Abstract:Tracing the anthropogenic fingerprint and potential nutrient release from sediments is crucial from ecological and economic perspectives, but the lack of effective and low-cost tracking techniques poses a significant challenge. Here, we investigate the optical properties and molecular composition of sedimentary dissolved organic matter (DOM) from surface sediments (n = 41) collected along the land-sea continuum of an industrialized and urbanized bay in China. We use optical techniques (UV–visible spectroscopy and Excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy) and Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry for sedimentary DOM characterization. Five fluorescent components (C1-C5) are validated by Parallel Factor analysis (PARAFAC), representing diverse sources and types of sedimentary DOM, including aromatic/terrestrial, microbial, anthropogenic, and protein-like substances. Molecular analysis further reveals 14,052 unique compounds. Distinct molecular characteristics are identified for sedimentary dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), phosphorus (DOP), and sulfur (DOS). Sedimentary DOP exhibits the highest saturation, DON the highest aromaticity, and DOS the highest molecular weight. Optical parameters (e.g. fluorescence index) correlate significantly with specific molecular formulas of sedimentary DON, DOP, and DOS, suggesting that optical signatures can serve as a diagnostic tool for exploring internal nutrient release and point source pollution in aquatic ecosystems. This linkage will allow for efficient large-scale monitoring of sedimentary heteroatomic compound cycling in aquatic systems using optical techniques with robust interpretations, which has significant implications for sustainable watershed management.

Abstract:The international scientific community is actively engaged in assessing ice sheet and alpine glacier fluctuations at a variety of scales. The availability of stereoscopic, multitemporal, and multispectral satellite imagery from the optical wavelength regions of the electromagnetic spectrum has greatly increased our ability to assess glaciological conditions and map the cryosphere. There are, however, important issues and limitations associated with accurate satellite information extraction and mapping, as well as new opportunities for assessment and mapping that are all rooted in understanding the fundamentals of the radiation transfer cascade. We address the primary radiation transfer components, relate them to glacier dynamics and mapping, and summarize the analytical approaches that permit transformation of spectral variation into thematic and quantitative parameters. We also discuss the integration of satellite-derived information into numerical modeling approaches to facilitate understandings of glacier dynamics and causal mechanisms.

Abstract:Hyperspectral imaging is a recent technology that has been gaining popularity in the geosciences since the 1990s, both in remote sensing and in the field or laboratory. Indeed, it allows the rapid acquisition of a large amount of data that are spatialized on the studied object with a low-cost, compact, and automatable sensor. This practical article aims to present the current state of knowledge on the use of hyperspectral imaging for sediment core analysis (core logging). To use the full potential of this type of sensor, many points must be considered and will be discussed to obtain reliable and quality data to extract many environmental properties of sediment cores. Hyperspectral imaging is used in many fields (e.g., remote sensing, geosciences and artificial intelligence) and offers many possibilities. The applications of the literature will be reviewed under five themes: lake and water body trophic status, source-to-sink approaches, organic matter and mineralogy studies, and sedimentary deposit characterization. Afterward, discussions will be focused on a multisensor core logger, data management, integrated use of these data for the selection of sample areas, and other opportunities. Through this practical article, we emphasize that hyperspectral imaging applied to sediment cores is still an emerging tool and shows many possibilities for refining the understanding of environmental processes.

