Abstract:Twinning is commonly activated in plastic deformation of low stacking-fault face-centered cubic (Fcc) metals but rarely found in body-centered cubic (Bcc) metals under room temperature and slow strain rates. Here, by conducting in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) at atomic scale, we discover that, in stark contrast to those in most Fcc metals, a majority of deformation twins in Bcc metals are unstable and undergo spontaneously detwinning upon unloading. Such unexpected instability of Bcc twins is found to be closely related to the prevalence of the inclined twin boundaries-a peculiar structure where twin boundaries are not parallel to the twinning plane, and the degree of instability is in direct proportion to the fraction of the inclined twin boundary. This work provides significant insights into the structure and stability of deformation twins in Bcc metals.

Abstract:Dislocation-twin interactions critically control the plastic deformation and ultrahigh strength of nanotwinned metals. Here, we report a strong twin-thickness dependence of dislocation-twin interaction mechanisms from the tensile deformation of face-centered cubic metallic nanocrystals by in situ nanomechanical testing. Direct observations at atomic scale reveal that the predominant dislocation-twin interaction abruptly changes from dislocation transmission on the {111} slip planes to the unusual (100) slip plane of the twin, when the twin thickness is smaller than 4 layers. Using atomistic simulations, we find that the energy barrier for {100} slip transmission mechanism gradually decreases, with decreasing twin thickness, below the energy level required for normal (111) slip transmission, which remains identical for all twin sizes. Our in situ observations and simulations provide atomistic insights into a fundamentally new mechanism of plasticity in nanotwinned metals, down to the lowest twin size limit.

Abstract:Dislocation interactions with twin boundary (TB) have been well-established in nanotwinned metals. Penta-twins, as an extreme of crystal twinning, are tacitly assumed to be more effective at blocking dislocation motions than conventional single or coplanar nanotwins. However, the mechanism underlying the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins remains largely unclear. Here, by combining in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) nanomechanical testing and atomistic simulations, we rationalize the fundamental interactions between dislocations and penta-twins in Au nanocrystals. Our results reveal that the interactions between dislocations and penta-twins show some similar behaviors to the ones in the cases of coplanar nanotwins, including dislocation impedance at TBs, cross-slip into the twinning plane and transmission across the TB. In addition, penta-twins also exhibit some unique behaviors during dislocation interactions, including multiple cross-slip, dislocation-induced core dissociation and climb-induced annihilation/absorption at the penta-twin core. These findings enhance our mechanistic understanding of dislocation behaviors in penta-twins, shedding light on the accessible design of high-performance nanomaterials with multi-twinned nanostructures.

Abstract:The competition between dislocation slip and deformation twinning in body-centered cubic (BCC) nanocrystals can be strongly influenced by the deformation conditions. In this study, we investigate the deformation of [112]-oriented BCC tungsten nanowires under different loading modes. It shows that dislocation plasticity is a predominant deformation mode under uniaxial tension, while deformation twinning prevails when non-uniaxial stress is applied. The interfaces of bending-induced twinning are composed of numerous stepwise {112} twin boundaries. These findings shed light on the deformation mechanism of BCC nanocrystals under complex loading conditions.

Abstract:Twin–twin intersections are often observed in face-centered cubic (FCC) metallic nanostructures, which have important contributions to the plastic deformation and strengthening of FCC metals with low stacking fault energies. However, a deep insight into the underlying mechanism involved in the formation and evolution of twin–twin intersections remains largely lacking, especially in experiments. Here, by conducting the in situ straining experiments under high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), we directly visualize the dynamic evolution of a twin–twin intersection in Au nanowire at the nanoscale. It shows that dislocations in the incoming twin can either glide onto or transmit across the barrier twin via dislocation interaction with the twin boundary, resulting in the twin–twin intersection. Dynamic twinning and de-twinning of the twin–twin intersection govern the whole deformation of the nanowire. These findings reveal the dynamic behaviors of twin–twin intersection under mechanical loading, which benefits further exploration of FCC metals and engineering alloys with twin–twin intersection structures.
In Situ TEM Study on the Nanomechanical Behaviors of Metallic Nanowires

