Abstract:An electrochemical method for the decarboxylative silylation of α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids was developed. A variety of alkenylsilanes could be obtained in satisfactory yields and excellent selectivities under external oxidant- and metal-free conditions. Mechanistic studies showed that the formation of the silyl radical was mediated by NHPI, which produces the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reagent phthalimide N-oxyl (PINO) via multiple-site concerted proton-electron transfer (MS-CPET).

Abstract:A synthetic method of copper-catalyzed silylperoxidation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds and conjugated enynes has been developed. The realization of silylperoxidation of the carbon–carbon double bond permits direct access to silicon-containing peroxy products in moderate to good yields. Furthermore, this protocol distinguishes itself by operational simplicity and exhibiting good tolerance of a wide scope of functional groups. This strategy provides an efficient approach to the 1,2-difunctionalization of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds and conjugated enynes.

Abstract:This study presents a solution to the key challenge in modern chemistry of silicones – a functionalization of organosilicon compounds. We have previously shown the potential of the aerobic oxidation for a functionalization of several model p-tolyl-siloxanes to corresponding p-carboxyphenyl-derivatives. Unfortunately, this method has several drawbacks: limited scope, time and energy consumption, as well as scaling problems. We now present their solution. Mild and highly effective liquid-phase [M]-/organo-catalyzed aerobic functionalization of alkylaryl-siloxanes was developed. Reactions proceed at room temperature and atmospheric pressure within 0.5-24 h yielding products in quantitative conversions and high yields. Components of the catalytic system are simple, cheap and commercially available: Co(OAc)2 as earth-abundant metal-catalyst, and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) as an organo-catalyst. A unique combination of solvents with hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) being both co-solvent and process activator (usually in small quantities, 10-25%), provided high efficiency. HFIP allows to overcome scope limitations (most substrates were not oxidized in the absence of HFIP). It also dramatically increases process efficiency minimizing time and energy consumption (reaction time is 0.5-24 h, at r.t. and 1 atm) and solving scalability problems (≥100 g). Method allows to obtain a wide range of both carboxy-, carbonyl- and hydroxy-aryl-containing silanes/siloxanes of linear, hyperbranched, cyclic and cage (polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes or spherosilicates) structure. This approach is applicable to both monomeric and oligomeric and polymeric substrates with various number of functional groups.

Abstract:The iron-catalyzed highly Markovnikovtype selective and enantioselective hydrosilylation of terminal aliphatic alkenes with good functional group tolerance is developed. This operationally simple protocol uses earth-abundant transition metal catalyst, readily available aliphatic alkenes and hydrosilanes to construct valuable chiral organosilanes with better than 99% ee in most cases. The chiral aliphatic alkan-2-ol and chiral dihydroxysilane as an analogue of ketone could be efficiently synthesized via further derivatization of chiral organosilanes without any racemization.

Abstract:A mechanistically distinctive visible‐light‐promoted metal‐free aerobic oxidation of alkenyl silanes with alcohols was disclosed to efficiently construct α‐alkoxy ketones under mild conditions. The primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols could be used as reactants. The protocol could be carried out on a gram‐scale. Various derivatizations of products could be conducted. Mechanistic studies indicated the reaction was initiated by single‐electron oxidation of the alkenyl silanes, rather than radical addition to alkenyl silanes. Abstract:The novel efficient procedure has been developed for the oxathioacetalization of carbonyl compounds and 2-mercaptoethanol at room temperature under solvent-free condition. The results showed that the novel multi-SO 3 H functionalized ionic liquid was very efficient for the reactions with the good to excellent yields in short time. Operational simplicity, without need of any solvent, room temperature, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, applicability to large-scale reactions, reusability and chemoselectivity are the key features of this methodology.

Abstract:An aerobic oxidation of aldehydes towards carboxylic acids in MeCN using 1 atm of pure oxygen or oxygen in air as the oxidant and a catalytic amount of single component catalyst, Fe(NO3)(3)9H(2)O, has been developed. Carboxylic acids with different synthetically useful functional groups were obtained at room temperature. Two mechanistic pathways have been proposed based on isotopic labeling, NMR monitoring, and control experiments. The practicality of this reaction has been demonstrated by conducting several 50 mmol-scale reactions using pure oxygen or an air-flow of similar to 30 mL/min.

Abstract:Oxidation of silanes into silanols using water/air has attracted considerable attention. The known methods with no exception required a metal catalyst. Herein we report the first metal-free method: 2 mol% Rose Bengal as the catalyst, air(O2) as the oxidant, water as the additive and under visible light irradiation. While this method produces various silanols in a simple, costeffective, efficient(92%–99% yields) and scalable fashion, its reaction mechanism is very different than the reported ones associated with metal catalysis.

