MMP [matrix metalloproteinase] 9, MMP17, and MMP25) and immune cell recruitment. The immune landscape of patients with KD with CALs was featured by lower exhaustion levels in natural killer cells, a high cytotoxic state in the CD8_Pro cluster, and activation of the complement system in monocytes. Additionally, the activation of B cells was more pronounced in the early stage of KD.CONCLUSIONS:Collectively, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the roles of various immune cells and inflammatory cytokine storms in the development of CALs in KD and offers a valuable resource for identifying novel therapeutic targets for patients with KD with CALs.

Abstract:Aim: Kawasaki disease (KD) is a systemic vasculitis with unknown etiology. In addition to cardiovascular system involvement, it can also have other multiple organs involved. This study is aimed at investigating the correlation between anti-cardiolipin antibody (ACA)/D dimer/C reactive protein (CRP) and coronary artery lesions (CAL)/multiple-organ lesions in children with KD. Methods: Retrospective analysis was performed in 284 KD/IKD patients from May 2015 to April 2016. Among them, 175 were males (61.6%), with average age of 2 years and 5 months old. Patients were divided into ACA+ group and ACA- group, elevated D dimer group (DDE) and normal D dimer group (DDN), and coronary artery injury (CAL) group and non-coronary artery injury (NCAL) group. Results: ACA was most likely tested positive in younger KD children (p < 0.05). ACA+ and hypoproteinemia were correlated with CAL, thrombocytosis, and granulocytopenia (p < 0.05-0.01). Levels of cTnI and CK in the CAL group were significantly higher than those in the NCAL group (p < 0.05). CAL was more frequently detected in younger patients and patients with prolonged fever, later IVIG treatment, and elevated CRP over 100 mg/l, but there was no statistically significant difference (all p > 0.05). In the KD with DDE group, the incidence of granulopenia, thrombocytosis, myocardial damage, cholestasis, hypoproteinemia, and aseptic urethritis was significantly higher than that in the KD with DDN group (p < 0.05-0.01). However, elevated D dimer was not associated with CAL. CRP elevation was highly correlated with D dimer, but not with CAL. Conclusion: Higher incidence of CAL and myocardial damage occurred in KD patients with positive ACA and hypoproteinemia. In the current study, ACA was only tested for positive and negative, which is a limitation to this study. To further elucidate the association, ACA titers would establish its significance in drawing a conclusion for the significance of ACA in CAL and myocardial damages. In addition, higher incidence of CAL occurred in younger patients. The higher D dimer was associated with increased multiple-organ damage (MOD). CRP was closely correlated with D dimer, but not correlated with ACA and CAL.
Changes of Serum Interleukin-6,Interleukin-8 Levels and Their Associations with Coronary Artery Lesions in Children with Kawasaki Disease

Abstract:Objective To study the changes of serum IL-6,IL-8 levels and to investigate their associations with coronary artery lesions(CAL)in children with Kawasaki disease(KD).Methods From Oct.2003 to Dec.2005,46 children with KD(KD group)and 16 healthy children(healthy control group)were recruited in this study.The age of KD group ranged from 5 months to 8.75 years.KD children were divided into CAL group(18 cases)and non-CAL group(28 cases).Serum IL-6,IL-8 concentrations in KD group were compared to those of healthy control group.Results 1.The levels of serum IL-6 and IL-8 in KD group [52.39(24.39-134.46)ng·L-1,68.64(52.88-230.18)ng·L-1]were significantly higher than those in healthy control group[7.17(4.25-10.29)ng·L-1,10.34(9.60-11.57)ng·L-1](Pa0.05),and there was no correlation between them(r=-0.166,P0.1).2.The level of serum IL-6 in CAL group was significantly higher than that in non-CAL group[37.50(24.08-139.34)ng·L-1 vs 31.21(19.67-87.90)ng·L-1,P0.05].The level of IL-8 was 47.18(16.98-109.72)ng·L-1 in CAL group and 46.34(4.40-89.86)ng·L-1 in non-CAL group,there was no significant difference between them(P0.05).The elevation of IL-6,IL-8 levels had continually existed in 5 convalescent children who were detected coronary artery dilatation by ultrasound.Conclusions The levels of serum IL-6,IL-8 were markedly elevated in all children with KD,which can provide some evidences of the inflammation of coronary artery.IL-6 concentration were significantly elevated in CAL children,which might play a more important role in CAL than IL-8.When high serum IL-6 and IL-8 concentrations were observed in children with KD,CAL might develop CAL in the subacute or convalescent phase.

