Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to develop a short form of the Test of Object Relations (TOR-SF), a self-report instrument that assesses object relations. Method: Two separate studies were undertaken to accomplish this purpose. Study 1 aimed to select a reduced number of the items included in the Test of Object Relations, in order to develop a short form of the original instrument. Furthermore, the reliability and criterion validity of the instrument were examined. The primary purpose of Study 2 was to test, in a different sample, the factor structure of the TOR-SF and to examine the internal consistency, reliability, and concurrent validity using measures of attachment to mother, father, and friends. Results: The TOR-SF showed a good six-factor structure which represents the six subscales of the theoretical framework model (symbiotic merging, separation anxiety, narcissism, egocentricity, social isolation, and fear of engulfment). The six factors showed very good internal reliability and good criterion and concurrent validity. Results also supported the hierarchical three-factor model which, besides six sub-dimensions of object relations, includes three main dimensions (dependence, self-absorption, and alienation). Conclusions: The short version of the TOR includes 18 items and is economical to use. Practical implications for object relations psychology are discussed.
Validation of the Relationships Questionnaire (RQ) against the Experience of Close Relationship-Revised Questionnaire in a Clinical Psychiatric Sample

Abstract:Background: The Relationship Questionnaire (RQ) is a commonly used self-reporting questionnaire used to measure adult attachment styles. The RQ has two parts. RQ1, a single item where individuals have to indicate their preferred relationship style, and RQ2, where individuals can rate their relationship style in more detail using four different scales. Agreement is expected between the highest levels selected and the style chosen in RQ1. An advantage of the RQ is its brevity, whereas a disadvantage is that it constitutes a single item. A validation of RQ has not been clearly demonstrated, even though it has convergent validity in relation to other measurements in this area. Methods: 168 patients completed the RQ, the short version of the Experience in Close Relationships (Revised) questionnaire (ECR-R), and scales of depression and interpersonal problems. Regression analysis was conducted to examine the congruity in regard to attachment theory. Results: ratings from 15.5% of the patients showed disagreement between RQ1 and RQ2. Each type of attachment measured by the RQ was predicted by the ECR-R scores, as hypothesized. In the predictive analysis of depression and interpersonal problems, both RQ dimensions and ECR-R scores were coherent. Conclusions: RQ is a valid self-reported measurement that can be applied clinically on the condition that the rater identifies an agreement between RQ1 and RQ2.

The Development and Validation of the Sexual and Relationship Distress Scale

Abstract:Background: Sexual distress is an important factor in the etiology, maintenance, and treatment of sexual difficulties, and as such, there is a need for validated measures. A limitation in the research and treatment of distressing sexual difficulties has been the lack of validated measures, and in particular, existing measures are unable to measure the impacts at the relationship level and currently focus on intra-personal distress. Aim: This study sought to develop and psychometrically evaluate a new measure of distress associated with sexual difficulties. Methods: An initial pool of 73 items was created from the results of an earlier qualitative study and administered using an online survey to 1,381 participants (462 men, 904 women, and 14 who identified as "other"), along with measures for the purposes of psychometric evaluation including the Female Sexual Distress Scale-Revised, Couples Satisfaction Index 16-item version, Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-Short Form, and questions relating to sexual function. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis in separate split-half samples were conducted, followed by analysis of validity and reliability of the resulting measure. Outcomes: The Sexual and Relationship Distress Scale (SaRDS) was developed to meet the need for a patient-reported outcome measure of individual and relationship distress within the context of sexual dysfunction and resulted in a psychometrically sound 30-item, 14-factor measure of sexual and relationship distress. Results: The final 30 items explained 77.5% of the total variance and the confirmatory factor analysis showed that this model has an adequate fit (comparative fit index = .97, normed fit index = .95, root mean square error of approximation = .05). The final measure demonstrated good psychometric properties, with strong internal reliability (Cronbach alpha = .95 for the total score with individual sub-scales ranging from .70-.96), and convergent and discriminant validity when compared to current measures (Female Sexual Distress Scale-Revised, r = .82, P < .001; Couples Satisfaction Index, r = -.69, P < .001; Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-Short Form, r = .37, P < .001). Clinical implications: The SaRDS may prove useful for researchers and clinicians interested in understanding and improving the distress experienced within the context of sexual difficulties. The new measure is brief (30 items), easy to administer and score, easily understood (Flesch-Kincaid reading level = grade 3.9), and demonstrates high internal consistency, convergent and discriminant validity. Strengths & limitations: The SaRDS has advantages over existing measures as it is brief yet includes sub-scales. However, it must be noted that a community sample was used for this study and it would be beneficial to include a clinical sample in future validation studies. Conclusion: Unlike most measures in this field, the SaRDS is multi-dimensional and assesses 14 distinct yet related types of sexual and relationship distress experienced in the context of sexual dysfunctions. A two-study validation of a single-item measure of relationship satisfaction: RAS-1

