Abstract:Large old trees are keystone ecological structures that provide vital ecosystem services to humans. However, there are few large-scale empirical studies on patterns of diversity and density of large old trees in human-dominated landscapes. We present the results of the first nationwide study in China to investigate the patterns of diversity and density of large old trees in human-dominated landscapes. We collated data on 682,730 large trees ≥100 years old from 198 Chinese regions to quantify tree species diversity, tree density and maximum tree age patterns. We modelled the effects of natural environmental variables (e.g. climate and topography) and anthropogenic variables (e.g. human population density and city age) on these measures. We found a low density of large old trees across study regions (0.36 trees/km2), and large variation in species richness among regions (ranging from 1 to 232 species). More than 95% of trees were <500 years old. The best fit models showed that: (1) Species diversity (species richness adjusted by region size) was positively associated with mean annual rainfall and city age; (2) Density of clustered trees, which are mostly remnants of ancient woods, was negatively influenced by human population density and rural population (% of total population). In contrast, the density of scattered trees, which are mostly managed by local people, was positively correlated with mean annual rainfall and human population density. To better protect large old trees in cities and other highly-populated areas, conservation policy should protect ancient wood remnants, mitigate the effects environmental change (e.g. habitat fragmentation), minimize the negative effects of human activities (e.g. logging), and mobilize citizens to participate in conservation activities (e.g. watering trees during droughts).

Abstract:Extremely old trees are valued and revered by residents in many countries. Yet information about the ages and locations of the oldest living trees is rarely available, especially at the national level. We compiled a series of dendrochronological datasets of the age and location of very old trees (>= 1000 years old) across China, and found that there are at least 98 ancient living trees exceeding 1000 years of age in the country. The oldest living individual we identified was a Qilian juniper (Juniperus przewalskii) tree that, as of 2009, was determined to be 2230 years old. The oldest trees occurred most frequently in remote, high-elevation areas.

Abstract:Old trees are irreplaceable natural resources that provide multifaceted benefits to humans. Current conservation strategies focus primarily on large-sized trees that were often considered old. However, some studies have demonstrated that small trees can be more than thousands of years old, suggesting that conventional size-focused perceptions may hamper the efficiency of current conservation strategies for old trees. Here, we compiled paired age and diameter data using tree-ring records sampled from 121,918 trees from 269 species around the world to detect whether tree size is a strong predictor of age for old trees and whether the spatial distribution of small old trees differs from that of large old trees. We found that tree size was a weak predictor of age for old trees, and diameter explained only 10% of the total age variance of old trees. Unlike large-sized trees that are mainly in warm, wet environments and protected, small old trees are predominantly in cold, dry environments and mostly unprotected, indicating that size-focused conservation failed to protect some of the oldest trees. To conserve old trees, comprehensive old-tree recognition systems are needed that consider not only tree size but also age and external characteristics. Protected areas designed for small old trees are urgently needed.

Abstract:Old trees have many ecological and socio-cultural values. However, knowledge of the factors influencing their long-term persistence in human-dominated landscapes is limited. Here, using an extensive database (nearly 1.8 million individual old trees belonging to 1,580 species) from China, we identified which species were most likely to persist as old trees in human-dominated landscapes and where they were most likely to occur. We found that species with greater potential height, smaller leaf size and diverse human utilization attributes had the highest probability of long-term persistence. The persistence probabilities of human-associated species (taxa with diverse human utilization attributes) were relatively high in intensively cultivated areas. Conversely, the persistence probabilities of spontaneous species (taxa with no human utilization attributes and which are not cultivated) were relatively high in mountainous areas or regions inhabited by ethnic minorities. The distinctly different geographic patterns of persistence probabilities of the two groups of species were related to their dissimilar responses to heterogeneous human activities and site conditions. A small number of human-associated species dominated the current cohort of old trees, while most spontaneous species were rare and endemic. Our study revealed the potential impacts of human activities on the long-term persistence of trees and the associated shifts in species composition in human-dominated landscapes.