Snowcover Survey over an Arctic Glacier Forefield: Contribution of Photogrammetry to Identify "Icing" Variability and Processes

Abstract:Current climate shift has significant impacts on both quality and quantity of snow precipitation. This directly influences spatial variability of the snowpack as well as cumulative snow height. Contemporary glacier retreat reorganizes periglacial morphology: while the glacier area decreases, the moraine area increases. The latter is becoming a new water storage potential almost as important as the glacier itself, but with a much more complex topography. This work hence fills one of the missing variables of the hydrological budget equation of an arctic glacier basin by providing an estimate of the snow water equivalent (SWE) of the moraine contribution. Such a result is achieved by investigating Structure from Motion (SfM) image processing applied to pictures collected from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) as a method to produce snow depth maps over the proglacial moraine area. Several UAV campaigns were carried out on a small glacial basin in Spitsbergen (Arctic): measurements were made at the maximum snow accumulation season (late April) while reference topography maps were acquired at the end of hydrological year (late September) when the moraine is mostly free of snow. Snow depth is determined from Digital Surface Model (DSM) subtraction. Using dedicated and natural ground control points for relative positioning of the DSMs, the relative DSM georeferencing with sub-meter accuracy removes the main source of uncertainty when assessing snow depth. For areas where snow is deposited on bare rock surfaces, the correlation between avalanche probe in-situ snow depth measurements and DSM differences is excellent. Differences in ice covered areas between the two measurement techniques are attributed to the different quantities measured.

Abstract:The Arctic is directly impacted by climate change. The increase in air temperature drives the thawing of permafrost and an increase in coastal erosion and river discharge. This leads to a greater input of sediment and organic matter into coastal waters, which substantially impacts the ecosystems, the subsistence economy of the local population, and the climate because of the transformation of organic matter into greenhouse gases. Yet, the patterns of sediment dispersal in the nearshore zone are not well known, because ships do not often reach shallow waters and satellite remote sensing is traditionally focused on less dynamic environments. The goal of this study is to use the extensive Landsat archive to investigate sediment dispersal patterns specifically on an exemplary Arctic nearshore environment, where field measurements are often scarce. Multiple Landsat scenes were combined to calculate means of sediment dispersal and sea surface temperature under changing seasonal wind conditions in the nearshore zone of Herschel Island Qikiqtaruk in the western Canadian Arctic since 1982. We use observations in the Landsat red and thermal wavebands, as well as a recently published water turbidity algorithm to relate archive wind data to turbidity and sea surface temperature. We map the spatial patterns of turbidity and water temperature at high spatial resolution in order to resolve transport pathways of water and sediment at the water surface. Our results show that these pathways are clearly related to the prevailing wind conditions, being ESE and NW. During easterly wind conditions, both turbidity and water temperature are significantly higher in the nearshore area. The extent of the Mackenzie River plume and coastal erosion are the main explanatory variables for sediment dispersal and sea surface temperature distributions in the study area. During northwesterly wind conditions, the influence of the Mackenzie River plume is negligible. Our results highlight the potential of high spatial resolution Landsat imagery to detect small-scale hydrodynamic processes, but also show the need to specifically tune optical models for Arctic nearshore environments.

Abstract:Google Earth view of Strathcona Fiord and Strathcona Lake illustrating sediment delivery from a deglaciated landscape. Geophysical and morphosedimentary investigations were conducted at Strathcona Lake, a High Arctic proglacial lake and its catchment connected to the Taggart Lake Glacier, northwest corner of the Prince of Wales Icefield in Ellesmere Island (eastern Canadian Arctic Archipelago). The mapping of glaciomarine landforms and units provides, together with updated radiocarbon information, a framework for catchment evolution and sediment delivery to the lake during deglaciation and glacio‐isostatically induced relative sea level fall. A staircase of deltas with descending altitudes provide evidence for a spatially diachronous timing of ice retreat from the catchments around Strathcona Lake. Swath bathymetric mapping coupled with acoustic sediment stratigraphy show draped infills with a transition from marine to rhythmically bedded lacustrine sediments produced by hyperpycnal flows. Multiproxy investigations on a set of sediment cores highlight proglacial varves interrupted by rhythmites resulting from the erosion of fluvially incised glaciomarine sediments stored in the catchment. Pluricentimetric proglacial varves formed during the last century in response to periods of intense glacial melt, notably since the 21st century. The sedimentary record suggests the varved sediments from Strathcona Lake can be used to reconstruct the melting history of the Prince of Wales Icefield. This work provides a geomorphological, sedimentological, and geochemical framework that should guide future varve‐based reconstructions of glacial and climatic variability in Ellesmere Island.

