Abstract:Fiber-based thermoelectric materials and devices have the characteristics of light-weight, stability, and flexibility, which can be used in wearable electronics, attracting the wide attention of researchers. In this work, we present a review of state-of-the-art fiber-based thermoelectric material fabrication, device assembling, and its potential applications in temperature sensing, thermoelectric generation, and temperature management. In this mini review, we also shine some light on the potential application in the next generation of wearable electronics, and discuss the challenges and opportunities.

Abstract:Thermoelectrics, enabling direct converting between heat and electricity, have become one of the most promising techniques for the realization of energy-saving and environmental protection. As a key member of the thermoelectric family, fiber-based thermoelectrics possess significant potential in the area of charging wearable electronics, owing to their high performance, high flexibility, and high stability features. Based on the fast development of fiber-based thermoelectrics, this review aims to comprehensively summarize the state-of-the-art fiber-based thermoelectric materials and devices, including their unique designs, chemical engineering, advanced fabrication methods, outstanding thermoelectric properties, and wide applications. In the end, we point out the challenge and outlook for further improving thermoelectric performance, flexibility, and stability of fiber-based thermoelectrics.

Abstract:With rapid development of wearable electronic technology, flexible thermoelectrics have become an important research topic in the field of wearable energy devices, owing to their sustainable power-supply ability, flexibility, and portability. However, the application of flexible thermoelectric devices in wearables is limited by their low stretchability, lack of breathability, and poor functional integration. Fiber-based stretchable thermoelectric devices with one-dimensional structure feature properties such as small size, lightweight, large deformation, and weavability, which make them suitable for integration into wearable fabrics. In addition, these devices can harvest thermal energy from human body. In this study, the materials, structures, and processing techniques developed for the fabrication of stretchable fiber thermoelectric devices are reviewed. Thereafter, their applications in self-powered sensing, energy harvesting, and thermoelectric cooling are discussed. Finally, a summary and an outlook are provided on the development of fiber thermoelectric devices wherein the key challenges of their practical applications are highlighted.

Abstract:With the development and prosperity of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, wearable electronics have brought fresh changes to our lives. The demands for low power consumption and mini-type wearable power systems for wearable electronics are more urgent than ever. Thermoelectric materials can efficiently convert the temperature difference between body and environment into electrical energy without the need for mechanical components, making them one of the ideal candidates for wearable power systems. In recent years, a variety of high-performance thermoelectric materials and processes for the preparation of large-scale single-fiber devices have emerged, driving the application of flexible fiber-based thermoelectric generators. By weaving thermoelectric fibers into a textile that conforms to human skin, it can achieve stable operation for long periods even when the human body is in motion. In this review, the complete process from thermoelectric materials to single-fiber/yarn devices to thermoelectric textiles is introduced comprehensively. Strategies for enhancing thermoelectric performance, processing techniques for fiber devices, and the wide applications of thermoelectric textiles are summarized. In addition, the challenges of ductile thermoelectric materials, system integration, and specifications are discussed, and the relevant developments in this field are prospected.Graphical abstract

Abstract:With the rapid development of wearable electronics, looking for flexible and wearable generators as their self-power systems has proved an extensive task. Fiber-based thermoelectric generators (FTEGs) are promising candidates for these self-powered systems that collect energy from the surrounding environment or human body to sustain wearable electronics. In this work, we overview performances and device structures of state-of-the-art fiber-based thermoelectric materials, including inorganic fibers (e.g., carbon fibers, oxide fibers, and semiconductor fibers), organic fibers, and hybrid fibers. Moreover, potential applications for related thermoelectric devices are discussed, and future developments in fiber-based thermoelectric materials are also briefly expected.

