Sustainable Cities and Society
Abstract:Urban Heat Island (UHI) significantly hinders the sustainable development of urban cities. Effectively characterizing the spatiotemporal distribution of urban temperatures can provide the guidance for UHI mitigation, such as urban ecosystem planning and design. Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) methods are used to obtain the urban temperature distribution information. However, NWP require significant hardware resources and long computation times. Artificial intelligence approaches have been developed in expediting the weather forecasting, yet their forecasting precision remains significantly inferior to that of NWP. This study aims to construct a hybrid fast prediction model based on WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) and neural networks of Temporal Fusion Transformer (TFT). Incorporating the high-precision temperature time series boundaries generated by WRF into the TFT, this approach can enable the rapid prediction of urban temperature distributions while retaining the physical characteristics of atmospheric dynamics. Compared to WRF, WRF-TFT model predicts urban temperatures with an average error of about 0.8°C and is 15 times faster. The forecast results show that in July 2050, there are approximately 12 hours each day with temperatures exceeding 35°C. This hybrid model can realize the rapid acquisition of urban temperature changing trends, providing an important basis for urban risk management and urban planning.