Abstract:Old trees are remarkable for their ability to endure for centuries or even millennia, acting as recordkeepers of historical climate and custodians of genetic diversity. The secret to their longevity has long been a subject of fascination. Despite the challenges associated with studying old trees, such as massive size, slow growth rate, long lifespan and often remote habitat, accumulating studies have investigated the mechanisms underlying tree aging and longevity over the past decade. The recent publication of high‐quality genomes of long‐lived tree species, coupled with research on stem cell function and secondary metabolites in longevity, has brought us closer to unlocking the secrets of arboreal longevity. This review provides an overview of the global distribution of old trees and examines the environmental and anthropogenic factors that shape their presence. We summarize the contributions of physiological characteristics, stem cell activity, and immune system responses to their extraordinary longevity. We also explore the genetic and epigenetic 'longevity code', which consists of resistance and defense genes, DNA repair genes and patterns of DNA methylation modification. Further, we highlight key areas for future research that could enhance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying tree longevity.

Abstract:Forest age structure, shaped by past land-use and land-cover changes (LULCC), is pivotal for estimating ecosystem carbon sinks. China's extensive LULCC in recent decades has led to a complex forest age structure, but its impact on the carbon sink remains uncertain. Here, using a process-based ecosystem model with an explicit representation of forest age cohorts, we estimate China's terrestrial carbon sink as 198 +/- 54 TgC yr-1- 1 in the 2010s, mainly contributed by middle-aged forests. The existing forests in 2020 contribute most to the future total carbon sink, but its contribution will decrease significantly by- 1.1 ti- 0.35 TgC yr-1- 1 until 2100 due to forest aging and the slowdown of CO2 2 concentration growth. Future re/afforestation will enhance carbon sink by increasing forest area and rejuvenating forest demography. Our study emphasizes the limited future carbon sink due to forest aging, implying that realizing China's carbon neutrality should not rely excessively on ecosystem carbon sink.
The current situation and countermeasures for conservation of ancient and famous trees in Laoshan, Qingdao, China

Abstract:ABSTRACT: This study aimed to examined the characteristics of ancient and famous trees in Laoshan District, Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China, including species composition, number of individuals, origin, distribution, and age structure, to highlight the values of inheriting history and culture, improving urban environment, protecting regional biodiversity, promoting tourism economy and so on. The analyses was made through field surveys and quantitative analyses of statistical data and relevant literature, The main issues in their conservation are investigated and priority conservation measures are proposed. Results showed that there are 290 ancient and famous trees, comprising 42 species, 34 genera, and 26 families. These included four types of ancient and famous trees with different origins, namely religious trees planted by Buddhists, naturally preserved wild trees, trees with agricultural backgrounds for providing food or used as offerings, and exotic trees introduced from other places. There are relatively more local species and comparatively more elder trees. Ancient and famous trees are distributed in large numbers in Mountain Lao Scenic Area and many of them fall into temperate genera. Currently, ancient and famous tree conservation in Laoshan District is challenging because of issues such as habitat deterioration, severe effects of natural hazards, pests and diseases, weakening physiological function, and inadequate management. Based on all these analyses, countermeasures are proposed, which include regularly inspecting ancient and famous trees, restoring their habitats, reinforcing pest and disease controls, promoting studies on conservation technologies, improving management practices, increasing grants, and reforming the ownership system of ancient and famous trees.

Abstract:Large old trees (LOTs) are important ecological assets that contribute significantly to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and local culture. This study analyzed the abundance, species composition, spatial and altitudinal distribution patterns, and conservation needs of LOTs in Baisha County, tropical southern China. We conducted a comprehensive field survey of 301 LOTs and recorded their biological characteristics, geographical locations, and environmental conditions. Species importance values were calculated, and the spatial distribution was analyzed using GIS techniques. Redundancy analysis (RDA) examined the relationships between LOT diversity and environmental factors. The results indicated a complex and diverse stock dominated by species from the Moraceae family, particularly of the genus Ficus . The structural analysis displayed a skewed age distribution, with a higher frequency of younger trees and a decline in older classes. Spatial analysis showed that LOTs are concentrated in the northwestern and central areas and are favored by microclimatic conditions, soil types, and historical land-use practices. The abundance and species richness of LOTs were greater at intermediate elevations. Redundancy analysis highlighted the intricate relationships between LOT diversity, abundance, and socioeconomic factors. This study provided crucial insights into the ecology and conservation requirements for LOTs in Baisha. The findings underscored the importance of targeted conservation efforts, particularly for older trees and mid-elevation habitats. We recommended integrating ecological research, long-term monitoring, traditional ecological knowledge, and community involvement in formulating conservation strategies to preserve these ecologically and culturally significant trees for future generations.

