Abstract:This study explores exceptional points (EPs) in photonic crystals (PhCs) and introduces a novel method for their single-shot observation. Exceptional points are spectral singularities found in non-Hermitian systems, such as leaky PhC slabs. However, directly observing EPs in PhC systems using regular reflectivity spectroscopy is a considerable challenge due to interference between guided resonances and background signals. In this work, we present a simple, nondestructive technique that employs crossed polarizations to directly observe EPs in momentum-resolved resonant scattering. This approach effectively suppresses the background signal, enabling exclusive probing of the guided resonances where EPs manifest. Our results demonstrate the formation of EPs in both energy-momentum mapping and isofrequency imaging. All experimental findings align seamlessly with numerical simulations and analytical models. Our approach holds great potential as a robust tool for studying non-Hermitian physics in PhC platform.

Abstract:The fascinating realm of non-Hermitian physics with the interplay of parity (P) and time-reversal (T) symmetry has been witnessing immense attention in exploring unconventional physics at Exceptional Point (EP) singularities. Particularly, the physics of PT-symmetry, anti-PT (APT)-symmetry, and the emergence of EPs have ignited fervor in photonics. Beyond the conventional relation between EP and PT-symmetric phase transitions, this study delves into hosting higher-order EPs in a specially designed APT-symmetric Fabry-Pérot-type microcavity. We unveil the captivating physics of the parametric encirclement schemes to explore the branch-point behaviors of EPs up to order three in terms of successive state-flipping, while optimizing the designed cavity under APT-symmetric constraints. The insights from our findings are poised to boost research in optical metamaterials, meeting the demands of APT-symmetry and paving the way for a novel class of photonic devices.

Topological Photonic Crystal with Equifrequency Weyl Points

Abstract:Weyl points in three-dimensional photonic crystals behave as monopoles of Berry flux in momentum space. Here, based on general symmetry analysis, we show that a minimal number of four symmetry-related (consequently equifrequency) Weyl points can be realized in time-reversal invariant photonic crystals. We further propose an experimentally-feasible way to modify double-gyroid photonic crystals to realize four equifrequency Weyl points, which is explicitly confirmed by our first-principle photonic band-structure calculations. Remarkably, photonic crystals with equifrequency Weyl points are qualitatively advantageous in applications including angular selectivity, frequency selectivity, invisibility cloaking, and three dimensional imaging.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time- (PT)- symmetric complex potentials can exhibit a phase transition when the degree of non-Hermiticity is increased. Two eigenstates coalesce at a transition point, which is known as the exceptional point (EP) for a discrete spectrum and spectral singularity for a continuous spectrum. The existence of an EP is known to give rise to a great variety of novel behaviors in various fields of physics. In this work, we study the complex band structures of one-dimensional photonic crystals with PT-symmetric complex potentials by setting up a Hamiltonian using the Bloch states of the photonic crystal without loss or gain as a basis. As a function of the degree of non-Hermiticity, two types of PT symmetry transitions are found. One is that a PT-broken phase can reenter into a PT-exact phase at a higher degree of non-Hermiticity. The other is that two EPs, one originating from the Brillouin zone center and the other from the Brillouin zone boundary, can coalesce at some k point in the interior of the Brillouin zone and create a singularity of higher order. Furthermore, we can induce a band inversion by tuning the filling ratio of the photonic crystal, and we find that the geometric phases of the bands before and after the inversion are independent of the amount of non-Hermiticity as long as the PT-exact phase is not broken. The standard concept of topological transition can hence be extended to non-Hermitian systems.
Higher-order exceptional points in loss-free waveguide arrays with negative-index materials

Abstract:Negative-index materials (NIMs) are shown to support optical anti-parity-time (anti-PT) symmetry even when they are lossless. Here we prove the feasibility in achieving higher-order exceptional points (EPs) in loss-free waveguide arrays by utilizing the anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry induced by NIM. Numerical simulation about a third-order EP fits well with the coupled-mode theory. A scheme of achieving fourth-order EPs is also discussed. This work highlights the potential of loss-free NIMs in the study of non-Hermitian optics.

