Efficient and Sustainable Strategy for Recycling of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Thermoset Composite Waste at Ambient Pressure

Abstract:The recycling of advanced carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composite waste is a significantly challenging task owing to its thermosetting characteristics. In this study, an innovative recycling strategy was developed for carbon fiber-reinforced bismaleimide (CF/BMI) composite waste under mild conditions. The composite waste underwent complete decomposition in diethylenetriamine solvent under the optimum treatment conditions (4 h at 180 C and ambient pressure). In the degradation process, the C-N-C bonds of the imide rings in the BMI polymer were broken. The BMI polymer was broken down into oligomers containing reactive amide and amine groups, which became completely soluble. The recycled CFs exhibited a clean surface and tensile properties nearly the same as those of virgin CFs. Subsequently, the degraded BMI oligomers (DBOs) and residual solvent were easily separated by distillation under reduced pressure and mild temperatures (110-120 degree celsius). The resulting DBOs could be combined with epoxy resins to fabricate new materials, which achieved optimal mechanical and thermomechanical properties when prepared with 10 wt% DBOs. The recovered high-purity solvent could be reused for the next round of composite recycling. This study presents a simple paradigm for the highly efficient, sustainable, and environmentally friendly recycling of industrial CF/BMI composite waste.

Abstract:Thermosetting polymers, a large class of polymers featured with excellent properties, have been widely used and played an irreplaceable role in our life. Nevertheless, they are arduous to be recycled or reused on account of their permanently cross-linked networks, and the current main recycle approaches including energy recovery through incineration, utilization as fillers after mechanically grinding, and pyrolysis only reclaim a small part value of thermosetting polymers and their downstream materials. In this minireview, we provide an overview of efforts on upcycling of thermosetting polymers in recent years. The research progress of physical upcycling, carbonization upcycling, solvolysis upcycling and vitrimerization upcycling of thermosets waste to high-value materials including oil-water separation materials, 3D printable materials, functional carbon materials (supercapacitors, photothermal conversion materials, catalytic materials), additives, emulsifiers, biolubricants, vitrimers, etc. will be summarized and discussed. The perspectives of the future development of upcycling art of thermosets will also be provided.

Mechanochemistry: An Efficient Way to Recycle Thermoset Polyurethanes

Abstract:A recycling process of waste thermosetting polyurethane plastics was proposed based on the mechanochemical method, aiming at the three-dimensional network cross-linking structure of thermosetting polyurethane. Orthogonal experimental design was adopted to select three factors of crushing speed, crushing time, and feed amount to determine the best crushing parameters. Then, the waste polyurethane insulation boards were crushed and degraded by the mechanism of regenerative forming with the adjustable speed test machine. Accordingly, the recycled powder was obtained. Finally, nine kinds of polyurethane recycled composite plates were prepared by hot pressing process. The degradation effect of thermosetting polyurethane was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, the mechanical properties and thermal insulation properties of recycled composite plates were tested and analyzed. The results show that the network cross-linking molecular structure of waste thermosetting polyurethane plastics is destroyed by the effect of mechanochemical action, and methyl and aldehyde groups are decomposed. Therefore, a recycled powder with strong reactivity and plasticity is generated, which improves the activity regeneration ability. After adding thermoplastic resin, the mechanical properties and formability of recycled composite plates are enhanced, with maximum tensile strength up to 9.913 MPa. Correspondingly, the thermal insulation performance of plates is reduced. However, the minimum thermal conductivity can also reach 0.0555 W/m·K. This study provides an effective method for the recycling of thermosetting polyurethane plastics.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have a critical role in functional materials engineering; however, their efficient recycling, durable use, and multifunctional integration remain a huge challenge for sustainable development. Herein, we report multifunctional biophenolic nanospheres that exploit stimuli-responsive reversible assembly based on multiple directional interactions, allowing for closed-loop recycling and durability, even in complex systems of thermosets. The biobased nanospheres can serve long-term in various environments (high temperature, water, acid, surfactant solutions, etc.). By matching disassembly conditions, the nanospheres can be circularly dissociated into precursors, removed from application systems, reassembled, and reused sustainably. The corresponding mechanism is illustrated by experimental characterization and theoretical simulation. We further demonstrate the recycling and durable multifunctional effects of the nanospheres in thermoset foams. The reproducible nanospheres with diverse radical scavenging abilities endow nanocomposites with excellent mechanical enhancement, aging resistance, and durable flame retardancy. This study paves the way for tackling the pressing issue of high-value functional nanomaterial sustainability.

