Abstract:We provide an upper bound on the topological complexity of twisted products. We use it to give an estimateTC(X)≤TC(π1(X))+dim⁡X of the topological complexity of a space in terms of its dimension and the complexity of its fundamental group.

Abstract:In this paper, we study homological properties of twisted tensor products of connected graded algebras. We focus first on the Ext-algebras of twisted tensor products with a certain form of twisting maps. We show those Ext-algebras are also twisted tensor products, and describe the twisting maps for such Ext-algebras explicitly. With those preparations, we describe Nakayama automorphisms of twisted tensor products of noetherian Artin–Schelter regular algebras.

Abstract:In this paper we define an associative stringy product for the twisted orbifold K-theory of a compact, almost complex orbifold X. This product is defined on the twisted K-theory of the inertia orbifold of X, where the twisting gerbe is assumed to be in the image of the inverse transgression map.

Abstract:We study numerical invariants $d\TC(\Gamma)$ and $d\cat(\Gamma)$ of groups recently introduced in \cite{DJ} and independently in \cite{KW}. We compute $d\TC$ for finite cyclic groups $\mathbb Z_p$ with prime $p$ as well as for nonorientable surfaces of genus $g>3$ (for orientable surfaces it was computed in \cite{DJ}). We prove the formula $$d\TC(G\ast H)=\max\{d\TC (G),d\TC (H), \cd(G\times H)\}$$ for torsion free groups.

Twisted K-theory constructions in the case of a decomposable Dixmier-Douady class II: Topological and equivariant models

Abstract:This is a study of twisted K-theory on a product space $T \times M$. The twisting comes from a decomposable cup product class which applies the 1-cohomology of $T$ and the 2-cohomology of $M$. In the case of a topological product, we give a concrete realization for the gerbe associated to a cup product characteristic class and use this to realize twisted $K^1$-theory elements in terms of supercharge sections in a Fredholm bundle. The nontriviality of this construction is proved. Equivariant twisted K-theory and gerbes are studied in the product case as well. This part applies Lie groupoid theory. Superconnection formalism is used to provide a construction for characteristic polynomials which are used to extract information from the twisted K-theory classes.

Abstract:Consider the Hamiltonian action of a torus on a compact twisted generalized complex manifold M. We first observe that Kirwan injectivity and surjectivity hold for ordinary equivariant cohomology in this setting. Then we prove that these two results hold for the twisted equivariant cohomology as well.

Abstract:We offer here a more direct approach to twisted K-theory, based on the notion of twisted vector bundles (of finite or infinite dimension) and of twisted principal bundles. This is closeely related to the classical notion ot torsors and bundles of modules over an algebra bundle. Twisted K-theory is simply defined as the Grothendieck group of twisted vector bundles (with a given twist). The usual operations on vector bundles (exterior powers, Adams operations) are easily extended to this twisted framework. Graded twisted K-theory, which is important for the definition and proof of the Thom isomorphism in this framework, is defined with the same formalism. We also define a twisted Chern character with target "twisted cohomology". Although there are many definitions of this character in the literature, our method is more elementary and is based on the classical definitions of the Chern-Weil theory, via connections and curvatures. In this way, we get explicit formulas very much in the spirit of Steenrod's coordinate bundles.

Abstract:We consider a twist E over an étale groupoid G. When G is principal, we prove that the nuclear dimension of the reduced twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebra is bounded by a number depending on the dynamic asymptotic dimension of G and the topological covering dimension of its unit space. This generalizes an analogous theorem by Guentner, Willett, and Yu for the C ⁎ -algebra of G. Our proof uses a reduction to the unital case where G has compact unit space, via a construction of “groupoid unitizations” G ˜ and E ˜ of G and E such that E ˜ is a twist over G ˜ . The construction of G ˜ is for r-discrete (hence for étale) groupoids G which are not necessarily principal. When G is étale, the dynamic asymptotic dimension of G and G ˜ coincide. We show that the minimal unitizations of the full and reduced twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebras of the twist over G are isomorphic to the twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebras of the twist over G ˜ . We apply our result about the nuclear dimension of the twisted groupoid C ⁎ -algebra to obtain a similar bound on the nuclear dimension of the C ⁎ -algebra of an étale groupoid with closed orbits and abelian stability subgroups that vary continuously.

Topological complexity, asphericity and connected sums

Abstract:We show that if a closed oriented $n$-manifold $M$ has a non-trivial cohomology class of even degree $k$, whose all pullbacks to products of type $S^1\times N$ vanish, then the topological complexity $\mathrm{TC}(M)$ is at least $6$, if $n$ is odd, and at least $7$ or $9$, if $n$ is even. These bounds extend and improve a result of Mescher and apply for instance to negatively curved manifolds and to connected sums with at least one such summand. In fact, better bounds are obtained due to the non-vanishing of the Gromov norm. As a consequence, in dimension four, we completely determine the topological complexity of these connected sums, namely we show that it is equal to its maximum value nine. Furthermore, we discuss realisation of degree two homology classes by tori, and show how to construct non-realisable classes out of realisable classes in connected sums. The examples of this paper will quite often be aspherical manifolds whose fundamental groups have trivial center and connected sums. We thus discuss the possible relation between the maximum topological complexity $2n+1$ and the triviality of the center for aspherical $n$-manifolds and their connected sums.