Abstract:Anomalous optical transmission phenomena have ever been discovered in various metamaterials, which can be modulated more easily in Photonic crystals (PhCs). Compared with the regular PhCs composed of round rods closely packed in air, the equal frequency contours (EFC) of honeycomb lattice PhCs constituted by trigonal rods are more rounded and more suitable to realize the all-angle left-handed negative refraction (AALNR) in the low band region. Due to the hex EFC distribution, the regular PhC can be applied in the optical collimator design. In the higher band regions, the more complicated refraction behaviors can be excited based on the intricate undulation of one band or the overlap of different bands in PhCs. These unique features will provide us with more understanding of electromagnetic wave propagation in PhCs and give important guideline for the design of new type optical devices.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the dynamics of dispersive photonic time crystals (PTCs) and their potential applications for controlling light-matter interaction. By employing the Lorentz-Drude model, we analyze theoretically and via numerical simulation the effects of periodic modulation of dispersion parameters, revealing the emergence of hybrid bandgaps from interaction of polaritonic branches with unique characteristics. Our study demonstrates that dispersive PTCs offer novel excitation channels and amplification possibilities, that require lower modulation frequencies compared to non-dispersive systems thus alleviating experimental challenges for the realization of PTCs in the optical regime. These findings pave the way for advancements in polaritonic lasing and resonant Raman scattering.

Abstract:Abstract Exceptional points (EPs) as branch singularities describe peculiar degeneracies of non-Hermitian systems, widely studied in topological and non-topological optical architectures with introducing gain or loss technically. This work focuses on the EPs in a topological waveguide (TW)-cavity coupled structure, where there is no need to introduce practical gain or loss. The topological cavity contains two degenerate counter-propagation topological whispering gallery modes, whose coupling with the TW leads to the effective gain and loss, responsible for the EP. Such a photonic architecture is designed practically by crystal-symmetry-protected topological photonic insulators based on air rods in conventional dielectric materials. The relevant EP reveals the breaking of the parity-time symmetry, reflected by the change of the transmission-dip number in the optical transmission spectra of the system. Achieving EPs in topological photonic systems possibly opens a new avenue toward robust optical devices with exceptional-point-based unique properties and functionalities.

Abstract:Abstract Exceptional points (EPs) can achieve intriguing asymmetric control in non-Hermitian systems due to the degeneracy of eigenstates. Here, we present a general method that extends this specific asymmetric response of EP photonic systems to address any arbitrary fully-polarized light. By rotating the meta-structures at EP, Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase can be exclusively encoded on one of the circular polarization-conversion channels. To address any arbitrary wavefront, we superpose the optical signals originating from two orthogonally polarized -yet degenerate- EP eigenmodes. The construction of such orthogonal EP eigenstates pairs is achieved by applying mirror-symmetry to the nanostructure geometry flipping thereby the EP eigenmode handedness from left to right circular polarization. Non-Hermitian reflective PB metasurfaces designed using such EP superposition enable arbitrary, yet unidirectional, vectorial wavefront shaping devices. Our results open new avenues for topological wave control and illustrate the capabilities of topological photonics to distinctively operate on arbitrary polarization-state with enhanced performances.

