Abstract:Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia is a common occurrence in newborns, and timely and effective management of severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (SNH) by phototherapy (PT), and more recently double PT, the current golden standard treatment for reducing total serum bilirubin (TSB), is crucial for avoiding childhood disability (kernicterus spectrum disorder - KSD), or even death (reviewed in 1 ). Despite being an apparently easy condition to manage, kernicterus still occurs worldwide, and a dichotomy in its management exists. While unavailability and/or inefficacy of diagnosis and proper therapy is the major cause of kernicterus and death in low-incoming countries (LIC), the medical advances, leading to increasingly premature newborns to survive, is a new challenge in the industrialized Nations (IN) (reviewed in 1 ).
