Abstract:A new, simple method to approach enumerative questions about rational curves on rational surfaces is described. Applications include a short proof of Kontsevich's formula for plane curves and a the solution of the analogous problem for the Hirzebruch surface F_3.

Abstract: By using analytic method, we prove that there exist rational curves on compact Hermitian manifolds with positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. It confirms a question of S.-T. Yau. It is well-known that Mori proved in \cite{Mori79} that every compact complex manifold $N$ with $c_1(N)>0$ contains at least one rational curve. However, as a borderline example, we show that the standard Hopf surface $S^1\times S^3$ has a Hermitian metric with non-negative holomorphic bisectional curvature (in particular, $c_1(S^1\times S^3)\geq 0$), but it contains no rational curve.

Abstract:We answer some enumerative questions about irreducible rational curves on Hirzebruch surfaces, by combining an idea of Kontsevich with the study of the geometry of certain natural parameter spaces. Our formulas generalize Kontsevich's formula for rational plane curves of given degree.

Abstract:The blown up complex projective plane in the twelve triple points of the dual Hesse arrangement has an infinite number of irreducible rational curves of self-intersection $-1$, for short, $(-1)$-curves. In the preprint version of [Dumnicki, 2019], T. Szemberg et alii tried to keep track of plane rational curves which produce $(-1)$-curves, by applying successively to a straight line compositions taken from three different quadratic Cremona maps preserving the dual Hesse arrangement, in such a way as to produce a diagram of bifurcations. The symmetric aspect of the degrees of curves encoded in the entries of the diagram motivated them to propose the problem of to give a closed formula for the degree of the rational curve at the entry $a_{i,j}$. We solved this problem for a slightly different diagram of bifurcations of the same Cremona maps, which recover and extends the data on degrees of the original diagram. We also are able to describe the position and multiplicites of singularities of each rational curve encoded in the diagram, as well as their equations (implemented in Python and Singular softwares). Our idea is to embed the plane rational curves as components of special elements of elliptic pencils, then apply a closed formula for the degrees of the generic curves of the elliptic pencils of [Puchuri, 2013], and, from this, extract the data of the rational curves on each entry of the diagram.

Abstract:Rational conic fibrations embedded in PN and containing an irreducible curve C transverse to the fibers are classified when C is either a plane curve or a rational normal curve of any degree d . This extends our previous results concerning lines, conics and twisted cubics. To emphasize the role of linear normality, the case in which C is a non-normal rational quartic is also discussed. Moreover, the rank of the d -th jet map of the surface at all points lying on such curves is evaluated.

Abstract:We describe the moduli space of rational curves on smooth Fano varieties of coindex 3. For varieties of dimension 5 or greater, we prove the moduli space has a single irreducible component for each effective numerical class of curves. For varieties of dimension 4, we describe families of rational curves in terms of Fujita's $a$-invariant. Our results verify Lehmann and Tanimoto's Geometric Manin's Conjecture for all smooth coindex 3 Fano varieties over the complex numbers.

Severi curves of rational elliptic surfaces

Abstract:We study Severi curves parametrizing rational bisections of elliptic fibrations associated to general pencils of plane cubics. Our main results show that these Severi curves are connected and reduced, and we give an upper bound on their geometric genus using quasi-modular forms. We conjecture that these Severi curves are eventually reducible, and we formulate a precise conjecture for their degrees in $\mathbb{P}^2$, featuring a divisor sum formula for collision multiplicities of branch points.

Abstract:Parameterized algebraic curves and surfaces are widely used in geometric modeling and their manipulation is an important task in the processing of geometric models. In particular, the determination of the intersection loci between points, pieces of parameterized algebraic curves and pieces of algebraic surfaces is a key problem in this context. In this paper, we survey recent methods based on syzygies and blowup algebras for computing the image and the finite fibers of a curve or surface parameterization, more generally of a rational map. Conceptually, the main idea is to use elimination matrices, mainly built from syzygies, as representations of rational maps and to extract geometric informations from them. The construction and main properties of these matrices are first reviewed and then illustrated through several settings, each of them highlighting a particular feature of this approach that combines tools from commutative algebra, algebraic geometric and elimination theory.

