Abstract:The natural compound beta-cyclodextrin supported copper complex (CuI@beta-CD) was prepared and employed as catalyst for an Ullmann-type C-N coupling reaction of N-nucleophiles and aryl halides under mild conditions. Reactions with different substrates were examined, and moderate to excellent yields were obtained. In addition to the high efficiency, the reaction system is also noticeable due to the excellent recoverability and reusability of the catalyst.

Abstract:A heteronuclear dual transition metal atom catalyst is a promising strategy to solve and relieve the increasing energy and environment crisis. However, the role of each atom still does not efficiently differentiate due to the high activity but low detectivity of each transition metal in the synergistic catalytic process when considering the influence of heteronuclear induced atomic difference for each transition metal atom, thus seriously hindering intrinsic mechanism finding. Herein, we proposed coordinate environment vary induced heterogenization of homonuclear dual transition metal, which inherits the advantage of heteronuclear transition metal atom catalyst but also controls the variable of the two atoms to explore the underlying mechanism. Based on this proposal, employing density functional theory study and machine learning, 23 kinds of homonuclear transition metals are doping in four asymmetric C3N for heterogenization to evaluate the underlying catalytic mechanism. Our results demonstrate that five catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance with a low limiting potential of -0.28 to -0.48 V. In the meantime, a new mechanism, ‘capture-charge distribution-recapture-charge redistribution’, is developed for both side-on and end-on configuration. More importantly, the pronate site of the first hydrogenation is identified based on this mechanism. Our work not only initially makes a deep understanding of the transition dual metal-based heteronuclear catalyst indirectly but also broadens the development of complicated homonuclear dual atom catalysts in the future.
High-performance Heterogeneous Catalysis with Surface-Exposed Stable Metal Nanoparticles.

Abstract:Protection of metal nanoparticles from agglomeration is critical for their functions and applications. The conventional method for enhancing their stability is to cover them with passivation layers to prevent direct contact. However, the presence of a protective shell blocks exposure of the metal species to reactants, thereby significantly impeding the nanoparticles' utility as catalysts. Here, we report that metal nanoparticles can be prepared and used in a surface-exposed state that renders them inherently catalytically active. This strategy is realised by spatial confinement and electronic stabilisation with a dual-module mesoporous and microporous three-dimensional π-network in which surface-exposed nanoparticles are crystallised upon in situ reduction. The uncovered palladium nanoparticles serve as heterogeneous catalysts that are exceptionally active in water, catalyse unreactive aryl chlorides for straightforward carbon-carbon bond formation and are stable for repeated use in various types of cross couplings. Therefore, our results open new perspectives in developing practical heterogeneous catalysts.
Mononuclear Assemblies with Metal-Metal Interaction: Syntheses and Catalytical Performance in Suzuki-Coupling Reaction

Abstract:A series of mononuclear complexes named [(bpy)Pd(L)]NO3 (1 center dot NO3 center dot H2O), Rbpy)Pt(L)]NO3 (2 center dot NO3 center dot H2O), and Rphen)Pd(L)]NO3 (3 center dot NO3 center dot H2O) (where bpy=2,2'-bipyridine, phen=1,10-phenanthroline) have been self-assembled through a directed coordination approach that involves spontaneous deprotonation of the 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-dione (L) in aqueous solution driven by coordination effect. NO3- in these assemblies can be effectively replaced by PF6- in a solution of KPF6. All of these new mononuclear complexes have been fully characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and ESI-MS analysis. X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 center dot PF6 center dot CH3CN clearly shows that a dimeric crystal structure is formed by the stacking interactions and weak intramolecular Pd ... Pd (0.322 4 nm) interactions. More importantly, all of these three assemblies can be employed as a new kind of high-efficiency catalysts for Suzuki-coupling reaction. Abstract:In the present work, Palladium nanoparticles were supported on Cinchonine functionalized ZrFe2O4 MNPs. The structure, morphology, and physicochemical properties of the particles were characterized through different analytical techniques, including fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) techniques. Moreover, it was obtained as an efficient catalyst for Hiyama and Suzuki reactions under green conditions with good to excellent yields. This method has the advantages of simple methodology, high yields, easy work-up, greener conditions, and short reaction times. This catalyst was reused four times in C-C coupling reaction without loss of its catalytic activity. The reused catalyst was characterized by ICP and FT-IR techniques. Heterogeneity and stability of ZrFe2O4@SiO2-S-CCH-Pd were studied by hot filtration test and ICP analysis.

