Abstract:PurposeTo explore the safety profile and overall visual improvement over the course of RGP contact lens wear on children with unilateral or bilateral amblyopia resulting from myopia.MethodsThis was a retrospective analysis case series study. Clinical records of 15 patients who were fitted with RGP contact lenses at the Shanghai Eye and EENT Hospital of Fudan University between the period of January 2009 to December 2014 were reviewed. The inclusion criteria for review included patients with myopia of −3.00DS or greater in one or both eyes and an initial best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of logMAR 0.4 or worse for 3year olds, and logMAR 0.3 or worse for 4 years old and above. One or both myopic eyes were fitted with RGP lenses.Results15 subjects and 22 amblyopic eyes were included. The mean baseline BCVA was logMAR0.70±0.38, which improved to a VA of 0.23±0.28 at the time of review (p<0.05). Baseline myopia also increased from −8.18±2.93DS to −11.41±3.76DS (p<0.05). The final visual acuity at the time of this review was correlated with the initial refractive error (r=−0.695, p<0.05) as well as the initial BCVA (r=0.854, p<0.05). There was also a strong correlation between initial refractive error and initial BCVA (r=0.−801, p<0.05)ConclusionRGP contact lens wear is a safe and effective refractive treatment option in young children with amblyopia due to myopia.

Abstract:目的:探讨低龄儿童配戴硬性接触镜(RGP)的有效性、可行性和安全性.方法:对36例62眼的6～8岁低龄儿童进行RGP配戴,观察患儿的RGP配戴和适应情况、视力矫正效果和并发症情况.结果:有56眼戴框架眼镜时被诊断为弱视的患者,其中21眼(37.50%)在戴RGP镜后矫正视力≥0.8.62眼均一次配戴成功,2 w内均能适应全天日戴.3个月随访时有17例(47.22%)自己独立配戴,12例(33.33%)自已独立清洗,无角膜擦伤或角膜溃疡等严重并发症,有29例(90.62%)患儿家长对配戴RGP表示满意.结论:低龄儿童是适合配戴RGP的,配戴RGP安全有效,但要倍加小心,注意随访。
Microbial Contamination of Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) Trial Lenses and Lens Cases in China

Abstract:Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the microbial contamination level and its influencing factors of rigid gas permeable (RGP) trial lenses and lens cases in China.Materials and Methods: A total of 107 RGP trial lenses and lens cases were collected from 7 main hospitals or optometric centers in China. Three sites including the lenses, case interiors and case screw tops were sampled for bacterial and fungal culture and identification. The contamination rates of these three sites and their relationship with lens care regimes were further analyzed.Results: The overall contamination rate was 73.8% for either lenses or cases, and 43.0% of lenses, 57.0% of case interiors and 65.4% of case screw tops respectively. The most frequently isolated microorganisms were Serratia spp., Burkholderia spp., Pandoraea spp., and Achromobacter spp. from all three sites. The contamination rate was positively related to the lens use frequency. Compared with dry-stored lenses, the contamination rate was significantly higher in wet-stored group (P < .001*). Inadequate disinfection and improper lens and case care regimes were also associated with higher contamination rates.Conclusions: Our study reported that the RGP trial lenses and cases used for fittings had a considerably high contamination rate. The safe use of RGP trial lenses and education of optometrists on the regular maintenance of trial lenses should be emphasized.
Intraocular Pressure, Age, and Central Corneal Thickness in a Healthy Chinese Children Population: The Handan Offspring Myopia Study

Abstract:Purpose To assess the distribution and factors related to intraocular pressure (IOP) in a Chinese children population in Northern China. Methods 1,238 offspring aged 6 to 18 years, residing in six villages, were recruited for this current study, the Handan Offspring Myopia Study. Participants underwent an interviewer-administered questionnaire and a complete ocular examination, including standardized measurement of IOP with Perkins applanation tonometry. Results 1,648 eyes of 828 children were included in the analysis. The mean IOP was 13.9 +/- 1.6 mmHg. The mean IOP for the study population increased from 13.0 +/- 1.5 mmHg for those 6 to 7 years of age to 14.2 +/- 1.4 mmHg for those 15 years of age or older (P < .001). The mean central corneal thickness (CCT) was 548.7 +/- 32.1 mu m, and had no difference among different age groups and gender. In univariate regression analysis, age (0.12 mmHg per 1 year old), height (0.09 mmHg per 5 cm), weight (0.02 mmHg per kg), body mass index (0.07 mmHg per 1 m/kg2), systolic blood pressure (0.06 mmHg per 5 mmHg), CCT (0.06 mmHg per 5 mu m), and SE (-0.11 mmHg per 1 D) were correlated with IOP. In multivariate regression analysis, higher IOP was only associated with older ages (p = .002) and thicker CCT (p = .001). Conclusion The mean IOP in healthy rural Chinese children aged 6-18 years is about 14 mmHg, which is lower than in adults in the same locality. The mean IOP is slightly increasing with age during childhood, which is opposite to the result among adults. Age and CCT are the major independent factors associated with IOP.