Abstract:Thermoelectric technology can directly harvest the waste heat into electricity, which is a promising field of green and sustainable energy. In this aspect, flexible thermoelectrics (FTE) such as wearable fabrics, smart biosensing, and biomedical electronics offer a variety of applications. Since the nanofibers are one of the important constructions of FTE, inorganic thermoelectric fibers are focused on here due to their excellent thermoelectric performance and acceptable flexibility. Additionally, measurement and microstructure characterizations for various thermoelectric fibers (Bi-Sb-Te, Ag2Te, PbTe, SnSe and NaCo2O4) made by different fabrication methods, such as electrospinning, two-step anodization process, solution-phase deposition method, focused ion beam, and self-heated 3ω method, are detailed. This review further illustrates that some techniques, such as thermal drawing method, result in high performance of fiber-based thermoelectric properties, which can emerge in wearable devices and smart electronics in the near future.

Abstract:Self-powered wearable thermoelectric (TE) devices significantly reduce the inconvenience caused to users, especially in daily use of portable devices and monitoring personal health. The textile-based TE devices (TETs) exhibit the excellent flexibility, deformability, and light weight, which fulfill demands of long-term wearing for the human body. In comparison to traditional TE devices with their longstanding research history, TETs are still in an initial stage of growth. In recent years, TETs to provide electricity for low-power wearable electronics have attracted increasing attention. This review summarizes the recent progress of TETs from the points of selecting TE materials, scalable fabrication methods of TE fibers/yarns and TETs, structure design of TETs and reported high-performance TETs. The key points to develop TETs with outstanding TE properties and mechanical performance and better than available optimization strategies are discussed. Furthermore, remaining challenges and perspectives of TETs are also proposed to suggest practical applications for heat harvesting from human body.

Abstract:Flexible inorganic electronic devices (FIEDs) consisting of functional inorganic components on a soft polymer substrate have enabled many novel applications such as epidermal electronics and wearable electronics, which cannot be realized through conventional rigid electronics. The low thermal dissipation capacity of the soft polymer substrate of FIEDs demands proper thermal management to reduce the undesired thermal influences. The biointegrated applications of FIEDs pose even more stringent requirements on thermal management due to the sensitive nature of biological tissues to temperature. In this review, we take microscale inorganic light-emitting diodes (mu-ILEDs) as an example of functional components to summarize the recent advances on thermal management of FIEDs including thermal analysis, thermo-mechanical analysis and thermal designs of FIEDs with and without biological tissues. These results are very helpful to understand the underlying heat transfer mechanism and provide design guidelines to optimize FIEDs in practical applications.

Abstract:With both the properties of bulk thermoelectric material and advantages of flexible fiber structure, thermoelectric fibers are widely applied in energy conversion, thermoelectric cooling, temperature sensing, thermal management, and thermal imaging, and have become a research hotspot in the field of flexible thermoelectric technology. In this review, the concept and characteristics of inorganic micro-nano thermoelectric fibers are firstly introduced. Secondly the chemical and physical fabrication methods for these fibers are outlined. Then, the important properties and applications of micro-nano thermoelectric fibers are compared. Finally, the current research status of micro-nano thermoelectric fibers is summarized and the future development direction is prospected.

Abstract:With the ever-growing development of multifunctional and miniature electronics, the exploring of high-power microwatt-milliwatt self-charging technology is highly essential. Flexible thermoelectric materials and devices, utilizing small temperature difference to generate electricity, exhibit great potentials to provide the continuous power supply for wearable and implantable electronics. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of flexible thermoelectric materials, including conducting polymers, organic/inorganic hybrid composites, and fully inorganic materials. The strategies and approaches for enhancing the thermoelectric properties of different flexible materials are detailed overviewed. Besides, we highlight the advanced strategies for the design of mechanical robust flexible thermoelectric devices. In the end, we point out the challenges and outlook for the future development of flexible thermoelectric materials and devices.

