Abstract:We study a minimalist kinetic model for economies. A system of agents with local trading rules display emergent demand behaviour. We examine the resulting wealth distribution to look for non-thermal behaviour. We compare and contrast this model with other similar models.

Abstract:In this article, we briefly review the different aspects and applications of kinetic exchange models in economics and sociology. Our main aim is to show in what manner the kinetic exchange models for closed economic systems were inspired by the kinetic theory of gas molecules. The simple yet powerful framework of kinetic theory, first proposed in 1738, led to the successful development of statistical physics of gases towards the end of the 19th century. This framework was successfully adapted to modeling of wealth distributions in the early 2000's. In later times, it was applied to other areas like firm dynamics and opinion formation in the society, as well. We have tried to present the flavour of the several models proposed and their applications, intentionally leaving out the intricate mathematical and technical details.

Abstract:A very important class of models widely used nowadays to describe and predict, at least in stochastic terms, the behavior of many-particle systems (where the word "particle" is not meant in the purely mechanical sense: particles can be cells of a living tissue, or cars in a traffic flow, or even members of an animal or human population) is the Kinetic Theory for Active Particles, i.e., a scheme of possible generalizations and re-interpretations of the Boltzmann equation. Now, though in the literature on the subject this point is systematically disregarded, this scheme is based on Markov Chains, which are special stochastic processes with important properties they share with many natural processes. This circumstance is here carefully discussed not only to suggest the different ways in which Markov Chains can intervene in equations describing the stochastic behavior of any many-particle system, but also, as a preliminary methodological step, to point out the way in which the notion of a Markov Chain can be suitably generalized to this aim. As a final result of the discussion, we find how to develop new very plausible and likely ways to take into account possible effects of the external world on a non-isolated many-particle system, with particular attention paid to socio-economic problems.

Abstract:Economic systems are similar with physic systems for their large number of individuals and the exist of equilibrium. In this paper, we present a model applying the equilibrium statistical model in economic systems. Consistent with statistical physics, we define a series of concepts, such as economic temperature, economic pressure, economic potential, wealth and population. Moreover, we suggest that these parameters show pretty close relationship with the concepts in economy. This paper presents related concepts in the equilibrium economic model and constructs significant theorems and corollaries, which is derived from the priori possibility postulate, getting theorems including the equilibrium theorem between open systems, the distribution theorem of wealth and population along with related corollaries. More importantly, we demonstrate a method constructing optimal density of states, optimizing a macroscopic parameter depending on need to get the distribution of density of states utilizing the variation method, which is significant for the development of a society. In addition, we calculate a simple economic system as an example, indicating that the system occupied mostly by the middle class could develop stably and soundly, explaining the reason for resulting distributions of macroscopic parameters.

This class of models can be easily adapted for simulations in areas other than physics, such as the modeling of income and wealth distributions in economics and opinion dynamics in sociology.

A non-conservative kinetic framework for a closed-market society subject to shock events

Abstract:Recently, several events have shockingly impacted society, carrying tough consequences. This was evident in the recent COVID-19 pandemic. However, not all individuals are affected by shock events in the same way. Among other factors, the consequences can vary depending on the wealth class. In our presented work, the approach typical of kinetic theory is used to analyze the dynamics of a closed-market society exposed to various types of shock events. To achieve this, we introduce non-conservative equations, incorporating proliferative and destructive binary interactions as well as external actions. Specifically, the latter term reproduces the shock events, and to accomplish this, we introduce an appropriate external force field into the kinetic framework, modeled using Gaussian functions. Several numerical simulations exploring different scenarios are presented to illustrate the behavior of the solution predicted by the model and to gain some insights when complex situations are investigated.

Abstract:A thermodynamic approach to the description of economic systems and processes is developed. It is shown that there is a deep analogy between the parameters of thermodynamic and economic systems (markets); so each thermodynamic parameter can be associated with a certain economic parameter or indicator. The economic meaning of such primordially thermodynamic concepts as internal energy and temperature has been established. It is shown that many economic laws, which in economic theory are a generalization of the results of observations, or are based on the analysis of the psychology of the behavior of market actors, within the framework of economic thermodynamics can be obtained as the natural and formal results of the theory. In particular, we show that economic thermodynamics allows a natural description of such a phenomenon as inflation. The thermodynamic conditions of market equilibrium stability are derived and analyzed, as well as the Le Chatelier's principle as applied to economic systems.

