Abstract:Infrared (IR) photodetection is important for light communications, military, agriculture, and related fields. Organic transistors are investigated as photodetectors. However, due to their large band gap, most organic transistors can only respond to ultraviolet and visible light. Here high performance IR phototransistors with ternary semiconductors of organic donor/acceptor complex and semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), without deep cooling requirements are developed. Due to both the ultralow intermolecular electronic transition energy of the complex and charge transport properties of SWCNTs, the phototransistor realizes broadband photodetection with photoresponse up to 2600 nm. Moreover, it exhibits outstanding performance under 2000 nm light with photoresponsivity of 2.75 x 10(6) A W-1, detectivity of 3.12 x 10(14) Jones, external quantum efficiency over 10(8)%, and high I-photo/I-dark ratio of 6.8 x 10(5). The device exhibits decent photoresponse to IR light even under ultra-weak light intensity of 100 nW cm(-2). The response of the phototransistor to blackbody irradiation is demonstrated, which is rarely reported for organic phototransistors. Interestingly, under visible light, the device can also be employed as synaptic devices, and important basic functions are realized. This strategy provides a new guide for developing high performance IR optoelectronics based on organic transistors.

Abstract:This decade has seen rapid developments in infrared light sensing and imaging, utilizing innovative materials and deliberate structural designs. Organic semiconducting materials are promising in the next-generation infrared sensing applications due to their unique properties including solution processability, tunable optoelectronic property, and biocompatibility. This Spotlight aims to provide a snapshot of the recent advances in organic infrared light detection technology, specifically for wavelengths beyond 1000 nm, focusing on performance enhancements and new function realizations. Several innovative proof-of-concept demonstrations illustrate the benefits of the rapidly developing organic infrared technology. Finally, we discuss the challenges and perspectives of organic infrared technology.

Abstract:Organic photodiodes (OPDs) have attracted great attention for potential applications in organic optocouplers, image sensors, immune detection and optical communication, due to their advantages of low cost, plenty of functional materials, tunable absorption wavelengths and compatibility with flexible substrates. This article presents an overview of organic photosensitive materials widely used in OPDs, with response spectra regioning from UV to near infra-red. Researches on structure optimization, interface modification, carriers transmission mechanism and internal optical distribution of OPDs are summarized. Some practical applications of the OPDs in optoelectronic fields are also introduced. Finally, an outlook on future development of OPDs is briefly brought up.

Abstract:Narrow-band-gap organic semiconductors have emerged as appealing near-infrared (NIR) sensing materials by virtue of their unique optoelectronic properties. However, their limited carrier mobility impedes the implementation of large-area, dynamic NIR sensor arrays. In this work, high-performance inorganic-organic hybrid phototransistor arrays are achieved for NIR sensing, by taking advantage of the high electron mobility of In2O3 and the strong NIR absorption of a BTPV-4F:PTB7-Th bulk heterojunction (BHJ) with an enhanced photogating effect. As a result, the hybrid phototransistors reach a high responsivity of 1393.0 A W-1, a high specific detectivity of 4.8 x 1012 jones, and a fast response of 0.72 ms to NIR light (900 nm). Meanwhile, an integrated 16 x 16 phototransistor array with a one-transistor-one-phototransistor (1T1PT) architecture is achieved. On the basis of the enhanced photogating effect, the phototransistor array can not only achieve real-time, dynamic NIR light mapping but also implement image preprocessing, which is promising for advanced NIR image sensors.

Abstract:Photodetectors that convert a light signal into an electrical signal have wide applications in light signal detection. As an emerging candidate for next‐generation light sensing, organic photodetectors compensate well for the shortages of the traditional inorganic photodetectors in terms of ease of processing, compatibility with flexible substrates, tunable absorption characteristics, low‐cost manufacturing, and being lightweight. Currently, regular improvements in organic photodetectors are made with respect to their important figure‐of‐merit performances, which have caught up to or even surpassed the performances of inorganic Si and Ge‐based photodetectors. Importantly, the spectral response of organic photodetectors covers a wide range of wavelengths, from the ultraviolet to near‐infrared regions, with low‐band‐gap organic semiconductors as the active medium. In this paper, the working mechanism and recent advances in organic semiconductor photodetectors are comprehensively reviewed and the challenges in the field, mainly focusing on the performance of organic photodetectors, studies oriented toward applications, and the expectations of organic semiconductor photodetectors in the future, are disclosed. Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have many advantages such as high flexibility, large area scalability, easy processing, lightweight, and low‐cost manufacturing, making them ideal candidates for innovative and disruptive applications in image sensing, optical communication, and chemical/biological detection. Their performance parameters have been continuously improved. Here, the development of OPDs as well as their working mechanism and potential applications are reviewed.

