Abstract:Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a fundamental role in plant growth and development, as well as in the responses to abiotic stresses. Previous studies have revealed that many components in ABA and drought stress signaling pathways are ubiquitinated by E3 ligases. In this study, AtPPRT1, a putative C3HC4 zinc-finger ubiquitin E3 ligase, was explored for its role in abiotic stress response in Arabidopsis thaliana. The expression of AtPPRT1 was induced by ABA. In addition, the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene driven by the AtPPRT1 promoter was more active in the root hair zone and root tips of primary and major lateral roots of young seedlings in the presence of ABA. The assays for seed germination, stomatal aperture, root length, and water deficit demonstrated that the AtPPRT1-overexpressing Arabidopsis was insensitive to ABA and sensitive to drought stress compared with wild-type (WT) plants. The analysis by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) revealed that the expression of three stress-inducible genes (AtRAB18, AtERD10, and AtKIN1) were upregulated in the atpprt1 mutant and downregulated in AtPPRT1-overexpressing plants, while two ABA hydrolysis genes (AtCYP707A1 and AtCYP707A3) were downregulated in the atpprt1 mutant and upregulated in AtPPRT1-overexpressing plants in the presence of ABA. AtPPRT1 was localized in the mitochondria. Our findings indicate that AtPPRT1 plays a negative role in ABA and drought stress responses.

Abstract:The basic Leucine zipper transcription factor ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE5 (ABI5) is a key regulator of abscisic acid (ABA)-mediated seed germination and postgermination seedling growth. While a family of SUCROSE NONFERMENTING1-related protein kinase2s (SnRK2s) is responsible for ABA-induced phosphorylation and stabilization of ABI5, the phosphatase(s) responsible for dephosphorylating ABI5 is still unknown. Here, we demonstrate that mutations in FyPP1 (for Phytochrome-associated serine/threonine protein phosphatase1) and FyPP3, two homologous genes encoding the catalytic subunits of Ser/Thr PROTEIN PHOSPHATASE6 (PP6), cause an ABA hypersensitive phenotype in Arabidopsis thaliana, including ABA-mediated inhibition of seed germination and seedling growth. Conversely, overexpression of FyPP causes reduced sensitivity to ABA. The ABA hypersensitive phenotype of FyPP loss-of-function mutants is ABI5 dependent, and the amount of phosphorylated and total ABI5 proteins inversely correlates with the levels of FyPP proteins. Moreover, FyPP proteins physically interact with ABI5 in vitro and in vivo, and the strength of the interaction depends on the ABI5 phosphorylation status. In vitro phosphorylation assays show that FyPP proteins directly dephosphorylate ABI5. Furthermore, genetic and biochemical assays show that FyPP proteins act antagonistically with SnRK2 kinases to regulate ABI5 phosphorylation and ABA responses. Thus, Arabidopsis PP6 phosphatase regulates ABA signaling through dephosphorylation and destabilization of ABI5.

Abstract:Key messageThe RING-type E3 ligase AtARRE participates in the plant ABA responding as a negative regulator.AbstractUbiquitination protease system (UPS) is significant in post-transcriptional regulation. In UPS, E3 ligase recognizes the substrate protein and mediates the polyubiquitin chain onto the substrate. Here, we identified a new gene, named Arabidopsis thaliana ABA-related RING-type E3 ligase (AtARRE), which induced by ABA and NaCl. AtARRE encodes a functional RING-type E3 ligase protein localized in nucleus and plasma membrane of Arabidopsis. Physiological analysis demonstrated that mutation of AtARRE (T-DNA insert mutants atarre-1 and atarre-2) caused plants hypersensitivity to ABA, including enhanced stomatal closure, reduced root elongation and seed germination. However, overexpression of AtARRE transgenic lines caused plants hyposensitive to ABA compared with WT and mutant atarre plants. Under the treatment of ABA, the transcript abundances of ABA-responsive genes RD29A, RD29B, RD22 and ABI5 in atarre mutant plants were markedly higher than those of WT and AtARRE overexpression lines. Hence, these results indicate that AtARRE acts as a negative regulator of ABA-mediated stress responses in Arabidopsis.

