Abstract:The ultra‐low frequency (ULF) waves can stochastically accelerate radiation belt electrons. Radial diffusion is a well‐established mechanism that can enhance or reduce the electron population in combination with other processes. Using data from the Van Allen Probes, we investigated the response of the 2.10 MeV energy electrons and ULF waves to two types of solar wind structures interacting with Earth's magnetosphere, namely, interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and High‐Speed solar wind streams (HSS). We use measured electron differential flux and ULF waves in the Pc4–Pc5 frequency range from October 2012 to May 2019. We examine 155 events with changes in the outer radiation belt electron differential flux. Results considering all ICMEs and HSSs during the Van Allen Probes era show that for both solar wind structures, solar wind interplanetary magnetic field Bz, solar wind proton density, and speed are related to the outer radiation belt relativistic electrons' response. The persistent ULF power is present during enhancement cases, while for reduction, the ULF waves power is concentrated at the initial reduction on the outer radiation belt electron flux. Abstract:Using particle and wave measurements from the Van Allen Probes, a 2‐D Fokker‐Planck simulation model driven by the time‐integrated auroral index (AL) value is developed. Simulations for a large sample of 186 storm‐time events are conducted, demonstrating that the AL‐driven model can reproduce flux enhancement of the MeV electrons. More importantly, the relativistic electron flux enhancement is determined by the sustained strong substorm activity. Enhanced substorm activity results in increased chorus wave intensity and reduced background electron density, which creates the required condition for local electron acceleration by chorus waves to MeV energies. The appearance of higher energy electrons in radiation belts requires a higher level of cumulative AL activity after the storm commencement, which acts as a type of switch, turning on progressively higher energies for longer and more intense substorms, at critical thresholds.

Abstract:Using the data from the Van Allen Probe-A spacecraft, the variability of the total outer radiation belt (2.5 < L* < 6) electron energy content (TRBEEC) for energetic electrons (> 300 keV) is investigated for the first time during 51 isolated storms spanning from October 2012 to May 2017. The statistical results show that the TRBEEC exhibits no change in 20% of the storms and gets enhanced during 80% of them. The subrelativistic electrons (300-500 keV) and relativistic electrons (0.5-2.0 MeV) equally contribute to the TRBEEC during the main phases, while in the recovery phases, the relativistic electrons contribute up to 80% of the TRBEEC. The results of the superposed epoch analysis of the solar wind parameters and geomagnetic indices indicate that the TRBEEC enhancement events preferably occur during the prolonged southward interplanetary magnetic field period when the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling is more efficient. Meanwhile, the high AE index with intense injections of several hundreds of kiloelectron volt seed electrons also favors the increase of the TRBEEC. Case study shows that there is a localized growing phase space density peak around L* = 4.3 and the chorus wave energy and the gain of TRBEEC are on the same order of magnitude, which may suggest that the enhancement of the TRBEEC is the consequence of the chorus acceleration. Understanding the energy budget of the outer zone electrons can provide more insight into the energy transfer from plasma waves to the energetic electron population, especially for revealing the underlying physics of the energization of outer radiation belt electrons via chorus wave acceleration.

Abstract:We investigate the magnetospheric MHD and energetic electron response to a Storm Sudden Commencement (SSC) and subsequent magnetopause buffeting, focusing on an interval following an SSC event on 25 November 2001. We find that the electron flux signatures observed by LANL, Cluster, and GOES spacecraft during this event can largely be reproduced using an advective kinetic model for electron phase space density, using externally prescribed electromagnetic field inputs, (herein described as a test-kinetic model) with electromagnetic field inputs provided by a 2-D linear ideal MHD model for ULF waves. In particular, we find modulations in electron flux phase shifted by 90 degrees from the local azimuthal ULF wave electric field (E) and a net enhancement in electron flux after 1.5 h for energies between 500 keV and 1.5 MeV near geosynchronous orbit. We also demonstrate that electrons in this energy range satisfy the drift resonance condition for the ULF waves produced by the MHD model. This confirms the conclusions reached by Tan et al. (2011), that the energization process in this case is dominated by drift-resonant interactions between electrons and MHD fast mode waves, produced by fluctuations in solar wind dynamic pressure.

