Abstract:The loop seal (LS) stabilizes the particle circulation in a dual-circulation fluidized bed (DCFB). This study develops a computational particle fluid dynamics model of a three-chamber LS in a DCFB used for coal feeding and oxygen carrier circulation. After investigating the effect of aeration rate on the mixed-particle transport performance of LS, it was found that increasing the aeration rate alters the particle concentration and hence the pressure drop in the horizontal passage between the supply chamber and mixing chamber (MC), exerting a large impact on particle transport in the LS. Class A choking was formed by deposition of large particles at the bottom of the horizontal passage, hindering the particle transport between chambers to some extent. When the aeration rate exceeded the minimum fluidization velocity ( u mf ) by >14 times, bubble coalescence in the MC hindered the axial diffusion of coal particles and accelerated coal loss through the high horizontal passage, also inhibiting mixed-particle transport in the LS. The optimal aeration rate of mixed-particle transport in the three-chamber LS was determined as 14 u mf . At aeration rates of 14 u mf , the mixed-particle transport performance of the three-chamber LS was effectively strengthened by narrowing the particle-size distribution of coal.