Abstract:Abscisic acid (ABA) is a phytohormone that plays critical roles in numerous developmental stages as well as in adaptive responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Recent breakthroughs in the field of ABA signaling have indicated that there are three major components, PYR/PYL/RCAR (an ABA receptor), type 2C protein phosphates (PP2C, a negative regulator), and SNF1-related protein kinase 2 (SnRK2, a positive regulator). Further results show that these three proteins construct a double negative regulatory system, PYR/PYL/RCAR-| PP2C-| SnRK2, to regulate ABA signal responses in plant cells. Moreover, the combination patterns of these components in vivo are restricted by spatio-temporal and biochemical determinants and the combinational variation in the ABA signalosome is specific to different ABA signal responses. This review summarizes recent advances of study on the molecular basis and regulatory mechanism of PYR/PYL/RCAR-mediated ABA signaling pathway and PYR/PYL/RCAR-PP2C-SnRK2 complex-mediated ABA signal regulation network in plants. The perspectives related to this study are proposed.
The APC/CTE E3 Ubiquitin Ligase Complex Mediates the Antagonistic Regulation of Root Growth and Tillering by ABA and GA

Abstract:The antagonistic regulation of seed germination by the phytohormones abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellic acid (GA) has been well-established. However, how these phytohormones antagonistically regulate root growth and branching (tillering in rice, Oryza sativa) remains obscure. Rice TILLER ENHANCER (TE) encodes an activator of the APC/CTE E3 ubiquitin ligase complex that represses tillering but promotes seed germination. In this study, we identified a dual role of GA and APC/CTE in regulating root growth. High GA levels can activate APC/CTE to promote the degradation of rice SHORT-ROOT1 (OsSHR1, a key factor promoting root growth) in the root meristem (RM) or MONOCULM1 (MOC1, a key factor promoting tillering) in the axillary meristem (AM), leading to restricted root growth and tillering, while low GA levels can activate the role of APC/CTE in stimulating RM cell division to promote root growth. In addition, moderate enhancement of ABA signaling helps maintain the RM and AM size, sustaining root growth and tillering by antagonizing the GA-promoted degradation of OsSHR1 and MOC1 through the SnRK2-APC/CTE regulatory module. We conclude that APC/CTE plays a key role in regulating plant architecture by mediating the crosstalk between ABA and GA signaling pathways.
Ubiquitin Ligases RGLG1 and RGLG5 Regulate Abscisic Acid Signaling by Controlling the Turnover of Phosphatase PP2CA.

Abstract:Abscisic acid (ABA) is an essential hormone for plant development and stress responses. ABA signaling is suppressed by clade A PP2C phosphatases, which function as key repressors of this pathway through inhibiting ABA-activated SnRK2s (SNF1-related protein kinases). Upon ABA perception, the PYR/PYL/RCAR ABA receptors bind to PP2Cs with high affinity and biochemically inhibit their activity. While this mechanism has been extensively studied, how PP2Cs are regulated at the protein level is only starting to be explored. Arabidopsis thaliana RING DOMAIN LIGASE5 (RGLG5) belongs to a five-member E3 ubiquitin ligase family whose target proteins remain unknown. We report that RGLG5, together with RGLG1, releases the PP2C blockade of ABA signaling by mediating PP2CA protein degradation. ABA promotes the interaction of PP2CA with both E3 ligases, which mediate ubiquitination of PP2CA and are required for ABA-dependent PP2CA turnover. Downregulation of RGLG1 and RGLG5 stabilizes endogenous PP2CA and diminishes ABA-mediated responses. Moreover, the reduced response to ABA in germination assays is suppressed in the rglg1 amiR (artificial microRNA)-rglg5 pp2ca-1 triple mutant, supporting a functional link among these loci. Overall, our data indicate that RGLG1 and RGLG5 are important modulators of ABA signaling, and they unveil a mechanism for activation of the ABA pathway by controlling PP2C half-life.
SCFAtPP2-B11 modulates ABA signaling by facilitating SnRK2.3 degradation in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract:The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is an essential part of the plant response to abiotic stressors such as drought. Upon the perception of ABA, pyrabactin resistance (PYR)/PYR1-like (PYL)/regulatory components of ABA receptor (RCAR) proteins interact with co-receptor protein phosphatase type 2Cs to permit activation Snf1-related protein kinase2 (SnRK2) kinases, which switch on ABA signaling by phosphorylating various target proteins. Thus, SnRK2 kinases are central regulators of ABA signaling. However, the mechanisms that regulate SnRK2 degradation remain elusive. Here, we show that SnRK2.3 is degradated by 26S proteasome system and ABA promotes its degradation. We found that SnRK2.3 interacts with AtPP2-B11 directly. AtPP2-B11 is an F-box protein that is part of a SKP1/Cullin/F-box E3 ubiquitin ligase complex that negatively regulates plant responses to ABA by specifically promoting the degradation of SnRK2.3. AtPP2-B11 was induced by ABA, and the knockdown of AtPP2-B11 expression markedly increased the ABA sensitivity of plants during seed germination and postgerminative development. Overexpression of AtPP2-B11 does not affect ABA sensitivity, but inhibits the ABA hypersensitive phenotypes of SnRK2.3 overexpression lines. These results reveal a novel mechanism through which AtPP2-B11 specifically degrades SnRK2.3 to attenuate ABA signaling and the abiotic stress response in Arabidopsis.