Abstract:A palladium–zinc alloy nanoparticles decorated nitrogen-doped porous carbon catalyst (PdZn 30 –NC) was synthesized and utilized for Suzuki coupling reaction. The alloying palladium (Pd) with zinc (Zn) and pore expanding are realized simultaneously. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental studies reveal that the alloying Pd with Zn can lower the energy barrier in Suzuki coupling reaction. Nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements uncover that pore expansion caused by the zinc nitrate hexahydrate assisted calcination gives rise to the multiplication of mesopore with a pore diameter of 6 nm, which facilitates mass transfer during the reaction. As a result, the alloying Pd with Zn and pore expanding together endow PdZn 30 –NC with excellent catalytic activity. PdZn 30 –NC demonstrates exceptional catalytic activity and stability in Suzuki coupling reaction. A high biphenyl yield of 97.7 % within 40 min and stable reusability of 93.3 % yield after five reuse cycles can be achieved. This work not only offers a viable method for Suzuki coupling reaction, but also provides insights for designing new catalysts toward Suzuki coupling reaction.

Abstract:The Suzuki cross-coupling reaction, which is generally catalyzed by Pd-based materials, is a practical approach to create C–C bonds. Although heterogeneous catalysts, including metal-loaded and intermetallic catalysts, afford simple reaction conditions and catalyst reusability, it is challenging to achieve high catalytic activity, durability, and Pd-atom economy together in a single catalyst. Herein, we report the successful preparation of Pd–ZrC, a Pd-based catalyst with the described desirable features. In it, a-few-nanometer-sized nanoparticles of intermetallic ZrPd3 are uniformly dispersed on the surface of nanoporous ZrC with a surface area of 340–450 m2 g–1. As a result of the presence of electron-rich Pd sites and the material’s strong electron-donating ability, Pd–ZrC achieved high catalytic performance in Suzuki cross-coupling reactions at room temperature. Because a low Pd content (1 wt %) is sufficient to produce highly catalytically active Pd–ZrC, this material represents a great improvement in terms of Pd-atom economy over previously reported catalysts. Moreover, no catalytic degradation was noted over up to the presented 15 reaction cycles as the active Pd sites were stabilized in the ZrPd3 lattice. These results indicate that Pd–ZrC has the advantages of both metal-loaded and intermetallic catalysts, providing an approach to enhance the degree of freedom for designing heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:A variety of Ni catalyzed cross-coupling reactions have emerged as efficient new methods for the construction of C–C bonds, and many mechanistic studies have been conducted to understand the factors controlling the reactivity and selectivity of Ni catalyzed reactions. The mechanisms of Ni catalyzed reactions are often very different from the corresponding Pd catalyzed processes because radical or bimetallic pathways are frequently involved in Ni catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. This review summarized recent advances in the mechanism of Ni catalyzed cross-coupling reactions. These are important for the development of new Ni catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with improved efficiency and selectivity.

Abstract:Nanoporous PdCu (NP-PdCu) was prepared by the dealloying strategy from a PdCuAl ternary alloy precursor and characterized systematically using SEM, TEM, XRD, and XPS. NP-PdCu was demonstrated to be a competent self-supported heterogenous catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, affording a series of synthetically valuable biaryl compounds in good to excellent yields. This catalyst could be easily separated from the product via centrifugation and reused several times without obvious loss of catalytic performance.