Evolvement of Spatio-Temporal Pattern and Driving Forces Analysis of Ancient Trees Based on the Geographically Weighted Regression Model in Guangzhou and Foshan, China

Abstract:Ancient trees play an important ecosystem service role in high-density cities, revealing the zonal distribution characteristics of vegetation under climate influence. The ancient trees in Guangzhou and Foshan in 2018 and 2023 were taken as study objects to explore the evolution of their spatio-temporal patterns and to analyze the spatial differentiation characteristics of their driving factors using the geographical weighted regression (GWR) model. The results showed the following: (1) The ancient trees in Guangzhou and Foshan were composed of typical subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forest communities, mainly represented by broad-leaved species of evergreen dicotyledonous plants. The dominant species mainly included Litchi chinensis, Ficus microcarpa, Canarium pimela, Ficus virens, and Dimocarpus longan. However, there was a significant difference between Guangzhou and Foshan. (2) The number of ancient trees in Guangzhou showed negative growth, while Foshan saw a significant increase. However, species diversity in both areas increased, with the highest diversity in the northeast, higher diversity in the south-central part, and lower diversity in the western and northwestern parts. (3) The maximum kernel density of ancient trees in Guangzhou and Foshan differed 22-fold, indicating a spatial distribution pattern of multiple clusters. (4) The GWR model effectively explained the driving factors of the heterogeneity of the spatial distribution of ancient trees. The results showed that artificial disturbance was the most important factor affecting the spatial distribution of ancient trees in high-density urban agglomerations in the same vegetation zone. The study clarified the characteristics of the spatial distribution and species diversity of ancient trees in the region, revealed the driving factors for the evolution of the spatial pattern of ancient trees in highly urbanized areas, and provided guidelines for policies and measures for enhancing biodiversity and conserving germplasm resources in the region.
Environmental Factors Driving the Spatial Distribution Pattern of Venerable Trees in Sichuan Province, China

Abstract:Venerable trees are important natural resources and cultural heritage, offering historical, ecological, social and economic value. However, global warming and anthropogenic activities have threatened their welfare and survival. A comprehensive understanding of their current and future spatial patterns, vis-á-vis environmental conditions, can inform the co-management of sustainable resource use and conservation. We employed the existing spatial occurrence data and environmental variables (bioclimate and elevation) to simulate the optimal habitats for venerable trees in China's Sichuan Province. We evaluated the current and future climate scenarios of 2100 with double CO2 concentration. The BIOCLIM and QGIS spatial analyses assessed the primary factors of geographical distribution. The results identified 10,720 venerable trees from 123 species, 81 genera and 42 families. Cupressus funebris dominated, with the maximum importance value, followed by Ginkgo biloba, Ficus virens var. sublanceolata, and Phoebe zhennan. The elevation distribution of tree abundance and species richness demonstrated a unimodal pattern, skewing to the low-elevation end, with a concentration in the 600–1500 m low-medium altitude. The majority of trees and excellent habitats were found in eastern Sichuan with a less harsh terrain and climate. The bio3 (isothermality) and bio7 (temperature annual range) factors significantly influenced tree occurrence. Temperature imposed a greater effect on distribution than moisture under the current climate scenario. For the future climate-change scenario, the suitable habitats were predicted to maintain an overall stable pattern, with largely contiguous expansions of better habitats. However, climate warming would shrink the excellent habitats on the plains. The findings can inform strategies and guidelines for venerable-tree conservation in Sichuan. Furthermore, vulnerable areas could be identified. The future range expansion sites could be enlisted to cultivate new trees to replenish the venerable-tree pool. Habitat patches that remain sustainable could provide refugia with the potential for protected-area designation.