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors affecting long-term compliance with rigid gas-permeable contact lens (RGPCL) wear in patients with keratoconus (KC). A total of 189 patients with KC (374 eyes) were included in the study, and were divided into two groups: the compliant group and the non-compliant group. Corneal topographic measurements, refractive results, and RGPCL parameters were compared between the two groups. A vision-related quality of life questionnaire was completed by all of the patients. The results demonstrated that patients diagnosed with bilateral KC were more compliant with RGPCL wear than patients diagnosed with unilateral KC (p = 0.0167). There were no significant differences between the compliant and non-compliant groups in terms of their corneal topographic measurements, refractive results, RGPCL parameters, or corneal cross-linking surgery history (all p > 0.05). In contrast, KC patients’ subjective experience with RGPCL wear—including visual acuity (p = 0.006), overall satisfaction (p < 0.001), quality of life (p < 0.001), and good adaptation during the short-term (p < 0.001)—had a significant effect on the long-term compliance with RGPCL wear. In conclusion, patients’ subjective experiences, rather than their ocular biometrics, significantly influence their long-term compliance with RGPCL wear.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Purpose</h3><p>To determine factors associated with non-adherence to contact lens wear schedule involving single vision and myopia control contact lenses in children.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>Data from 379 children enrolled in a prospective, double masked, randomized clinical trial, aged 8–13 years, cycloplegic spherical equivalent of -0.75 to -3.50D and wearing either: single vision silicone hydrogel (SiH) CL (control lens); two anti-myopia SiH CL that incorporated relative plus in the central and periphery in a stepped manner (test lens I and II); and two extended depth of focus hydrogel CL (test lens III and IV) was considered. A questionnaire was administered to the participants at every scheduled visit and gathered information on days of wear/week and subjective assessments of ocular comfort and visual quality on an analog scale of 1–10.Participants were categorized as "Adherent" when lens wear was ≥ 6 days/week or "Non-adherent" when lens wear ≤ 5 days/week. Categorized adherence data was summarized as a percentage across visits for each CL type. Differences between the two groups were analyzed using linear mixed model.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>For the control lens, 79.6 % participants were adherent as compared to 63.7%–74.6% with test lenses (p=0.026). Non-adherence was greater in those that discontinued (p<0.001). Subjective ratings of visual quality for static and dynamic tasks were lower with non-adherent wearers and more variable between visits. Ocular comfort was also poorer in non-adherent wearers irrespective of lens material or lens design. Male gender, lower baseline myopia, lower high contrast visual acuity and esophoria were associated with a higher risk of non-adherence.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>The study identified a wide range of factors associated with non-adherence to lens wear schedule. Paying specific attention to these factors when evaluating patients for CL wear and taking steps to ensure satisfaction in lens wear may promote longer term continuation of wear.</p>

Abstract:Purpose The aim here was to study the safety and efficacy of fitting a rigid gas-permeable contact lens (RGP CL) for visual rehabilitation in patients with ocular trauma. Methods A retrospective study was performed on 17 aphakic eyes of patients (16 men and one woman) after surgery for ocular trauma. RGP CLs (including nine brown-tinted lenses) were fitted unilaterally for visual rehabilitation in these patients. The uncorrected vision, spectacle visual acuity and contact lens (CL) visual acuity were recorded. Results Seventeen patients were selected on the basis that they had undergone surgery following ocular trauma. All eyes fitted were aphakic (n = 17) and nine eyes were fitted with brown-tinted RGP lenses to compensate for traumatic aniridia. All eyes were fitted with RGP CL. A visual acuity of 6/20 or better was seen in seven eyes (41.2 per cent) with spectacle correction and in 15 eyes (88.2 per cent) with CL correction. A visual acuity of 6/12 or better was seen in four eyes (23.5 per cent) and 10 eyes (58.8 per cent), respectively. Conclusions A RGP CL is one of the methods available for treating refractive abnormalities in traumatic unilateral aphakia. The procedure is effective, safe and tolerable. RGP CLs can correct the vision of patients with irregular corneal astigmatism. The brown-tinted RGP CL can improve the symptoms of photophobia and the cosmetic appearance of brown eyes.
The Effect of RGP on Corneal Curvature