The Kinetics of Wealth and the Origin of the Pareto Law

Abstract:An important class of economic models involve agents whose wealth changes due to transactions with other agents. Several authors have pointed out an analogy with kinetic theory, which describes molecules whose momentum and energy changes due to interactions with other molecules. We pursue this analogy and derive a Boltzmann equation for the time evolution of the wealth distribution of a population of agents for the so-called Yard-Sale Model of wealth exchange. We examine the solutions to this equation by a combination of analytical and numerical methods, and investigate its long-time limit. We study an important limit of this equation for small transaction sizes, and derive a partial integrodifferential equation governing the evolution of the wealth distribution in a closed economy. We then describe how this model may be extended to include features such as inflation, production and taxation. In particular, we show that the model with taxation is capable of explaining the basic features of the Pareto law, namely a lower cutoff to the wealth density at small values of wealth, and approximate power-law behavior at large values of wealth.

Kinetic models for the trading of goods

Abstract:In this paper we introduce kinetic equations for the evolution of the probability distribution of two goods among a huge population of agents. The leading idea is to describe the trading of these goods by means of some fundamental rules in price theory, in particular by using Cobb-Douglas utility functions for the binary exchange, and the Edgeworth box for the description of the common exchange area in which utility is increasing for both agents. This leads to a Boltzmann-type equation in which the post-interaction variables depend in a nonlinear way from the pre-interaction ones. Other models will be derived, by suitably linearizing this Boltzmann equation. In presence of uncertainty in the exchanges, it is shown that the solution to some of the linearized kinetic equations develop Pareto tails, where the Pareto index depends on the ratio between the gain and the variance of the uncertainty. In particular, the result holds true for the solution of a drift-diffusion equation of Fokker-Planck type, obtained from the linear Boltzmann equation as the limit of quasi-invariant trades.

Abstract:Boltzmann equation requires some alternative simpler kinetic model like BGK to replace the collision term. Such a kinetic model which replaces the Boltzmann collision integral should preserve the basic properties and characteristics of the Boltzmann equation and comply with the requirements of non equilibrium thermodynamics. Most of the research in development of kinetic theory based methods have focused more on entropy conditions, stability and ignored the crucial aspect of non equilibrium thermodynamics. The paper presents a new kinetic model formulated based on the principles of non equilibrium thermodynamics. The new kinetic model yields correct transport coefficients and satisfies Onsager's reciprocity relationship. The present work also describes a novel kinetic particle method and gas kinetic scheme based on this linkage of non-equilibrium thermodynamics and kinetic theory. The work also presents derivation of kinetic theory based wall boundary condition which complies with the principles of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and can simulate both continuum and rarefied slip flow in order to avoid extremely costly multi-scale simulation.

Abstract:This study presents a novel approach to modelling economic agents as analogous to spin states in physics, particularly the Ising model. By associating economic activity with spin orientations (up for inactivity, down for activity), the study delves into optimizing market dynamics using concepts from statistical mechanics. Utilizing Monte Carlo simulations, the aim is to maximize surplus by allowing the market to evolve freely toward equilibrium. The introduction of temperature represents the frequency of economic activities, which is crucial for optimizing consumer and producer surplus. The government's role as a temperature regulator (raising temperature to stimulate economic activity) is explored. Results from simulations and policy interventions, such as introducing a "magnetic field," are discussed, showcasing complexities in optimizing economic systems while avoiding undue control that may destabilize markets. The study provides insights into bridging concepts from physics and economics, paving the way for a deeper understanding of economic dynamics and policy interventions.

Abstract:Recent technological development has enabled researchers to study social phenomena scientifically in detail and financial markets has particularly attracted physicists since the Brownian motion has played the key role as in physics. In our previous report (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1703.06739" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1703.06739">arXiv:1703.06739</a>; to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett.), we have presented a microscopic model of trend-following high-frequency traders (HFTs) and its theoretical relation to the dynamics of financial Brownian motion, directly supported by a data analysis of tracking trajectories of individual HFTs in a financial market. Here we show the mathematical foundation for the HFT model paralleling to the traditional kinetic theory in statistical physics. We first derive the time-evolution equation for the phase-space distribution for the HFT model exactly, which corresponds to the Liouville equation in conventional analytical mechanics. By a systematic reduction of the Liouville equation for the HFT model, the Bogoliubov-Born-Green-Kirkwood-Yvon hierarchal equations are derived for financial Brownian motion. We then derive the Boltzmann-like and Langevin-like equations for the order-book and the price dynamics by making the assumption of molecular chaos. The qualitative behavior of the model is asymptotically studied by solving the Boltzmann-like and Langevin-like equations for the large number of HFTs, which is numerically validated through the Monte-Carlo simulation. Our kinetic description highlights the parallel mathematical structure between the financial Brownian motion and the physical Brownian motion.

