Abstract:In a previous paper, we studied certain sequences of simultaneous rational approximations in ${\bf R}^2$ which present some analogy with the continued fractions. We got results around the Littlewood conjecture by using such approximations. Here we show that such results also hold when we add divisibility conditions.

Abstract:In this paper we present a new approach to prove effective results in Diophantine approximation. This approach involves measures of local positivity of divisors combined with Faltings's version of Siegel's lemma instead of a zero estimate such as Dyson's lemma. We then use it to prove an effective theorem on the simultaneous approximation of two algebraic numbers satisfying an algebraic equation with complex coefficients.

Abstract:Let lambda_1, \lambda_2, \lambda_3, \lambda_4 be non-zero real numbers, not all negative, with \lambda_1/\lambda_2 irrational and algebraic. Suppose that \mathcal{V} is a well-spaced sequence and \delta >0. In this paper, it is proved that for any \varepsilon >0, the number of v \in \mathcal{V} with v \leqslant N for which |\lambda_1 p_1^2 + \lambda_2 p_2^3+ \lambda_3 p_3^4+ \lambda_4 p_4^5 - v| < v^{-\delta} has no solution in prime variables p_1,p_2,p_3,p_4 does not exceed O\big(N^{\frac{359}{378} + 2\delta +\varepsilon}\big). This result constitutes an improvement upon that of Q. W. Mu and Z. P. Gao [12].

Diophantine Approximation in local function fields via Bruhat-Tit trees

Abstract:We use the theory of arithmetic quotients of the Bruhat-Tits tree developed by Serre and others to obtain Dirichlet-style theorems for Diophantine approximation on global function fields. This approach allows us to find sharp values for the constants involved and, occasionally, explicit examples of badly approximable quadratic irrationals. Additionally, we can use this method to easily compute the measure of the set of elements that can be written as the limit of a sequence of ``better than expected'' approximants. All these results can be easily obtained via continued fractions when they are available, so that quotient graphs can be seen as a partial replacement of them when this fails to be the case.

Inhomogeneous Diophantine Approximation on $M_0$-sets

Abstract:We prove new quantitative Schmidt-type theorem for Diophantine approximations with restraint denominators on fractals (more precisely, on $M_0$-sets). Our theorems introduce a sharp balance condition between the growth rate of the sequence of denominators and the decay rate of the Fourier transform of a Rajchman measure. Among the other things, this allows applications to sequences of denominators of polynomial growth. In particular, we infer new inhomogeneous Khintchine-Järnik type theorems with restraint denominators for a broad family of denominator sequences. Furthermore, our results provide non-trivial lower bounds for Hausdorff dimensions of intersections of two sets of inhomogeneously well-approximable numbers with restraint denominators.

Abstract:This paper introduces some methods to determine the simultaneous approximation constants of a class of well approximable numbers $\zeta_{1},\zeta_{2},...,\zeta_{k}$. The approach relies on results on the connection between the set of all $s$-adic expansions ($s\geq 2$) of $\zeta_{1},\zeta_{2},...,\zeta_{k}$ and their associated approximation constants. As an application, explicit construction of real numbers $\zeta_{1},\zeta_{2},...,\zeta_{k}$ with prescribed approximation properties are deduced and illustrated by Matlab plots.

Abstract:Let $\{a_n\}_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$, $\{b_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{N}}$ be two infinite subsets of positive integers and $\psi:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}_{>0}$ be a positive function. We completely determine the Hausdorff dimensions of the set of all points $(x,y)\in [0,1]^2$ which satisfy $\|a_nx\|\|b_ny\|<\psi(n)$ infinitely often, and the set of all $x\in [0,1]$ satisfying $\|a_nx\|\|b_nx\|<\psi(n)$ infinitely often. This is based on establishing general convergence results for Hausdorff measures of these two sets. We also obtain some results on the set of all $x\in [0,1]$ such that $\max\{\|a_nx\|, \|b_nx\|\}<\psi(n)$ infinitely often.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of counting Diophantine inequalities with multiple natural constraints. We prove a very general result in this setting using dynamical techniques. More precisely, we consider the joint asymptotic distribution of $\varepsilon$-Diophantine approximates of matrices in several aspects. Our main results describe the resulting limiting measures for almost every matrix. Multiplicative Diophantine approximation is treated for the first time and a number of Diophantine corollaries are derived. While we treat the general case of approximation of matrices, our results are already new for the case of simultaneous Diophantine approximation of vectors. Our approach is dynamical and is based on the construction of an appropriate Poincaré section for certain diagonal group actions on the space of unimodular lattices along with multiple mixing. The main new idea in our paper is a method which allows us to treat actions of higher rank groups.