Mapping Spatial Distribution of Forest Age in China

Abstract:Abstract Forest stand age is a meaningful metric, which reflects the past disturbance legacy, provides guidelines for forest management practices, and is an important factor in qualifying forest carbon cycles and carbon sequestration potential. Reliable large‐scale forest stand age information with high spatial resolutions, however, is difficult to obtain. In this study, we developed a top‐down method to downscale the provincial statistics of national forest inventory data into 1 km stand age map using climate data and light detection and ranging‐derived forest height. We find that the distribution of forest stand age in China is highly heterogeneous across the country, with a mean value of ~42.6 years old. The relatively young stand age for Chinese forests is mostly due to the large proportion of newly planted forests (0–40 years old), which are more prevailing in south China. Older forests (stand age > 60 years old) are more frequently found in east Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau and the central mountain areas of west and northeast China, where human activities are less intensive. Among the 15 forest types, forests dominated by species of Taxodiaceae, with the exception of Cunninghamia lanceolata stands, have the oldest mean stand age (136 years), whereas Pinus massoniana forests are the youngest (18 years). We further identified uncertainties associated with our forest age map, which are high in west and northeast China. Our work documents the distribution of forest stand age in China at a high resolution which is useful for carbon cycle modeling and the sustainable use of China's forest resources.
Dynamics of Phylogenetic Structure in Fagus Hayatae Communities Vary Across Temporal and Spatial Scales

Abstract:The phylogenetic structure of communities is a fundamental component in our ability to understand community assembly processes and species coexistence.However,although there have been many studies of the spatial and temporal variation in community structure,few have applied these observations to the dynamics of phylogenetic structure.Here,we performed such an analysis to study temporal and spatial variations in the phylogenetic structure of Fagus hayatae communities,Class Ⅱ protected plant,in China.In 2006,all free-standing woody stems with a diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥1cm were tagged,mapped,identified,and measured for DBH,and height in a 1 hm2 forest dynamic plot in Qingliangfeng National Nature Reserve,China.This was followed by re-censuses in 2011 and 2016,in which we recorded the survival status and DBH for previously recorded stems and documented new stems with DBH ≥≥ 1cm.On the basis of these three censuses spread across a decade (2006,2011,2016),we measured the dynamics of the phylogenetic structure at three spatial scales (10m,20m,and 50m).We used global seed plant phylogenetic data to construct a phylogenetic tree of F.hayatae communities,and selected the mean phylogenetic distance (MPD),mean nearest taxon distance (MNTD),net relatedness index (NRI),and nearest taxon index (NTI) to describe the phylogenetic structure of F.hayatae communities.Additionally,we randomly resampled 999 plots at 10m,20m,50m scales using a moving split-window technique to create plots at different spatial scales.Analysis across spatial and temporal scales produced the following results.(1) On decadal time scales,the species richness and abundance of F.hayatae communities both decreased.MPD decreased,whereas MNTD increased.NRI and NTI both significantly positively increased at large scales,but did not change at small scales.(2) As the spatial extent of analyses increased,so did the strength of the trends observed.Thus,the phylogenetic structure of F.hayatae communities showed a clustering pattern and was spatial scale dependent.The largest variation in the phylogenetic structure across time was found at the 50m scale.We concluded that from 2006 to 2016,the phylogenetic structure of F.hayatae communities was clustering,whereas the phylogenetic relationships between nearest species became more distant.Moreover,the effects of environmental filtering dominated the phylogenetic structure dynamics of F.hayatae communities at large scales.This is in contrast to the effects of stochastic processes and interspecific competition,which dominated at small scales.Against a background of global climate change and forest degradation,further studies on scale dependence are needed to gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of community assembly,and to protect these endangered species.
Sparse large trees in secondary and planted forests highlight the need to improve forest conservation and management

