Abstract:. Chinese cuisine has gained global recognition due to its rich history and diverse connotations. However, translating the names of Chinese cuisines poses a challenge. Cultural turn theory proposes that translation should transcend the linguistic level and pay attention to cultural interaction and target audience cognition.Compared with traditional studies, Cultural turn theory emphasizes the relationship between translation and cultural dynamics and advocates for the use of multiple methods. This paper re-examines the translation strategy of Chinese cuisine names and advocates for a combination of literal and free translation. The use of images and annotations is suggested to preserve the original information of cuisine names and spread Chinese culinary culture, providing new insights for translation under cross-cultural communication.

Abstract:Building on its author's long-standing advocacy of a culturally oriented conception of translation, this essay maintains that since the globalization in culture has made it necessary to view language as a means of cultural communication, to explore issues in cultural translation is to make an effective attempt at combining the linguistic-empirical study with the cultural/humanistic interpretation of translated texts, with a theoretically informed reconstruction of translation studies as the final goal of this move. The growing importance of translation in our age of globalization calls for a switch from a single linguistics-oriented definition of this practice to a plurality of culturally inspired definitions. Since an increase in information exchange and the rise of mass media have ushered in a global culture, the study of translation as a means of communication should break out of the confines of language and enter a broader cross-cultural context, so as to draw from researches in other fields of the humanities and social sciences. Exploring the significance of translation to Cultural Studies, the author also argues that to appeal to a "translation turn" may well help cultural studies get over the "crisis" it is experiencing currently.

Cultural Approaches to Translation Studies in Western and Chinese Translatologies

Abstract:By analyzing and comparing the sources and features of cultural approaches to translation studies in China and in Western countries, this article discusses research targets, methodologies and problems of cultural research in Chinese translatology. It points out that new theories, including Western translation theories, broadens the horizon of China's translation studies while, at the same time, cultural research in China's translation studies must be based on China's own conditions and aim at solving China's own practical problems. In this respect, it suggests that Chinese researchers pay more attention to descriptive studies as well as proper assessment and analysis of translation activities and products.

Abstract:With the deepening of globalization, mutual cultural communication has become a trend. China's comprehensive national strength is constantly increasing and its influence is also expanding. In the process of cultural communication, Chinese folk culture works are gradually favored by western readers and become one of the channels for the west to understand China. The Right Bank of Argun (2005) is the work of Chi zijian, a Chinese female writer who has won many awards. It was translated by American Sinologist Bruce Humes into English, renamed The Last Quarter of the Moon, and finally published in The United Kingdom in 2013. The spread of The Last Quarter of the Moon around the world is conducive to the spread of Chinese culture and plays a positive role. This thesis takes Susan Bassnett’s cultural translation theory as the theoretical basis, combines the analysis of related translation strategies, and analyzes the relevant corpora through examples, intensive research on the translation of folk culture in The Last Quarter of the Moon.

Abstract:Although translation scholars by and large have claimed a disciplinary status for their own studies, translatology has yet to be granted the same kind of legitimacy as has been enjoyed by the more established disciplines. To clarify the way translatology is, or ought to be, positioned within the academic formation is therefore of significant current interests. The author of this article maintains that as an area of studies located where natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities meet, translatology partakes of both contrastive linguistics, comparative literature and cultural studies but belongs to none. It should have as its own object of research all the phenomena in the practice and thematization of translation and interpreting. Its methodology should be pluralistic: either aesthetic, critical, or empirical/scientific.And given the acceleration of the on-going globalizing process, its function is necessarily expanding.

Abstract:As an important part of Chinese culture, the translation of Minnan culture into foreign languages is of great significance for people all over the world to understand China’s traditional culture. Taking the Chinese-English translation of Minnan culture as an example, this paper discusses the problems existing in the foreign translation of Minnan culture and the countermeasures. Bassnett’s cultural translation theory provides theoretical guidance for this paper, emphasizing that translation is not only the transformation of language, but also the transmission and exchange of cultural information. This paper first introduces Bassnett’s cultural translation theory, then analyzes the characteristics of Minnan culture and the challenges it faces in foreign translation, and then puts forward various translation methods of Minnan culture, including transliteration with annotations, literal translation with annotations, free translation with annotations etc. Finally, it looks forward to the development prospect of Minnan culture foreign translation and puts forward suggestions for future research.