Abstract:Abstract Research addressing relationship satisfaction is a constantly growing area in the social sciences. The aim of the present investigation was to examine the similarities and differences between the seven-item Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS) and the single-item measure of relationship satisfaction (RAS-1), using proximal and distal constructs as correlates. Two studies using two independent samples were conducted, assessing more proximal constructs, such as love and sex mindset in Study 1 ( N = 380; female = 195) and more distant ones, such as loneliness and problematic pornography use in Study 2 ( N = 703; female = 360). Structural equation modeling revealed that love ( β RAS-1 = .55; p < .01; β RAS = .71; p < .01), sex mindset beliefs ( β RAS-1 = .18; p < .01; β RAS = .13; p < .01) and loneliness ( β RAS-1 = −.35; p < .01; β RAS = −.37; p < .01) had significant positive and negative associations with RAS and RAS-1, respectively; while problematic pornography use did not. These results suggest that RAS-1 may be an equally adequate instrument for measuring relationship satisfaction as the RAS with respect to proximal and distal correlates. Thus, RAS-1 is recommended to be used in large-scale studies when the number of items is limited.

Abstract:The 18-item version of the Experiences in Close Relationships-revised (ECR-R-18) is a valid and reliable scale used among Thai adolescents. However, it revealed problematic items that impacted the scale's internal consistency. The study aimed to achieve two objectives: (1) develop a new, shorter scale by retaining only highly loaded items equally between attachment anxiety and attachment avoidance, and (2) evaluate the psychometric properties of the shorter ECR-R version compared to the existing 18-item scale. Objective 1 was achieved through Study 1, involving 204 youths aged 16–18 years (64% female). All participants completed the 18-item ECR-R, and exploratory factor analysis was conducted to identify suitable items for the new ECR-R-AD. Objective 2 was fulfilled in Study 2, which included a total of 443 students in grades aged 15–18 years old (88% female) from Thai boarding schools in Northern Thailand. All participants completed both the 18-item ECR-R, and confirmatory factor analysis of both the existing 18-item and the new shorter scale was performed and compared. Additional measures including the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Perceived Stress Scale-10, and Relationship Questionnaire were completed alongside the ECR-R to assess convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity. The invariance test for the new ECR-R across genders was conducted using multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. For objective 1, Study 1 developed a new scale called "ECR-R-10-AD" with 10 items, comprising 5 for attachment anxiety and 5 for attachment avoidance. The McDonald's omega values were 0.866 for avoidance and 0.823 for anxiety subscales. The corrected correlation between the ECR-R-18 and ECR-R-10-AD was significant. For objective 2, Study 2 found that the first-order two-factor solution model fit the data best for the ECR-R-10-AD. Convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity with other measurements and invariance tests based on sex were established for the ECR-R-AD. The ECR-R-10-AD provided sufficient psychometric properties among Thai adolescents. Factorial validity, convergent validity, and measurement invariance were established. As the ECR-R-10-AD is brief, it can be administered with less burden. Limitations and future research were discussed.