Abstract:Large trees are essential for carbon storage and biodiversity conservation. While an increasing number of studies have focused on large trees in primary forests, little is known about them in secondary and planted forests. We surveyed 86,936 trees in secondary forests and 91,294 trees in planted forests in Zhejiang, China, to investigate the distribution patterns and determinants of large trees in these forests. We found a mean density of large trees (DBH ≥ 30 cm) of 15 ± 13 stems ha-1 in secondary forests and 11 ± 9 stems ha-1 in planted forests. Moreover, the mean density of trees with DBH ≥ 60 cm was 0.36 stems ha-1, indicating that large trees are particularly rare in secondary and planted forests. These large trees were primarily occurred in secondary forests that living in high-elevation area with less human exploitation and colder and wetter climates, and in planted forests with higher species richness and lower tree density. In addition, the density of large trees in these forests significantly increased with tree species richness and decreased with increasing tree density. These results indicate that the sparse large trees were the legacy of historical human activities in the studied area, but currently, the development of large trees is still limited by the improper forest structure characterized by low species diversity and high tree density. To better conserve large trees, there is an urgent need for enhanced conservation policies for secondary forests, such as establishing forest parks for forests with large trees, and implementing near-natural forest management practices for planted forests, which include planting mixed native tree species and maintaining moderate tree density.
Is the age of plant communities predicted by the age, stability and soil composition of the underlying landscapes? An investigation of OCBILs

Abstract:Abstract Old, climatically buffered, infertile landscapes (OCBILs) have been hypothesized to harbour an elevated number of persistent plant lineages and are predicted to occur across different parts of the globe, interspersed with other types of landscapes. We tested whether the mean age of a plant community is associated with occurrence on OCBILs, as predicted by climatic stability and poor soil environments. Using digitized occurrence data for seed plants occurring in Australia (7033 species), sub-Saharan Africa (3990 species) and South America (44 482 species), regions that comprise commonly investigated OCBILs (Southwestern Australian Floristic Region, Greater Cape Floristic Region and campos rupestres), and phylogenies pruned to match the species occurrences, we tested for associations between environmental data (current climate, soil composition, elevation and climatic stability) and two novel metrics developed here that capture the age of a community (mean tip length and mean node height). Our results indicate that plant community ages are influenced by a combination of multiple environmental predictors that vary globally; we did not find statistically strong associations between the environments of OCBIL areas and community age, in contrast to the prediction for these landscapes. The Cape Floristic Region was the only OCBIL that showed a significant, although not strong, overlap with old communities.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of forest aging on ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungal community and foraging behavior and their interactions with plant–soil attributes. We explored EcM fungal communities and hyphal exploration types via rDNA sequencing and investigated their associations with plant–soil traits by comparing younger (~120 years) and older (~250 years) temperate forest stands in Northeast China. The results revealed increases in the EcM fungal richness and abundance with forest aging, paralleled by plant–soil feedback shifting from explorative to conservative nutrient use strategies. In the younger stands, Tomentella species were prevalent and showed positive correlations with nutrient availability in both the soil and leaves, alongside rapid increases in woody productivity. However, the older stands were marked by the dominance of the genera Inocybe, Hymenogaster, and Otidea which were significantly and positively correlated with soil nutrient contents and plant structural attributes such as the community-weighted mean height and standing biomass. Notably, the ratios of longer-to-shorter distance EcM fungal exploration types tended to decrease along with forest aging. Our findings underscore the integral role of EcM fungi in the aging processes of temperate forests, highlighting the EcM symbiont-mediated mechanisms adapting to nutrient scarcity and promoting sustainability in plant–soil consortia.

Abstract:One exciting development has been the description of three giant trees in the YTGC region during 2022–2023. Using a combination of space-borne and high-accuracy near-surface drone and backpack lidar, we described a 76.8-m-tall Pinus bhutanica in Medog county, an 83.4-m-tall Abies ernestii var. salouenensis in Zayu county (first identified by K. Guo's team from the Institute of Botany at Chinese Academy of Sciences) and a 102.3-m-tall cypress tree in Bome county (height estimates are previously unpublished). The cypress is likely to be Cupressus austrotibetica ; our estimates put it as the tallest tree known in Asia. Around this cypress, we identified 108 trees with heights that exceed 70 m in a 22.4-ha area of C . austrotibetica forest (Fig. 1a,c). Of the 108 trees, 34 exceeded 85 m in height, and two were above 100 m tall. We estimate that the 102.3-m-tall C . austrotibetica would be aged over 1,000 years, weigh approximately 183 tonnes and contain 100 tonnes of carbon stock. The intricate vertical structure of these giant trees nurtures a diverse assemblage of lichens, ferns, mosses and orchids that, in turn, provides habitat for numerous species of invertebrates and vertebrates. These forests represent a hotspot of giant trees in the world, as well as important additions to the oldest known trees in China 3 .