Abstract:Abscisic acid (ABA) plays crucial roles in plant growth and development, as well as in response to various environmental stresses. To date, many regulatory genes involved in the ABA response network have been identified; however, their roles have remained to be fully elucidated. In this study, we identified AtYY1, an Arabidopsis homolog of the mammalian C2H2 zinc-finger transcription factor Yin Yang 1 (YY1), as a novel negative regulator of the ABA response. AtYY1 is a dual-function transcription factor with both repression and activation domains. The expression of AtYY1 was induced by ABA and stress conditions including high salt and dehydration. The yy1 mutant was more sensitive to ABA and NaCl than the wild-type, while overexpressing AtYY1 plants were less sensitive. AtYY1 loss also enhanced ABA-induced stomatal closing and drought resistance. Moreover, AtYY1 can bind the ABA REPRESSOR1 (ABR1) promoter and directly upregulate ABR1 expression, as well as negatively regulate ABA-and salt-responsive gene expression. Additional analysis indicated that ABA INSENSITIVE4 (ABI4) might positively regulate AtYY1 expression and that ABR1 can antagonize this regulation. Our findings provide direct evidence that AtYY1 is a novel negative regulator of the ABA response network and that the ABI4-AtYY1-ABR1 regulatory pathway may fine-tune ABA-responsive gene expression in Arabidopsis.
The E3 Ligase AtRDUF1 Positively Regulates Salt Stress Responses in Arabidopsis Thaliana.

Abstract:Ubiquitination is an important post-translational protein modification that is known to play critical roles in diverse biological processes in eukaryotes. The RING E3 ligases function in ubiquitination pathways, and are involved in a large diversity of physiological processes in higher plants. The RING domain-containing E3 ligase AtRDUF1 was previously identified as a positive regulator of ABA-mediated dehydration stress response in Arabidopsis. In this study, we report that AtRDUF1 is involved in plant responses to salt stress. AtRDUF1 expression is upregulated by salt treatment. Overexpression of AtRDUF1 in Arabidopsis results in an insensitivity to salt and osmotic stresses during germination and seedling growth. A double knock-out mutant of AtRDUF1 and its close homolog AtRDUF2 (atrduf1atrduf2) was hypersensitive to salt treatment. The expression levels of the stress-response genes RD29B, RD22, and KIN1 are more sensitive to salt treatment in AtRDUF1 overexpression plants. In summary, our data show that AtRDUF1 positively regulates responses to salt stress in Arabidopsis.
Interactions between soybean ABA receptors and type 2C protein phosphatases

