Abstract:Thermal energy storage is a crucial challenge for developing renewable energy systems such as electricity by concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. Thermochemical processes are increasingly being investigated for high-temperature storage systems and can integrate CSP technologies. The reactive hydroxide pair Ca(OH) 2 /H 2 O is an interesting candidate for thermochemical storage, as it is a cheap and safe material that can easily operate in the 300 °C–500 °C range. The challenge is to implement this reactive pair in the simplest, cheapest, and most reliable way in large-scale CSP plants. Here we used numerical simulation and lab-scale experiments focused on fixed-bed configurations of the reactor to investigate how the thermochemical storage beds behave and perform. The reactive solid is implemented in a composite compacted bed with a graphite binder to enhance heat transfer. We studied the influence of several parameters related to the configuration of the reactive bed (transfer length, proportion of conductive binder in the composite, energy density of the composite) and the operating conditions (pressure of the reactive vapor, temperature deviation from the thermodynamic equilibrium of the reaction, which defines the driving force of the reaction kinetics). Experiments led to an energy density of 130 to 230 kWh/m 3 . The discharge reactions last from 3 to 12 h depending on the values of other parameters, and are therefore consistent with various storage/discharge scenarios for a CSP plant. Simulations served to conduct performance analysis in a wider range of parameter values, and analyze the main limitations according to the parameter values set. These investigations clearly highlight the antagonistic influence of some parameters and the need for deep analysis to determine the optimal configuration over the whole cycle of synthesis and decomposition in a storage reactor to meet a user's requirements in terms of storage/discharge durations and energy density.