Abstract:Metal ligand cooperation (MLC) plays an important role in the development of homogeneous catalysts. Two major MLC modes have generally been proposed, known as the M-L bond mode and the (de)aromatization mode. To reveal the role of the dual potential functional sites on the MLC process, we present a detailed mechanistic study on a novel-designed Ru-PNNH complex possessing dual potential MLC functional sites for the M-L bond mode and the (de)aromatization mode, respectively. Our results indicate that the Ru-PNNH complex prefers the M-L mode exclusively during different stages of the catalytic cycle. The unusual double deprotonation process and the mechanistic preference are rationalized. The N-arm deprotonation is attributed to the small steric hindrance of the amido N-arm and the conjugation stabilization effect of the amido group. Abstract:Atomic dispersed heterogeneous catalysts have emerged as a prominent research focus in catalysis due to their exceptional atom utilization, robust activity, and remarkable selectivity. However, the design and synthesis of catalysts with a precisely defined atomic number and exceptional dispersion still pose significant challenges. In this study, we employed a magnetron sputtering cluster source equipped with a mass selector to selectively fabricate single-atom, dual-atom, and clusters with precise atomic numbers catalysts supported on mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (mpg-C3N4). This method provides a universally applicable approach for synthesizing highly pure diatomic catalysts. Furthermore, the dual-atom Pd catalyst exhibits an outstanding turnover frequency of 5819 h(-1) in the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene, surpassing that of both single-atom Pd and Pd-2057 clusters. Density functional theory calculations reveal that excellent hydrogenation performance benefits from the easier dissociation of H-H bonds at the atomic geminal Pd-2 sites in the hydrogenation process of nitrobenzene compared to that of single-atom Pd and Pd clusters. This work presents a universal synthetic strategy for precisely constructing multimetal atomic centers, showcasing the advantages of geminal metal sites in catalyzing multimolecule-involved reactions.

Abstract:Palladium-catalysed cross-coupling reactions, central tools in fine-chemical synthesis, predominantly employ soluble metal complexes despite recognized challenges with product purification and catalyst reusability1–3. Attempts to tether these homogeneous catalysts on insoluble carriers have been thwarted by suboptimal stability, which leads to a progressively worsening performance due to metal leaching or clustering4. The alternative application of supported Pd nanoparticles has faced limitations because of insufficient activity under the mild conditions required to avoid thermal degradation of the substrates or products. Single-atom heterogeneous catalysts lie at the frontier5–18. Here, we show that the Pd atoms anchored on exfoliated graphitic carbon nitride (Pd-ECN) capture the advantages of both worlds, as they comprise a solid catalyst that matches the high chemoselectivity and broad functional group tolerance of state-of-the-art homogeneous catalysts for Suzuki couplings, and also demonstrate a robust stability in flow. The adaptive coordination environment within the macroheterocycles of ECN facilitates each catalytic step. The findings illustrate the exciting opportunities presented by nanostructuring single atoms in solid hosts for catalytic processes that remain difficult to heterogenize.

Abstract:Delicate elaboration of the nanostructures of multimetal catalytic materials with well-defined shapes and compositions to reveal their potential use as heterogeneous nanocatalysts for organic synthetic reactions with the combined merits of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis is both scientifically and technologically important, but this type of investigation has remained rarely pursued. In this work, we demonstrated a facile hydrothermal approach toward the one-pot shape-selective syntheses of Pd-Rh nanocrystals with tunable compositions and morphologies, including hollow nanocubes (NCs), nanoicosahedrons (NIs), and nanotruncated octahedrons (NTOs), using poly(vinylpyrrolidone) as both reductant and capping agent and halide anions (Br-/I-) as shape control agents. The formation of Pd-Rh hollow NCs was induced by an iodine adsorbate-induced reconstruction mechanism with KI, whereas the formation of Pd-Rh NIs and NTOs were realized by controlling the selective nucleation of twinned seeds or single crystal seeds and their relative growth rates along different facets (e.g., (111) and (100) facets) through finely adjusting the Pd/Rh ratio and the amount of KBr added in the absence of KI. Due to the great significance of Pd-catalyzed organic reactions, the catalytic performances of Pd-Rh nanocrystals for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions with different reactants were evaluated. The measured turnover frequencies (TOFs) suggested that Pd-Rh hollow NCs held considerably enhanced catalytic activities (at least 3 times) than other Pd-based solid nanocrystals including Pd-Rh NIs, Pd-Rh NTOs, Pd-Rh NCs, Pd-NCs, and commercial Pd/C, with iodobenzene as the reactant. In addition, even for more inert reactants such as bromobenzene or 4-bromotoluene, the catalytic activities of Pd-Rh hollow NCs were still impressive (showing similar TOFs to those of other shapes for reactions with iodobenzene as the reactant), indicating the promising application of Pd-based nanocatalysts for other powerful Pd-catalyzed organic synthesis reactions. Meanwhile, Pd-based solid NCs, enclosed with (100) facets only, showed better catalytic performance than NIs as well as NTOs, which had a larger fraction of (111) facets other than (100) ones, further suggesting that morphology differences were vitally significant to tune the catalytic performances of bimetallic nanocatalysts.