Abstract:In this dissertation, the relationships between structure-mechanical properties-deformation mechanisms in face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) metallic nanowires have been studied using in situ TEM nanomechanical testing. It is well known that smaller is stronger and the widely-observed size effect is believed to arise from dislocation interactions inside nanocrystals. However, the interaction mechanisms in small-volume nanocrystals remain unexplored. Here, it was found that surface-nucleated dislocations can strongly interact inside the confined volume of Au nanowires, which led to a new type of dislocation-originated stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT), at variance to the widely-believed vacancy-originated SFT. The atomic-scale processes of nucleation, migration and annihilation of dislocation-originated SFT were revealed, shedding new light onto the strain hardening and size effect in small-volume materials. Although nanoscale twinning is an effective mean to enhance the strength of metals, twin-size effect on the deformation and failure of nanotwinned metals remains largely unexplored, especially at the minimum twin size. Here, a new type of size effect in nanotwinned Au nanowires is presented. As twin size reaches the angstrom-scale, Au nanowires exhibit a remarkable ductile-to-brittle transition that is governed by the heterogeneous-to-homogeneous dislocation nucleation transition. Quantitative measurements show that approaching such a nanotwin size limit gives rise to the ultra-high strength in Au nanowires, close to the ideal strength limit of perfect Au. Twinning is a fundamental deformation mode that competes against dislocation slip in crystals. At the nanoscale, higher stresses are required for plastic deformation than that in bulk, which favors twinning over dislocation slip. Indeed, deformation twinning has been well-documented in FCC nanocrystals. However, it remains unexplored in BCC nanostructures. Here, it shows that twinning is the dominant deformation mode in BCC-tungsten nanocrystals. A competition between twinning and dislocation slip occurs when changing the loading orientations, attributed to the defect growth controlled plasticity in BCC nanocrystals. Several important commonalities and differences in FCC and BCC nanocrystals deforming at nanoscale are further proposed. The results from this dissertation advance fundamental understanding of plastic deformation in a broad class of metals and alloys, and are of technological importance for degradation control and future design of ultra-strength nanomaterials.
Discrete Twinning Dynamics and Size-Dependent Dislocation-to Twin Transition in Body-Centred Cubic Tungsten

Abstract:Body-centred cubic（BCC） metals are known to have unstable intrinsic stacking faults and high resistance to deformation twinning, which can strongly influence their twinning behaviour. Though twinning mechanisms of BCC metals have been investigated for more than 60 years, the atomistic level dynamics of twinning remains under debate, especially regarding its impact on competition between twinning and slip. Here, we investigate the atomistic level dynamics of twinning in BCC tungsten（W） nanowires using in situ nanomechanical testing. Quantitative experimental studies directly visualize that deformation twins in W nanowires have a minimum size of six-layers and grow in increments of approximately three-layers at a time, in contrast to the layer-by-layer growth of deformation twins in face-centred cubic metals. These unique twinning dynamics induces a strong competition with ordinary dislocation slip,as exhibited by a size-dependent dislocation-to-twin transition in W nanowires, with a transition size of ～40 nm. Our work provides physical insight into the dynamics of twinning at the atomic level, as well as a size-dependent dislocation-twinning competition, which have important implications for the plastic deformation in a broad class of BCC metals and alloys.
In situ atomic scale mechanisms of strain-induced twin boundary shear to high angle grain boundary in nanocrystalline Pt

Abstract:Twin boundary can both strengthen and soften nanocrystalline metals and has been an important path for improving the strength and ductility of nano materials. Here, using in-lab developed double-tilt tensile stage in the transmission electron microscope, the atomic scale twin boundary shearing process was in situ observed in a twin-structured nanocrystalline Pt. It was revealed that the twin boundary shear was resulted from partial dislocation emissions on the intersected {111} planes, which accommodate as large as 47% shear strain. It is uncovered that the partial dislocations nucleated and glided on the two intersecting {111} slip planes lead to a transition of the original <110> symmetric tilt ∑3/(111) coherent twin boundary into a <110> symmetric tilt ∑9/(114) high angle grain boundary. These results provide insight of twin boundary strengthening mechanisms for accommodating plasticity strains in nanocrystalline metals.