Abstract:This work proposes a mechanochemical recycling strategy for highly cross‐linked thermosets via the synergy of mechanics and chemistry, which is economic‐friendly and pollution‐free. The findings indicate that the recycled thermosets demonstrate a remarkable recovery, as evidenced by the restoration of their Young's modulus, ultimate strength, peak strain, impact and bending properties, reaching ≈100% of the values observed in the as‐synthesized thermosets. Highly cross‐linked thermosets possess superior mechanical properties and have found broad applications in engineering. However, due to the dense cross‐links, it is extremely challenging to recycle highly cross‐linked thermosets, causing serious environmental and sustainable concerns. Herein, a mechanochemical recycling strategy is proposed for highly cross‐linked thermosets via the synergy of mechanics and chemistry, which is economic‐friendly and pollution‐free. To demonstrate the strategy, diverse metal‐complex catalysts are employed to recycle highly cross‐linked epoxy incorporated with switchable covalent bonds at certain pressure, temperature, and time. The effect of each catalyst on the efficiency of recycling is evaluated, which follows a descending order: Zr4+ > Mn3+ > Co3+ > Fe3+ > Co2+ > Zn2+ > OTi4+ > Ni2+. The results show that the mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus, ultimate strength, peak strain, impact strength, flexural modulus and strength, as well as thermal stability of the recycled samples are almost identical to those of as‐synthesized ones. The effectiveness of the method is further confirmed via micromorphology.

Abstract:Objective: To explore feasible solutions to realize the recycling of waste materials for sustainable application in response to the existing problem of idle accumulation of large quantities of waste textile fabrics and ceramic residues. Methods: Through the experimental method, waste porcelain powder was substituted for some of the ridged raw materials in the traditional ceramic formula to make a slurry, and then mixed with waste fabrics to be fired into a new ceramic material. Then its characteristics were recorded, summarized, explored, and analyzed to explore the unique value of the material. Results: The experiments found that the mixing of the waste materials produced a good chemical reaction. The waste ceramic powder can enhance the flexural strength of the new material, reduce the deformation rate, and make the new material's performance more stable. Waste fabrics can make the new materials enjoy the advantages of easy production, good light transmittance, and lightweight. Conclusion: This research lays a technical foundation for future entry into the design market. This contributes to the recycling of waste fabrics and ceramic residues in a sustainable way.

Abstract:The sustainable production of adaptive, recyclable and imine-based dynamic covalent thermosetting resins presents an opportunity for polymer scientists to address the prevalent environmental and energy concerns associated with current petroleum-based plastics. However, the imine-based dynamic covalent thermosetting resins (DCTR) easily decompose in the presence of water, and which can weak mechanical properties in imine-based polymers. In this study, we designed oxime-imine dynamic covalent thermosetting resins that are stable in the presence of water and exhibit good mechanical properties. In the presence of one kind of amino group catalyst, the oxime-imine dynamic covalent thermosetting resins were able to be completely recycled. Additionally, these well-designed oxime-imine dynamic covalent thermosetting resins have distinguished mechanical properties, high glass transition temperatures (166 °C), and good thermal stabilities. Taken together, this work offers a sustainable solution for the design and manufacture of high-value degradable materials intended for applications in which recyclability and reusability are indispensable.

