Abstract:The stability of detonation propagation at elevated pressure was investigated via linear stability analysis and numerical simulation in one dimension. The effect of finite molecular volume neglected in perfect gas was accounted for with a real gas model based on the Noble-Abel equation of state and was characterized with a non-dimensional covolume parameter ( β ). The neutral stability boundary was derived from linear stability analysis in various planes, including overdrive factor - heat content plane, activation energy - heat content plane and heat capacity ratio - overdrive factor plane. It was found that the finite molecular volume generally stabilizes the pulsating detonation compared to the perfect gas based solutions. On the contrary, in the limit of weak heat release and in the Newtonian limit, including the finite molecular volume destabilizes the pulsating detonation. These two effects were both enhanced as β increases. They were relatively minor when β was less than 1 and became significant as β was larger than 1. The above findings obtained from linear stability analysis were validated by performing numerical simulations using a solver developed to handle compressible reactive flow in non-ideal fluid. Satisfactory consistencies were obtained between the analytical solutions and simulations for both the stability of detonation as well as the period of oscillation of unstable cases. In order to explain the stabilization effect of the finite molecular volume on cellular detonation found in previous study, a new neutral stability boundary was proposed in the isentropic coefficient - covolume plane. The new boundary contribute to better understanding the variation of cellular structure regularity seen in previous simulations even though the present analysis was carried out for a lower spatial dimension. Detailed discussions are provided on the potential implications for detonation engine design and the implementation of numerical solvers at elevated pressure. Novelty and significance statement 1. For the first time, the effect of finite molecular volume on detonation stability was revealed via linear and non-linear stability analyses 2. The stabilizing effect of the finite molecular volume has potential strong practical implications since the stability has a dominant effect on the near-limit detonation behavior