Abstract:We conducted three studies (total n = 998) aimed at developing and validating a shortened version of the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory of Personality Questionnaire (i.e., the RST-PQ-S). In Study 1 (n = 341), twenty-two items were selected from the original RST-PQ, based on both theoretical and empirical criteria. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on this short-form supported the six-factor structure comprising: FFFS, BIS, and four BAS components (Reward Interest, Goal Drive-Persistence, Reward Reactivity, and Impulsivity). The six scale scores showed adequate levels of internal consistency. Construct validity was supported by correlations with established personality measures. In Study 2 (n = 340), CFA results were cross-validated in an independent sample and construct validity was supported by correlations with BIS/BAS scales. In Study 3 (n = 317) test-retest correlations showed acceptable-to-good levels of temporal stability over a four-week interval. Results revealed a substantial overlap with original, full-length RST-PQ, providing evidence for the comparability of the two versions. Latent State-Trait analyses showed that the items of the RST-PQ-S mostly capture interindividual differences that are stable across situations. Taken together, findings indicate that the RST-PQ-S provides an efficient, valid and reliable alterative to the longer RST-PQ.

Abstract:In this age of accountability, social work practitioners face greater demands to demonstrate the effectiveness of their interventions. A practical way to accomplish this is to use rapid assessment instruments (RAIs) to measure a client’s level of functioning so that any subsequent change in functioning can be accurately detected over time. Although great strides have been made during the past three decades in the development of RAIs, there remains a paucity of reliable and valid scales when compared to the increasingly complex range of problems that practitioners confront in their day-to-day work with clients. This article, the first in a two-part series, outlines how to conceptualize and create a scale and how to plan and subsequently implement a design testing the newly created scale’s reliability and validity. The second article in this series provides illustrations of these steps from the authors’ own works, detailing decision making and strategies for analyzing psychometric data.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the reliability and validity of the inventory of experience of close relationship-revised version (ECR-R).Methods:286 college students were collected for testing the internal consistency and structure validity of the inventory. Test-retest reliability was founded in 31 students. Criteria validity was also studied in 32 cases with anxiety neurosis. Results: The Cronbach α of the ECR-R and its two subscales (anxiety and avoidance) were 0.87, 0.86 and 0.81 respectively. The test-retest reliabilities of them were 0.75, 0.82 and 0.61 respectively. The two subscales had good discriminating ability and were confirmed by factor analysis, anxiety and avoidance could explain 21.28 and 11.20 of the total variance. Conclusion: The ECR-R is psychometrically acceptable and may be applied to study attachment of Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:The literature review shows a lack of standardized and validated scales assessing expectations toward romantic relationships in emerging adults. Hence, the main goal of this study was to design a tool that assesses romantic relationship expectations in Spanish-speaking emerging adults involved and non-involved in a romantic relationship, and to examine the psychometric properties and validity of this new measure. Participants included 1077 undergraduate and vocational training school students aged between 18 and 30 years, who completed the Expectations Toward Romantic Relationships scale (ETRR) and other measures (e.g., Experiences in Close Relationships, Children's Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale), in order to analyze the convergent validity of the ETRR. With the aim of conducting the validation study and obtaining the psychometric properties of the scale, the sample was randomly split into two groups. Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses showed a good fit for three factors that measured romantic relationship expectations (Stability; Caregiving; Conflict) with 19 items. Results also provided evidence of the ETRR's convergent validity through its ́ significant associations with attachment-related anxiety and avoidance and some family-of-origin experiences. This study provides evidence on the reliability and validity of the ETRR in a Spanish-speaking sample of emerging adults, confirming the good psychometric properties of this new tool.