Stochastic Effects in a Discretized Kinetic Model of Economic Exchange

Abstract:Linear stochastic models and discretized kinetic theory are two complementary analytical techniques used for the investigation of complex systems of economic interactions. The former employ Langevin equations, with an emphasis on stock trade; the latter is based on systems of ordinary differential equations and is better suited for the description of binary interactions, taxation and welfare redistribution. We propose a new framework which establishes a connection between the two approaches by introducing stochastic effects into the kinetic model based on Langevin and Fokker-Planck formalisms. Numerical simulations of the resulting model indicate positive correlations between the Gini index and the total wealth, that suggests a growing inequality with increasing income. Further analysis shows a simultaneous decrease in inequality as social mobility increases in presence of a conserved total wealth, in conformity with economic data.

Abstract:Between the two world wars, a group of Italian mathematicians, statisticians and economists set out to use the tools of statistical mechanics to interpret the Pareto income distribution curve as a probability distribution. Models based on Boltzmann's thermal equilibrium were independently developed to find an economic variable, comparable to the kinetic energy of gas theory, that could explain the heavy tail of the Pareto curve. The various avenues explored eventually led them back to Pareto's much debated explanation, namely that the hyperbolic distribution of income was due to the unequal distribution of talent.

Abstract:Economic engineering is a new field wherein economic systems are modelled in the same manner as traditional mechanical and electrical engineering systems. In this paper, we use Newton's theory of motion as the basis for the theory of demand; thereby establishing a theoretical foundation for economic engineering. We follow Newton's original development, as set forth in the Principia, to determine economic analogs to his three laws of motion. The pivotal result is an operational definition for an economic force, i.e. a want or a desire, in terms of a price adjustment. With this, we model the price effects of scarcity and trade friction in analogy with the models for the spring and damping force. In turn, we define economic benefits and surplus as analogous to the definitions of mechanical work and energy. These are then used to interpret the various types of economic equilibrium considered by economists from a mechanical perspective. The effectiveness of the analogy is illustrated by applying it to modelling the price and inventory dynamics of various economic agents -- including consumers, dealers, holders, spot and futures traders -- using linear-time invariant systems theory.

Abstract:<p>The analogies between economics and classical mechanics can be extended from constrained optimization to constrained dynamics by formalizing economic (constraint) forces and economic power in analogy to physical (constraint) forces in Lagrangian mechanics. In the differential-algebraic equation framework of General Constrained Dynamics (GCD), households, firms, banks, and the government employ forces to change economic variables according to their desire and their power to assert their interest. These ex-ante forces are completed by constraint forces from unanticipated system constraints to yield the ex-post dynamics. The flexible out-of-equilibrium model can combine Keynesian concepts such as the balance sheet approach and slow adaptation of prices and quantities with bounded rationality (gradient climbing) and interacting agents discussed in behavioral economics and agent-based models. The framework integrates some elements of different schools of thought and overcomes some restrictions inherent to optimization approaches, such as the assumption of markets operating in or close to equilibrium. Depending on the parameter choice for power relations and adaptation speeds, the model nevertheless can converge to a neoclassical equilibrium, and reacts to an austerity shock in a neoclassical or post-Keynesian way.</p>

Abstract:Thermokinetic relations bound thermodynamic quantities, such as entropy production of a physical system over a certain time interval, with statistics of kinetic (or dynamical) observables, such as mean total variation of the observable over the time interval. We introduce a thermokinetic relation to bound the entropy production or the nonadiabatic (or excess) entropy production for overdamped Markov jump processes, possibly with time-varying rates and nonstationary distributions. For stationary cases, this bound is akin to a thermodynamic uncertainty relation, only involving absolute fluctuations rather than the mean square, thereby offering a better lower bound far from equilibrium. For nonstationary cases, this bound generalizes (classical) speed limits, where the kinetic term is not necessarily the activity (number of jumps) but any trajectory observable of interest. As a consequence, in the task of driving a system from a given probability distribution to another, we find a tradeoff between nonadiabatic entropy production and housekeeping entropy production: the latter can be increased to decrease the former, although to a limited extent. We also find constraints specific to constant-rate Markov processes. Abstract:This is a continuation of the previous work (Takata & Noguchi, J. Stat. Phys., 2018) that introduces the presumably simplest model of kinetic theory for phase transition. Here, main concern is to clarify the stability of uniform equilibrium states in the kinetic regime, rather than that in the continuum limit. It is found by the linear stability analysis that the linear neutral curve is invariant with respect to the Knudsen number, though the transition process is dependent on the Knudsen number. In addition, numerical computations of the (nonlinear) kinetic model are performed to investigate the transition processes in detail. Numerical results show that (unexpected) incomplete transitions may happen as well as clear phase transitions.

Abstract:Existence theory in economics is usually in real domains such as the findings of chaotic trajectories in models of economic growth, tatonnement, or overlapping generations models. Computational examples, however, sometimes converge rapidly to cyclic orbits when in theory they should be nonperiodic almost surely. We explain this anomaly as the result of digital approximation and conclude that both theoretical and numerical behavior can still illuminate essential features of the real data.
