Abstract:Plants synthesize various hormones in response to environmental cues and developmental signals to ensure their proper growth and development. Elucidation of the molecular mechanisms by which plant hormones control growth and development contributes to our understanding of fundamental plant biology and provides tools to improve crops. Because of their critical roles in plant growth and development, plant hormones have been studied extensively since the early days of plant biology. Indeed, much progress has been achieved in the past decade. Receptors for all of the classic plant hormones including auxin, abscisic acid (ABA), brassinolide (BL), cytokinin (CK), ethylene, jasmonate (JA), and gibberellin (GA) have been identified. However, the detailed mechanisms of how plant hormones modulate plant growth and development are far from completely understood. Hormone functions are regulated at the levels of synthesis, degradation, transport, and signaling. Moreover, plant hormones often display crosstalk with other hormones, environmental signals such as light, and other pathways. Articles in this special issue reflect the complexity of plant hormones. The following selected expert reviews and research papers update the current status of plant hormone research while contextualizing them with some historic perspectives. A main point presented in several papers is that crosstalk among plant hormones is a common theme and that crosstalk is important for many biological processes. An et al. (2011) detailed the interactions between SA and other classic hormones including auxin, ethylene, JA, ABA, and GA. The interaction between SA and auxin is particularly intriguing because it sheds light on the mechanisms that allow either plants or pathogens get an upper hand in the immunological arms race by modulating the two hormones. The SA- and auxin interaction appears to occur at the level of hormone conjugation and signal transduction. The review article by Hoffmann et al. (2011) highlights the crosstalk between auxin and JA, which is puzzling because the two hormones often have antagonistic effects. Hoffmann et al. (2011) used JA/auxin crosstalk as an example to discuss three categories of crosstalks: direct crosstalk, indirect crosstalk, and co-regulation. In addition, it is worth noting that crosstalk is not limited to hormones. Skylar et al. (2011) discussed the roles of crosstalk between cytokinin and sugar in meristem proliferation. Meanwhile, in the research article by Mai et al. (2011), auxin is linked to the flowering time pathway. Two review articles summarized the recent exciting progress in BL signaling and ABA signaling. Great progress has been made in elucidating the signal transduction mechanisms of BL, which is clearly described by Ye et al. (2011). BL binds its receptor at the cell surface and eventually regulates gene expression in the nucleus. A prominent feature of BL signaling is the involvement of at least three protein kinases and several phosphatases. Guo et al. (2011) elegantly discussed the recent findings in ABA signaling, a field that has generated many confusions as five putative ABA receptors have been identified. The expert review by Guo et al. (2011) clarified some of the confusions and provided a better understanding of the ABA signaling mechanism. Lastly, Zhang et al. (2011) presented evidence to show that transcription factor WOX1 is possibly involved in the regulation of shoot apical meristem (SAM) development by interacting with SAMDC1, a biosynthesis enzyme for polyamines. This interesting work raised the possibility that polyamines, a type of potential phytohormones, are involved in SAM development. Plant hormones are essential for plant growth and development. We hope that the articles in this special issue will allow readers to gain a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms through which various phytohormones interact to control plant growth and behavior.

Abstract:As small organic molecules, plant hormones play vital roles in the growth and development of global plants, but their activity is concentration dependent. Accurate determination of real time concentrations in certain plant tissues is hence the key to understand their exact functions however the lack of analytical methodology currently forms a bottleneck to acquire such information. The greatest challenge is how to locate and quantify the trace and/or ultra-trace target components from limited quantities of fresh samples or directly from living plant tissues. This has led to numerous studies and breakthroughs throughout the world, however the research progress has yet to be summarized. Thus, this review is intended to synthesize the latest progress and discuss prospective trends and potential future research in this field.

Abstract:Phytohormones, pivotal regulators of plant growth and development, are increasingly recognized for their multifaceted roles in enhancing crop resilience against environmental stresses. In this review, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of current research on utilizing phytohormones to enhance crop productivity and fortify their defence mechanisms. Initially, we introduce the significance of phytohormones in orchestrating plant growth, followed by their potential utilization in bolstering crop defences against diverse environmental stressors. Our focus then shifts to an in‐depth exploration of phytohormones and their pivotal roles in mediating plant defence responses against biotic stressors, particularly insect pests. Furthermore, we highlight the potential impact of phytohormones on agricultural production while underscoring the existing research gaps and limitations hindering their widespread implementation in agricultural practices. Despite the accumulating body of research in this field, the integration of phytohormones into agriculture remains limited. To address this discrepancy, we propose a comprehensive framework for investigating the intricate interplay between phytohormones and sustainable agriculture. This framework advocates for the adoption of novel technologies and methodologies to facilitate the effective deployment of phytohormones in agricultural settings and also emphasizes the need to address existing research limitations through rigorous field studies. By outlining a roadmap for advancing the utilization of phytohormones in agriculture, this review aims to catalyse transformative changes in agricultural practices, fostering sustainability and resilience in agricultural settings.

