Abstract:We investigate the two-photon correlation function in the dissipative anisotropic quantum Rabi model in the framework of quantum dressed master equation. Multiple antibunching-to-bunching transitions are generally exhibited at the deep strong qubit-photon coupling. The emerged additional photon antibunching feature is however lacking in the dissipative isotropic quantum Rabi model. Importantly, the observed two-photon statistics can be well described analytically within a few lowest eigenstates at low temperatures. It is revealed that the additional photon antibunching effect is mainly originated from the selection rule of the two-photon correlation measurement induced eigenstate transitions and the enlarged energy gap of the first two eigenstates after the level crossings. Moreover, we unravel the implication of the photon bunching behavior with the first-order quantum phase transition. We hope these results may fertilize the analysis of the nonclassical photon radiation in the anisotropic qubit-photon hybrid systems.

From perspectives of both numerical and analytical analysis, we unravel the implication of the giant photon-bunching feature on the first-order quantum phase transition. The observed two-photon statistics can be well described analytically within a few lowest eigenstates at the low temperature. Moreover, such significant photon-bunching peak is generally exhibited at the deep-strong qubit-photon coupling, which is however lacking in the dissipative isotropic quantum Rabi model. Therefore, we suggest that the photon-bunching measurement is helpful to characterize the first-order QPT of the qubit-photon hybrid systems.
Quantum Phase Transition of Light in the Dissipative Rabi-Hubbard Lattice: A Dressed-Master-equation Perspective

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the quantum phase transition of light in the dissipative Rabi-Hubbard lattice under the framework of the mean-field theory and quantum dressed master equation. The order parameter of photons in strong qubit-photon coupling regime is derived analytically both at zero and low temperatures. Interestingly, we can locate the localization and delocalization phase transition very well in a wide parameter region. In particular for the zero-temperature limit, the critical tunneling strength approaches zero generally in the deep-strong qubit-photon coupling regime, regardless of the quantum dissipation. This is contrary to the previous results with the finite minimal critical tunneling strength based on the standard Lindblad master equation. Moreover, a significant improvement of the critical tunneling is also observed at finite temperature, compared with the counterpart under the Lindblad description. We hope these results may deepen the understanding of the phase transition of photons in the Rabi-Hubbard model.
Multiple Ground-State Instabilities in the Anisotropic Quantum Rabi Model

Abstract:In this work, the anisotropic quantum Rabi model with different coupling strengths of the rotating-wave and counter-rotating wave terms is studied by using two kinds of extended coherent states (ECS). By the first kind of ECS, we can derive a so-called G-function, by which both the regular and exceptional solutions can be given. The exceptional solution are just corresponding to the crossing points of two energy levels with different parities, so is doubly degenerate. By the second kind of ECS, a general scheme for the eigensolutions is derived analytically in a unified way. The zero-order approximation is just the adiabatic approximation, and the first-order approximation is actually a generalized rotating-wave approximation. The algebraic formulae for the eigensolutions are given explicitly in two approximations. The generalized rotating-wave approximations work well in a wide range of two different coupling strengths and the qubit detunings.
Generalized Quantum Rabi Model with Both One- and Two-Photon Terms: A Concise Analytical Study

Abstract:A generalized quantum Rabi Hamiltonian with both one- and two-photon terms has emerged in the circuit quantum electrodynamics system for a decade. The usual parity symmetry is broken naturally in the simultaneous presence of both couplings, which complicates analytical treatments, even in the rotating wave approximations. In this paper, we propose an adiabatic approximation to this generic model by using Bogoliubov operators, and obtain a very concise analytical solution for both eigenvalues and eigenstates. Although the adiabatic approximation is only exact in the vanishing limit of the qubit frequency, the results for some physical observables nevertheless agree well with the numerical ones in a wide parameter regime. In the rotating-wave approximations, we also derive an analytical eigensolution. Two dominant Rabi frequencies are found in the Rabi oscillations of this generalized model. We also apply the present analytical theory to the vacuum Rabi splitting. It is found that some new phenomena emerge just because of the presence of the additional two-photon coupling term.