Abstract:Background: Psychotherapists need effective tools to monitor changes in the patient's affective perception of the therapist and the therapeutic relationship during sessions to tailor therapeutic interventions and improve treatment outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the in-Session Patient Affective Reactions Questionnaire (SPARQ), a concise self-report measure designed for practical application in real-world psychotherapy settings. Methods: Validation data was gathered from ( N = 700) adult patients in individual psychotherapy. These patients completed the SPARQ in conjunction with additional measures capturing sociodemographic details, characteristics of therapeutic interventions, individual personality traits, mental health symptom severity, elements of the therapeutic relationship, and session outcomes. This comprehensive approach was employed to assess the construct and criterion-related validity of the SPARQ. Results: The SPARQ has a two-factor structure: Positive Affect ( k = 4, ω total = .87) and Negative Affect ( k = 4, ω total = .75). Bifactor confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) yielded the following fit indices: X 2 [ df ] = 2.53, CFI = .99; TLI = .98; RMSEA = .05; and SRMR = .02. Multi-group CFAs demonstrated measurement invariance (i) across patients who attended psychotherapy sessions in person versus in remote mode, and (ii) across patients with and without psychiatric diagnoses confirmed metric invariance. Furthermore, the SPARQ showed meaningful correlations with concurrently administered measures. Discussion: The SPARQ proves to be a valuable instrument in clinical, training, and research contexts, adept at capturing patients' session-level affective responses towards their therapist and perceptions of the therapeutic alliance. Comprehensive descriptive statistics and a range of score precision indices have been reported, intended to serve as benchmarks for future research.

Abstract:The study analyses factor structure and psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Fertility Problem Inventory-Short Form. A sample of 206 infertile couples completed the Italian version of Fertility Problem Inventory (46 items) with demographics, State Anxiety Scale of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (Form Y), Edinburgh Depression Scale and Dyadic Adjustment Scale, used to assess convergent and discriminant validity. Confirmatory factor analysis was unsatisfactory (comparative fit index = 0.87; Tucker-Lewis Index = 0.83; root mean square error of approximation = 0.17), and Cronbach's α (0.95) revealed a redundancy of items. Exploratory factor analysis was carried out deleting cross-loading items, and Mokken scale analysis was applied to verify the items homogeneity within the reduced subscales of the questionnaire. The Fertility Problem Inventory-Short Form consists of 27 items, tapping four meaningful and reliable factors. Convergent and discriminant validity were confirmed. Findings indicated that the Fertility Problem Inventory-Short Form is a valid and reliable measure to assess infertility-related stress dimensions.
Metric Goodness and Measurement Invariance of the Italian Brief Version of Interpersonal Reactivity Index: A Study With Young Adults

Abstract:The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) is a widely used multidimensional measure to assess empathy across four main dimensions: perspective taking (PT) empathic concern (EC) personal distress (PD) fantasy (F). This study aimed to replicate the Italian validation process of the shortened IRI (Interpersonal Reactivity Index) scale in order to confirm its psychometric properties with a sample of young adults. The Gender Measurement Invariance of empathy in this age group was also an objective of the work in order to increase the data on this aspect. A total of 683 Italian university students participated in a non-probabilistic sampling. The 16-item version was confirmed in its four-factor structure but with changes to some items. The model showed good fits with both the CFA and the gender Measurement Invariance. The internal consistency measures were found to be fully satisfactory. Convergent validity was tested by the correlations with the Prosocialness Scale for Adults and The Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 . As hypothesized the measure proved good convergent validity with Prosocialness, i.e., the willingness to assist, help, share, care and empathy with others, and a relevant inverse association with the External Oriented Thinking, characterizing individuals with emotionally poor thinking. This research provided additional evidence for a link between alexithymia and poor empathic abilities in young adults.

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to establish the factorial validity and reliability of the Risk-Taking and Self-Harm Inventory for Adolescents (RTSHIA), proposed by Vrouva and colleagues in 2010, in an Italian sample. The RTSHIA measures both Risk-Taking and Self-Harm behavior in adolescents. We administered the scale to a total of 1292 Italian adolescents from 9th to 12th grade; to verify the validity of the scale, we also assessed emotion regulation and psychopathological traits. The exploratory factor analysis (EFA) (N = 638) and the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) (N = 660) confirmed the original two-factor structure of the RTSHIA (Risk-Taking and Self-Harm). The only differences in the Italian version of the RTSHIA (RTSHIA-I) were that one item was moved from the original Risk-Taking factor to the Italian Self-Harm factor, and another item that was not included in the original RTSHIA is now part of the Risk-Taking factor in the Italian version. The reliability of the RTSHIA-I is also confirmed, and both factors correlate with emotion regulation and externalizing/internalizing traits. Our results suggest that the RTSHIA-I is a useful tool for assessing Risk-Taking and Self-Harm behaviors in Italian adolescents, and the correlational patterns indicate that these behaviors may be related to difficulties in mentalization skills.