Abstract:The orientation between twin boundary (TB) and loading direction may play an intriguing role in the deformation behaviors of twinned metallic materials. In this aspect, its essential effect on the high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanocrystals is elusive. Attention herein is focused on the atomicscaled deformation mechanisms and fracture behaviors of HEA nanocrystals containing twins of even smaller spacings via a combined approach of in situ tensile tests inside a high-resolution transmission electron microscope and molecular dynamics simulations. The results indicate that the deformation mechanisms (especially dislocation activities) of HEA nanocrystals depend on the load orientation with respect to TBs. Because of the low activation energy and uneven local composition of HEA, the surface acts as an effective dislocation source and, together with Schmid factor, dominate the activated dislocation slip system. The load orientation-dependent TB-dislocation interactions may transform the type of fracture from semi-brittle to ductile. Our results indicate that the deformation mechanisms and the types of fracture in HEA nanocrystals can be controlled by changing the orientation. The nanotwinned materials attract extensive attention because of their exceptional combination of high strength and ductility. The deep understanding of the role of twin will bring advances to design new strong and ductile materials. The orientation between twin boundary (TB) and loading direction plays an intriguing role in the deformation behaviors. In this work, we use a novel method, in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM) melting, to produce nanotwin with special load/TB orientation. The strong load/TB orientation dependences of deformation mechanisms and fracture modes are revealed via in situ TEM strain and molecular dynamics simulations. The free surface together with Schmid factor dominate the activated dislocation slip system. This work points out an alternative route in designing advanced twin-inducedplasticity materials by controlling load/TB orientations.

Abstract:Abstract Twinning is an essential mode of plastic deformation for achieving superior strength and ductility in metallic nanostructures. It has been generally believed that twinning-induced plasticity in body-centered cubic (BCC) metals is controlled by twin nucleation, but facilitated by rapid twin growth once the nucleation energy barrier is overcome. By performing in situ atomic-scale transmission electron microscopy straining experiments and atomistic simulations, we find that deformation twinning in BCC Ta nanocrystals larger than 15 nm in diameter proceeds by reluctant twin growth, resulting from slow advancement of twinning partials along the boundaries of finite-sized twin structures. In contrast, reluctant twin growth can be obviated by reducing the nanocrystal diameter to below 15 nm. As a result, the nucleated twin structure penetrates quickly through the cross section of nanocrystals, enabling fast twin growth via facile migration of twin boundaries leading to large uniform plastic deformation. The present work reveals a size-dependent transition in the nucleation- and growth-controlled twinning mechanism in BCC metals, and provides insights for exploiting twinning-induced plasticity and breaking strength-ductility limits in nanostructured BCC metals.

Abstract:Twinning is a fundamental deformation mode that competes against dislocation slip in crystalline solids. In metallic nanostructures, plastic deformation requires higher stresses than those needed in their bulk counterparts, resulting in the 'smaller is stronger' phenomenon. Such high stresses are thought to favour twinning over dislocation slip. Deformation twinning has been well documented in face-centred cubic (FCC) nanoscale crystals. However, it remains unexplored in body-centred cubic (BCC) nanoscale crystals. Here, by using in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atomistic simulations, we show that twinning is the dominant deformation mechanism in nanoscale crystals of BCC tungsten. Such deformation twinning is pseudoelastic, manifested through reversible detwinning during unloading. We find that the competition between twinning and dislocation slip can be mediated by loading orientation, which is attributed to the competing nucleation mechanism of defects in nanoscale BCC crystals. Our work provides direct observations of deformation twinning as well as new insights into the deformation mechanism in BCC nanostructures.