Projective Rigidity of Once-Punctured Torus Bundles via the Twisted Alexander Polynomial

Abstract:In this paper we provide a means of certifying infinitesimal projective rigidity relative to the cusp for hyperbolic once punctured torus bundles in terms of twisted Alexander polynomials of representations associated to the holonomy. We also relate this polynomial to an induced action on the tangent space of the character variety of the free group of rank 2 into PGL(4,R) that arises from the holonomy of a hyperbolic once-punctured torus bundle. We prove the induced action on the tangent space of the character variety is the same as the group theoretic action that arises in the Lyndon Hochschild Serre spectral sequence on cohomology.

Abstract:We describe the topological A and B twists of 3d theories of hypermultiplets gauged by vector multiplets as certain deformations of the holomorphic–topological ( HT ) twist of those theories, utilizing the twisted superfields of Aganagic–Costello–Vafa–McNamara describing HT -twisted 3d theories. We rederive many known results from this perspective, including state spaces on Riemann surfaces, deformations induced by flavor symmetries, the boundary VOAs of Costello–Gaiotto, and the category of line operators as proposed by Costello–Dimofte–Gaiotto–Hilburn–Yoo. Along the way, we show how the secondary product of local operators in the holomorphic–topological twist is related to the secondary product in the fully topological twist.

Abstract:The classical notion of twisted product is studied in the context of partial actions, in particular, we show that the globalization of a partial action is a twisted product. In addition, we establish conditions for the metrizability of twisted products, and some homotopy and categorical properties are proved. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the enveloping space to be an equivariant absolute neighborhood extensor are also studied.

Abstract:In this paper we show how to compute cup products in the anchored configuration space of the circle with two anchored points using discrete Morse theory. Knowing how to compute cup products allows us to obtain bounds for the (higher) topological complexity $TC_s$, which are sharp for a sufficiently large value of $s$.

Abstract:Let TC$_n$(X) denote the n-th topological complexity of a topological space X. It is known that TC$_n$(X) does not exceed n-1 for non-contractible X, and so it makes sense to describe spaces X with TC$_n$(X) =n-1. Grant--Lupton--Oprea proved the following: If X is a nilpotent space with TC$_n$(X)=n-1 then X is homotopy equivalent to an odd-dimensional sphere. Here we made an attempt to get rid of nilpotency condition and prove the following: If TC$_n$(X) =n-1 then either X is homotopy equivalent to a sphere of odd dimension or is a homology circle with the infinite cyclic fundamental group.

Abstract:Twisted knot theory, introduced by M.O. Bourgoin, is a generalization of virtual knot theory. It naturally yields the notion of a twisted braid, which is closely related to the notion of a virtual braid due to Kauffman. In this paper, we first prove that any twisted link can be described as the closure of a twisted braid, which is unique up to certain basic moves. This is the analogue of the Alexander Theorem and the Markov Theorem for classical braids and links. Then we also give reduced presentations for the twisted braid group and the flat twisted braid group. These reduced presentations are based on the fact that these twisted braid groups on $n$ strands are generated by a single braiding element and a single bar element plus the generators of the symmetric group on $n$ letters.

Abstract:We consider two families of algebraic varieties Y_n indexed by natural numbers n: the configuration space of unordered n-tuples of distinct points on ℂ, and the space of unordered n-tuples of linearly independent lines in ℂ^n. Let W_n be any sequence of virtual S_n-representations given by a character polynomial, we compute H^i(Y_n; W_n) for all i and all n in terms of double generating functions. One consequence of the computation is a new recurrence phenomenon: the stable twisted Betti numbers lim_n→∞ H^i(Y_n; W_n) are linearly recurrent in i. Our method is to compute twisted point-counts on the F_q-points of certain algebraic varieties, and then pass through the Grothendieck-Lefschetz fixed point formula to prove results in topology. We also generalize a result of Church-Ellenberg-Farb about the configuration spaces of the affine line to those of a general smooth variety.

Abstract:We generalize the well known $C^*$-algebraic result of Kawamura-Tomiyama and Archbold-Spielberg for crossed products of discrete transformation groups to the realm of Banach algebras and twisted actions. Namely we show that topological freeneess is equivalent to the intersection property for all reduced twisted Banach algebra crossed products coming from subgroups, and in the untwisted case to a generalized intersection property for a full $L^p$-operator algebra crossed product for some (and hence any) $p\in [1,\infty]$. This gives efficient simplicity criteria for various Banach algebra crossed products. We also use it to identify the prime ideal space of some crossed products as the quasi-orbit space of the action. For amenable actions we prove that the full and reduced twisted $L^p$-operator algebras coincide.