Abstract:Organic near‐infrared (NIR) photodetectors with essential applications in medical diagnostics, night vision, remote sensing, and optical communications have attracted intensive research interest. Compared with most conventional inorganic counterparts, organic semiconductors usually have higher absorption coefficients, and their thin active layer could be sufficient to absorb most incident light for effective photogeneration. However, due to the relatively poor charge mobility of organic materials, it remains challenging to inhibit the photogenerated exciton recombination and effectively extract carriers to their respective electrodes. Herein, this challenge was addressed by increasing matrix conductivities of a ternary active layer (D–A–D structure NIR absorber [2TT‐oC6B]:poly(N,N′‐bis‐4‐butylphenyl‐N,N′‐bisphenyl)benzidin [PolyTPD]:[6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester [PCBM] = 1:1:1) upon in situ incident light illumination, significantly accelerating charge transport through percolated interpenetrating paths. The greatly enhanced photoconductivity under illumination is intrinsically related to the unique donor–acceptor molecular structures of PolyTPD and 2TT‐oC6B, whereas stable intermolecular interaction has been verified by systematic molecular dynamics simulation. In addition, an ultrafast charge transfer time of 0.56 ps from the NIR aggregation‐induced luminogens of 2TT‐oC6B absorber to PolyTPD and PCBM measured by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is beneficial for effective exciton dissociation. The solution‐processed organic NIR photodetector exhibits a fast response time of 83 μs and a linear dynamic range value of 111 dB under illumination of 830 nm. Therefore, our work has opened up a pioneering window to enhance photoconductivity through in situ photoirradiation and benefit NIR photodetectors as well as other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have attracted continuous attention due to their outstanding advantages, such as tunability of detecting wavelength, low‐cost manufacturing, compatibility with lightweight and flexible devices, as well as ease of processing. Enormous efforts on performance improvement and application of OPDs have been devoted in the past decades. In this Review, recent advances in device architectures and operation mechanisms of phototransistor, photoconductor, and photodiode based OPDs are reviewed with a focus on the strategies aiming at performance improvement. The application of OPDs in spectrally selective detection, wearable devices, and integrated optoelectronics are also discussed. Furthermore, some future prospects on the research challenges and new opportunities of OPDs are covered.

Abstract:High‐performance near‐infrared organic photodetectors (OPDs) with versatile advanced properties, including large detection areas, mechanical flexibility, and high transparency are realized. By incorporating a thin photo‐absorbing layer, functional blocking layers with a large energy gap, and semitransparent electrodes, the OPDs achieve an average visible transmittance (AVT) up to 53.4% and specific detectivity (D*) of 1.4 × 1013 Jones. Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have experienced remarkable performance improvements over the past decade thanks to significant advancements in organic material synthesis and device architecture engineering. In this study, high‐performance near‐infrared (NIR) OPDs with versatile advanced properties, including large detection areas, mechanical flexibility, and high transparency are realized. By incorporating a thin photo‐absorbing layer, functional blocking layers with a large energy gap, and semitransparent electrodes, the OPDs achieve an average visible transmittance (AVT) of up to 53.4% and color rendering index (CRI) of up to 95 within the human vision photopic response window of 380–780 nm. Both the small (6.44 mm2) and large (256 mm2) detection‐area semitransparent OPDs demonstrate an impressive external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 34% and 36%, and specific detectivity (D*) of 1.4 × 1013 and 1.1 × 1012 Jones, respectively, comparable to silicon‐based inorganic photodetectors. As application demonstrations, OPDs with rigid and flexible substrates are employed for NIR imaging and biosensing, respectively. Notably, the flexible semitransparent OPDs are utilized as signal receivers in conjunction with semitransparent NIR organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) operating as signal producers, demonstrating the feasibility of invisible optical communication. These OPDs represent the best‐performing see‐through devices with flexibility, making them promising candidates for integratable, bio‐compatible, and invisible optical‐sensing applications.