Abstract:To date, the iron-catalyzed construction of C-heteroatom bonds has been less developed due to the difficulty of transmetalation with heteroatom anions and the sluggish reductive elimination. Herein we report an iron-catalyzed method for the silylation of (hetero)aromatic chlorides. It features high efficiency, a broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group compatibility. Moreover, this protocol enables the late-stage silylation of some pharmaceuticals, thus providing an excellent method to access valuable intermediates in medicinal chemistry.

Abstract:Sulfur-containing compounds are commonly present in both natural and synthetic bioactive molecules. The ability to construct C−S bond using inexpensive and easily accessible raw materials under mild conditions is an area of significant interest in organic synthesis. In this study, we introduce a novel photo-induced iron-catalyzed strategy that facilitates the transformation of alkyl and heteroaryl carboxylic acids into their respective thioether products. Furthermore, our method also enables the site-selective synthesis of thioethers and sulfoxides from unreactive hydrocarbons using N2 or air reaction atmosphere. The procedure is operationally simple and readily scalable, and provides access to high-value sulfur-containing compounds from simple raw materials in one step.

Abstract:Silanols are utilized extensively in the silicone industry both as intermediates and in formulated products where subsequent condensation is desired, such as moisture-cured sealants. More recently, silanols have attracted attention as versatile reagents in chemical synthesis. The development of selective routes to silanols is of longstanding interest and often proceeds via the oxidation or hydrolysis of hydrosilanes using transition-metal catalysts or stoichiometric oxidants. Transition-metal solutions often require costly catalysts that must be removed or recycled, while previously disclosed stoichiometric oxidants suffer from manufacturing, handling, and environmental issues that preclude their widespread adoption. In contrast, peracetic acid has found broad applications in water treatment, sterilization, and disinfection as a more sustainable alternative. Here, we report that peracetic acid is also an efficient and selective oxidant for a number of alkyl and aryl silanes as well as small molecule and polymeric hydrosilane-functional siloxanes. Computational modeling was also utilized to gain insight into the catalytic mechanism and observe the relative reactivities of different substrates and common oxidants.

Abstract:Oxidation from alcohols to carboxylic acids, a class of essential chemicals in daily life, academic laboratories, and industry, is a fundamental reaction, usually using at least a stoichiometric amount of an expensive and toxic oxidant. Here, an efficient and practical sustainable oxidation technology of alcohols to carboxylic acids using pure O2 or even O2 in air as the oxidant has been developed: utilizing a catalytic amount each of Fe(NO3)3·9H2O/TEMPO/MCl, a series of carboxylic acids were obtained from alcohols (also aldehydes) in high yields at room temperature. A 55 g-scale reaction was demonstrated using air. As a synthetic application, the first total synthesis of a naturally occurring allene, i.e., phlomic acid, was accomplished.

Abstract:Metal-free aerobic oxidation of aryl sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones has been developed in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes with excellent selectivity and yields. The reaction proceeded under mild conditions with the catalysis of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). Control experiments indicated that the reaction underwent a free radical pathway with the acylperoxyl radicals generated from aldehydes in situ as the key intermediates. The aromatic aldehydes were less efficient in the sulfide oxidation, which might be explained by the fact that the aromatic ring dispersed the electrons of free radicals and thus weakened the attacking ability of peroxy free radicals.

Abstract:A cobalt-catalyzed intramolecular silylperoxidation reaction was developed that allows for the conversion of unsaturated diisopropylsilyl ethers to 3-sila-1,2,4-trioxepanes. Reduction of the peroxide unit of the 3-sila-1,2,4-trioxepane yields six-membered ring diisopropylsilylene acetals.

Abstract:The first example of a heterogeneous iron(III)-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of aldehydes in water was developed. This method utilizes 1 atmosphere of oxygen as the sole oxidant, proceeds under extremely mild aqueous conditions, and covers a wide range of various functionalized aldehydes. Chromatography is generally not necessary for product purification. Its operational simplicity, gram-scale oxidation, and the ability to successively reuse the catalyst, make this new methodology environmentally benign and cost effective. The generality of this methodology gives it the potential to be used on an industrial scale.

Abstract:We present an efficient palladium‐catalyzed strategy that ingeniously realizes dehydrogenative cross‐coupling reactions between silanes and an oxygen‐containing functional groups (alcohols, phenols, and water) to generate the corresponding silyl ethers and silanols in moderate to high yields with broad substrate scope.