Abstract:The interplay of three light-matter interaction processes - rotating and counter-rotating interactions and two-photon relaxation of the light field - is a topic of interest in quantum optics and quantum information processing. In this work, we theoretically investigate the three light-matter interaction processes using the anisotropic Rabi model, which accounts for different strengths of rotating and counter-rotating interactions and the unique occurrence of photon escape exclusively in pairs. By numerically solving the Lindblad master equation, we analyze the excitation-relaxation dynamics and derive a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian to gain further physical insights. To explore the individual effects of these interactions, we examine three analytically tractable limits of the effective Hamiltonian. Our analysis reveals that the three competitive light-matter interaction processes exhibit sensitivity to parity, leading to intriguing phenomena in both transient and steady states. Particularly interesting dynamical patterns resembling quantum phase transitions emerge when these three interaction terms compete. This work deepens the understanding of ultrastrong light-matter interaction in open quantum systems and offers valuable insights into cavity-based quantum computations.

Abstract:We study the system of a single qubit couples to a single mode thermal field according to a multi-photon Jaynes-Cummings-type interaction with phase decoherence. Both the time evolving entanglement and the stationary state entanglement are calculated by adopting the log-negativity as a measure. It is found that the multi-photon process can enhance the stationary state entanglement of this system and can enlarge the range of the parameter, Delta/g and the mean photon number of initial thermal field in which the stationary state is distillable.

Abstract:In the photon-atom interaction, one of the most interesting phenomena can be collapse-revival effect in population inversion of atomic levels. Since a single-photon-transition Jaynes-Cummings model can be generalized to a multiphoton-transition Jaynes-Cummings model, of which the Hamiltonian can exhibit a supersymmetric Lie algebra structure, in this paper, quantum collapse and revival in atomic population inversion, which is a collaborative effect of a variety of quantum Rabi oscillations with various quantum Rabi frequencies, is studied for the supersymmetric multiphoton-transition Jaynes-Cummings model. In the literature, it has been pointed out that quantum collapse and revival might find an application in qubit design. We expect that a supersymmetric two-level system might serve as such a kind of qubits. Compared with ordinary two-level qubits, more information could be stored in the basis vectors of supersymmetric qubits, and this could increase the degrees of freedom of tensor product (multi-component extension) of basis vectors of this multiphoton-atom interacting system. For this reason, some characteristics of the collapse-revival effect driven by ordinary coherent states and Yurke-Stoler coherent states will be addressed in this paper. The influence of various characteristic parameters of this supersymmetric Jaynes-Cummings model and the quantized optical fields on the quantum collapse and revival in the population inversion will be indicated in some numerical illustrative examples.
Photon antibunching in a cavity-QED system with two Rydberg-Rydberg interaction atoms

Abstract:We propose how to achieve strong photon antibunching effect in a cavity-QED system coupled with two Rydberg-Rydberg interaction atoms. Via calculating the equal time second order correlation function g(2)(0), we find that the unconventional photon blockade and the conventional photon blockade appear in the atom-driven scheme, and they are both significantly affected by the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction. We also find that under appropriate parameters, the photon antibunching and the mean photon number can be significantly enhanced by combining the conventional photon blockade and the unconventional photon blockade. In the cavity-driven scheme, the existence of the Rydberg-Rydberg interaction severely destroys the photon antibunching under the unconventional photon blockade mechanism. These results will help to guide the implementation of the single photon emitter in the Rydberg atoms-cavity system.