Abstract:The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays important roles in regulating plant growth, development, and responses to environmental stresses. Proteins in the PYR/PYL/RCAR family (hereafter referred to as PYLs) are known as ABA receptors. Since most studies thus far have focused on Arabidopsis PYLs, little is known about PYL homologs in crop plants. We report here the characterization of 21 PYL homologs (GmPYLs) in soybean. Twenty-three putative GmPYLs can be found from soybean genome sequence and categorized into three subgroups. GmPYLs interact with AtABI1 and two GmPP2Cs in diverse manners. A lot of the subgroup I GmPYLs interact with PP2Cs in an ABA-dependent manner, whereas most of the subgroup II and III GmPYLs bind to PP2Cs in an ABA-independent manner. The subgroup III GmPYL23, which cannot interact with any of the tested PP2Cs, differs from other GmPYLs. The CL2/gate domain is crucial for GmPYLs-PP2Cs interaction, and a mutation in the conserved proline (P109S) abolishes the interaction between GmPYL1 and AtABI1. Furthermore, the ABA dependence of GmPYLs-PP2Cs interactions are partially correlated with two amino acid residues preceding the CL2/gate domain of GmPYLs. We also show that GmPYL1 interacts with AtABI1 in an ABA-dependent manner in plant cells. Three GmPYLs differentially inhibit AtABI1 and GmPP2C1 in an ABA-dependent or -enhanced manner in vitro. In addition, ectopically expressing GmPYL1 partially restores ABA sensitivity of the Arabidopsis triple mutant pyr1/pyl1/pyl4 . Taken together, our results suggest that soybean GmPYLs are ABA receptors that function by interacting and inhibiting PP2Cs.
AtEAU1 and AtEAU2, Two EAR Motif-Containing ABA Up-Regulated Novel Transcription Repressors Regulate ABA Response in Arabidopsis

Abstract:EAR (Ethylene-responsive element binding factor-associated Amphiphilic Repression) motif-containing transcription repressors have been shown to regulate plant growth and development, and plant responses to plant hormones and environmental stresses including biotic and abiotic stresses. However, the functions of most EAR-motif-containing proteins remain largely uncharacterized. The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) also plays important roles in regulating plant responses to abiotic stresses via activation/repression of ABA-responsive genes. We report here the identification and functional characterization of two ABA-responsive EAR motif-containing protein genes, AtEAU1 (Arabidopsis thaliana EAR motif-containing ABAUp-regulated 1) and AtEAU2. Quantitative RT-PCR results show that the expressions of AtEAU1 and AtEAU2 were increased by ABA treatment, and were decreased in the ABA biosynthesis mutant aba1-5. Assays in transfected Arabidopsis protoplasts show that both AtEAU1 and AtEAU2 were specifically localized in the nucleus, and when recruited to the promoter region of the reporter gene by a fused DNA binding domain, repressed reporter gene expression. By using T-DNA insertion mutants and a gene-edited transgene-free mutant generated by CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing, we performed ABA sensitivity assays, and found that ABA sensitivity in the both ateau1 and ateau2 single mutants was increased in seedling greening assays. ABA sensitivity in the ateau1 ateau2 double mutants was also increased, but was largely similar to the ateau1 single mutants. On the other hand, all the mutants showed a wild type response to ABA in root elongation assays. Quantitative RT-PCR results show that the expression level of PYL4, an ABA receptor gene was increased, whereas that of ABI2, a PP2C gene was decreased in the ateau1 and ateau1 single, and the ateau1 ateau2 double mutants. In summary, our results suggest that AtEAU1 and AtEAU2 are ABA-response genes, and AtEAU1 and AtEAU2 are novel EAR motif-containing transcription repressors that negatively regulate ABA responses in Arabidopsis, likely by regulating the expression of some ABA signaling key regulator genes.

AtPUB19, a U-box E3 ubiquitin ligase, negatively regulates abscisic acid and drought responses in Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract:Ubiquitination is an important protein post-translational modification, which is involved in various cellular processes in higher plants, and U-box E3 ligases play important roles in diverse functions in eukaryotes. Here, we describe the functions of Arabidopsis thaliana PUB19 (AtPUB19), which we demonstrated in an in vitro assay to encode a U-box type E3 ubiquitin ligase. AtPUB19 was up-regulated by drought, salt, cold, and abscisic acid (ABA). Down-regulation of AtPUB19 led to hypersensitivity to ABA, enhanced ABA-induced stomatal closing, and enhanced drought tolerance, while AtPUB19 overexpression resulted in the reverse phenotypes. Molecular analysis showed that the expression levels of a number of ABA and stress marker genes were altered in both AtPUB19 overexpressing and atpub19-1 mutant plants. In summary, our data show that AtPUB19 negatively regulates ABA and drought responses in A. thaliana.