Abstract:Different modelling methodologies possess different strengths and weakness. For instance, data based models may provide superior accuracy but have a limited spatial coverage while physics based models may provide lower accuracy but provide greater spatial coverage. This study investigates the coupling of a data based model of the electron fluxes at Geostationary orbit with a numerical model of the radiation belt region to improve the resulting forecasts/pastcasts of electron fluxes over the whole radiation belt region. In particular, two coupling methods are investigated. The first assumes an average value for L* for Geostationary orbit, namely = 6.2. The second uses a value of L* that varies with geomagnetic activity, quantified using the Kp index. As the terrestrial magnetic field responds to variations in geomagnetic activity, the value of L* will vary for a specific location. In this coupling method, the value of L* is calculated using the Kp driven Tsyganenko 89c magnetic field model for field line tracing. It is shown that this addition can result in changes in the initialisation of the parameters at the VERB outer boundary. Model outputs are compared to Van Allen Probes MagEIS measurements of the electron fluxes in the inner magnetosphere for the March 2015 geomagnetic storm. It is found that the fixed coupling method produces a more realistic forecast.
Probing Turbulent Scattering Effects on Suprathermal Electrons in the Solar Wind: Modeling, Observations, and Implications

Abstract:This study explores the impact of a turbulent scattering mechanism, akin to those influencing solar and galactic cosmic rays propagating in the interplanetary medium, on the population of suprathermal electrons in the solar wind. We employ a Fokker–Planck equation to model the radial evolution of electron pitch angle distributions under the action of magnetic focusing, which moves the electrons away from isotropy, and of a diffusion process that tends to bring them back to it. We compare the steady-state solutions of this Fokker–Planck equation with data obtained from the Solar Orbiter and Parker Solar Probe missions and find a remarkable agreement, varying the turbulent mean free path as the sole free parameter in our model. The obtained mean free paths are of the order of the astronomical unit, and display weak dependence on electron energy within the 100 eV–1 keV range. This value is notably lower than Coulomb collision estimates but aligns well with observed mean free paths of low-rigidity solar energetic particle events. The strong agreement between our model and observations leads us to conclude that the hypothesis of turbulent scattering at work on electrons at all heliospheric distances is justified. We discuss several implications, notably the existence of a low Knudsen number region at large distances from the Sun, which offers a natural explanation for the presence of an isotropic "halo" component at all distances from the Sun—electrons being isotropized in this distant region before traveling back into the inner part of the interplanetary medium.

Abstract:The coupling response between solar wind structures and the magnetosphere is highly complex, leading to different effects in the outer radiation belt electron fluxes. Most Coronal Mass Ejections cause strong geomagnetic storms with short recovery phases, often 1-2 days. By contrast, High-Speed Solar Wind Streams lead to moderate and weak storms often with much longer recovery phases, from several to ∼10 days. The magnetosphere receives energy for a long time under the influence of the HSSs, considerably changing its dynamics. This in turn has an effect on the charged particles trapped in the outer radiation belt. Although the high-energy electron flux enhancements have received considerable attention, the high-energy electron flux enhancement pattern (L > 4) has not. This paper identifies 37 events with this enhancement pattern in the high-energy electron flux during the Van Allen Probes era. We find the enhancements coincident with HSS occurrence. The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) exhibits north/south Bz fluctuations of Alfvénic nature with moderate amplitudes. The high-energy electron flux enhancements also correspond to long periods of auroral activity indicating a relationship to magnetotail dynamics. However, the AE index only reaches moderate values. Ultra-Low Frequency waves were present in all of the events and whistler-mode chorus waves were present in 89.1% of the events, providing a convenient scenario for wave-particle interactions. The radial gradient of the ULF wave power related to the L, under the influence of the HSSs, is necessary to trigger the physical processes responsible for this type of high-energy electron flux enhancement pattern. Abstract:Solar wind is an intermediary in energy transfer from the Sun into the Earth's magnetosphere, and is considered as a decisive driver of energetic electron dynamics at the geosynchronous orbit (GEO). Based on machine learning technology, several models driven by solar wind parameters have been established to predict GEO electron fluxes. However, the relative contributions of different solar wind parameters on GEO electron fluxes are still unclear. Recently, a feature attribution method, Deep SHapley Additive exPlanations (Deep SHAP) is proposed to open black boxes of machine learning models. In this study, we use the Deep SHAP method to quantify contributions of different solar wind parameters with an artificial neural network (ANN) model. Backpropagating the prediction results of this ANN model from 2011 to 2020, SHAP values for four solar wind parameters (interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) BZ, solar wind speed, solar wind dynamic pressure, and proton density) are calculated and comprehensively analyzed. The results suggest that solar wind speed with a lag of 1 day is the most important driver. We further investigate relative roles of different parameters in three specific electron fluxes variation events (corresponding to electron fluxes reaching a local maximum, a local minimum, and unchanged, respectively). The results suggest that high solar wind speed and southward IMF BZ (high dynamic pressures) facilitate increases (decreases) of electron fluxes. These findings help reveal the underlying physical mechanisms of GEO electron dynamics and help develop more accurate prediction models for GEO electron fluxes.