Abstract:Interface modes that exist in the band gap of Hermitian systems are well studied. This work looks at the interface modes localized at the loss-gain boundary of 𝓟𝓣-symmetric photonic crystals. These interface bands exhibit zigzag dispersions that exist only in open systems, and the turning points are found to be exceptional points, which are characteristic of non-Hermitian systems. By building a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian model and an effective medium theory, the authors analyze the evolution of the interface bands as the system parameters change.
Dynamically Encircled Higher-order Exceptional Points in an Optical Fiber

Abstract:The unique properties of exceptional point (EP) singularities, arising from non-Hermitian physics, have unlocked new possibilities for manipulating light-matter interactions. A tailored gain-loss variation, while encircling higher-order EPs dynamically, can significantly enhance the control of the topological flow of light in multi-level photonic systems. In particular, the integration of dynamically encircled higher-order EPs within fiber geometries holds remarkable promise for advancing specialty optical fiber applications, though a research gap remains in exploring and realizing such configurations. Here, we report a triple-core specialty optical fiber engineered with customized loss and gain to explore the topological characteristics of a third-order exceptional point (EP3), formed by two interconnected second-order exceptional points (EP2s). We elucidate chiral and nonchiral light transmission through the fiber, grounded in second- and third-order branch point behaviors and associated adiabatic and nonadiabatic modal characteristics, while considering various dynamical parametric loops to encircle the embedded EPs. We investigate the persistence of EP-induced light dynamics specifically in the parametric regions immediately adjacent to, though not encircling, the embedded EPs, potentially leading to improved device performance. Our findings offer significant implications for the design and implementation of novel light management technologies in all-fiber photonics and communications.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) are degeneracies in open wave systems with coalescence of at least two energy levels and their corresponding eigenstates. In higher dimensions, more complex EP physics not found in two-state systems is observed. We consider the emergence and interaction of multiple EPs in a four coupled optical waveguides system by non-Hermitian coupling showing a unique EP formation pattern in a phase diagram. In addition, absolute phase rigidities are computed to show the mixing of the different states in definite parameter regimes. Our results could be potentially important for developing further understanding of EP physics in higher dimensions via generalized paradigm of non-Hermitian coupling for a generation of parity-time devices. EP restoration and fast-light edge states in photonic crystal waveguide with glide and time reversal symmetry

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) in the propagation states give rise to the emergence of intriguing properties with the divergence of the group velocity. However, there have been no experimental reports due to the necessity of maintaining high levels of fabrication precision and the requisite high group velocity contrast. In our study, we propose a design of photonic crystal waveguide with glide and time reversal symmetry, and derive an effective Hamiltonian for edge states to realize fast-light edge states. We adopt a systematic method to generate EPs in edge states by introducing non-Hermitian perturbations to Dirac points guaranteed by glide symmetry, which ensures that EP modes are free from out-of-plane radiation losses. Then, our study reveals the conditions for the exact EP restoration and provides an analytical solution to offset the EP smoothing due to symmetry breaking, which drastically reduces the group velocity contrast. A good symmetry property of the photonic crystal waveguide allows us to derive the effective Hamiltonian as a simple form, and the EPs can be restored by adjusting the real part of the permittivity. Furthermore, we design a feasible photonic crystal slab waveguide incorporating graphene as the absorbing material, and numerically demonstrate a group velocity reaching $v_g = 3.3c$ near the EP, which is up to 25 times that of the original structure. Thanks to the short periodicity of photonic crystals, it's possible to reach the speed of light in vacuum with group velocity contrasts on the order of one digit. Our study paves an innovative way to manipulate the group velocity of light.

Abstract:Non-Hermitian systems around exceptional points (EPs) have demonstrated increased sensitivity as the EP order increases. We propose a protocol for constructing a reconfigurable non-Hermitian system consisting of three coupled optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and demonstrate its enhanced sensitivity around EPs. The coupled OPO system exhibits reconfigurable high-order EPs and corresponding-order enhanced sensitivity (i.e., fourth and sixth order) when it is subjected to pump modulation. Furthermore, the coupled OPO system can synthesize directly a Floquet non-Hermitian system by introducing periodic pump modulation, and can achieve a tunable second-order Floquet EP without periodic modulation of the coupling rates. The convenient flexibility of the coupled OPO system allow it to operate at EPs of different orders and customize a Floquet EP by manipulating the pump parameters. Our protocol can thus contribute to the development of high-performance sensors and precision measurement devices by exploring the unique features of non-Hermitian systems around various EPs.