The application of item response theory in developing and validating a shortened version of the Rotterdam Emotional Intelligence Scale

Abstract:The Rotterdam Emotional Intelligence Scale (REIS) has a good balance between the emotions of self and others, which solves the problem of previous scales being unable to clearly distinguish the emotional intelligence of self from that of others. In the current study, a short version of the REIS scale was developed by the item response theory (IRT) method according to item fit, item or test information function (IIF) and differential item function (DIF) indicators. The results show that the short scale with 14 items had acceptable structural validity (RMSEA = 0.05, CFI = 0.96, TLI = 0.94, SRMR = 0.04) and high reliability ( = 0.90). The high correlations (more than 0.7) between the scores of the short scale and EIS and WLEIS also verified the concurrent validity of the short scale. In conclusion, compared with the original version of REIS, the developed short version saves 50% of the items and has competitive validity and reliability. The short form will be useful for research and applied contexts where an efficient, concise version is needed.

First Validation of the Referential Process Post-Session Scale - Therapist Version (RPPS-T)

Abstract:Objective: Bucci's multiple code theory maintains that for a significant change the patient-therapist relationship should foster a referential process shaping in three alternating phases: arousal of emotion schemas, symbolizing/narrating emotional experiences, and reflecting/reorganizing the emotional meanings. Until now to monitor these phases clinicians and researchers have used several referential process computerized linguistic measures, which however need the sessions verbatim transcription. In order to have a less time-consuming method we developed and tested a therapist self-report questionnaire measuring the referential process phases. Method: We asked eight psychotherapists in a first study and nine psychotherapists in a second study to complete the Referential Process Post-session Scale - Therapist version (RPPS-T) just after the end of their sessions. In a third study we transcribed 29 sessions conducted by three psychotherapists to calculate the correlations between the RPPS-T scores and the computerized linguistic measures of the referential process calculated on the session transcripts. Results: In the first study we collected 105 evaluations regarding 29 patients and an exploratory factor analysis revealed a four-factor pattern consistent with the hypothesized constructs. The analysis reduced the initial pool of 42 items to 12. In the second study 130 sessions with 25 different patients have been evaluated on the shortened version of the RPPS-T and a confirmatory factor analysis found that the four-factor model satisfactorily fitted the new data as well. In the third study we found that the factors of RPPS-T regarding the symbolizing phase correlated with the corresponding computerized linguistic measures calculated on the session transcripts. Conclusions: The RPPS-T received a first validation as a concurrent measure of the referential process, especially for the symbolizing phase, and could be considered a useful instrument for research and supervision.
A Short Measure of Acceptability of Intimate Partner Violence Against Women: Development and Validation of the A-IPVAW-8 Scale

Abstract:Attitudes of acceptability of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) are considered one of the main risk factors of this type of violence. The aim of this study is to develop and validate a short version of the acceptability of IPVAW scale, the A-IPVAW-8, for large scale studies where space and time are limited. A panel of experts were asked to assess item content validity. Two samples were recruited to assemble an 8-item short version of the scale using automated test assembly, and to reassess the psychometric properties of the A-IPVAW-8 in an independent sample. Results showed that the A-IPVAW-8 had adequate internal consistency (α = .72-.76, ω = .73-.81), a stable one-factor latent structure (comparative fit index [CFI] = 0.94, Tucker–Lewis index = 0.92, root mean square error of approximation = 0.077), validity evidences based on its relationships to other variables in both samples, and was also invariant across gender (ΔCFI < |0.02|). This study provides a short, easy-to-use tool to evaluate attitudes of acceptability of IPVAW for large scale studies.