Responses of Relativistic Electron Fluxes in the Outer Radiation Belt to Geomagnetic Storms

Abstract:Geomagnetic storms can either increase or decrease relativistic electron fluxes in the outer radiation belt. A statistical survey of 84 isolated storms demonstrates that geomagnetic storms preferentially decrease relativistic electron fluxes at higher energies, while flux enhancements are more common at lower energies. In about 87% of the storms, 0.3-2.5 MeV electron fluxes show an increase, whereas 2.5-14 MeV electron fluxes increase in only 35% of the storms. Superposed epoch analyses suggest that such "energy-dependent" responses of electrons preferably occur during conditions of high solar wind density which is favorable to generate magnetospheric electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves, and these events are associated with relatively weaker chorus activities. We have examined one of the cases where observed EMIC waves can resonate effectively with >2.5 MeV electrons and scatter them into the atmosphere. The correlation study further illustrates that electron flux dropouts during storm main phases do not correlate well with the flux buildup during storm recovery phases. We suggest that a combination of efficient EMIC-induced scattering and weaker chorus-driven acceleration provides a viable candidate for the energy-dependent responses of outer radiation belt relativistic electrons to geomagnetic storms. These results are of great interest to both understanding of the radiation belt dynamics and applications in space weather.
Omnidirectional Energetic Electron Fluxes from 150 km to 20,000 km: an ELFIN-Based Model

Abstract:The strong variations of energetic electron fluxes in the Earth's inner magnetosphere are notoriously hard to forecast. Developing accurate empirical models of electron fluxes from low to high altitudes at all latitudes is therefore useful to improve our understanding of flux variations and to assess radiation hazards for spacecraft systems. In the present work, energy- and pitch-angle-resolved precipitating, trapped, and backscattered electron fluxes measured at low altitude by Electron Loss and Fields Investigation (ELFIN) CubeSats are used to infer omnidirectional fluxes at altitudes below and above the spacecraft, from 150 km to 20,000 km, making use of adiabatic transport theory and quasi-linear diffusion theory. The inferred fluxes are fitted as a function of selected parameters using a stepwise multivariate optimization procedure, providing an analytical model of omnidirectional electron flux along each geomagnetic field line, based on measurements from only one spacecraft in low Earth orbit. The modeled electron fluxes are provided as a function of $L$-shell, altitude, energy, and two different indices of past substorm activity, computed over the preceding 4 hours or 3 days, potentially allowing to disentangle impulsive processes (such as rapid injections) from cumulative processes (such as inward radial diffusion and wave-driven energization). The model is validated through comparisons with equatorial measurements from the Van Allen Probes, demonstrating the broad applicability of the present method. The model indicates that both impulsive and time-integrated substorm activity partly control electron fluxes in the outer radiation belt and in the plasma sheet.

Comparison of Empirical Models of Ionospheric Heating to Global Simulations

Abstract:Intense currents produced during geomagnetic storms dissipate energy in the ionosphere through Joule heating. This dissipation has significant space weather effects, and thus it is important to determine the ability of physics-based simulations to replicate real events quantitatively. Several empirical models estimate Joule heating based on ionospheric currents using the AE index. In this study, we select 11 magnetic storm simulations from the CCMC database and compare the integrated Joule heating in the simulations with the results of empirical models. We also use the SWMF global magnetohydrodynamic simulations for 12 storms to reproduce the correlation between the simulated AE index and simulated Joule heating. We find that the scale factors in the empirical models are half what is predicted by the SWMF simulations.