Abstract:Low-dimensional inorganic nanostructures such as quantum dots as well as one- and two-dimensional nanostructures are widely studied and already used in high-performance infrared photodetectors. These structures feature large surface-to-volume ratios, tunable light absorption, and electron-limiting effects. This article reviews the state-of-the-art research of low-dimensional inorganic nanostructures and their application for infrared photodetection. Thanks to nano-structuring, a narrow bandgap, hybrid systems, surface-plasmon resonance, and doping, many common semiconductors have the potential to be used for infrared detection. The basic approaches towards infrared detection are summarized. Furthermore, a selection of very important and special nanostructured materials and their remarkable infrared-detection properties are introduced (e.g., black phosphorus, graphene-based, MoX2-based, III–VII group). Each section in this review describes the corresponding photosensitive properties in detail. The article concludes with an outlook of anticipated future developments in the field.

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have garnered significant attention in fields such as image sensing, health monitoring, and wearable devices due to their exceptional performance. This review summarizes recent research advancements in materials, structures, performance, and applications of narrowband organic photodetectors, hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite photodetectors, flexible organic photodetectors (FOPDs), and photomultiplication type organic photodetectors (PM-OPDs). Organic semiconductors offer substantial potential in optoelectronic devices owing to their low cost, ease of processing, and tunable spectral response. Hybrid perovskite materials extend the spectral response range, FOPDs meet the demands of wearable devices, and PM-OPDs enhance sensitivity, allowing for the detection of weak light signals. Through innovations in materials, structural optimization, and improvements in manufacturing processes, the performance of OPDs has seen significant enhancement. This article also explores the application prospects of these technologies in medical monitoring, optical communications, and image sensing.

Abstract:Organic/inorganic hybrid phototransistors are an emerging class of advanced optoelectronic devices. The separated organic high absorption layer and inorganic carrier transport layer endow hybrid phototransistors with remarkable sensing performance in a broad spectrum. The flexibility, ambient stability, and process compatibility of organic and metal oxide semiconductors also render them promising for large-area matrix integration and wearable applications. Moreover, extraordinary photoelectric behaviors, such as bidirectional photo responses and the versatility of in-sensor computing functions, including feature extraction and image enhancement, can be obtained by rational customization of the hybrid heterojunctions. In this Spotlight on Applications, we review the recent progress of organic/ inorganic hybrid phototransistors and their applications in photodetection, sensor arrays, flexible electronics, and in-sensor computing.
Doping Compensation Enables High‐Detectivity Infrared Organic Photodiodes for Image Sensing

Abstract:Infrared organic photodiodes have gained increasing attention due to their great application potentials in night vision, optical communication and all‐weather imaging. However, the commonly occurring high dark current and low detectivity impede infrared photodetectors from portable applications at room‐temperature. Herein, we developed an efficient and generic doping compensation strategy to improve the detectivity of infrared organic photodiodes. A series of n‐type organic semiconductors were investigated and we found that doping compensation strategy not only reduced the trap density of states and dark currents, but also restrained the non‐radiative recombination with improved charge transport and collection. As a result, an ultralow noise spectral density of 8 × 10–15 A Hz–1/2 as well as a high specific detectivity over 1013 Jones in 780–1070 nm were achieved at room temperature. More importantly, the high‐performance infrared organic photodiodes can be successfully applied in high pixel density image arrays without patterning sensing layers. These findings provide important compensation design insights that will be crucial to further improve the performance of infrared organic photodiodes in the future. Enabling a High-Sensitivity and Fast-Response Organic Phototransistor Based on an “embedded” Heterojunction Toward Broadband High-Speed Imaging