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effect of rigid gas permeable contact lens(RGPCL) on corneal curvature in clinical practice.Method 23 ametropic patients(46 eyes) were fitted with RGP contact lens.Evaluation of it was done. And the period of follow-up ranged 12 moths to observe the changing of corneal curvature.Results The results show that the vertical corneal curvature had been decreased(0.43±0.51)D after 12 months,the difference was significant(P0. 0001);the horizontal corneal curvature had been decreased(0.08±0.23)D after 12 months,the difference was significant (P0.05);the average corneal curvature had been decreased(0.26±0.43)D after 12 months,the difference was significant (P0.0001).Conclusion Wearing RGP can make the corneal curvature flatten.
Comparison of Accommodative Lag in Pre-Adolescent Myopes One Year after Wearing Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses, Orthokeratology Lenses or Spectacles

Abstract:Objective To discuss the differences in accommodative lag between pre-adolescent myopes who wore rigid gas permeable contact lenses (RGPCL), orthokeratology (Ortho-K) lenses or spectacles for a year. Methods Seventy pre-adolescent myopes aged 9 to 14 years were enrolled in the study. Every subject was measured for refraction with MPMVA, corneal curvature radius and corneal topography. Twenty-five subjects were selected to wear RGPCL, 25 subjects were chosen to wear Ortho-K lenses and the other 20 subjects wore spectacles. According to the above measurements and the compliance of children and their parents. Regular after-care visits were made at 3-month in- tervals. Accommodative response (AR) was measured with an open field infrared autorefractor (WAM- 5500) in accommodative stimulus (AS) level of 2～5 D after one year. Accommodative lag and the AR/ AS slope were calculated by statistical methods. Results Fifty-seven subjects completed the experi- ment. The results demonstrate no significant difference in accommodative lag between RGPCL, Ortho- K lens and spectacle wearers for the 2 D AS level (P>0.05), while for the 3 D, 4 D and 5 D AS levels, there were significant differences in accommodative lag among the three groups (F=4.373, P< 0.05;F=5.833, P<0.01;F=6.157, P<0.01), the smallest for Ortho-K, then RGPCL. The AR/AS slope demonstrated the same trend with accommodative lag, but the differences were not significant (P>0.05). Conclusion Compared to spectacles, there is an obvious decrease in accommodative lag in pre-adolescent myopes one year after wearing RGPCL and Ortho-K lenses, which strongly suggests that RGPCL and Ortho-K lenses can control the development of myopia in pre-adoleseents.
Safety of Spectacles for Children's Vision: A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To study safety of children's glasses in rural China, where fear that glasses harm vision is an important barrier for families and policy makers.DESIGN: Exploratory analysis from a cluster-randomized, investigator-masked, controlled trial.METHODS: Among primary schools (n = 252) in western China, children were randomized by school to 1 of 3 interventions: free glasses provided in class, vouchers for free glasses at a local facility, or glasses prescriptions only (Control group). The main outcome of this analysis is uncorrected visual acuity after 8 months, adjusted for baseline acuity.RESULTS: Among 19 934 children randomly selected for screening, 5852 myopic (spherical equivalent refractive error <=-0.5 diopters) eyes cif 3001 children (14.7%, mean age 10.5 years) had VA <= 6/12 without glasses correctable to >6/12 with glasses, and were eligible. Among these, 1903 (32.5%), 1798 (30.7%), and 2151 (36.8%) were randomized to Control, Voucher, and Free Glasses, respectively. Intention-to-treat analyses were performed on all 1831 (96.2%), 1699 (94.5%), and 2007 (93.3%) eyes of children with follow-up in Control, Voucher, and Free Glasses groups. Final visual acuity for eyes of children in the treatment groups (Free Glasses and Voucher) was significantly better than for Control children, adjusting only for baseline visual acuity (difference of 0.023 logMAR units [0.23 vision chart lines, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.43]) or for other baseline factors as well (0.025 logMAR units [0.25 lines, 95% CI 0.04, 0.45]).CONCLUSION: We found no evidence that spectacles promote decline in uncorrected vision with aging among children. Clinical evaluation of rigid gas-permeable con tact lens