Abstract:The capacity of rhizoshere bacteria to influence plant hormonal status, by bacterial production or metabolism of hormones, is considered an important mechanism by which they promote plant growth, and productivity. Nevertheless, inoculating these bacteria into the plant rhizosphere may produce beneficial or detrimental results depending on bacterial effects on hormone composition and quantity in planta, and the environmental conditions under which the plants are growing. This review considers some effects of bacterial hormone production or metabolism on root growth and development and shoot physiological processes. We analyze how these changes in root and shoot growth and function help plants adapt to their growth conditions, especially as these change from optimal to stressful. Consistent effects are addressed, along with plant responses to specific environmental stresses: drought, salinity, and soil contamination (with petroleum in particular).

Abstract:Food safety has become an attractive topic among consumers. Raw material production for food is also a focus of social attention. As hormones are widely used in agriculture and human disease control, consumers' concerns about the safety of hormone agents have never disappeared. The present review focuses on the interkingdom regulations of exogenous animal hormones in plants and phytohormones in animals, including physiology and stress resistance. We summarize these interactions to give the public, researchers, and policymakers some guidance and suggestions. Accumulated evidence demonstrates comprehensive hormonal regulation across plants and animals. Animal hormones, interacting with phytohormones, help regulate plant development and enhance environmental resistance. Correspondingly, phytohormones may also cause damage to the reproductive and urinary systems of animals. Notably, the disease-resistant role of phytohormones is revealed against neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. These resistances derive from the control for abnormal cell cycle, energy balance, and activity of enzymes. Further exploration of these cross-kingdom mechanisms would surely be of greater benefit to human health and agriculture development.

Abstract:Phytohormones (PHs) play crucial role in regulation of various physiological and biochemical processes that govern plant growth and yield under optimal and stress conditions. The interaction of these PHs is crucial for plant survival under stressful environments as they trigger signaling pathways. Hormonal cross regulation initiate a cascade of reactions which finely tune the physiological processes in plant architecture that help plant to grow under suboptimal growth conditions. Recently, various studies have highlighted the role of PHs such as abscisic acid, salicylic acid, ethylene, and jasmonates in the plant responses toward environmental stresses. The involvement of cytokinins, gibberellins, auxin, and relatively novel PHs such as strigolactones and brassinosteroids in plant growth and development has been documented under normal and stress conditions. The recent identification of the first plant melatonin receptor opened the door to this regulatory molecule being considered a new plant hormone. However, polyamines, which are not considered PHs, have been included in this chapter. Various microbes produce and secrete hormones which helped the plants in nutrient uptake such as N, P, and Fe. Exogenous use of such microbes help plants in correcting nutrient deficiency under abiotic stresses. This chapter focused on the recent developments in the knowledge related to PHs and their involvement in abiotic stresses of anticipation, signaling, cross-talk, and activation of response mechanisms. In view of role of hormones and capability of microbes in producing hormones, we propose the use of hormones and microbes as potential strategy for crop stress management.

Abstract:Phytohormones, as crucial regulatory factors in plant growth and development, have garnered increased interest in improving crop stress resistance. It is essential to comprehend the distribution of phytohormones in plants to assess their health status and investigate their functions. This knowledge also serves as a guide for developing and using plant growth regulators. The advancement of fluorescent probe technology, along with the wide range of fluorophores and improvements in imaging methods, has made it a successful approach for monitoring phytohormones in plants. This technique has been confirmed to be effective in plants, particularly in detecting the response of fluorescent probes to phytohormones. In this Perspective, we highlight the utility of fluorescent probes in measuring and visualizing the distribution of phytohormones in plants under external stress. However, the visualization of phytohormones with high spatial resolution and the achievement of high biocompatibility in living plants have posed significant challenges for researchers. Nonetheless, there are also many untapped opportunities in this field. This paper seeks to delve into the potential for further discussion on the subject.

Abstract:Sulfur (S), one of the crucial macronutrients, plays a pivotal role in fundamental plant processes and the regulation of diverse metabolic pathways. Additionally, it has a major function in plant protection against adverse conditions by enhancing tolerance, often interacting with other molecules to counteract stresses. Despite its significance, a thorough comprehension of how plants regulate S nutrition and particularly the involvement of phytohormones in this process remains elusive. Phytohormone signaling pathways crosstalk to modulate growth and developmental programs in a multifactorial manner. Additionally, S availability regulates the growth and development of plants through molecular mechanisms intertwined with phytohormone signaling pathways. Conversely, many phytohormones influence or alter S metabolism within interconnected pathways. S metabolism is closely associated with phytohormones such as abscisic acid (ABA), auxin (AUX), brassinosteroids (BR), cytokinins (CK), ethylene (ET), gibberellic acid (GA), jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and strigolactones (SL). This review provides a summary of the research concerning the impact of phytohormones on S metabolism and, conversely, how S availability affects hormonal signaling. Although numerous molecular details are yet to be fully understood, several core signaling components have been identified at the crossroads of S and major phytohormonal pathways.