Abstract:Vitrimers, a new generation of polymeric materials, have been widely investigated to resolve the intersection of thermoplastics and thermosets, relying on the exchange reactions in networks. However, it is still a challenge to develop multi-functional vitrimer materials. Herein, multi-functional epoxy vitrimers that exhibited controllable dynamic properties, multiple-stimuli response, crack-healing and fracture-welding were prepared by introducing Fe3O4 nanoparticles into the networks of dual dynamic epoxy vitrimers. It was revealed that the typical dynamic parameters of vitrimer including the characteristic relaxation time (τ), activation energy (Ea), Arrhenius prefactor (τ0) and topology freezing transition temperature (Tv) could be readily adjusted in the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers. Moreover, the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers were simultaneously responsive to temperature, near infrared and magnetic field, while they could be driven by magnets, heated by near infrared and healed or welded by heating. Upon heating or near infrared, the cracks in samples could be successfully healed. Besides, by the cooperation of heating and magnet or near infrared and magnet, the multi-functional epoxy vitrimers were able to achieve non-touch welding of factures. These multi-functional epoxy vitrimers might have potential application in improving the reliability and extending the lifetime of polymeric materials. Meanwhile, the facile way to functionalize the epoxy vitrimers is estimated to be suitable for other vitrimer materials.

Abstract:In polymer science and industry, the important role of thermosetting resin is well-recognized. However, most thermosets suffer from the overdependence on petroleum resource and in addition are linked to environmental concerns. The development of sustainable thermosetting resins thus has become an objective of contemporary research. Addressing this need generally requires renewable feedstocks, satisfied comprehensive properties, and long service life or recyclability. Herein, a systematic overview regarding recent advances in sustainable thermosetting resins is provided. Firstly, the origins and access of bio-based platform compounds successfully applied in the bio-based thermosetting resins are being discussed. Subsequently, the synthesis, structure-property relationships, and methodologies for the functionalization of three typical bio-based thermosets, including benzoxazine, epoxy resin and unsaturated polyester, are being reviewed. Finally, strategies for the recycling of bio-based thermoset waste products are being presented. The objective of this work is not only to summarize the recent progress on sustainable thermosets, but also help us understand them more deeply and widely in a short time, so as to promote their faster development.

Upcycling of plastic wastes and biomass to mechanically robust yet recyclable energy-harvesting materials

Abstract:Plastic pollution is a growing global concern. From the perspective of decarbonization throughout entire lifecycle, the development of mechanically robust yet recyclable materials from sustainable building blocks is highly desirable but remains challenging. Here, we propose a supramolecular in situ assembly strategy to fabricate sustainable materials by integrating reclaimed glass fiber fabric (RGFF, from wind turbine blades wastes) and bio-based epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) vitrimer. The key principle of the design is the construction of supramolecular interface with densely aggregated hydrogen bonds between the resin residual on RGFF and ESO vitrimer, which facilitates the in situ assembly process to form a homogeneous and dense cartilage-like interwoven structure. The resulted materials show not only excellent mechanical properties during service (tensile strength of 152.9 MPa and toughness of 33.9 MJ m −3 ), but also desirable recyclability in terms of end-of-life options. Furthermore, the favorable dielectric modulation (promote 11.6 times in surface potential) allows the materials to be used in efficient and durable triboelectric energy harvesting. This upcycling strategy to integrate plastic wastes with biomass exhibits 44 %-49 % reduction in carbon footprint, opening up an avenue for sustainable materials as promising alternatives to petrochemical plastics.

Abstract:Abstract Degradation and reprocessing of thermoset polymers have long been intractable challenges to meet a sustainable future. Star strategies via dynamic cross‐linking hydrogen bonds and/or covalent bonds can afford reprocessable thermosets, but often at the cost of properties or even their functions. Herein, a simple strategy coined as hyperbranched dynamic crosslinking networks (HDCNs) toward in‐practice engineering a petroleum‐based epoxy thermoset into degradable, reconfigurable, and multifunctional vitrimer is provided. The special characteristics of HDCNs involve spatially topological crosslinks for solvent adaption and multi‐dynamic linkages for reversible behaviors. The resulting vitrimer displays mild room‐temperature degradation to dimethylacetamide and can realize the cycling of carbon fiber and epoxy powder from composite. Besides, they have supra toughness and high flexural modulus, high transparency as well as fire‐retardancy surpassing their original thermoset. Notably, it is noted in a chance‐following that ethanol molecule can induce the reconstruction of vitrimer network by ester‐exchange, converting a stiff vitrimer into elastomeric feature, and such material records an ultrahigh modulus (5.45 GPa) at −150 °C for their ultralow‐temperature condition uses. This is shaping up to be a potentially sustainable advanced material to address the post‐consumer thermoset waste, and also provide a newly crosslinked mode for the designs of high‐performance polymer.

