Abstract:Metastructures, artificial arrangements of micro/macrostructures, possess unique properties and are of significant interest in aerospace, stealth technology, and various other applications. Recent studies have focused on quasi-zero stiffness metastructures, providing an outstanding vibration isolation capability. However, existing methods are constrained to low preloads and lack the consideration of structural analysis, despite their intended use in practical structures. This study introduces...

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper mainly discusses how to use machine learning-driven design optimization methods to design folded-induced meta-structures with high preloading quasi-zero stiffness characteristics to achieve low-frequency vibration isolation. The application of existing quasi-zero stiffness meta-structures is limited under high preload and lacks sufficient structural analysis. In this study, the authors combined deep reinforcement learning with finite element analysis (FEA) to establish an optimization framework aimed at simultaneously considering structural safety and quasi-zero stiffness characteristics. During the optimization process, deep reinforcement learning adjusts the design parameters by setting rewards and penalties to ensure that the structure meets the requirements of low stiffness while ensuring safety. The meta-structures manufactured through 3D printing were validated through compression and vibration experiments, demonstrating their quasi-zero stiffness characteristics even under high target preload and excellent vibration damping performance within the low-frequency range. The experimental results showed that the optimized meta-structures reduced the elastic wave transmission rate by approximately 90% in the low-frequency range of 20 to 50Hz, reaching approximately -20dB, confirming their potential in vibration isolation. Additionally, the study found that the characteristics of the meta-structures can be customized based on the arrangement of unit cell arrays, and deep reinforcement learning can be used for structural optimization considering multiple factors. In conclusion, this work proposes an innovative approach that achieves quasi-zero stiffness characteristics in meta-structures under high loads through optimized design, effectively addressing the challenges of low-frequency vibration isolation.