Abstract:By in situ uniaxial-tensile tests with dynamic and atomic scale observation, we report the quantitative investigation of strain-induced deformation-twinning process through incoherent twin boundary propagation in nanocrystalline Au. The consecutive and quantitative strain maps revealed that a strong compressive strain, up to 5.8%, was formed. A screw-rotation twinning mechanism by consecutive and collective screw-rotations of triple-partials along a [111] screw-axis is proposed. Abstract:Dense networks of deformation twins endow metals and alloys with unprecedented mechanical properties. However, the formation mechanism of these hierarchical twin structures remains under debate, especially their relations with the imperfect nature of twin boundaries (TBs). Here, we investigate the intrinsic deformability of defective TBs in face-centered cubic metallic materials, where the inherent kinks on a set of primary TBs are demonstrated to facilitate the formation of secondary and hierarchical nanotwins. This defect-driven hierarchical twinning propensity is critically dependent on the kink height, which proves to be generally applicable in a variety of metals and alloys with low stacking fault energies. As a geometric extreme, a fivefold twin can be constructed via this self-activated hierarchical twinning mechanism. These findings differ from the conventional twinning mechanisms, enriching our understanding of twinning-mediated plasticity in metallic materials.

Abstract:Nanomaterials often surprise us with unexpected phenomena. Here, we report a discovery of the anti-twinning deformation, previously thought impossible, in nanoscale body-centered cubic (BCC) tungsten crystals. By conducting in situ transmission electron microscopy nanomechanical testing, we observed the nucleation and growth of anti-twins in tungsten nanowires with diameters less than about 20 nm. During anti-twinning, a shear displacement of 1/3 < 111 > occurs on every successive {112} plane, in contrast to an opposite shear displacement of 1/6 <(1) over bar(1) over bar(1) over bar > by ordinary twinning. This asymmetry in the atomic-scale shear pathway leads to a much higher resistance to anti-twinning than ordinary twinning. However, anti-twinning can become active in nanosized BCC crystals under ultrahigh stresses, due to the limited number of plastic shear carriers in small crystal volumes. Our finding of the anti-twinning phenomenon has implications for harnessing unconventional deformation mechanisms to achieve high mechanical preformation by nanomaterials.
Strong Hall-Petch Type Behavior in the Elastic Strain Limit of Nanotwinned Gold Nanowires

Abstract:Pushing the limits of elastic deformation in nanowires subjected to stress is important for the design and performance of nanoscale devices from elastic strain engineering. Particularly, introducing nanoscale twins has proved effective in rising the tensile strength of metals. However, attaining ideal elastic strains in nanotwinned materials remains challenging, because nonuniform twin sizes locally affect the yielding behavior. Here, using in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy tensile testing of nanotwinned [111]-oriented gold nanowires, we report direct lattice-strain measurements that demonstrate a strong Hall-Petch type relationship in the elastic strain limit up to 5.3%, or near the ideal theoretical limit, as the twin size is decreased below 3 nm. It is found that the largest twin in nanowires with irregular twin sizes controls the slip nucleation and yielding processes in pure tension, which is in agreement with earlier atomistic simulations. Continuous hardening behavior without loss of strength or softening is observed in nanotwinned single-crystalline gold nanowires, which differs from the behaviors of bulk nanocrystalline and nanotwinned-nanocrystalline metals. These findings are of practical value for the use of nanotwinned metallic and semiconductor nanowires in strain-engineered functional microdevices.