Supraglacial Streams on the Greenland Ice Sheet Delineated from Combined Spectral-Shape Information in High-Resolution Satellite Imagery

Abstract:Supraglacial meltwater streams and lakes that form each summer across large expanses of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) ablation zone have global implications for sea level rise but remain one of the least studied hydrologic systems on Earth. Remote sensing of supraglacial streams is challenging owing to their narrow width (~1-30 m) and proximity to other features having similar visible/near-infrared reflectance (lakes and slush) or shape (dry stream channels, crevasses, and fractures). This letter presents a new automated “spectral-shape” procedure for delineating actively flowing streams in high-resolution satellite imagery, utilizing both spectral and pattern information. First, a modified normalized difference water index adapted for ice ( NDWI ice ) enhances the spectral contrast between open water and drier snow/ice surfaces. Next, three NDWI ice thresholds are used to mask deep-water lakes and discern open water from slush, in concert with a multipoints fast marching method to rejoin resulting stream fragments. Comparison of this procedure with manual digitization for six WorldView-2 images in southwestern Greenland demonstrates its value for detecting actively flowing supraglacial streams, particularly in slushy areas where classification performance dramatically improves (85.2% success) versus simple threshold methods (52.9% and 59.4% success for low and moderate thresholds, respectively). While a simple threshold approach is satisfactory for areas known to be slush free, the procedure outlined here enables comprehensive stream mapping across the GrIS ablation zone, regardless of slush conditions and/or the presence of similarly shaped glaciological features.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in freshwater environments is an important source of organic carbon, supporting bacterial respiration. Frozen environments cover vast expanses of our planet, with glaciers and ice-sheets storing upwards of six petagrams of organic carbon. It is generally believed that DOM liberated from ice stimulates downstream environments. If true, glacial DOM is an important component of global carbon cycling. However, coupling the release of DOM to microbial activity is challenging due to the molecular complexity of DOM and the metabolic connectivity within microbial communities. Using a single environmentally relevant organism, we demonstrate that processing of compositionally diverse DOM occurs, but, even though glacially derived DOM is chemically labile, it is unable to support sustained respiration. In view of projected changes in glacier DOM export, these findings imply that biogeochemical impacts on downstream environments will depend on the reactivity and heterogeneity of liberated DOM, as well as the timescale.

Abstract:Multiple ice age cycles spanning the last three million years have fundamentally transformed the Arctic landscape. The cadence, intensity and pattern of this glacial modification underpin the stability of Arctic geosystems over geologic time scales, including its hydrology, circulation patterns, slope stability, hydrocarbon fluid flow, geochemical/sediment cycling and nutrient supply. The Barents Shelf provides a unique arena to investigate long-term landscape evolution as it has undergone significant glacial modification during the Quaternary and has an extensive stratigraphic data repository motivated by decades of hydrocarbon seismic and well exploration. Here, we assimilate new geological datasets with ice sheet erosion modelling to incrementally reconstruct the geomorphic evolution of the Eurasian Arctic domain over each of the 47 glaciations since the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation ~2.74 Ma. We utilise this time-transgressive framework to review hypotheses regarding the heterogenous development of the Barents Shelf and the timing of key topographic reconfiguration episodes. Our results demonstrate that up to 2.6 km of bedrock was glacially removed to the shelf margins, and though the mean rate of erosion declines over the Quaternary, the efficacy of glacial erosion has a more complex timeline. Initially, erosion was highly effective as large expanses of the Eurasian Arctic switched from subaerial exposure to marine conditions around 2 Ma. Thereafter, erosional efficacy decreased as the landscape desensitised to successive glaciations but, after 1 Ma, it increased as a dynamic, marine-based ice sheet drained by ice streams expanded, selectively eroding large outlet troughs to the shelf edge. Critically for Arctic climate, at ~0.69 Ma this episode of enhanced preferential erosion opened up the Barents Seaway establishing a new circulation pathway between the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. Our 4D landscape reconstruction provides key boundary conditions for paleoclimate models and establishes a new framework for assessing the profound impact of late-Cenozoic glaciation on the Eurasian Arctic landscape.