Abstract:Organic phototransistors (OPTs) are promising candidates for broadband light detection, offering advantages of spectral tunability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility. Nonetheless, their practical utility has been impeded by issues such as low exciton dissociation efficiency and persistent photoconductivity. To address this challenge, an electron acceptor (TCNQ) was doped in pentacene as the donor, resulting in the formation of self-organized "embedded" heterojunctions within a single-crystal matrix. This unique organic architecture led to the development of high-performance OPTs, boasting an exceptional photoresponsivity of 1.1 x 10(4) A W-1 and a specific detectivity of 2.1 x 10(13) Jones. Importantly, the device exhibited a fast response time of about 92 mu s, maintaining a high photosensitivity exceeding 100, surpassing the capability of detectors constructed from pure organic single crystals. Notably, this "embedded" heterojunction design also enabled the superior infrared photoresponse at 1550 nm by narrowing the band gap. The enhanced performance is a result of the efficient separation of Frenkel excitons and collection of free charges driven by the built-in field at the "embedded" pentacene/TCNQ interface. Furthermore, these OPTs demonstrated versatility in capturing high-resolution images across multiple spectral bands, emphasizing the potential of molecule doping to enhance organic photodetector performance as a straightforward alternative.

Abstract:Tremendous efforts are devoted to explore 2D inorganic/organic based on different charge transfer (CT) types for photodetection. In this review, a comprehensive summary on 2D inorganic/organic CT heterojunction photodetectors with a whole new perspective is presented. Furthermore, the expanded functions and development on new materials, new structure, large scale compatibility, in‐depth bio‐application, and retino‐morphic photonic are also outlined. 2D materials possess superior optoelectronic properties, such as ultrahigh mobility and broadband photoresponse, making them one of the most vital platforms for diversified photodetectors. However, atomic thickness 2D materials usually suffer from intrinsic low absorption. To promote the photodetector performance, a feasible method is to integrate the 2D materials with low‐cost, flexible, and tunable organics that form a charge transfer (CT) heterojunction. As results, in‐depth multifunctional CT 2D‐inorganic/organic detector exhibits extended functions such as low‐power consumption, in‐memory detection, and optical‐bio synapse to meet the demand of contemporary photonic cell. Particularly, the progresses in wafer‐scale monocrystal of both 2D and organic materials render vast potential applications with operation frequencies ranging from ultraviolet to terahertz. Here, the recent advances of 2D‐inorganic/organic CT photodetectors are comprehensively reviewed by several classifications. Future developments and applications in optical biology, synapsis, and machine vision are also highlighted.

Abstract:Organic photodetectors (OPDs) have drawn extensive research efforts due to their tailorable spectral response, ease of processing, compatibility with flexible devices and cooling-free operations. In this review, we outline the promising strategies for constructing high-performance and highly stable photodiodes-based OPDs from the perspectives of molecular engineering, morphology control, and device structure design. Firstly, the impact of molecular design and morphology control on OPD performance is clearly underlined and the molecular design rules and quantitative analysis methods are presented for high-performance OPDs. Subsequently, some striking device designs for multifunctional applications are discussed to elucidate the corresponding mechanism for various responses. What follows are the research efforts of boosting OPD stability for commercial applications. This review not only presents the detailed discussion on various OPD strategies aiming at simultaneously enhancing performance and stability but also provides some insights for the remaining challenges to make further breakthrough of OPDs.

Abstract:Sensitive detection of near‐infrared (NIR) light enables many important applications in both research and industry. Current organic photodetectors suffer from low NIR sensitivity typically due to early absorption cutoff, low responsivity, and/or large dark/noise current under bias. Herein, organic photodetectors based on a novel ultranarrow‐bandgap nonfullerene acceptor, CO1‐4Cl, are presented, showcasing a remarkable responsivity over 0.5 A W−1 in the NIR spectral region (920–960 nm), which is the highest among organic photodiodes. By effectively delaying the onset of the space charge limited current and suppressing the shunt leakage current, the optimized devices show a large specific detectivity around 1012 Jones for NIR spectral region up to 1010 nm, close to that of a commercial Si photodiode. The presented photodetectors can also be integrated in photoplethysmography for real‐time heart‐rate monitoring, suggesting its potential for practical applications.