Abstract:Ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation is crucial for plants to respond to environmental stresses, with E3 ligases being particularly important in regulating responses to abiotic stresses. This study focused on the role of E3 ubiquitin ligase in osmotic stress response in desiccation-tolerant mosses. We identified PROTEOLYSIS1 (PRT1), a RING-type E3 ligase, in Syntrichia caninervis . Our in vivo and in vitro assays confirmed that ScPRT1 actively targets the abscisic acid-insensitive 3 (ABI3) protein for degradation. Overexpressing ScPRT1 in Arabidopsis and S. caninervis reduced their tolerance to salt and drought stresses. Transcriptome analysis showed that ScPRT1 overexpression downregulates ABI3 and suppresses genes in the ERFs and DREBs subfamilies, leading to impaired stress resistance. This research enhances our understanding of abiotic stress responses in bryophytes and highlights the significance of protein ubiquitination in these plants.

Abstract:It is known that the clade A protein phosphatase 2Cs (PP2Cs), including ABI1 and ABI2 and other PP2C members, are key players that function directly downstream of the PYR/PYL/RCAR abscisic acid (ABA) receptors. Here, identification of a crucial site for function of ABI2 protein phosphatase in ABA signalling is reported. It was observed that a calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) phosphorylation site-like motif (CPL) in the ABI2 molecule is required for the interactions of ABI2 with the two members of the ABA receptors PYL5 and PYL9 and with a downstream protein kinase SnRK2.6, and for the catalytic activity of ABI2 in vitro, as well as for the response of ABI2 to the ABA receptors PYL5/PYL9 in relation to the ABA receptor-induced inhibition of the ABI2 phosphatase activity. Further, genetic evidence was provided to demonstrate that this CPL is required for the function of ABI2 to mediate ABA signalling. These data reveal that this CPL is an important site necessary for both the phosphatase activity of ABI2 and the functional interaction between ABI2 and PYL5/9 ABA receptors, providing new information to understand primary events of ABA signal transduction.

Abstract:E3 ubiquitin ligases (UBLs), as enzymes capable of specifically recognizing target proteins in the process of protein ubiquitination, play crucial roles in regulating responses to abiotic stresses such as drought, salt, and temperature. Abscisic acid (ABA), a plant endogenous hormone, is essential to regulating plant growth, development, disease resistance, and defense against abiotic stresses, and acts through a complex ABA signaling pathway. Hormone signaling transduction relies on protein regulation, and E3 ubiquitin ligases play important parts in regulating the ABA pathway. Therefore, this paper reviews the ubiquitin-proteasome-mediated protein degradation pathway, ABA-related signaling pathways, and the regulation of ABA-signaling-pathway-related genes by E3 ubiquitin ligases, aiming to provide references for further exploration of the relevant research on how plant E3 ubiquitin ligases regulate the ABA pathway.
ROP11 GTPase Negatively Regulates ABA Signaling by Protecting ABI1 Phosphatase Activity from Inhibition by the ABA Receptor RCAR1/PYL9 in Arabidopsis.

Abstract:The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) regulates many key processes in plants, such as seed germination, seedling growth, and abiotic stress tolerance. In recent years, a minimal set of core components of a major ABA signaling pathway has been discovered. These components include a RCAR/PYR/PYL family of ABA receptors, a group of PP2C phosphatases, and three SnRK2 kinases. However, how the interactions between the receptors and their targets are regulated by other proteins remains largely unknown. In a companion paper published in this issue, we showed that ROP11, a member of the plant-specific Rho-like small GTPase family, negatively regulates multiple ABA responses in Arabidopsis. The current work demonstrated that the constitutively active ROP11 (CA-ROP11) can modulate the RCAR1/PYL9-mediated ABA signaling pathway based on reconstitution assays in Arabidopsis thaliana protoplasts. Furthermore, using luciferase complementation imaging, yeast two-hybrid assays, co-immunoprecipitation assays in Nicotiana benthamiana and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays, we demonstrated that CA-ROP11 directly interacts with ABI1, a signaling component downstream of RCAR1/PYL9. Finally, we provided biochemical evidence that CA-ROP11 protects ABI1 phosphatase activity from inhibition by RCAR1/PYL9 and thus negatively regulates ABA signaling in plant cells. A model of how ROP11 acts to negatively regulate ABA signaling is presented.