Abstract:Contextual therapy posits that a truly comprehensive grasp of human existence is composed of individual and relational realities. The Relational Ethics Scale (RES) is the only validated instrument to measure relational ethics, one of the relational realities' four dimensions, which was theorized by Boszormenyi-Nagy. The RES measures people's perception about constructs of loyalty, entitlement, trust and justice in their family of origin and in their current and significant relationships. Relational ethics has been shown to have implications for mature development, psychological health and family functioning. The aim of this research was to adapt the RES for use with Spaniards residing in Spain (N = 1181). Psychometric properties were analyzed, and construct validity was assessed using the Spanish-Differentiation Self Inventory. Results obtained indicate the Spanish Relational Ethics Scale (S-RES) is a valid and reliable tool for relational ethics assessment in Spanish populations. Couple and family counselors in Spain may consider the clinical assessment of relational ethics using the S-RES in order to explore issues of fairness, trust, roles, and re-balance when working to support complex family systems. Future research directions using the newly validated S-RES are discussed.
Development and validation of the relational behavior interactions scale for couples

Abstract:In this research, we developed and validated a measure of couple-based reported behavior interactions (RBI). Specifically, Study 1 was designed to describe the development of the scale and to examine its reliability; Study 2 (N = 222), was designed to examine factors that could differentiate men and women. Additionally, we tested if women's behaviors could predict their partner's behavior. Results from the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed a three-factor structure for couples' RBI which were labelled: Social Companionship and Affective Behavior Interactions (SAI) (Factor 1), Fulfilling Obligations and Duties of the Partner (FOD) (Factor 2) and Openness in the Relationship (OR) (Factor 3). In linear regression analyses, there was a significant difference between men and women in the second factor, which represents behaviors associated with fulfilling the responsibilities of a partner. On the other hand, neither the SAI factor nor the OR factor showed any distinct gender differences. The SPSS PROCESS analysis revealed that women's Social Companionship and Affective Behavior Interactions (Factor 1), and Openness in the Relationship (Factor 3) significantly predicted their male partner's behaviors. The relationship duration significantly moderated the association between women's and men's behaviors for both factors. Results are discussed in light of the need for a broader understanding of romantic behavioral interactions.

Abstract:Background: The relevance of family relationships in the outcome of various disorders has been highlighted from different domains. Specifically, empirical studies on the relationship between the outcome of schizophrenia and various affective dimensions of family relationships have allowed the identification of particularly relevant aspects: criticism, hostility, and over-protection. Aims: The present study aims to adapt and validate an abbreviated Spanish version of the Influential Relationship Questionnaire (IRQ), an instrument that measures the patient's own perception of the affective dimensions of family relationships. Method: Participants were 188 patients (63.8% male) of the Public Health Service in Andalusia (Spain) with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or a related disorder. One hundred and thirty-six participants provided data related to both father and mother, and 52 only related to mother or father, so the analyses were carried out with a total of 324 questionnaires. Simultaneously, in 130 participants, the Perceived Criticism Scale was applied, and in 50 cases, relatives were asked to complete the Family Attitudes Scale. Results: Principal component analysis allowed for the identification of four factors that explained 61.53% of the total variance (criticism, over-protection, restriction, and care). The values of Cronbach's alpha coefficient, as well as the omega coefficient, showed high consistency. The temporal reliability for an interval of 3 months was high. The correlations between the IRQ dimensions and the other variables included in the study were significant and in the expected direction. Conclusions: The results support the reliability and validity of the abbreviated version of the IRQ.

Abstract:Psychological Reports, Ahead of Print. The purpose of the present study was to develop and conduct a preliminary psychometric evaluation of the Self Disclosure to Romantic Partner Scale that assesses adults' attitudes towards sharing their personal information that includes disturbing feelings, thoughts, and experiences with their romantic partners. Two studies were conducted for this purpose. The first study was carried out with 200 participants and the second study was conducted with 206 participants. Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis showed a one-dimensional factor structure for the seven items of the Self Disclosure to Romantic Partner Scale. Furthermore, the results indicated that Cronbach alpha and McDonald's omega coefficient of Self Disclosure to Romantic Partner Scale were over .70 for both studies. Taken together, these findings suggest that Self Disclosure to Romantic Partner Scale has good psychometric properties.
