Abstract:The fourth Ecology of Soil Microorganisms (ESM4) conference was held in Prague, Czech Republic in June 2022 as one of the very first microbiology meetings after the COVID pandemic. About 200 scientists gathered for a 5 day meeting in Prague. With 63 long and 43 short talks and one hundred posters the scientific community was kept busy from 9 am to 6 pm. The time of the COVID pandemic was difficult for science and probably everyone agrees that online meetings cannot replace the possibility to meet face to face. Although the post-pandemic time resulted in a lower number of participants (in the time of registration, it was not yet fully sure what exact hygiene measures would be needed), the enthusiasm of all participants that met after a long time of online only contacts was really high.

Abstract:Terraced landscapes are all over the world. They are the tangible evidence of how food production, rural activities and human life can express itself in the steepest slopes of mountain areas in the world. Despite the multi-disciplinary values that terraced landscapes represent, they were scarcely appreciated in the past decades. Indeed the interest in their wise management and broader understanding has been constantly growing since the end of the past century. Some outstanding terraced landscapes have been recognized at international level for their importance in the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, many other terraced landscapes in the world are abandoned or facing the same risks of collapse, trivialization or destructive urbanization, losing both their valuable environmental function and their intangible knowledge and heritage. The volume collects the best scientific contributions presented in the 3rd World Conference on Terraced Landscapes held in Italy from 6th to 15th October 2016, for the first time offering a deep and multifaceted insight into the geographic distribution and the remarkable heritage of terraced landscapes in Europe and in the world. The manifest “Terraced Landscapes: Choosing the Future” signed in Padova in 2016 by all members of the International Terraced Landscapes Alliance aims to stimulate their renaissance as a model for sustainable development.

Abstract:The Symposium on Modern Ecology Series is an international symposium which is jointly launched by Chinese ecologists at home and abroad with the aim to strengthen exchange and collaboration in new theory, new perspectives, new methods and hot topics of modern ecology. This paper summarizes all the twenty-five presentations of the 5 th International Symposium on Modern Ecology Series held in Lanzhou University during June 27 -29 of 2009. The summary is briefly made from the perspectives of forest ecology, grassland ecology, global change ecology, rhizosphere and soil ecology, molecular and behavior ecology and agricultural ecology in the theme of "macroscopic ecology and sustainable science". AU the topics can be concluded into two big fundamental theoretical questions, i. e. material basis of ecosystem service function and ecological mechanism of ecosystem service. And the approaches to solve the questions must be explored under the framework of coupled human and natural ecosystem. In the meantime, some suggestions are proposed towards future improvement of the series.

Abstract:The 4th Atlas Georesources International Congress (AGIC), convened in Hammamet, Tunisia in March 2023, provided a significant forum for scholars, scientists, and practitioners to converge and deliberate on the intricate challenges surrounding resource management. Themed "Geoscience Innovations For Resource Management: Socio-Economic Challenges In An Environmentally Constrained World," the congress spotlighted five pivotal domains: hydrology and water resource management, applied geophysics in geological exploration and structural analysis, environmental pollution, climate and atmospheric studies, and renewable energy and climate modeling. Abstract:Forest ecosystems are of global importance, ecologically, economically and culturally. However, despite their fundamental role in mitigating the worst effects of climate change, to date there have been surprisingly few resources devoted to defining, conserving and planning resilient forests for the future. Progress in this field of research, which requires international and interdisciplinary cooperation, collaboration and communication, was presented and discussed at the second biannual conference of the European Research Group, Evoltree (https://www.evoltree.eu). Over four days more than 140 scientists met to share developments and to discuss forest ecology, genetics, genomics and evolution with a focus on realising "Resilient Forests for the Future". From examining evolutionary dynamics and using the past to understand future responses, to evaluating breeding approaches and the sustainable use of forest genetic resources, the conference addressed critical themes with relevance to this topic. The role of genomics in conservation, investigation of biotic interactions and identifying climate resilient forests were also explored. Finally, innovative methods and approaches which promise to increase the scale and speed with which forest evolutionary research can progress were introduced and evaluated. The Evoltree network and conference series provides invaluable opportunities to share knowledge and increase collaboration on forest genetic research, the need for which has never been greater or more urgent.

If it has been a while since you asked such questions, then this book [5] is an invitation to do so now – to encourage us to reflect on how we, as individuals and a community, do ecology, what it is we are trying to achieve, and how we might be doing it more effectively.

Abstract:This study describes the evaluation of an assessment and treatment unit for people with learning disabilities. Results showed the main reasons for admission for the 48 people admitted to the unit were because of challenging behaviours and mental health problems. Valid and reliable scales were used to measure the behaviours and mental health problems of those admitted across three-time periods: pre-admission, during admission and post-admission. The analysis found significant reductions in challenging behaviours and mental health problems following admission to the unit. The unit was staffed by a multidisciplinary team with nurses making up the largest group of staff. A number of issues of concern are discussed including access to mental health services for people with learning disabilities, the need for robust community services and areas that require further research. In conclusion, the study found evidence supporting the value of the unit and how it may lessen distress in learning disabled people who are behaviourally disturbed. It is suggested that nurses played a key role in the unit but they need to make the support and caring they provide more visible. Nurses need to harness and make explicit the caring they provide for people with learning disabilities.