Abstract:The synthesis of highly uniform alloy nanocrystals with a concave feature is desirable for applications in catalysis but is an arduous task. This article proposes an initiative protocol for the fabrication of novel Cu-Pd alloy nanocrystals, wherein the volume of decylamine (DA) in the reaction system was found to greatly influence the formation of different morphologies, including the tetrahedron (TH), concave tetrahedron (CTH), rhombohedral-tetrapod (RTP), and tetrapod (TP). The alloy structure of the products arises from the coordination interaction between the DA and metal ions, which affects the reduction potential of Cu and Pd species, and thus yields co-reduction. Other reaction parameters, such as the type of ligand, amount of reductant, and temperature, were also altered to study the growth mechanism, yielding consistent conclusions in the diffusion-controlled regime. As a catalyst, 48-nm Cu-Pd concave tetrahedral nanocrystals were highly active for the hydrogenation of 3-nitrostyrene and exhibited >99.9% chemoselectivity to C=C instead of -NO 2 .

Abstract:The design of high-performance catalysts is the key to the efficient utilization of hydrogen energy. In this work, a PdCu nanoalloy was successfully anchored on TiO 2 encapsulated with carbon to construct a catalyst. Outstanding kinetics of the hydrolysis of ammonia borane (turnover frequency of 279 ) ranking the third place among Pd-based catalysts was achieved in the absence of alkali. Both experimental research and theoretical calculations reveal a lower activation energy of the B-H bond on the PdCu nanoalloy catalyst than that on pristine Pd and a lower activation energy of the O-H bond than that on pristine Cu. The redistribution of d electron and the shift of the d-band center play a critical role in increasing the electron density of Pd and improving the catalytic performances of Pd 0.1 Cu 0.9 /TiO 2 -porous carbon (Pd 0.1 Cu 0.9 /T-PC). This work provides novel insights into highly dual-active alloys and sheds light on the mechanism of dual-active sites in promoting borohydride hydrolysis.

Bimetallic Pd-Ni core-shell nanoparticles as effective catalysts for the Suzuki reaction

Abstract:A simple and efficient solution-based method for the synthesis of Pd-Ni bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) has been developed. A series of Pd-Ni bimetallic NPs were readily achieved by reduction of PdCl2 and Ni(acac)2 (acac = acetylacetonate) in the presence of oleylamine (OAm), oleic acid (OA) and benzyl alcohol. Furthermore, by using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) mapping and X-ray diffraction (XRD), we demonstrate that the as-prepared Pd-Ni bimetallic NPs have core-shell structures with a Pd-rich core and a Ni-rich shell. In addition, the as-obtained Pd-Ni bimetallic NPs with varying compositions show excellent catalytic activities in the Miyaura-Suzuki reaction. When the nickel molar percentage was 0.23 to 0.65, the conversion with the as-obtained Pd-Ni bimetallic catalysts was above 90%. It is believed that this strategy can be employed to produce a variety of other well-defined core-shell type multimetallic nanostructures.