Abstract:With the unique ability to directly convert thermal energy to electricity or vice versa, the thermoelectric materials have exhibited great potential applications in waste heat recovery and environmentally friendly refrigeration.In contrast to the inorganic bulk thermoelectric materials, the flexible thermoelectric materials have the advantages of being bendable, small-size, light-weight and others, which makes them applicable in fabricating portable/wearable electronic device.In the recent decade, as one of the most challenging and promising functional materials, the conductive polymers, carbon materials and inorganic nanomaterials-based flexible thermoelectric materials and devices have attracted the attention of a great number of research groups around the world.This review describes systematically the recent achievements on flexible thermoelectric materials and devices based on different materials, and the problems that need to be solved urgently in the near future.The future major ongoing areas of effort have also been suggested.A large number of literatures have demonstrated that the thermoelectric performance of materials can be well-controlled through chemical synthesis and molecular design strategies, as well as morphology controlling and doping techniques.So far, research and development of the state-of-the-art flexible thermoelectric materials for practical applications still presents a considerable challenge.

Abstract:Thermoelectrics is attractive as a green and sustainable way for harnessing waste heat and cooling applications. Designing high performance thermoelectrics involves navigating the complex interplay between electronic and heat transports. This fundamentally involves understanding the scattering physics of both electrons and phonons, as well as maximizing symmetry-breaking in entropy and electronic transports. In the last two decades, thermoelectrics have progressed in leaps and bounds thanks to parallel advancements in scientific technologies and physical understandings. Figure of merit zT of 2 and above have been consistently reported in various materials, especially Chalcogenides. In this review, we provide a broad picture of physically driven optimization strategies for thermoelectric materials, with emphasis on electronic transport aspect of inorganic materials. We also discuss and analyzes various newly coined metrics such as quality factors, electronics quality factor, electronic fitness function, weighted mobility, and Fermi surface complexity factor. More importantly, we look at the non-trivial interdependencies between various physical parameters even at a very fundamental level. Moving forward, we discuss the outlook for the potential of 3D printing and device oriented research in thermoelectrics. The intuition derived from this review will be useful not only to guide materials selection, but also research directions in the coming years.

Abstract:In recent years, with the rapid advancement in various high-tech technologies, efficient heat dissipation has become a key issue restricting the further development of high-power-density electronic devices and components. Concurrently, the demand for thermal comfort has increased; making effective personal thermal management a current research hotspot. There is a growing demand for thermally conductive materials that are diversified and specific. Therefore, smart thermally conductive fiber materials characterized by their high thermal conductivity and smart response properties have gained increasing attention. This review provides a comprehensive overview of emerging materials and approaches in the development of smart thermally conductive fiber materials. It categorizes them into composite thermally conductive fibers filled with high thermal conductivity fillers, electrically heated thermally conductive fiber materials, thermally radiative thermally conductive fiber materials, and phase change thermally conductive fiber materials. Finally, the challenges and opportunities faced by smart thermally conductive fiber materials are discussed and prospects for their future development are presented.

Abstract:In the past few decades, organic thermoelectric materials/devices, which can exhibit remarkable potential in green energy conversion, have drawn great attention and interest due to their easy processing, light weight, intrinsically low thermal conductivity, and mechanical flexibility. Compared to traditional batteries, thermoelectric materials have high prospects as alternative power generators for harvesting green energy. Although crystalline inorganic semiconductors have dominated the fields of thermoelectric materials up to now, their practical applications are limited by their intrinsic fragility and high toxicity. The integration of organic polymers with inorganic nanoparticles has been widely employed to tailor the thermoelectric performance of polymers, which not only can combine the advantages of both components but also display interesting transport phenomena between organic polymers and inorganic nanoparticles. In this review, parameters affecting the thermoelectric properties of materials were briefly introduced. Some recently developed n-type and p-type thermoelectric films and related devices were illustrated along with their thermoelectric performance, methods of preparation, and future applications. This review will help beginners to quickly understand and master basic knowledge of thermoelectric materials, thus inspiring them to design and develop more efficient thermoelectric devices.