Abstract:Abstract We report a new modeling capability that self‐consistently couples physics‐based magnetospheric electron precipitation with its impact on the ionosphere. Specifically, the ring current model RAM‐SCBE is two‐way coupled to an ionospheric electron transport model GLOW, representing a significant improvement over previous models, in which the ionosphere is either treated as a 2D spherical boundary of the magnetosphere, or is driven by empirical precipitation models that are incapable of capturing small‐scale, transient variations. The new model enables us to study the impact of substorm‐associated, spectrum‐resolved electron precipitation on the 3D ionosphere. We found that after each substorm injection, a high‐energy tail of precipitation is produced in the dawn sector outside the plasmapause, by energetic electrons (10<E<100 keV) scattered by whistler‐mode chorus waves. Consequently, an ionospheric sub‐layer characterized by enhanced Pedersen conductivity arises at unusually low altitude (∼85 km), with its latitudinal width of ∼5‐10° in the auroral zone. The sub‐layer structure appears intermittently, in correlation with recurrent substorm injections. It propagates eastward from the nightside to the dayside in the same drift direction of source electrons injected from the plasmasheet, resulting in global impact within the ionosphere. This study demonstrates the model's capability of revealing complex cross‐scale interactions in the geospace environment.

Abstract:We simulate the radiation belt electron flux enhancements during selected Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) challenge events to quantitatively compare the major processes involved in relativistic electron acceleration under different conditions. Van Allen Probes observed significant electron flux enhancement during both the storm time of 17-18 March 2013 and non-storm time of 19-20 September 2013, but the distributions of plasma waves and energetic electrons for the two events were dramatically different. During 17-18 March 2013, the SYM-H minimum reached -130nT, intense chorus waves (peak B-w similar to 140pT) occurred at 3.55.5, and electron fluxes at energies up to 3MeV increased by a factor of similar to 5 at L>5.5. The two electron flux enhancement events were simulated using the available wave distribution and diffusion coefficients from the GEM focus group Quantitative Assessment of Radiation Belt Modeling. By comparing the individual roles of local electron heating and radial transport, our simulation indicates that resonant interaction with chorus waves is the dominant process that accounts for the electron flux enhancement during the storm time event particularly near the flux peak locations, while radial diffusion by ultralow-frequency waves plays a dominant role in the enhancement during the non-storm time event. Incorporation of both processes reasonably reproduces the observed location and magnitude of electron flux enhancement.
Dynamic Responses of Outer Radiation Belt Electron Phase Space Densities to Geomagnetic Storms: A Statistical Analysis Based on Van Allen Probes Observations

Abstract:Using Van Allen Probes observations from September 2012 to June 2019, we statistically investigate responses of the Earth's outer radiation belt electron phase space densities (PSDs) in the adiabatic invariant coordinates to isolated geomagnetic storms. Electron PSDs for μ = 50–5,000 MeV/G, covering energy range of seed, relativistic and ultra‐relativistic electrons, are calculated to evaluate three types of storm‐time PSD responses (i.e., enhancement, depletion, and no change). In statistics, the seed PSD variations are dominated by enhancement‐type events, the percentages of which increase from >50% for small storms (−50 nT 70% for large storms (SYM‐Hmin ≤ −50 nT). The relativistic and ultra‐relativistic PSDs exhibit the three response types with comparable occurrence rates for small storms but present predominantly enhancement‐type variations (>50%) for large storms. Enhanced storm activity increases the enhancement‐type responses for seed PSDs at all L* and for relativistic and ultra‐relativistic PSDs at L* > 3.5. It also results in the increased depletion‐type response occurrence for relativistic and ultra‐relativistic PSDs at lower L*. Our results further indicate that the depletion‐type responses manifest evident dependence on the level of solar and geomagnetic activity and the μ‐value, implying complex physics accounting for outer zone electron losses. Improved knowledge of the storm‐time dynamics of outer radiation belt electron PSDs is valuable to in‐depth comprehension of various mechanisms responsible for the electron acceleration and loss. It has important implications for future simulations and forecasts of radiation belt electron variability, in particular, during geomagnetically disturbed periods.