Abstract:DWD (DDB1 binding WD40) proteins have been reported as substrate receptors for cullin–RING ubiquitin ligase 4 complexes (CRL4), a family of E3 ligases. Abscisic acid (ABA) plays an important role in plant responses to abiotic stresses, such as drought and salinity. Upon screening T-DNA mutants of DWD genes for ABA responses we obtained several candidates that exhibited ABA-hypersensitivity, and one was named DWA3 (DWD hypersensitive to ABA 3). DWA3 interacted with DDB1, which has been proposed to be an adaptor protein of the CUL4 E3 ligase complex, in yeast two-hybrid assays. Also, association between DWA3 and the DDB1–CUL4 machinery was detected in vivo by co-immunoprecipitation assays, indicating that DWA3 may function as a substrate receptor for CRL4. ABA-inducible transcription factors (ABI5 and AtMYC2) and their downstream genes were hyper-induced by ABA in dwa3. Taken together, we suggest that DWA3 is a negative regulator of ABA responses and may be involved in protein degradation mediated by CRL4.

Abstract:Main conclusion The Arabidopsis transcription factor NAC103 is up-regulated and its encoding protein is stabilized by ABA treatment, which positively regulates several ABA-responsive downstream genes during seed germination and seedlings growth. Abstract The Arabidopsis transcription factor NAC103 was previously found to be involved in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and DNA damage responses. In this study, we report the new biological function of NAC103 in abscisic acid (ABA) response during seed germination and seedling growth in Arabidopsis. The expression of NAC103 was up-regulated and the NAC103 protein was stabilized by ABA treatment. Both the loss-of-function mutants of NAC103 , created by targeted gene-editing, and the over-expression plants of NAC103 have no obvious germination-related phenotype under normal growth conditions. However, under exogenous ABA treatment conditions, the NAC103 mutants were less sensitive to ABA during seed germination; in contrast, the NAC103 over-expression plants were more sensitive to ABA during seed germination and young seedling growth. Further, NAC103 regulated several ABA-responsive downstream genes including MYB78 , MYB3 , PLP3 , AMY1 , and RGL2 . These results demonstrate that NAC103 positively regulates ABA response in Arabidopsis.

Abstract:The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) is essential in plant responding to biotic and abiotic stresses. Although ABA signaling model is well established in Arabidopsis, ABA receptor PYL family and clade A PP2C subfamily are not yet characterized in monocot model plant Brachypodium distachyon. In this study, we identified 12 PYLs and 8 clade A PP2Cs from B. distachyon genome and successfully cloned 12 PYLs and 7 clade A PP2Cs. Bioinformatic and expression analyses showed that most of the identified genes respond to several signal molecules and abiotic stresses. Protein-protein interaction analysis revealed that many BdPYLs and BdPP2CAs participate in the classic ABA-PYL-PP2C-SnRK2 signaling pathway. A clade A PP2C, designated BdPP2CA6, interacted with BdPYL11 in the absence of ABA and localized in nucleus. Most clade A PP2C members from Arabidopsis showed negatively regulation in ABA signaling pathway, whereas BdPP2CA6-overexpression transgenic Arabidopsis showed ABA hypersensitive phenotype, resulting in enhanced stomatal closure and salinity tolerance. Our results indicate that BdPP2CA6 positively regulates ABA and stress signal pathway in transgenic Arabidopsis plant seedlings.

Abstract:ABA Receptor Rumbled? The plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA) is critical for normal development and for mediating plant responses to stressful environmental conditions. Now, two papers present analyses of candidate ABA receptors (see the news story by Pennisi ). Ma et al. (p. 1064; published online 30 April) and Park et al. (p. 1068, published online 30 April) used independent strategies to search for proteins that physically interact with ABI family phosphatase components of the ABA response signaling pathway. Both groups identified different members of the same family of proteins, which appear to interact with ABI proteins to form a heterocomplex that can act as the ABA receptor. The variety of both families suggests that the ABA receptor may not be one entity, but rather a class of closely related complexes, which may explain previous difficulties in establishing its identity.