Abstract:OBJECTIVETo explore the endothelial function, carotid artery stiffness index and carotid intima-media thickness in children with a history of Kawasaki disease (KD).METHODSA cohort of 204 children was studied, which comprised 51 patients with Kawasaki disease with coronary artery lesion (CAL group), 50 patients with Kawasaki disease with normal coronary arteries (normal coronary arteries group), and 103 healthy age matched children (control group). Their systemic blood pressure, fasting cholesterol concentrations, flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery, carotid artery stiffness index and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) were compared.RESULTSFMD of the brachial artery in CAL group (5.2% +/- 1.9%) and normal coronary arteries group (6.8% +/- 2.0%) were significantly lower than that of control group (13.2% +/- 4.1%, both P < 0. 01); carotid artery stiffness index in CAL group (4.0 +/- 0.6) was significantly greater than that of normal coronary arteries group (3.6 +/- 0.6) and control group (3.4 +/- 0.5, P = 0.05, P < 0.01); likewise, IMT in CAL group (0.447 mm +/- 0.024 mm) was significantly higher than that of normal coronary arteries group (0.426 mm +/- 0.016 mm) and control group (0.424 mm +/- 0.016 mm, both P < 0.01). In multiple linear regression analysis, age and patient grouping were significant determinants of carotid artery stiffness index, FMD and IMT. There were significant correlations between carotid artery stiffness index, FMD and IMT in both healthy group and KD group after adjustment of age.CONCLUSIONThere were endothelial dysfunction and increased systemic arterial stiffness and IMT late after the acute phase of Kawasaki disease. flow-mediated dilation of the brachial artery, carotid artery stiffness index combined carotid intima-media thickness can evaluated completely the prognosis of vascular lesion in convalescence after KD.

Abstract:A form of systemic vasculitis that affects mostly small and medium-sized vessels, Kawasaki disease (KD) is most commonly found in children under the age of 5 years old. Though its etiology is unknown, KD has been the most frequent acquired heart disease in developing countries. Its incidence has increased over recent decades in many centuries, including Japan, Korea, and China. The most severe complications of KD are coronary artery lesions (CAL), including dilation, fistula, aneurysm, arterial remodeling, stenosis, and occlusion. Aneurysm formation has been observed in 20-25% of KD patients that do not receive intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) treatment, and in 3-5% that do receive it. Coronary artery dilation has been found in about 30% of KD patients in the acute stage, although mostly in the transient form. Diminishing the occurrence and regression of CAL is a vital part of treating KD. In this review article, I demonstrate the clinical method to prevent CAL formation used at the Kawasaki Disease Center in Taiwan.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the expression of S100A12 on the surface of circulating endothelial cells (CECs) in children with Kawasaki disease (KD) and the correlations between S100A12 and coronary artery lesions (CALs). The ratio of CECs to mononuclear cells (CECs/MNC), the positive rate of S100A12 on CECs surface (CECs-S100A12/CECs), and the fluorescence intensity of S100A12 on CECs surface (FI-S100A12-CECs) were evaluated respectively in 42 patients with acute stage (A-KD), subacute stage (SA-KD) and convalescent stage KD (C-KD). The CECs/MNC ratio increased significantly in patients with A-KD and SA-KD with CALs. The CECs-S100A12/CECs rate and FI-S100A12-CECs level were significantly higher in patients with KD than in the controls. The FI-S100A12-CECs level decreased to near half levels in patients with SA-KD and C-KD without CALs, but increased continuously in patients with SA-KD with CALs. The CECs/MNC ratio and FI-S100A12-CECs level in patients with SA-KD with CALs were significantly higher than in patients with SA-KD without CALs. The FI-S100A12-CECs level was significantly higher in patients with C-KD with CALs than in C-KD without CALs. The S100A12 expression on the CECs surface increased significantly in patients with KD and persisted for a longer time in patients with CALs, suggesting that the S100A12 expression on CECs may be involved in the development of CALs.