Abstract:The growth of multicellular organisms relies on cell proliferation, elongation and differentiation that are tightly regulated throughout development by internal and external stimuli. The plasticity of a growth response largely depends on the capacity of the organism to adjust the ratio between cell proliferation and cell differentiation. The primary root of Arabidopsis thaliana offers many advantages toward understanding growth homeostasis as root cells are continuously produced and move from cell proliferation to elongation and differentiation that are processes spatially separated and could be studied along the longitudinal axis. Hormones fine tune plant growth responses and a huge amount of information has been recently generated on the role of these compounds in Arabidopsis primary root development. In this review, we summarized the participation of nine hormones in the regulation of the different zones and domains of the Arabidopsis primary root. In some cases, we found synergism between hormones that function either positively or negatively in proliferation, elongation or differentiation. Intriguingly, there are other cases where the interaction between hormones exhibits unexpected results. Future analysis on the molecular mechanisms underlying crosstalk hormone action in specific zones and domains will unravel their coordination over PR development.

Abstract:The current status of changing climate has become a significant threat to the global production of horticultural crops. Phytohormones play a crucial role in providing a sophisticated mechanism to circumvent stress at different morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. Phytohormone mediates the abiotic stress-responsive signalling pathway and modulates other cell wall repair mechanisms, pH regulations, root hair formation, ionic homeostasis, chlorophyll content, synthesis, and leaf morphology. Auxin, cytokinin, ethylene, strigolactones, brassinosteroid, salicylic acid, abscisic acid, jasmonic acid, and other phytohormones have also had other phytohormones recently been discovered to play a vital role in the production of abiotic stress-tolerant crops. Moreover, recently discovered phytohormone-like plant growth regulators such as polyamines, sugars, neurotransmitters, and strigolactones are an effective strategy to mitigate biotic and abiotic stress. Recent studies revealed the role of different phytohormone-like plant growth regulators and network signalling pathway that targets transcription factors and stress-related genes. Understanding the complex phytohormonal crosstalk in horticultural crops under various abiotic stress conditions will advance the knowledge about the synergistic/antagonistic role of developing stress-tolerant cultivars. Review on modulation of plant growth and development process by regulation of gene expression mediated by different phytohormones in horticultural crops is elusive. In this context, our review focusses on the role of phytohormone-like plant growth regulators and associated crosstalk among each other in plant growth and development under abiotic stress condition.

Abstract:Flowering time is a crucial developmental stage in the life cycle of plants, as it determines the reproductive success and overall fitness of the organism. The precise regulation of flowering time is influenced by various internal and external factors, including genetic, environmental, and hormonal cues. This review provided a comprehensive overview of the molecular mechanisms and regulatory pathways of biological macromolecules (e.g. proteins and phytohormone) and environmental factors (e.g. light and temperature) involved in the control of flowering time in plants. We discussed the key proteins and signaling pathways that govern the transition from vegetative growth to reproductive development, highlighting the intricate interplay between genetic networks, environmental cues, and phytohormone signaling. Additionally, we explored the impact of flowering time regulation on plant adaptation, crop productivity, and agricultural practices. Moreover, we summarized the similarities and differences of flowering mechanisms between annual and perennial plants. Understanding the mechanisms underlying flowering time control is not only essential for fundamental plant biology research but also holds great potential for crop improvement and sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:During the development of angiosperms, one of the most critical stages of plants is the transition from vegetative to reproductive stage, and successfully producing seeds is necessary. Plants have developed a complex signaling pathway to recognize and combine endogenous and environmental signals. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) play a role in regulating flower growth on shoots. Physiological and biochemical processes work together to differentiate and produce flower buds. The impact of PGRs on floral bud differentiation has been the subject of several publications in recent years. In addition, the dynamic variations in gibberellin (GA), auxin, and cytokinin levels in buds and the hormonal-related signatures in gene regulatory networks indicate a crucial function for these hormones during floral bud development in plants. Especially the flowering hormone GA has a key role in regulating the activities related to flowering genes as well as controlling the activity of the DELLA protein. Abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene (ET) have an inhibitory role in flowering but in some cases stimulate flowering depending on environmental conditions. This study aims to understand the regulation of phytohormones on flowering of plants and its effects on plant development during the flowering stage.