A New Diophantine Approximation Inequality on Surfaces and Its Applications

Abstract:We prove a Diophantine approximation inequality for closed subschemes on surfaces which can be viewed as a joint generalization of recent inequalities of Ru-Vojta and Heier-Levin in this context. As applications, we study various Diophantine problems on affine surfaces given as the complement of three numerically parallel ample projective curves: inequalities involving greatest common divisors, degeneracy of integral points, and related Diophantine equations including families of S-unit equations. We state analogous results in the complex analytic setting, where our main result is an inequality of Second Main Theorem type for surfaces, with applications to the study and value distribution theory of holomorphic curves in surfaces.

Abstract:In a paper from 2010, Budarina, Dickinson and Levesley studied the rational approximation properties of curves parametrized by polynomials with integral coefficients in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. Assuming the dimension is at least three and excluding the case of linear dependence of the polynomials together with $P(X)\equiv 1$ over the rational number field, we establish proper generalizations of their main result.

Abstract:Let $E\subset [0,1]$ be a set that supports a probability measure $\mu$ with the property that $|\widehat{\mu}(t)|\ll (\log |t|)^{-A}$ for some constant $A>2.$ Let $\mathcal{A}=(q_n)_{n\in \N}$ be a positive, real-valued, lacunary sequence. We present a quantitative inhomogeneous Khintchine-type theorem in which the points of interest are restricted to $E$ and the denominators of the shifted fractions are restricted to $\mathcal{A}.$ Our result improves and extends a previous result in this direction obtained by Pollington-Velani-Zafeiropoulos-Zorin (2022). We also show that the Dirichlet non-improvable set VS well-approximable set is of positive Fourier dimension.

Abstract:Given a monotonically decreasing $\psi: \mathbb{N} \to [0,\infty)$, Khintchine's Theorem provides an efficient tool to decide whether, for almost every $\alpha \in \mathbb{R}$, there are infinitely many $(p,q) \in \mathbb{Z}^2$ such that $\left\lvert \alpha - \frac{p}{q}\right\rvert \leq \frac{\psi(q)}{q}$. The recent result of Koukoulopoulos and Maynard provides an elegant way of removing monotonicity when only counting reduced fractions. Gallagher showed a multiplicative higher-dimensional generalization to Khintchine's Theorem, again assuming monotonicity. In this article, we prove the following Duffin-Schaeffer-type result for multiplicative approximations: For any $k\geq 1$, any function $\psi: \mathbb{N} \to [0,1/2]$ (not necessarily monotonic) and almost every $\alpha \in \mathbb{R}^k$, there exist infinitely many $q$ such that $\prod\limits_{i=1}^k \left\lvert \alpha_i - \frac{p_i}{q}\right\rvert \leq \frac{\psi(q)}{q^k}, p_1,\ldots,p_k$ all coprime to $q$, if and only if \[\sum\limits_{q \in \mathbb{N}} \psi(q) \left(\frac{\varphi(q)}{q} \right)^k\log \left(\frac{q}{\varphi(q)\psi(q)}\right)^{k-1} = \infty.\] This settles a conjecture of Beresnevich, Haynes, and Velani.

Abstract:In 1982, A. K. Lenstra, H. W. Lenstra, and L. Lovász introduced the first polynomial-time method to factor a nonzero polynomial $f \in \mathbb{Q}[x]$ into irreducible factors. This algorithm, now commonly referred to as the LLL Algorithm, can also be applied to compute simultaneous Diophantine approximations. We present a significant improvement of a result by Bosma and Smeets on the quality of simultaneous Diophantine approximations achieved by the LLL Algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper we establish function field versions of two classical conjectures on prime numbers. The first says that the number of primes in intervals (x,x+xϵ] is about xϵ/logx. The second says that the number of primes p<x in the arithmetic progression p≡a(modd), for d<x1−δ, is about π(x)ϕ(d), where ϕ is the Euler totient function. More precisely, for short intervals we prove: Let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(I(f,ϵ))∼#I(f,ϵ)k,q→∞ holds uniformly for all prime powers q, degree k monic polynomials f∈Fq[t] and ϵ0(f,q)≤ϵ, where ϵ0 is either 1k, or 2k if p∣k(k−1), or 3k if further p=2 and degf'≤1. Here I(f,ϵ)={g∈Fq[t]∣deg(f−g)≤ϵdegf}, and πq(I(f,ϵ)) denotes the number of prime polynomials in I(f,ϵ). We show that this estimation fails in the neglected cases. For arithmetic progressions we prove: let k be a fixed integer. Then πq(k;D,f)∼πq(k)ϕ(D),q→∞, holds uniformly for all relatively prime polynomials D,f∈Fq[t] satisfying ‖D‖≤qk(1−δ0), where δ0 is either 3k or 4k if p=2 and (f/D)' is a constant. Here πq(k) is the number of degree k prime polynomials and πq(k;D,f) is the number of such polynomials in the arithmetic progression P≡f(modd). We also generalize these results to arbitrary factorization types.

Abstract: In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.