Abstract:Simultaneously attaining high strength and toughness has been a significant challenge in designing thermoplastic elastomers, especially biodegradable ones. In this context, we present a class of biodegradable elastomers based on multiblock copolyesters that afford extraordinary strength, toughness, and low-strain resilience despite expedient chemical synthesis and sample processing. With the incorporation of the semi-crystalline soft block and the judicious selection of block periodicity, the thermoplastic materials feature low quiescent crystallinity ("reserve") albeit with vast potential for strain-induced crystallization ("release"), resulting in their significantly enhanced ultimate strength and energy-dissipating capabilities. Moreover, a breadth of mechanical responses of the materials – from reinforced elastomers to shape-memory materials to toughened thermoplastics – can be achieved by orthogonal variation of segment lengths and ratios. This work and the "reserve-release" crystallization strategy herein highlight the double crystalline multiblock chain architecture as a potential avenue towards reconciling the strength-toughness trade-off in thermoplastic elastomers and can possibly be extended to other biodegradable building blocks to deliver functional materials with diverse mechanical performances.

Abstract:Plastic has now become a contradiction between civilization and pollution that human society has to resolve. The recycling of thermosetting plastics in waste plastics is a huge challenge since they are difficult to remold like thermoplastic plastics due to their high crosslinking density. Here, a new strategy was developed to achieve multicycling of anhydride-cured epoxy thermosets. The process consisted of mild and high-efficiency alcoholysis catalyzed by potassium phosphate/low-boiling alcohol system, and subsequent fast hydrolysis to obtain degradation products rich of carboxyl groups. The degradation products were reused as curing agent to prepare new anhydride-cured epoxy thermosets without sacrifice of high strength and stability. Moreover, the new epoxy thermosets could still be repeatedly recycled using the same protocol. The insolubility of potassium phosphate in ethanol at room temperature made the separation and reuse of the catalyst more convenient. The use of low-boiling alcohol not only allowed high-efficiency degradation but also enabled easy separation from the degradation products. The excellent degradation performance was attributed to the improved swelling of the thermoset and the increased solubility of potassium phosphate induced by small amounts of water in the alcohol. This research provides a recycling method that can reintegrate thermoset waste plastics into remodeling ones under the background of circular economy.

Rapidly reprocessable, degradable epoxy vitrimer and recyclable carbon fiber reinforced thermoset composites relied on high contents of exchangeable aromatic disulfide crosslinks

Abstract:With large quantities of waste carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites generated, the development of recycling routes for CFRP composites have been driven by both environmental and economic factors. Vitrimer materials provide exciting opportunities to recycle thermosets and CFRP composites, since they can be thermally reprocessed without losing their permanently cross-linked networks. However, the poor mechanical properties, additional catalyst and time-consuming recycling process still limit their applications. Herein, the authors proposed an epoxy vitrimer with high contents of exchangeable aromatic disulfide crosslinks to overcome these limitations. This epoxy vitrimer exhibited outstanding properties with the glass transition temperature (Tg) of 147 oC and the tensile strength of 63.1 MPa. Upon heating, it released the stress from deformation more rapidly without any catalyst, resulting from the high contents of disulfide crosslinks in the network. Meanwhile, the networks exhibited excellent reprocessability and were more readily degraded by thiols. Moreover, this epoxy was applied as matrix to prepare recyclable CFRP composites. By dissolving the epoxy matrix efficiently, the carbon fibers embedded were recycled rapidly and they still exhibited outstanding mechanical properties when being reused to form CFRP composites. Results from this study may promote the wide development of cost-efficient recyclable composites in automotive, wind power and aeronautical industries.
A Supramolecular Approach from Renewable Biomass to Functional Materials