Strong antibunching in a generalized Rabi model

Abstract:We consider a generalized version of the Rabi model that includes a nonlinear, dispersive-type atom-field interaction in addition to the usual linear dipole coupling, as well as cavity dissipation. An effective system of this sort arises, for example, in a quantum simulation of the Rabi model based upon Raman transitions in an optical cavity QED setting [A. L. Grimsmo and S. Parkins, Phys. Rev. A {\bf87}, 033814 (2013)]. For a suitable choice of the nonlinear interaction strength, near degeneracies of the states in the cavity-mode vacuum and single-photon subspaces, in combination with cavity loss, gives rise to an essentially closed cycle of excitations and photon emissions within these subspaces. Consequently, the cavity output field is strongly antibunched. We develop a quantum-trajectory-based description of the system that models its key properties very well, and use a simple dressed-state picture to explain the novel structure of the cavity fluorescence spectrum. We also present numerical results for a potential realization of the system using a rubidium atom coupled strongly to a high-finesse optical cavity mode.

Abstract:Fifty years ago, Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) discovered photon bunching in light emitted by a chaotic source, highlighting the importance of two-photon correlations and stimulating the development of modern quantum optics . The quantum interpretation of bunching relies upon the constructive interference between amplitudes involving two indistinguishable photons, and its additive character is intimately linked to the Bose nature of photons. Advances in atom cooling and detection have led to the observation and full characterisation of the atomic analogue of the HBT effect with bosonic atoms. By contrast, fermions should reveal an antibunching effect, i.e., a tendency to avoid each other. Antibunching of fermions is associated with destructive two-particle interference and is related to the Pauli principle forbidding more than one identical fermion to occupy the same quantum state. Here we report an experimental comparison of the fermion and the boson HBT effects realised in the same apparatus with two different isotopes of helium, 3He (a fermion) and 4He (a boson). Ordinary attractive or repulsive interactions between atoms are negligible, and the contrasting bunching and antibunching behaviours can be fully attributed to the different quantum statistics. Our result shows how atom-atom correlation measurements can be used not only for revealing details in the spatial density, or momentum correlations in an atomic ensemble, but also to directly observe phase effects linked to the quantum statistics in a many body system. It may thus find applications to study more exotic situations >.

Abstract:The quantum statistics of particles is determined by both the spins and the indistinguishability of quantum states. Here we study the quantum statistics of partially distinguishable photons by defining the multiphoton indistinguishability. The photon-bunching coefficient is formulated based on the properties of permutation symmetry and a modified Bose-Einstein statistics is presented with an indistinguishability-induced photon-bunching effect. Moreover, the statistical transition of the photon state is studied for partially distinguishable photons and the results show that the indistinguishability exhibits the same role as that observed in the generation of laser. The results will fill the gap between Bose-Einstein and Poisson statistics for photons and a formula is presented for the study of multiphoton quantum information processes.
Antibunching Photons in a Cavity Coupled to an Optomechanical System

Abstract:We study the photon statistics of a cavity linearly coupled to an optomechanical system via second-order correlation functions. Our calculations show that the cavity can exhibit strong photon antibunching even when optomechanical interaction in the optomechanical system is weak. The cooperation between the weak optomechanical interaction and the destructive interference between different paths for two-photon excitation leads to the efficient antibunching effect. Compared with the standard optomechanical system, the coupling between a cavity and an optomechanical system provides a method to relax the constraints to obtain a single photon by optomechanical interaction.

Abstract:Using the properties of the q-deformed boson creation and annihilation operators and their inversed operators, two kind of q-deformed pair coherent states are introduced. Antibunching effects and correlation properties between two modes in the states are investigated. It is shown that q-deformed pair coherent states exhibit antibunching effects and the photons of the two modes are correlated. These nonclassical effects are influenced by the parameter q. These effects increase when ｜lnq｜ increases.