Abstract:The recession of Alpine glaciers causes an increase in the extent of proglacial areas and leads to changes in the water discharge and sediment balance (morphodynamics and sediment transport). Although the processes occurring in proglacial areas are relevant not only from a scientific point of view but also for the purpose of climate change adaptation, there is a lack of work on the continuous monitoring and multitemporal characterization of these areas. This study offers a multidisciplinary approach that merges the contributions of different scientific disciplines, such as hydrology, geophysics, geomatics, and water engineering, to characterize the Rutor Glacier and its proglacial area. Since 2020, we have surveyed the glacier and its proglacial area using both uncrewed and crewed aerial surveys ( https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8089499 , Corte et al., 2023c ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10100968 , Corte et al., 2023f ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10074530 , Corte et al., 2023g ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10101236 , Corte et al., 2023h ; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7713146 , Corte et al., 2023b ). We have determined the bathymetry of the most downstream proglacial lake and the thickness of the sediments deposited on its bottom ( https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7682072 , Corte et al., 2023a ). The water depth at four different locations within the hydrographic network of the proglacial area ( https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7697100 , Corte et al., 2023d ) and the bedload at the glacier snout ( https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7708800 , Corte et al., 2023e ) have also been continuously monitored. The synergy of our approach enables the characterization, monitoring, and understanding of a set of complex and interconnected processes occurring in a proglacial area.

Abstract:Accelerated climate warming is causing significant reductions in the volume of Arctic glaciers, such that previously ice‐capped bare ground is uncovered, harboring soil development. Monitoring the thermal and hydrologic characteristics of soils, which strongly affect microbial activity, is important to understand the evolution of emerging terrestrial landscapes. We instrumented two sites on the forefield of a retreating Svalbard glacier, representing sediment ages of approximately 5 and 60 years since exposure. Our instrumentation included an ERT array complemented by adjacent point sensor measurements of subsurface temperature and water content. Sediments were sampled at each location and at two more additional sites (120 and 2000 years old) along a chronosequence aligned with the direction of glacial retreat. Analysis suggests older sediments have a lower bulk density and contain fewer large minerals, which we interpret to be indicative of sediment reworking over time. Two months of monitoring data recorded during summer 2021 indicate that the 60‐year‐old sediments are stratified showing more spatially consistent changes in electrical resistivity, whereas the younger sediments show a more irregular structure, with consequences on heat and moisture conductibility. Furthermore, our sensors reveal that young sediments have a higher moisture content, but a lower moisture content variability.

Ice Core Science Meets Computer Vision: Challenges and Perspectives

Abstract:Polar ice cores play a central role in studies of the earth's climate system through natural archives. A pressing issue is the analysis of the oldest, highly thinned ice core sections, where the identification of paleoclimate signals is particularly challenging. For this, state-of-the-art imaging by laser-ablation inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) has the potential to be revolutionary due to its combination of micron-scale 2D chemical information with visual features. However, the quantitative study of record preservation in chemical images raises new questions that call for the expertise of the computer vision community. To illustrate this new inter-disciplinary frontier, we describe a selected set of key questions. One critical task is to assess the paleoclimate significance of single line profiles along the main core axis, which we show is a scale-dependent problem for which advanced image analysis methods are critical. Another important issue is the evaluation of post-depositional layer changes, for which the chemical images provide rich information. Accordingly, the time is ripe to begin an intensified exchange among the two scientific communities of computer vision and ice core science. The collaborative building of a new framework for investigating high-resolution chemical images with automated image analysis techniques will also benefit the already wide-spread application of LA-ICP-MS chemical imaging in the geosciences.