Abstract:Some classes of cubic fourfolds are birational to fibrations over , where the fibers are rational surfaces. This is the case for cubics containing a plane (resp. an elliptic ruled surface), where the fibers are quadric surfaces (resp. del Pezzo sextic surfaces). It is known that the rationality of these cubic hypersurfaces is related to the rationality of these surfaces over the function field of and to the existence of rational (multi)sections of the fibrations. We study, in the moduli space of cubic fourfolds, the intersection of the divisor (resp. ) with , and , whose elements are known to be rational cubic fourfolds. We provide descriptions of the irreducible components of these intersections and give new explicit examples of rational cubics fibered in (quartic, quintic) del Pezzo surfaces or in quadric surfaces over . We also investigate the existence of rational sections for these fibrations. Under some mild assumptions on the singularities of the fibers, these properties can be translated in terms of Brauer classes on certain surfaces.

Abstract:We study the geometry of the space of rational curves on smooth complete intersections of low degree, which pass through a given set of points on the variety. The argument uses spreading out to a finite field, together with an adaptation to function fields of positive characteristic of work by Rydin Myerson on the circle method. Our work also allows us to handle weak approximation for such varieties.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with rational curves on real classical groups. Our contributions are three-fold: (i) We determine the structure of quadratic rational curves on real classical groups. As a consequence, we completely classify quadratic rational curves on $\mathrm{U}_n$, $\mathrm{O}_n(\mathbb{R})$, $\mathrm{O}_{n-1,1}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\mathrm{O}_{n-2,2}(\mathbb{R})$. (ii) We prove a decomposition theorem for rational curves on real classical groups, which can be regarded as a non-commutative generalization of the fundamental theorem of algebra and partial fraction decomposition. (iii) As an application of (i) and (ii), we generalize Kempe's Universality Theorem to rational curves on homogeneous spaces.

Abstract:We study the enumerative geometry of algebraic curves on abelian surfaces and threefolds. In the abelian surface case, the theory is parallel to the well-developed study of the reduced Gromov-Witten theory of K3 surfaces. We prove complete results in all genera for primitive classes. The generating series are quasimodular forms of pure weight. Conjectures for imprimitive classes are presented. In genus 2, the counts in all classes are proven. Special counts match the Euler characteristic calculations of the moduli spaces of stable pairs on abelian surfaces by Göttsche-Shende. A formula for hyperelliptic curve counting in terms of Jacobi forms is proven (modulo a transversality statement). For abelian threefolds, complete conjectures in terms of Jacobi forms for the generating series of curve counts in primitive classes are presented. The base cases make connections to classical lattice counts of Debarre, Goettsche, and Lange-Sernesi. Further evidence is provided by Donaldson-Thomas partition function computations for abelian threefolds. A multiple cover structure is presented. The abelian threefold conjectures open a new direction in the subject.

Nodal rational curves on Enriques surfaces of base change type

Abstract:Using lattice theory, Hulek and Schütt proved that for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$ there exists a nine-dimensional family $\mathcal{F}_m$ of K3 surfaces covering Enriques surfaces having an elliptic pencil with a rational bisection of arithmetic genus $m$. We present a purely geometrical lattice free construction of these surfaces, that allows us to prove that generically the mentioned bisections are nodal. Moreover, we show that, for every $m\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, the very general Enriques surface covered by a K3 surface in $\mathcal{F}_m$ admits a countable set of nodal rational curves of arithmetic genus $(4k^2-4k+1)m+4k^2-4k$ for every $k\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, that form a rank 8 subgroup of the automorphism group of the surface. As an application, we compute the linear class of the $n$-torsion multisection for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$ for a general rational elliptic surface.