Abstract:The rational transformation and utilization of biomass have received increasing attentions, because of the great importance of biomass in sustainable development and green economy. In this study, we used a supramolecular approach to convert biomass into functional materials. Six biomass raw materials with distinct chemical structures and physical properties were copolymerized with thioctic acid (TA) to afford poly[TA-biomass]s. The solvent-free copolymerization leads to the convenient and quantitative fabrication of biomass-based versatile materials. The non-covalent bonding and reversible solid-liquid transitions in poly[TA-biomass]s endow them with diversified features, including thermal processability, 3D printing, wet and dry adhesion, recyclability, impact resistance, and antimicrobial activity. Benefiting from their good biocompatibility and nontoxicity, these biomass-based materials are promising candidates for biological applications.

Novel Application of Mechanochemistry in Waste Epoxy Recycling via Solid-State Shear Milling

Abstract:Epoxy resin is one of the most popular thermosetting resins and has been widely used in many fields for its excellent performance. However, the stable crosslinking structure of waste epoxy (WEP) caused poor interfacial compatibility, which makes it very difficult to be recycled. This paper reported a novel method for recycling the waste epoxy through partial de-crosslinking and re-crosslinking processes via solid-state shear milling (S3M). The waste epoxy was effectively pulverized into an ultrafine powder about 17 μm and the crosslinking density decreased from 3.43 × 10–3 to 2.69 × 10–3 mol/mL. The C–N, C–C, and C–O–C bonds in the WEP were broken by the mechanochemical action and many hydroxyl and amino groups were formed on the surface of the WEP powder, which could react with the epoxy and curing agent to form the new crosslinking network. The interface strength between the WEP powder and epoxy (EP) resin matrix was improved greatly and there were no voids that could be observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after the re-crosslinking process. The maximum tensile strength, flexural strength, and non-notched impact strength of WEP/EP composites reached up to 42.2 MPa, 73.2 MPa, and 8.8 kJ/m2, which means 62, 41, and 109% enhancement, respectively. Abstract:Chemcycling of waste plastics seeks high-efficiency degradation and high utilization of degradation products . However, it is difficult to achieve such a goal for epoxy thermosets due to their dense network structure and lack of active groups in degradation products. In most cases, only a small fraction of the degradation products can be used to reconstruct new epoxy thermosets after waste epoxy thermosets are degraded which accounts for a very low proportion in the new epoxy thermoset. Herein, we report a chemical upcycling of waste anhydride-cured epoxy thermosets to new epoxy thermosets based on the degradation-modification-reconstruction strategy. The epoxy thermoset is degraded using a simple and efficient alkali/alcohol system with the yields of about 90 % of two degradation products. The two degradation products are further modified into new epoxy monomer and curing agent respectively. All the modified products are directly used to prepare new epoxy thermosets with high performance without additional epoxy monomer or curing agent added. This work realizes the full utilization of the degradation products of waste epoxy thermoset, and the degradation products account for more than 80 % of the new epoxy thermoset. Carbon footprint and economic calculations show that the strategy is environmental-friendly and cost efficient.

Abstract:Though upcycling post-consumer polymers into high-value materials is appealing, it faces challenges including complex, costly processes and difficulties to achieve a circular lifecycle. To address these issues, we have developed a novel approach that involves designing a unique bi-continuous phase morphology with selective distribution of the conductive fillers in the semi-crystalline polymer phase . As a result, these composites exhibited excellent thermal conductivity (7.07 W m −1 ·K −1 ) and stable environmental longevity (thermal aging and 500 h UV irradiation) and can be upcycled as effective flame retardant (vertical combustion grade V-0) and smoke suppressed materials (smoke density grade 64.1) after their service life as a thermal conductive material has ended. Rather than being discarded or undergo molecular upcycling, they could be straightforwardly repurposed through melt processing and even displayed better processability, suggesting a one-pot but effective upcycle strategy for polymeric materials.