Study of Solar Energetic Particle Events with Ulysses, ACE Observations and Numerical Simulations

Abstract:We study the latitudinal extent of the near-relativistic electron events of 10 June 2000 and 26 December 2001, observed by both Ulysses and ACE. From the observations it is shown that the intensity of ACE was quite different from that of Ulysses. Through the numerical simulations, we obtain the SEPs time-intensity profiles, which generally fit well to the observations. To compare the observations we obtained the best fit parameters for the simulations. We suggest that the transport effects, especially the perpendicular diffusion effect, can cause the difference between the intensity profiles of ACE and Ulysses, which is dominated by particle transport at a large radial distance and high-latitude when a spacecraft has poor magnetic connection to the particle source. Furthermore, we present the particle source from the best fit parameters to show that the start and peak times of the particle sources are between the onset and max times of a flare in all the energy channels. Moreover, we propose models for the peak intensity and half width of the particle source, and the time interval from the flare onset to the particle source peak time. We show that the models generally agree with the best fit parameters.

Abstract:By coupling the EUropean Heliospheric FORcasting Information Asset (EUHFORIA) and the improved Particle Acceleration and Transport in the Heliosphere (iPATH) model, two energetic storm particle (ESP) events, originating from the same active region (AR 13088) and observed by Solar Orbiter (SolO) on August 31 2022 and September 05 2022, are modelled. While both events originated from the same active region, they exhibited notable differences, including: 1) the August ESP event lasted for 7 hours, while the September event persisted for 16 hours; 2) The time intensity profiles for the September event showed a clear cross-over upstream of the shock where the intensity of higher energy protons exceeds those of lower energy protons, leading to positive (``reverse'') spectral indices prior to the shock passage. For both events, our simulations replicate the observed duration of the shock sheath, depending on the deceleration history of the CME. Imposing different choices of escaping length scale, which is related to the decay of upstream turbulence, the modelled time intensity profiles prior to the shock arrival also agree with observations. In particular, the cross-over of this time profile in the September event is well reproduced. We show that a ``reverse'' upstream spectrum is the result of the interplay between two length scales. One characterizes the decay of upstream shock accelerated particles, which are controlled by the energy-dependent diffusion coefficient, and the other characterizes the decay of upstream turbulence power, which is related to the process of how streaming protons upstream of the shock excite Alfvén waves. Simulations taking into account real-time background solar wind, the dynamics of the CME propagation, and upstream turbulence at the shock front are necessary to thoroughly understand the ESP phase of large SEP events.

Abstract:Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and high speed solar streams serve as perturbations to the background solar wind that have major implications in space weather dynamics. Therefore, a robust framework for accurate predictions of the background wind properties is a fundamental step towards the development of any space weather prediction toolbox. In this pilot study, we focus on the implementation and comparison of various models that are critical for a steady state, solar wind forecasting framework. Specifically, we perform case studies on Carrington rotations 2053, 2082 and 2104, and compare the performance of magnetic field extrapolation models in conjunction with velocity empirical formulations to predict solar wind properties at Lagrangian point L1. Two different models to extrapolate the solar wind from the coronal domain to the inner-heliospheric domain are presented, namely, (a) Kinematics based (Heliospheric Upwind eXtrapolation [HUX]) model and (b) Physics based model. The physics based model solves a set of conservative equations of hydrodynamics using the PLUTO code and can additionally predict the thermal properties of solar wind. The assessment in predicting solar wind parameters of the different models is quantified through statistical measures. We further extend this developed framework to also assess the polarity of inter-planetary magnetic field at L1. Our best models for the case of CR2053 gives a very high correlation coefficient ($\sim$ 0.73-0.81) and has an root mean square error of ($\sim$ 75-90 kms$^{-1}$). Additionally, the physics based model has a standard deviation comparable with that obtained from the hourly OMNI solar wind data and also produces a considerable match with observed solar wind proton temperatures measured at L1 from the same database.