Abstract:We have revealed the fundamental embryonic structure of deformation twins using in situ mechanical testing of magnesium single crystals in a transmission electron microscope. This structure consists of an array of twin-related laths on the scale of several nanometers. A computational model demonstrates that this structure should be a generic feature at the incipient stage of deformation twinning when there are correlated nucleation events. Our results shed light on the origin of twinning-induced plasticity and transformation toughening, critical to the development of advanced structural alloys with high strength, ductility, and toughness.
Strong strain hardening in ultrafast melt-quenched nanocrystalline Cu: The role of fivefold twins

Abstract:Nanocrystalline and nanotwinned metals exhibit ultrahigh strength but suffer from low ductility due to the absence of the strain hardening effect. Here, we report sustained strong strain hardening up to 20% compressive strain in a melt-quenched nanocrystalline Cu structure, which contains numerous fivefold twins, stacking faults, and twin boundaries. Our molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the strong strain hardening results from the synergistic effect of constant nucleation and impedance of dislocations, restricted twin boundary migration, and abundant dislocation reactions in fivefold twin networks. Specifically, we find that fivefold twins both nucleate and impede dislocations, and the migration of fivefold twin boundary is restricted by the core of fivefold twins. Moreover, we observe a new migration mechanism, in which fivefold twin boundary migrates by two atomic planes directly, enabled by the gliding of two different Shockley partial dislocations in the opposite directions. Finally, dislocation transmission, which is adverse to strain hardening, occurs very scarcely in fivefold twins. This is caused by the large misfit strains in fivefold twins and abundant immobile dislocations generated by frequent dislocation reactions in fivefold twin networks. This work reveals the advantage of fivefold twins over nanotwins to overcome the strength-ductility trade-off.

Abstract:Abstract Grain boundary (GB) plasticity dominates the mechanical behaviours of nanocrystalline materials. Under mechanical loading, GB configuration and its local deformation geometry change dynamically with the deformation; the dynamic variation of GB deformability, however, remains largely elusive, especially regarding its relation with the frequently-observed GB-associated deformation twins in nanocrystalline materials. Attention here is focused on the GB dynamics in metallic nanocrystals, by means of well-designed in situ nanomechanical testing integrated with molecular dynamics simulations. GBs with low mobility are found to dynamically adjust their configurations and local deformation geometries via crystallographic twinning, which instantly changes the GB dynamics and enhances the GB mobility. This self-adjust twin-assisted GB dynamics is found common in a wide range of face-centred cubic nanocrystalline metals under different deformation conditions. These findings enrich our understanding of GB-mediated plasticity, especially the dynamic behaviour of GBs, and bear practical implication for developing high performance nanocrystalline materials through interface engineering.

Our results show that the twin-structure NWs with circular cross-section exhibited a strong twin thickness strengthening effect, which led to their yield stress continuing to increase as the twin thickness decreased. The plastic deformation mechanisms of these NWs were significantly affected by both γsf/γusf [the ratio between the stacking fault energy (γsf) and the unstable stacking fault energy (γusf)] and the twin thickness. As the twin thickness decreased to three atomic layers, we discovered two new deformation models in the NWs. For Al and Ni, their plasticity was accommodated by lattice distortion resulting in brittle-like necking. Meanwhile, for Cu, Au and Ag, their plasticity was accommodated by lattice distortion and rearrangement that led to new grain formation in the NWs.

Abstract:Deformation twinning in pure aluminum has been considered to be a unique property of nanostructured aluminum. A lingering mystery is whether deformation twinning occurs in coarse-grained or single-crystal aluminum, at scales beyond nanotwins. Here, we present the first experimental demonstration of macro deformation twins in single-crystal aluminum formed under ultrahigh strain-rate ($\sim$10$^6$ s$^{-1}$), large shear strain (200$\%$) via dynamic equal channel angular pressing. Deformation twinning is rooted in the rate dependences of dislocation motion and twinning, which are coupled, complementary processes during severe plastic deformation under ultrahigh strain rates.