Abstract:Objective:To investigate the clinical effects and safety of the Clara Super.O EX RGPCL and the ability of ametropic patients to adapt to the lenses.Methods:36 ametropic patients(72 eyes) were fitted with RGPCL based on their subjective refractions,corneal curvatures and diagnostic fitting. They were followed up after 1 week,1 month and 3 months. The following exams were performed during each visit:corrected visual acuity,A scan examination,endothelium cell condition,corneal topography and slit lamp examination.Results:RGP contact lenses can provide a significant improvement in visual acuity compared to spectacle correction for patients(P=0.005). In some cases,the contrast sensitivity curve was higher with a significant change in corneal curvature,endothelium cell condition,axial length,and corneal thickness. No cases of corneal or conjunctiva complications were found.Conclusion:RGPCL is safe and effective for correcting ametropia. Patients can adapt to lenses and they are superior to spectacles.
Compliance with orthokeratology care among parents of young children in Taiwan

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate compliance with orthokeratology (Ortho-K) care and its influencing factors among parents of 6-13-year-old myopic children in Taiwan. Methods: Parents who are responsible for the care of the Ortho-K lenses of their myopic children were recruited through a closed Facebook peer support group to answer an online compliance questionnaire, including the wear and care behaviours and follow-up visits of Ortho-K. Results: A total of 253 online questionnaires were analysed after excluding those with wrong information. Most participants (89.7%) were mothers and had university-level or higher education (72.3%); 67.6% of them could achieve a score equal or higher than 60% correct rate on knowledge items. In addition, 39.3% of participants had high myopia (spherical equivalent ≦ 6.0 diopters). The mean age at onset of myopia was 7.75 years for children, and 57.4% wore Ortho-K lenses for less than a year. Full compliance rate was 22.8%, as reported by fathers or mothers. The compliance rate for follow-up visits significantly increased with provision of axial length information in follow-up visits, knowledge of axial length changes as an effect of myopia control, and Ortho-K use for less than 6 months. The compliance rate for wear and care was significantly associated with high myopia in one of parents, high education level, early onset of myopia in children, knowledge of Ortho-K and myopia control, and Ortho-K use for less than 6 months. Conclusion: These results indicate the need for a comprehensive education programme for parents with young myopic children to ensure strict adherence to fitting and wear protocols and good follow-up of Ortho-K lenses.
Assessment of dynamic corneal response parameters in Chinese patients of different ages with myopia and orthokeratology lenses using the Corvis ST

Abstract:Objective To investigate the effects of orthokeratology lenses (OK lenses) on corneal biomechanics in subjects of different ages. Methods Fifty subjects with mild to moderate myopia were categorized into three groups (Group I-III) based on their age. Corvis ST was used to collect dynamic corneal response parameters (DCRs) at different follow-up time points. Repeated measures analysis of variance combined with simple effect analysis was used to analyze the changes in DCRs in different groups during the follow-up period. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to analyze the correlations between axial length growth (ALG) at 6 months (ALG-6M) or 12 months (ALG-12M) and sex, baseline spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and DCRs. Results The DCRs changed in all three groups after wearing OK lenses. Most DCRs showed significant differences between baseline and 6 months after wearing OK lenses, while the differences between DCRs at 6 months and 12 months were not statistically significant. No significant differences in DCRs were observed among the three groups at the same follow-up time point. Additionally, at 6 months post-OK lens wear, ALG-6M was significantly correlated with velocity of the corneal apex at the first applanation (A1V-6M) (P = 0.002), Corvis biomechanical index (CBI-6M) (P = 0.004), the maximum amount of corneal movement (DAM-6M) (P = 0.010), deformation amplitude ratio of 2 mm (DAR2-6M) (P = 0.010), and stress–strain index (SSI-6M) (P = 0.038) in Group I. Furthermore, ALG-12M showed significant correlations with SSI-6M (P = 0.031), peak distance at the DAM (PD)-6M (P = 0.037), baseline Ambrósio Relational Thickness to the horizontal profile (P = 0.013) in Group I. Conclusions The majority of DCRs displayed significant changes within the initial 6 months of OK lens wear. Minimal variation in DCRs was observed across different age groups at the same follow-up time point. Certain DCR parameters exhibited correlations with ALG, suggesting their potential in predicting ALG in myopic children undergoing OK lenses correction.