Abstract:<p>China has a long history of planting ginkgo trees, and there are many large old ginkgo trees in rural and urban areas of China. Those large old ginkgo trees have aesthetic and cultural values and play an important role in regulating landscape and ecological functions. However, the geographical distribution and its determinants of large old ginkgo trees in China are still unexplored. In this study, we first collected from published references the county-level distribution data of ginkgo trees older than 100-year in China. Then we used generalized linear regression and random forest models to analyze the influence of 18 variables representing macroclimate, topography, soil conditions, and intensity of human activity on the occurrence and density of old ginkgo trees. We found that 66,184 old ginkgo trees were distributed in 818 counties of 23 provinces with the county-level average density of 0.11 ± 0.04 trees per km<sup>2</sup>. Old ginkgo trees were mainly distributed east of the Hu Huanyong line where the climate is humid and human population density is high. The probability of occurrence of old ginkgo trees was predominately affected by macroclimate and soil conditions. It significantly decreased with increasing proportion of soil sand content, soil pH, and climate stability, and significantly increased with increasing temperature and precipitation. In contrast, the density of old ginkgo trees was predominately affected by human activity, significantly increasing with human activity intensity (i.e., human population density, gross domestic product, and night-time light intensity). In conclusion, the occurrences of old ginkgo tree were constrained by macroclimate and soil conditions, while their density was mainly driven by human activity.</p>

Abstract:Tree size shapes forest carbon dynamics and determines how trees interact with their environment, including a changing climate. Here, we conduct the first global analysis of among-site differences in how aboveground biomass stocks and fluxes are distributed with tree size. We analyzed repeat tree censuses from 25 large-scale (4-52 ha) forest plots spanning a broad climatic range over five continents to characterize how aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality vary with tree diameter. We examined how the median, dispersion, and skewness of these size-related distributions vary with mean annual temperature and precipitation. In warmer forests, aboveground biomass, woody productivity, and woody mortality were more broadly distributed with respect to tree size. In warmer and wetter forests, aboveground biomass and woody productivity were more right skewed, with a long tail towards large trees. Small trees (1-10 cm diameter) contributed more to productivity and mortality than to biomass, highlighting the importance of including these trees in analyses of forest dynamics. Our findings provide an improved characterization of climate-driven forest differences in the size structure of aboveground biomass and dynamics of that biomass, as well as refined benchmarks for capturing climate influences in vegetation demographic models.
First Mapping the Canopy Height of Primeval Forests in the Tallest Tree Area of Asia

Abstract:We have developed the world's first canopy height map of the distribution area of world-level giant trees. This mapping is crucial for discovering more individual and community world-level giant trees, and for analyzing and quantifying the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation measures in the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon (YTGC) National Nature Reserve. We proposed a method to map the canopy height of the primeval forest within the world-level giant tree distribution area by using a spaceborne LiDAR fusion satellite imagery (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI), ICESat-2, and Sentinel-2) driven deep learning modeling. And we customized a pyramid receptive fields depth separable CNN (PRFXception). PRFXception, a CNN architecture specifically customized for mapping primeval forest canopy height to infer the canopy height at the footprint level of GEDI and ICESat-2 from Sentinel-2 optical imagery with a 10-meter spatial resolution. We conducted a field survey of 227 permanent plots using a stratified sampling method and measured several giant trees using UAV-LS. The predicted canopy height was compared with ICESat-2 and GEDI validation data (RMSE =7.56 m, MAE=6.07 m, ME=-0.98 m, R^2=0.58 m), UAV-LS point clouds (RMSE =5.75 m, MAE =3.72 m, ME = 0.82 m, R^2= 0.65 m), and ground survey data (RMSE = 6.75 m, MAE = 5.56 m, ME= 2.14 m, R^2=0.60 m). We mapped the potential distribution map of world-level giant trees and discovered two previously undetected giant tree communities with an 89% probability of having trees 80-100 m tall, potentially taller than Asia's tallest tree. This paper provides scientific evidence confirming southeastern Tibet--northwestern Yunnan as the fourth global distribution center of world-level giant trees initiatives and promoting the inclusion of the YTGC giant tree distribution area within the scope of China's national park conservation.