Data-driven insights into correlation among geophysical setting, topography and seafloor sediments in the Ross Sea, Antarctic

Abstract:Detailed mapping based on the high-resolution grids, such as GEBCO, ETOPO1, GlobSed, EGM-2008 is crucial for various domains of Earth sciences: geophysics, glaciology, Quaternary, sedimentology, geology, environmental science, geomorphology, etc. The study presented a GMT-based scripting techniques of the cartographic data processing aimed at the comparative analysis of the bathymetry, sediment thickness, geologic objects and geophysical settings in the study area based on various datasets. The study area is located in the Ross Sea, Antarctic. The highest values of the sediment thickness over 7,500 m are dominating in the southwest segment of the Ross Sea closer to the Victoria Land, followed by the region over the Ross Ice Shelf with values between 5,500 to 7,000 m (170°-175°W). The increased sediment thickness (2,500 to 3,000 m) was also mapped seen in the region NE off the Sulzberger Bay (70-75°S to 140-155°W), caused by the closeness of the Marie Bird Land ice coasts. A remarkable correlation between the gravity and the topography of the sea-land border in the Marie Bird Land area is well reflected in the coastal line and a set of the higher values in the free-air gravity. On the contrary, negative values (–60 to -80 mGal) are notable along the submarine toughs stretching parallel in the western part of the basin: e.g. the trough stretching in NW-SE direction in the 170°W-175°E, 65°S-68°S, between the 167°W-175°W, 70°S-72°S. Such correlations are clearly visible on the map, indicating geological lineaments and bathymetric depressions correlating with gravity grids. The paper contributes to the regional studies of the Ross Sea, the Antarctic and Polar region, and development of the cartographic technical methodologies by presenting an application of the GMT for thematic mapping.

Abstract:Debris-covered glaciers are an important component of glacier systems on Earth. In this paper, using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images, MOD05 products and digital elevation model (DEM) as data source. Land surface reflectance, land surface temperature (LST) and topographic slope are retrieved from optical bands, thermal band and DEM, respectively. A rule set that combines optical reflectance, LST and slope is proposed to identify debris-covered glaciers. The experimental results indicate that when introducing LST, the overall accuracy of identification increase by approximately 2.38% compared to that without using LST, and the majority of misclassifications of debris-covered glaciers are corrected.
Upscaling ground‐based structural glaciological investigations via satellite remote sensing to larger‐scale ice masses: Bylot Island, Canadian Arctic

Abstract:Using satellite remote sensing, this study aims to assess the validity of upscaling ground‐based structural observations of small valley glaciers, to larger‐scale ice masses that are too vast or inaccessible for field‐study or ground‐truthing. Focusing on four adjacent valley glaciers on Bylot Island, Nunavut, Arctic Canada, we establish that ground‐based structural observations from two smaller (Stagnation and Fountain glaciers) can be used to interpret the structures visible in optical satellite imagery in two much larger glaciers (Aktineq and Sermilik glaciers). All the glaciers investigated have prominent longitudinal lineations, which are interpreted from ground observations to be longitudinal foliation. Other structures that were identified include primary stratification, crevasses, crevasse traces, and thrust‐faults. Strong longitudinal foliation is concentrated at flow‐unit boundaries, with differential ablation of ice facies commonly resulting in a ridge‐and‐furrow supraglacial topography that controls supraglacial streams and debris concentrations. Consequently, areas of strong foliation appear darker than areas of weak foliation in satellite imagery. As coarser resolution imagery is utilised to map large‐scale ice masses, sub‐pixel structural information is lost. Individual lineations mapped in coarser resolution imagery therefore probably comprise groups of clustered foliation at the sub‐pixel scale. Lateral narrowing measurements and calculated one‐dimensional strain across zones of longitudinal foliation are assessed as a tool for identifying large‐scale surface strain patterns, in particular large‐scale pure shear regimes. These one‐dimensional strain measurements suggest that flow‐unit boundaries are areas that undergo considerable cumulative strains. The upscaling approach used here can be applied to the largest ice masses, notably the Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Direct measurement of optical properties of glacier ice using a photon-counting diffuse LiDAR