Abstract:Insights into Chinese Culture, a book which systematically and comprehensively introduces the Chinese culture from four aspects, that is, wisdom and beliefs, creativity and exchange, art and aesthetics and folk customs, has played a pivotal role in spreading the brilliant Chinese culture to Western countries since its publication in 2008. The 21st century has witnessed the “going global” of the Chinese culture gradually developing into a national strategy. Under this overall background, this book has been studied from various perspectives such as Western rhetoric theory, audience awareness, the image of China it presents, the strategy of translating culture-loaded words involved and the complex philosophical thoughts explained within and so on, among which, however, a systematic study on the translation of its key terms of Chinese culture is in dire need currently in translation community since it is a book that aims to deliver the great and profound Chinese culture to Western readers. Therefore, following Susan Bassnett’s Cultural Translation Theory, from the perspective of cultural fidelity and the acceptability of English readers, this thesis discusses and analyzes the translations of the representative terms of Chinese culture, such as “仁(ren)”, “礼(li)”, “自然(zi-ran)”, “无为(wu-wei)”, “天(tian)” and “龙(long)”, to examine whether they accurately convey the cultural connotations or to some extent may lead to cultural misunderstandings. This study suggests that the accurate translation of key terms of Chinese culture, which is of great significance in promoting Chinese culture to go global, requires translators’ full and deep grasp of their philosophical connotations and cultural backgrounds instead of the superficial interpretation of their literal meanings.

Abstract:<span>Read in terms of postcolonial translation theories, literary writings by cosmopolitan anglophone writers of Chinese background can be seen as acts of cultural translation, as in the case of Han Suyin's 1952 autobiographical novel, <i>A Many-Splendoured Thing</i>. By employing different strategies to translate textual and non-textual culture-specific elements, Han's work has fostered cross-cultural communication between east and west. On the one hand, by adopting a foreignizing strategy which retains the foreignness of the original text for translating non-political elements including Chinese literary works, philosophy, and folklore, she highlights differences between Chinese and western cultures. On the other hand, her domestication of the Chinese revolution, by comparing its political ideologies to Christianity, facilitates western readers' understanding of the politics of China after 1949. Analysis of this "writer-as-translator" role sheds light on the complexities of postcolonial writing and moves postcolonial translation studies beyond binary oppositions based on political or discursive power relations.</span>

Abstract:In the 1930s, Xiao translated the typical works of Chinese new literature and published them in China in Brief and Furen Magazine, introducing the New Literature Movement to the Anglophone world for the first time. This paper takes a descriptive approach to examine Xiao’s transfer strategies of extralinguistic cultural references in the socio-cultural contexts in which these translated works were reproduced and accepted and to explore the factors influencing the translator’s choice. Within Pedersen’s analytical framework, the textual analysis reveals that the translator always struggled with the inherent tension between foreignization and domestication, which was determined by the unbalanced cultural exchanges between China and the West, Western readers’ understanding of Chinese culture and the skopos of Xiao’s translational action.

Abstract:This article explores how the English language has (partially) accommodated the culture of Chinese calligraphy since the twentieth century. The notion of cultural translation is used and substantiated as the theoretical and explanative framework of this study. Translators have employed two strategies to make the culture of Chinese calligraphy translatable, namely, the reconstruction of this culture and recourse to visual means of representation. The methods of re-organizing Chinese calligraphic culture in the Anglo-American context show that the approaches to Western art are used, and cultural dilution occurs to varying degrees. In addition, the conjunction of pictures and texts helps expose the meanings embedded in Chinese calligraphy, and functions as a means of conveying cultural messages. The practice of cultural translation emancipates the expressive power of the English language and offers a newly woven context that guarantees cross-cultural understanding of foreignness.

Abstract:"China Question of Western Postcolonial Translation Theory" deals with how western postcolonial translation theory is read, interpreted and applied in China, as well as how the reception in China influences revision and development of the theory. Western postcolonial translation theory, though frequently quoted and highly influential in China, is sometimes incapable of effectively explaining Chinese translation practice and convincing Chinese readers. Based on the analysis of the encounter between postcolonial translation theory and China, three suggestions are proposed to revise translation theory so as to build a "greener," healthier hetero-generative ecology of languages and cultures.

Abstract:Feminist translation theory is the academic fruit of the further development of feminist movement and also the portrayal of women's reflection fueled by feminism. Based on Skopos theory, the paper explores how translator's subjectivity acts in translation activities from the feminist perspective, aiming to reveal the relationship between feminist translation and translator's subjectivity. On the basis of a brief introduction, description and evaluation of major feminist translation theories, this study will analyze and evaluate different feminist translation strategies, and conduct critical research of translator's subjectivity, focusing on how feminist translation theory traveled on Chinese soil and the influence of translator's subjectivity combined with Chinese feminist translation.

Abstract:The present essay, based on the author's close reading of J. Hillis Miller's article on the translation of theory, illustrates the principle of the deconstructive translation: the traveling of theory is realized by means of translation, for any theory, once translated, might be misread and mistranslated; but on the other hand, this misreading and mistranslation will lead to a new start, or bring about transformation in another context. If this transformation caused by translation could endow the theory with an"afterlife" in another context, the translation itself should be viewed more successful than frustrating. So to the author, Miller's essay is a complement to Edward Said's concept of traveling theory and a great contribution to deconstructive translation theory.
