Abstract:Exceptional point (EP) has been captivated as a concept of interpreting eigenvalue degeneracy and eigenstate exchange in non-Hermitian physics. The chirality in the vicinity of EP is intrinsically preserved and usually immune to external bias or perturbation, resulting in the robustness of asymmetric backscattering and directional emission in classical wave fields. Despite recent progress in non-Hermitian thermal diffusion, all state-of-the-art approaches fail to exhibit chiral states or directional robustness in heat transport. Here we report the first discovery of chiral heat transport, which is manifested only in the vicinity of EP but suppressed at the EP of a thermal system. The chiral heat transport demonstrates significant robustness against drastically varying advections and thermal perturbations imposed. Our results reveal the chirality in heat transport process and provide a novel strategy for manipulating mass, charge, and diffusive light.
Unidirectional Rotation of Circles Driven by Chiral Active Particles

Abstract:The dynamics of two-dimensional rigid circles filled with chiral active particles are investigated by employing the overdamped Langevin dynamics simulations. Unidirectional rotation of rigid circles is observed, and the rotational angular velocity (omega') relies mainly on the length (l), the number (n(B)), and tilt angle (gamma) of boards, and the angular velocity (omega) and area fraction (rho) of chiral active particles. There are optimum values for these parameters at which the average angular velocity of circle reaches its maximum. The center-of-mass mean square displacement for circles drops by about two orders of magnitude for large angular velocity omega of chiral active particles with oscillations in the short-time regime. Our work demonstrates that nanofabricated objects with suitable designs immersed in a bath of chiral active particles can extract and rectify energy in a unidirectional motion.

Abstract:We consider a minimal model of a quantum rotator composed of a single particle confined in an harmonic potential and driven by two temperature-biased heat reservoirs. In the case the particle potential is rendered asymmetric and rotated an angle, a finite angular momentum develops, corresponding to a directed rotary motion. At variance with the classical case, the thermal fluctuations in the baths give rise to a non-vanishing average torque contribution; this is a genuine quantum effect akin to the Casimir effect. In the steady state the heat current flowing between the two baths is systematically converted into particle rotation. We derive exact expressions for the work rate and heat currents in the case where the system is driven by an external time periodic mechanical force. We show, in agreement with previous works on classical systems, that for this choice of external manipulation protocol, the rotator cannot work either as a heat pump or as a heat engine. We finally use our exact results to extend an ab-initio quantum simulation algorithm to the out-of-equilibrium regime.

Abstract:We study collective excitations in hot rotating chiral media in presence of magnetic field in kinetic theory, namely Chiral Heat Wave and its' mixings with Chiral Vortical Wave and Chiral Magnetic Wave. Our results for velocities of these waves have slight alterations from those obtained earlier. We explain the origin of these alterations and also give the most general expressions for the velocities of all these waves in hydrodynamic approach.

Abstract:Quantum heat engines and refrigerators are open quantum systems, whose dynamics can be well understood using a non-Hermitian formalism. A prominent feature of non-Hermiticity is the existence of exceptional points (EPs), which has no counterpart in closed quantum systems. It has been shown in classical systems that dynamical encirclement in the vicinity of an EP, whether the loop includes the EP or not, could lead to chiral mode conversion. Here, we show that this is valid also for quantum systems when dynamical encircling is performed in the vicinity of their Liouvillian EPs (LEPs) which include the effects of quantum jumps and associated noise - an important quantum feature not present in previous works. We demonstrate, using a Paul-trapped ultracold ion, the first chiral quantum heating and refrigeration by dynamically encircling a closed loop in the vicinity of an LEP. We witness the cycling direction to be associated with the chirality and heat release (absorption) of the quantum heat engine (quantum refrigerator). Our experiments have revealed that not only the adiabaticity-breakdown but also the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg process play an essential role during dynamic encircling, resulting in chiral thermodynamic cycles. Our observations contributes to further understanding of chiral and topological features in non-Hermitian systems and pave a way to exploring the relation between chirality and quantum thermodynamics.

Abstract:We report a theory of thermal spin pumping into proximity magnets under a transverse-bias-driven heat flow of magnons in magnetic films when the dipolar coupling to the magnetic gate is tuned to be "chiral". While there is no rectification of the magnon current in the film, we predict that chirality diverts a large percentage (50% for perfect chirality) of it into the gate. This transverse thermal spin pumping effect can be controlled by rotating the film magnetization and may help manage the heat flow in future magnonic circuits.