Abstract:Objective To study the compliance of lens wearing and its related factors in patients ongoing orthokeratology.Design Retrospective case investigated research.Participants Clinical data of 470 patients(911 eyes) ongoing orthokeratology from Feb 1999 to Apr 2005.Method Patients with orthokeratology were reviewed to study the compliance of lens wearing as well as to investigate the reasons of doing orthokeratology,onset time,time of cease,corrective method replacing with orthokeratology.Main Outcome Measures Wearing reasons,onset time,cease time,cease reasons,correct method after cease wearing.Results 23% of patients ongoing orthokeratology aimed to increase unaid visual acuity,14% of patients for controlling myopia development,48% for passing special visual exam,15% for reducing the degree of myopia.283 patients with orthokeratology ceased wearing lens,99 patients in 3 months,28 patients in 6 months,42 patients in 1 year,98 patients in 2 years and 16 patients more than 2 years.The corrected methods for myopia replacing orthokeratology including spectacles(181 cases,64.0%),RGP lens(46 cases,16.3%).Conclusion The compliance of wearing orthokeratology lens is effected by reasons of choosing orthokeratology,success of wearing,report of media.
An Investigation into the Causes of Abnormal Waste of Ortho-K Lenses

Abstract:PurposeTo investigate the reasons for wasting orthokeratology (OK) lenses due to breakage or loss, provide more comprehensive guidelines for the clinical care of lenses and minimize time and costs for patients due to excessive broken and lost lenses.MethodsA survey was administered to clinic outpatients who had broken or lost their OK lenses before the regularly scheduled replacement cycle (1–1.5 years). The association between the frequency of OK lens breakage and daily care was assessed using Fisher's exact test and multivariable ordered logistic regression analysis.ResultsA total of 306 valid questionnaires were collected. Among the subjects, 141 were male, and 165 were female, with a mean age of 10.57 ± 2.00 years (range: 6–18 years). In the investigation of the causes of OK lens waste, 81.4% of the patients reported lens breakage, 13.1% lost their lenses, and 5.6% of patients experienced both fragmentation and lens loss. More than half of the patients (52.90%) used incorrect lens cleaning techniques. In further analysis of the relationship between the frequency of OK lens fragmentation within a year and daily care habits, a significant difference was observed between the caregiver (P = 0.03) and whether the lenses were cleaned promptly after removal (P < 0.001). Mothers as daily caregivers of OK lenses had a lower frequency of fragmentation in a year compared to nanny or grandparents (P = 0.014, OR = 0.33, 95% CI = 0.13, 0.80). The failure to clean the lenses according to eye care practitioners' guidance was a risk factor for the frequent breakage of OK lenses (P < 0.001. OR = 5.29, 95% CI = 3.15, 8.89).ConclusionsThe causes of OK lens waste were mainly attributed to caregivers, care practices and some unexpected situations that can be avoided through optometrists' reminders. Regardless of the reasons for noncompliant behavior leading to breakage or loss of OK lenses, all of the complications can probably be addressed by better and more frequent reinforcement of care procedures by practitioners. Better clinical guidance measures and more frequent reminders could prevent a large proportion of abnormal waste of OK lenses.