Rational Points of some genus $3$ curves from the rank $0$ quotient strategy

Abstract:In 1922, Mordell conjectured that the set of rational points on a smooth curve $C$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ with genus $g \ge 2$ is finite. This has been proved by Faltings in 1983. However, Coleman determined in 1985 an upper bound of $#C(\mathbb{Q})$ by following Chabauty's approach which considers the special case when the Jacobian variety of $C$ has Mordell-Weil rank $< g$. In 2006, Stoll improved the Coleman's bound. Balakrishnan with her co-authors in [1] implemented the Chabauty-Coleman method to compute the rational points of genus $3$ hyperelliptic curves. Then, Hashimoto and Morrison [8] did the same work for Picard curves. But it happens that this work has not yet been done for all genus 3 curves. In this paper, we describe an algorithm to compute the complete set of rational points $C(\mathbb{Q})$ for any genus $3$ curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ that is a degree-$2$ cover of a genus $1$ curve whose Jacobian has rank $0$. We implemented this algorithm in Magma, and we ran it on approximately $40, 000$ curves selected from databases of plane quartics and genus $3$ hyperellitic curves. We discuss some interesting examples, and we exhibit curves for which the number of rational points meets the Stoll's bound

Curve classes on conic bundle threefolds and applications to rationality

Abstract:We undertake a study of conic bundle threefolds $\pi\colon X\to W$ over geometrically rational surfaces whose associated discriminant covers $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta\subset W$ are smooth and geometrically irreducible. First, we determine the structure of the group $\mathrm{CH}^2 X_{\overline{k}}$ of rational equivalence classes of curves. Precisely, we construct a Galois-equivariant group homomorphism from $\mathrm{CH}^2X_{\overline{k}}$ to a group scheme associated to the discriminant cover $\tilde{\Delta}\to \Delta$ of $X$. The target group scheme is a generalization of the Prym variety of $\tilde{\Delta}\to\Delta$ and so our result can be viewed as a generalization of Beauville's result that the algebraically trivial curve classes on $X_{\overline{k}}$ are parametrized by the Prym variety. We apply our structural result on curve classes to study the refined intermediate Jacobian torsor (IJT) obstruction to rationality introduced by Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg. The first case of interest is $W = \mathbb P^2$ and $\Delta$ is a smooth plane quartic. In this case, we show that the IJT obstruction characterizes rationality when the ground field has less arithmetic complexity (precisely, when the $2$-torsion in the Brauer group of the ground field is trivial). We also show that a hypothesis of this form is necessary by constructing, over any $k \subset\mathbb R$, a conic bundle threefold with $\Delta$ a smooth quartic where the IJT obstruction vanishes, yet $X$ is irrational over $k$.

Abstract:Complex rational curves have been used to represent circular splines as well as many classical curves including epicycloids, cardioids, Joukowski profiles, and the lemniscate of Bernoulli. Complex rational curves are known to have low degree (typically half the degree of the corresponding rational planar curve), circular precision, invariance with respect to Möbius transformations, special implicit forms, an easy detection procedure, and a fast algorithm for computing their μ-bases. But only certain very special rational planar curves are also complex rational curves. To construct a wider collection of curves with similar appealing properties, we generalize complex rational curves to hyperbolic and parabolic rational curves by invoking the hyperbolic and parabolic numbers. We show that the special properties of complex rational curves extend to these hyperbolic and parabolic rational curves. We also provide examples to flesh out the theory.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a rational surface obtained by blowing up at a configuration $\mathcal{C}$ of infinitely near points over a Hirzebruch surface $\mathbb{F}_\delta$. We prove that there exist two positive integers $a \leq b$ such that the cone of curves of $X$ is finite polyhedral and minimally generated when $\delta \geq a$, and the Cox ring of $X$ is finitely generated whenever $\delta \geq b$. The integers $a$ and $b$ depend only on a combinatorial object (a graph decorated with arrows) representing the strict transforms of the exceptional divisors, their intersections and those with the fibers and special section of $\mathbb{F}_\delta$.