Abstract:We investigate the thermodynamics of a hybrid quantum device consisting of two qubits collectively interacting with a quantum rotor and coupled dissipatively to two equilibrium reservoirs at different temperatures. By modeling the dynamics and the resulting steady state of the system using a collision model, we identify the functioning of the device as a thermal engine, a refrigerator, or an accelerator. In addition, we also look into the device's capacity to operate as a heat rectifier and optimize both the rectification coefficient and the heat flow simultaneously. Kinetic analysis of a chiral granular motor

Abstract:We study the properties of a heterogeneous, chiral granular rotor that is capable of performing useful work when immersed in a bath of thermalized particles. The dynamics can be obtained in general from a numerical solution of the Boltzmann-Lorentz equation. We show that a mechanical approach gives the exact mean angular velocity in the limit of an infinitely massive rotor. We examine the dependence of the mean angular velocity on the coefficients of restitution of the two materials composing the motor. We compute the power and efficiency and compare with numerical simulations. We also perform a realistic numerical simulation of a granular rotor which shows that the presence of non uniformity of the bath density within the region where the motor rotates, and that the ratchet effect is slightly weakened, but qualitatively sustained. Finally we discuss the results in connection with recent experiments.

Abstract:Considerable effort has been directed towards the characterization of chiral mesoscale structures, as shown in chiral protein assemblies and carbon nanotubes. Here, we establish a thermally-driven hydrodynamic description for the actuation and separation of mesoscale chiral structures in a fluid medium. Cross flow of a Newtonian liquid with a thermal gradient gives rise to chiral structure propulsion and separation according to their handedness. In turn, the chiral suspension alters the liquid flow which thus acquires a transverse (chiral) velocity component. Since observation of the predicted effects requires a low degree of sophistication, our work provides an efficient and inexpensive approach to test and calibrate chiral particle propulsion and separation strategies.

Abstract:The shape of an aerosol particle strongly influences its mass and momentum transfer cross-sections, charging properties, and other physical properties. We present an explicit time-stepping procedure to simulate the rotational Brownian motion of arbitrary shaped aerosol particles by solving Euler's equation of rotation. A Langevin formulation of the rotation equations is used, wherein Brownian motion due to thermal collisions between a particle and background gas molecules is represented using a stochastic fluctuating torque and fluid resistance is included as a drag torque. To avoid singularities associated with describing the orientation of a shape with Euler angles, we employ a quaternion formulation that leads to first-order stochastic differential equations to describe the evolution of the angular position and angular velocity of a rigid body. We perform all the rotational dynamics calculations in the body-fixed frame of reference attached to the rotating shape whose basis vectors are the normalized eigenvectors of the inertia tensor of the particle. Numerical solutions to rotation under torque-free conditions, damped rotation without Brownian motion, and stochastic rotation for arbitrary shapes are presented and discussed. The presented method enables time-resolved simulation of Brownian rotation for direct comparison with experimentally measured trajectories or statistical measures. The second order accuracy of the used time-stepping procedure places a severe restriction on the timestep that can be used for obtaining accurate results. Animations of presented simulations are included for visualizing rotational motion at various gas pressures. To aid implementation, MATLAB ® codes are also provided. Abstract:Transport phenomena in spatially periodic systems far from thermal equilibrium are considered. The main emphasis is put on directed transport in so-called Brownian motors (ratchets), i.e. a dissipative dynamics in the presence of thermal noise and some prototypical perturbation that drives the system out of equilibrium without introducing a priori an obvious bias into one or the other direction of motion. Symmetry conditions for the appearance (or not) of directed current, its inversion upon variation of certain parameters, and quantitative theoretical predictions for specific models are reviewed as well as a wide variety of experimental realizations and biological applications, especially the modeling of molecular motors. Extensions include quantum mechanical and collective effects, Hamiltonian ratchets, the influence of spatial disorder, and diffusive transport.

Abstract:We consider a primary model of ac-driven Brownian motors, i.e., a classical particle placed in a spatial-time periodic potential and coupled to a heat bath. The effects of fluctuations and dissipations are studied by a time-dependent Fokker-Planck equation. The approach allows us to map the original stochastic problem onto a system of ordinary linear algebraic equations. The solution of the system provides complete information about ratchet transport, avoiding such disadvantages of direct stochastic calculations as long transients and large statistical fluctuations. The Fokker-Planck approach to dynamical ratchets is instructive and opens the space for further generalizations.

Abstract:Brownian motors and Feymann ratchets have been intensively studied in the past decades due to their significance to the foundation of statistical physics. In this work we propose a new type of Brownian motor, i.e., a self-driven motor that only utilizes the temperature difference inside and outside the motor. The motor is a container with asymmetric geometry; when filling of gas, directional motion occurs if its temperature is different from the environment. The essentially new mechanism is that the asymmetric geometry of the container may induce anisotropic thermalization, which results in a density gradient and propels the motor. The directional motion ceases untill the density gradient disappears as the inside temperature approaches the environment temperature. The same mechanism is also applied to design self-driven rotators. Possible experimental realizations are discussed.