Abstract:Abstract To examine the refractive lens power (RLP) and lens thickness and their associated factors in children from North-Western China. Children from two schools (primary school and junior high school) in the North-Western Chinese province of Qinghai underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including biometry and cycloplegic refractometry. The RLP was calculated using Bennett’s equation. The study included 596 (77.9%) individuals (mean age: 11.0 ± 2.8 years; range: 6–16 years) with a mean axial length of 23.65 ± 1.24 mm (range: 20.02–27.96 mm). Mean lens thickness was 3.30 ± 0.16 mm (range: 2.85–3.99 mm) and mean RLP was 24.85 ± 1.98D (range: 19.40–32.97). In univariate analysis, girls as compared to boys had a significantly thicker lens and greater RLP, shorter axial length, smaller corneal curvature radius and shorter corneal curvature radius (all P < 0.001). Both sexes did not differ significantly in refractive error ( P = 0.11) and corneal thickness ( P = 0.16). RLP was positively associated with refractive error (correlation coefficient r = 0.33; P < 0.001) and lens thickness (r = 0.62; P < 0.001) and negatively with axial length (r = − 0.70; P < 0.001). In univariate analysis, RLP decreased significantly with older age in the age group from age 6–13, while it plateaued thereafter, with no significant difference between boys and girls. In multivariate regression analysis, a higher RLP was associated with younger age ( P < 0.001; standard regression coefficient β = − 0.07), female sex ( P < 0.001; β = − 0.08), shorter axial length ( P < 0.001; β = − 0.48) and higher lens thickness ( P < 0.001; β = 0.42). In Chinese children, RLP with a mean of 24.85 ± 1.98D decreases with older age, male sex, longer axial length, and thinner lens thickness. Changes in RLP and axial length elongation are important players in the emmetropization and myopization.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the improvement in visual acuity when applying Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses (RGPCL) compared to spectacles in patients after surgical treatment for infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS). A total of 33 patients with nystagmus who had nystagmus surgery from October 2020 to July 2021 were enrolled and all were fitted RGPCL. SPSS statistical software was used to analyze the difference between best-corrected visual acuity with spectacle(BCSVA) and best-corrected visual acuity with RGPCL (BCRVA) in these patients. According to the refractive status of each eye, it was grouped into 2 groups. We study the difference between its BCSVA and BCRVA in different groups. In our study, BCRVA was significantly better than BCSVA in all participants ( P < 0.001), with a strong positive correlation between them (overall r = 0.9333). In Group A (SE ≥ -3.00D, 15 eyes), the difference was significant ( P = 0.0018), while in Group B (SE < -3.00D, 27 eyes), the difference was highly significant ( P < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference in corrective visual acuity between the two groups ( P = 0.5934). The mean difference between BCRVA and BCSVA was − 0.1160 ± 0.1221 in all participants, with similar differences in both groups. These findings suggest that BCRVA and BCSVA are closely related but with significant differences. The results of our study show that for patients who have undergone surgery for INS, RGPCL provide better best-corrected visual acuity compared to spectacle correction. This holds true for patients with high myopia, low myopia, and hyperopia. We recommend the use of RGPCL for refractive correction in patients after surgery for INS.

Abstract:Growing number of contact lens discomfort (CLD) and CL dropout incidence rate afflict the development of CL industry. This article analyzes literatures of past 5 years’ on studies of CLD. It reviews the epidemiology and mechanism of CLD, analyzes different characteristics of CLD resulting from CL material, contact lens care system, and wearers. It sketches the relationship between CLD and ocular surface microenvironment, pointing out that CLD is an incompatible status between CL and the ocular surface microenvironment. Literature analysis also reveals that while high-quality optical effect of rigid lens came at the price of unwelcome initial discomfort, soft lens wearing continuously changes the balance of ocular surface microenvironment, leading to time-dependent discomfort. Different components or formulas of contact lens care systems could be transited by CL into ocular surface and induce CLD. Personal features of wearers such as age, gender, race, and psychological state also could be considered as potential CLD risks.

Abstract:Purpose We assess the prevalence of spectacle wear and the factors associated with compliance among aphakic infants with congenital cataracts who underwent lens extraction in South China. Methods Infants aged 3 months to 3 years were enrolled from among participants in the Childhood Cataract Program of the Chinese Ministry of Health (CCPMOH). The prevalence and potential determinants of spectacle-wearing compliance were identified from interviews with the infants' caregivers. Results Among 192 infant caregivers, the mean (SD) age of the infants was 1.89 (0.50) years, and 57% were males. Compliance was 30.9% in the 3-month- to 1-year-old age group, 78.0% in the 1- to 2-year-old age group, and 87.0% in the 2- to 3-year-old age group. The following two factors were associated with spectacle-wearing compliance: softness of the spectacles frame (β = 1.273, P = 0.002, odds ratio [OR] = 3.6, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.6–8.0) and communication with other caregivers regarding the spectacle-wearing experience (β = −2.955, P = 0.034, OR = 0.1, 95% CI = 0–0.8). Conclusions Compliance with spectacle wear was low during the earlier stage, but increased with time in aphakic infants. However, overall compliance should be improved. Therefore, efficient strategies aimed at improving spectacle-wearing compliance are needed. Translational Relevance These findings reveal the low spectacle-wearing compliance in aphakic infants and support useful information to improve compliance.