Abstract:The production of meltwater from glacier ice, which is exposed at the margins of land ice during the summer, is responsible for a large proportion of glacier mass loss. The rate of meltwater production from glacier ice is especially sensitive to its physical structure and chemical composition which combine to determine the albedo of glacier ice. However, the optical properties of near-surface glacier ice are not well known since most prior work has focused on ice made in the laboratory or from deep cores. Here, we demonstrate a measurement technique based on diffuse propagation of nanosecond-duration laser pulses in near-surface glacier ice that enables the independent measurement of the scattering and absorption coefficients, allowing for a complete description of the processes governing radiative transfer. We employ a photon-counting detector to overcome the high losses associated with diffuse optics. The instrument is highly portable and rugged, making it optimally suited for deployment in remote regions. A set of measurements taken on Collier Glacier, Oregon, serves as a demonstration of the technique. These measurements provide insight into both physical structure and composition of near-surface glacier ice and open new avenues for the analysis of light-absorbing impurities and remote sensing of the cryosphere.

Abstract:The past decade has seen an explosive increase in the number of peer reviewed papers reporting new scientific findings in geomorphology (including fans, channels, floodplains and landscape evolution), geologic mapping, tectonics and faulting, coastal processes, lava flows, hydrology (especially snow and runoff routing), glaciers and geo-archaeology. A common genesis of such findings is often newly available decimeter resolution 'bare Earth' geodetic images, derived from airborne laser swath mapping, a.k.a. airborne LiDAR, observations. In this paper we trace nearly a half century of advances in geodetic science made possible by space age technology, such as the invention of short-pulse-length high-pulse-rate lasers, solid state inertial measurement units, chip-based high speed electronics and the GPS satellite navigation system, that today make it possible to map hundreds of square kilometers of terrain in hours, even in areas covered with dense vegetation or shallow water. To illustrate the impact of the LiDAR observations we present examples of geodetic images that are not only stunning to the eye, but help researchers to develop quantitative models explaining how terrain evolved to its present form, and how it will likely change with time. Airborne LiDAR technology continues to develop quickly, promising ever more scientific discoveries in the years ahead.

Mapping the in situ microspatial distribution of ice algal biomass through hyperspectral imaging of sea-ice cores

Abstract:Ice-associated microalgae make a significant seasonal contribution to primary production and biogeochemical cycling in polar regions. However, the distribution of algal cells is driven by strong physicochemical gradients which lead to a degree of microspatial variability in the microbial biomass that is significant, but difficult to quantify. We address this methodological gap by employing a field-deployable hyperspectral scanning and photogrammetric approach to study sea-ice cores. The optical set-up facilitated unsupervised mapping of the vertical and horizontal distribution of phototrophic biomass in sea-ice cores at mm-scale resolution (using chlorophyll a [Chl a] as proxy), and enabled the development of novel spectral indices to be tested against extracted Chl a (R2 ≤ 0.84). The modelled bio-optical relationships were applied to hyperspectral imagery captured both in situ (using an under-ice sliding platform) and ex situ (on the extracted cores) to quantitatively map Chl a in mg m-2 at high-resolution (≤ 2.4 mm). The optical quantification of Chl a on a per-pixel basis represents a step-change in characterising microspatial variation in the distribution of ice-associated algae. This study highlights the need to increase the resolution at which we monitor under-ice biophysical systems, and the emerging capability of hyperspectral imaging technologies to deliver on this research goal.