Abstract:The infrared photodetector can obtain IR radiation either reflected by or radiated from the target,which is a unique property and makes infrared photodetectors play an important role in areas such as national defense,communica-tions,remote sensing,and aerospace along with other advantages,such as strong anti-interference,full-time detection, long detection range,and high-resolution imaging. The infrared photodetector is undergoing radical development from the application of the first generation multielement detectors in the 1940s to the striving for the proposal of SWaP(3) concepts in the third generation in the late 1990s. Traditional infrared photodetectors,of which the advancement focus on improving performance indicators such as array size,sensitivity,and resolution,using light intensity information for imaging,are sluggish to meet future demanding such as recognizing diverse targets,facing environmental complexity, and dealing with multiform tasks at the same time. Infrared photodetectors for multidimensional optical information acquisition provide new routes to improve the device performance and meet future needs. Infrared photodetector obtains not only abundant intrinsic information of light besides intensity,such as phase,wavelength,polarization,and momentum,but also external information like optical path. This paper focuses on the multi-dimension infrared detection extracting information of wavelength,polarization,phase,and the optical path of the targets,which does not only summarize the research progress of infrared photodetectors from the aspects of new principles,new materials,and new structures,but also put forward the idea and outlook for the development direction of the multi-dimensional infrared photodetectors.

Abstract:The last eight years (2009-2017) have seen an explosive growth of interest in organic-inorganic halide perovskites in the research communities of photovoltaics and light-emitting diodes. In addition, recent advancements have demonstrated that this type of perovskite has a great potential in the technology of light-signal detection with a comparable performance to commercially available crystalline Si and III-V photodetectors. The contemporary growth of state-of-the-art multifunctional perovskites in the field of light-signal detection has benefited from its outstanding intrinsic optoelectronic properties, including photoinduced polarization, high drift mobilities, and effective charge collection, which are excellent for this application. Photoactive perovskite semiconductors combine effective light absorption, allowing detection of a wide range of electromagnetic waves from ultraviolet and visible, to the near-infrared region, with low-cost solution processability and good photon yield. This class of semiconductor might empower breakthrough photodetector technology in the field of imaging, optical communications, and biomedical sensing. Therefore, here, the focus is specifically on the critical understanding of materials synthesis, design, and engineering for the next-stage development of perovskite photodetectors and highlighting the current challenges in the field, which need to be further studied in the future.

Abstract:This review article comprehensively overviews recent advancements in infrared photon detectors based on solution‐processable semiconductors, such as perovskites, organic compounds, 2D materials, and colloidal quantum dots. Solution‐processable semiconductors offer numerous benefits such as mechanical flexibility, ease of low‐temperature fabrication, cost‐effectiveness, and lightweight‐nature, enabling their universal application in infrared imaging. High‐resolution infrared (IR) imaging technology holds substantial significance across diverse fields including biomedical imaging, environmental surveillance, and IR digital cameras. Current IR detectors used in commercial applications are based on ultra‐high vacuum‐processed traditional inorganic semiconductors like silicon or III‐V compounds (e.g., Si, Ge, and InGaAs). However, the rapid advancements in applications such as autonomous vehicles, virtual reality, and point‐of‐care healthcare are driving an escalating need for innovative imaging technologies. This review aims to bridge the gap by exploring solution‐processed semiconductor photodetectors (PDs), which offer distinct advantages including cost‐effectiveness, tunable spectral response, and potential for multiple‐exciton generation. These characteristics make them particularly suitable for optical communication, IR imaging, and biological monitoring applications. This review provides comprehensive insights into the research trends pertaining to solution‐processed IR detectors and imagers based on colloidal quantum dots, perovskites, organic compounds, and 2D materials. The review commences with the current market worth of image sensors, the fundamental principles of single‐pixel and multipixel array IR imagers, and key parameters used to assess IR detector performance. In essence, the review concludes with a summary of recent advancements and future prospects for next‐generation IR PD devices and their potential application as an IR imager.