Abstract:Exploring photonic topology Scattering topological effects are being explored in a variety of electronic and optical materials systems owing to their robustness against defects (see the Perspective by Özdemir). Yang et al. designed and fabricated an ideal optical analog of a three-dimensional Weyl system. Angular transmission measurements revealed four Weyl points at the same energy, as well as the signature helicoidal arcs associated with such an exotic topological system. Zhou et al. theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated the formation of a topologically protected bulk Fermi arc. They attributed the formation of the arc to the topological nature of paired exceptional points (points at which gain and loss in the system are matched). Photonic crystals may provide a powerful platform for studying exotic properties of topological electronic systems and may also be used to develop optical devices that exploit topological properties of light-matter interactions. Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) arising in non-Hermitian systems have led to a variety of intriguing wave phenomena, and have been attracting increased interest in various physical platforms. In this Review, we highlight the latest fundamental advances in the context of EPs in various nanoscale systems, and overview the theoretical progress related to EPs, including higher-order EPs, bulk Fermi arcs and Weyl exceptional rings. We peek into EP-associated emerging technologies, in particular focusing on the influence of noise for sensing near EPs, improving the efficiency in asymmetric transmission based on EPs, optical isolators in nonlinear EP systems and novel concepts to implement EPs in topological photonics. We also discuss the constraints and limitations of the applications relying on EPs, and offer parting thoughts about promising ways to tackle them for advanced nanophotonic applications.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs), at which more than one eigenvalue and eigenvector coalesce, are unique spectral features of non-Hermiticity (NH) systems. They exist widely in open systems with complex energy spectra. We experimentally demonstrate the appearance of paired EPs in a periodical-driven degenerate optical cavity along the synthetic orbital angular momentum dimension with a tunable parameter. The complex-energy band structures and the key features of EPs, i.e., their bulk Fermi arcs, parity-time symmetry breaking transition, energy swapping, and half-integer band windings, are directly observed by detecting the wavefront angle-resolved transmission spectrum. Our results demonstrate the flexibility of using the photonic synthetic dimensions to implement NH systems beyond their geometric dimension and EP-based sensing.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs) of non-Hermitian (NH) systems have recently attracted increasing attention due to their rich phenomenology and intriguing applications. Compared to the predominantly studied second-order EPs, higher-order EPs have been assumed to play a much less prominent role because they generically require the tuning of more parameters. Here we experimentally simulate two-dimensional topological NH band structures using single-photon interferometry, and observe topologically stable third-order EPs obtained by tuning only two real parameters in the presence of symmetry. In particular, we explore how different symmetries stabilize qualitatively different third-order EPs: the parity-time symmetry leads to a generic cube-root dispersion, while a generalized chiral symmetry implies a square-root dispersion coexisting with a flat band. Additionally, we simulate fourfold degeneracies, composed of the non-defective twofold degeneracies and second-order EPs. Our work reveals the abundant and conceptually richer higher-order EPs protected by symmetries and offers a versatile platform for further research on topological NH systems.

Abstract:Exceptional points (EPs), which signify the singularity of eigenvalues and eigenstates in non-Hermitian systems, have garnered considerable attention in two-state systems, revealing a wealth of intriguing phenomena. However, the potential of EPs in multi-state systems, particularly their interaction and coalescence, has been underexplored, especially in the context of electromagnetic fields where far-field coupling can revolutionize spatial wave control. Here, we theoretically and computationally explore the coalescence of multiple EPs within a designer surface plasmonic quadrumer system. The coupled mode model shows that the multiple EPs can emerge and collide as the system parameters vary, leading to higher-order singularities. Numerically calculated results showcase that multiple EPs with different orders have special far-field responses. This pioneering strategy heralds a new era of wavefront engineering in non-Hermitian photonic structures, presenting a transformative class of radiative systems that transcend the conventional frequency spectrum from microwave to optical realms.