Correlated Photons and Collective Excitations of a Cyclic Atomic Ensemble

Abstract:We systematically study the interaction between two quantized optical fields and a cyclic atomic ensemble driven by a classic optical field. This so-called atomic cyclic ensemble consists of three-level atoms with Delta-type transitions due to the symmetry breaking, which can also be implemented in the superconducting quantum circuit by Yu-xi Liu [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 087001 (2005)]. We explore the dynamic mechanisms to creating the quantum entanglements among photon states, and between photons and atomic collective excitations by the coherent manipulation of the atom-photon system. It is shown that the quantum information can be completely transferred from one quantized optical mode to another, and the quantum information carried by the two quantized optical fields can be stored in the collective modes of this atomic ensemble by adiabatically controlling the classic field Rabi frequencies.
Anomalous bunching of nearly indistinguishable bosons

Abstract:The commonly assumed straight link between boson bunching and particle indistinguishability in quantum interferometry has recently been challenged [Nat. Photon. 17, 702 (2023)]. Exploiting the connection between quantum optical interferences and matrix permanents, it appeared that bunching effects may arise that exceed the expected limit of fully indistinguishable particles by injecting peculiar polarization states of partially distinguishable photons in some interferometers. Surprisingly, all states giving rise to such an anomalous bunching were found to be far from the state of fully indistinguishable particles, raising the question of whether this intriguing phenomenon might even possibly exist with nearly indistinguishable particles. Here, we answer this question positively by relating it to a mathematical conjecture on matrix permanents dating from 1986, whose physical interpretation had not yet been unveiled. Using a recently found counterexample to this conjecture, we demonstrate that there is an optical interferometer involving 8 photons in 10 modes such that the probability that all photons bunch into two output modes can be enhanced by suitably perturbing the state of all photons having the same polarization. Such a finding reflects still another -- even less expected -- facet of anomalous boson bunching.

Abstract:We study topological properties of bound pairs of photons in spatially-modulated qubit arrays (arrays of two-level atoms) coupled to a waveguide. While bound pairs behave like Bloch waves, they are topologically nontrivial in the parameter space formed by the center-of-mass momentum and the modulation phase, where the latter plays the role of a synthetic dimension. In a superlattice where each unit cell contains three two-level atoms (qubits), we calculate the Chern numbers for the bound-state photon bands, which are found to be $(1,-2,1)$. For open boundary condition, we find exotic topological bound-pair edge states with radiative losses. Unlike the conventional case of the bulk-edge correspondence, these novel edge modes not only exist in gaps separating the bound-pair bands, but they also may merge with and penetrate into the bands. By joining two structures with different spatial modulations, we find long-lived interface states which may have applications in storage and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Bosonic bunching is a term used to describe the well-known tendency of bosons to bunch together, and which differentiates their behaviour from that of fermions or classical particles. However, in some situations perfectly indistinguishable bosons may counter-intuitively bunch less than classical, distinguishable particles. Here we report two such counter-intuitive multiphoton bunching effects observed with three photons in a three-mode balanced photonic Fourier interferometer. In this setting, we show indistinguishable photons actually minimize the probability of bunching. We also show that any non-trivial value of the three-photon collective photonic phase leads to a decreased probability of all photons ending up in the same mode, even as we increase pairwise indistinguishability. Our experiments feature engineering of partial indistinguishability scenarios using both the time and the polarization photonic degrees of freedom, and a polarization-transparent 8-mode tunable interferometer with a quantum-dot source of single photons. Besides the foundational understanding, the observation of these counter-intuitive phenomena open news perspective in devising more efficient ways of routing photons for advantage in metrology and quantum computation.

Abstract:We study the emission spectra of dissipative Rabi and Jaynes-Cummings models in the non-Markovian and ultrastrong coupling regimes. We have derived a polaron-transformed Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation (PTNZE) to calculate the emission spectra, which eliminates the well known limitations of the Markovian approximation and the standard second-order perturbation. Using the time-dependent variational approach as benchmark, the PTNZE is found to yield accurate emission spectra in certain ultrastrong coupling regimes where the standard second-order Nakajima-Zwanzig master equation breaks down. It is shown that the emission spectra of the dissipative Rabi and Jaynes-Cummings models are in general asymmetric under various initial conditions. Direct comparisons of spectra for the two models illustrate the essential role of the qubit-cavity counter-rotating term and the spectra features under different qubit-cavity coupling strengths and system initial conditions.