More importantly, with the rapid development of wearable electronic products, the demand for portable and wearable energy supply devices has significantly increased. Furthermore, the frequent occurrence of extreme weather has prompted people to rely more on-air conditioning, which aggravates the energy crisis and necessitates zero-carbon personal thermal management technology. Abstract:Wearable electronic devices have emerged as a pivotal technology in healthcare and artificial intelligence robots. Among the materials that are employed in wearable electronic devices, organic thermoelectric materials possess great application potential due to their advantages such as flexibility, easy processing ability, no working noise, being self-powered, applicable in a wide range of scenarios, etc. However, compared with classic conductive materials and inorganic thermoelectric materials, the research on organic thermoelectric materials is still insufficient. In order to improve our understanding of the potential of organic thermoelectric materials in wearable electronic devices, this paper reviews the types of organic thermoelectric materials and composites, their assembly strategies, and their potential applications in wearable electronic devices. Abstract:The innate capability of direct heat-electricity conversion endows thermoelectric (TE) materials with great application potential in the fields of low-grade heat harvesting, solid-state cooling, and sensing. Recently, the rapid development of information technology such as the Internet of Things and the popularization of wearable electronic devices have stimulated a period of prosperity for the research on flexible thermoelectric (FTE) devices. At the same time, the research on printed electronics (PEs) is expected to provide scalable and cost-effective manufacturing approaches for FTE devices. This review focuses on the recent progress in printed flexible thermoelectric (PFTE) devices and their applications. At first, the fundamental theories behind TEs and the related performance optimization strategies for FTE devices, as well as the history and applications of PEs, are introduced. Then, the state-of-the-art materials adopted in FTE devices, including materials for TE legs, solvents, dispersants, surfactants, and adhesives for printable inks/pastes, substrates, and electrodes, and the related printing methods are summarized. Subsequently, the applications and device performance of PFTE devices in thermoelectric generators (TEGs), thermoelectric coolers (TECs) and thermoelectric sensors (TESs) over the last decade are reviewed. At last, the challenges existing currently in the PFTE field are discussed and some perspectives on the future investigations toward high-performance, low-cost PFTE devices are proposed.

Abstract:Organic thermoelectric (OTE) materials have been considered to be promising candidates for large area and low-cost wearable devices owing to their tailorable molecular structure, intrinsic flexibility, and prominent solution processability. More importantly, OTE materials offer direct energy conversion from the human body, solid-state cooling at low electric consumption, and diversified functions. Herein, we summarize recent developments of OTE materials and devices for smart applications. We first review the fundamentals of OTE materials from the viewpoint of thermoelectric performance, mechanical properties and bionic functions. Second, we describe OTE devices in flexible generators, photothermoelectric detectors, self-powered sensors, and ultra-thin cooling elements. Finally, we present the challenges and perspectives on OTE materials as well as devices in wearable electronics and fascinating applications in the Internet of Things.

Abstract:Conducting polymers have drawn considerable attention in the field of wearable and implantable thermoelectric devices due to their unique advantages, including availability, flexibility, lightweight, and non-toxicity. To date, researchers have made dramatic breakthroughs in achieving high-performance thermoelectrics; however, the figure of merit ZT of conducting polymers is still far below that of the high-performance thermoelectric Bi2Te3-based alloys at room temperature. This challenge lies in the complex interrelation between electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity. In this review, we overview the state-of-the-art on conducting polymers and their thermoelectric devices, starting with the summary of the fundamentals as well as several well-accepted theoretical models. Furthermore, this review examines the key factors determining the charge transport mechanisms in this family of materials and previously reported optimization strategies are discussed and classified. Finally, this review further introduces several favourable device fabrication techniques including illustrating and demonstrating the performance of several typical thermoelectric prototypes, which highlights the bright future of polymer-based flexible thermoelectric devices in wearable and implantable electronics.