Abstract:The Second Autumn Course on Mathematical Ecology was held at the Intern ational Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy in November and December of 1986. During the four year period that had elapsed since the First Autumn Course on Mathematical Ecology, sufficient progress had been made in applied mathemat ical ecology to merit tilting the balance maintained between theoretical aspects and applications in the 1982 Course toward applications. The course format, while similar to that of the first Autumn Course on Mathematical Ecology, consequently focused upon applications of mathematical ecology. Current areas of application are almost as diverse as the spectrum covered by ecology. The topiys of this book reflect this diversity and were chosen because of perceived interest and utility to developing countries. Topical lectures began with foundational material mostly derived from Math ematical Ecology: An Introduction (a compilation of the lectures of the 1982 course published by Springer-Verlag in this series, Volume 17) and, when possible, progressed to the frontiers of research. In addition to the course lectures, workshops were arranged for small groups to supplement and enhance the learning experience. Other perspectives were provided through presentations by course participants and speakers at the associated Research Conference. Many of the research papers are in a companion volume, Mathematical Ecology: Proceedings Trieste 1986, published by World Scientific Press in 1988. This book is structured primarily by application area. Part II provides an introduction to mathematical and statistical applications in resource management.

Abstract:New technologies for acquiring biological information such as eDNA, acoustic or optical sensors, make it possible to generate spatial community observations at unprecedented scales. The potential of these novel community data to standardize community observations at high spatial, temporal, and taxonomic resolution and at large spatial scale ('many rows and many columns') has been widely discussed, but so far, there has been little integration of these data with ecological models and theory. Here, we review these developments and highlight emerging solutions, focusing on statistical methods for analyzing novel community data, in particular joint species distribution models; the new ecological questions that can be answered with these data; and the potential implications of these developments for policy and conservation.

Abstract:This is a special issue dedicated mostly to the best studies on waste management presented at the 17 th International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology (CEST) that took place on Rhodes Island, Greece, in September 2019. During this biennial international environmental conference established in 1989, top experts, scientists, entrepreneurs, representatives of public administration and social initiatives present state-of-the-art research on current and emerging environmental issues. CEST is thus a platform where academia and business converge; where academic research, innovative ideas and solutions serve as the basis for providing a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment. The papers presented in the conference involved research conducted between 2018 and early 2019. However, since then, the European Commission has published the European Green Deal communication that sets out policy initiatives aiming to help the European Union (EU) achieve its 2050 climate neutrality goal. With the proposed Green New Deal, the United States of America (USA) is bound to implement a similar path. This is a gigantic pulse that produces waves of strategic planning and legislation that will greatly affect resources management and waste valorisation in the EU, the USA and around the world.

Abstract:Sustainable interdisciplinarity focuses on human–nature relations and a multitude of contemporary overlapping research between society and the environment. A variety of disciplines have played a large part in better understanding sustainable development since its high-profile emergence approximately a quarter century ago. At present, the forefront of sustainability research is an array of methods, techniques, and growing knowledge-base that considers past, present, and future pathways. Specific multi-disciplinary concentrations within the scope of societal changes, urban landscape transformations, international environmental comparative studies as well as key theories and dynamics relating to sustainable performance are explored. Specializations in complex sustainability issues address international governance arrangements, rules, and organizations—both public and private—within the scope of four themes: sustainability, human geography, environment, and interdisciplinary societal studies. This book contains eleven thoroughly refereed contributions concerning pressing issues that interlink sustainable interdisciplinarity with the presented themes in respect of the human–nature interface.

Here, highlights of the contributions to the 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology are presented. The 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology was held in Nancy, France on June 12–16, 2023. The main goals of the conference were to create a platform for the exchange of ideas and experiences and to promote scientific dialogue among scientists from numerous fields who share expertise in the study of ultramafic habitats worldwide. The proceedings of the conference are being published as two Special Issues of Ecological Research, of which this is the second. In this article, we present the major topics and provide some highlights of the contributions to the 10th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology.

Abstract:2024 3rd International Conference on Biochemical Engineering and Environmentally Friendly Material (BEEFM 2024) was successfully held online during April 20-21, 2024 in Budapest, Hungary. The conference invited scholars and experts in the fields of chemistry, biology, environmental engineering and materials application from various universities and institutes, to participate in the review and guidance of this conference. The conference focuses on the latest research fields, and provides an international cooperation and exchange platform for experts, scholars, and business managers in these fields. The aim of BEEFM 2024 is to share the research achievements, discuss the key challenges and research directions of the development, and jointly promote the industrialization cooperation and continuous innovation of international academic achievements. This collection of proceedings compiles oral and paper presentations submitted by the authors and scrutinized by the special committee. The opening ceremony was held in the main session and a speech was delivered by the invited speaker. After the main session, we divided the participants into three sub-sessions. Each author spoke for about 15-20 minutes on detailed material in the slides, with the same amount of time set aside for questions and discussion. The format of questioning and discussion was that after each author's introduction, the conference chairman and committee members asked and answered questions. At least one attendee could ask questions that will be answered by the speaker. BEEFM 2024 had brought together many excellent works, latest ideas, and concepts. New ideas have been provided in the fields of chemistry, biology, environmental engineering, and materials application. Look forward to meeting again next year. Abstract:This paper is the outcome of the 1st Summer School on Geomorphology, Ecology, and Marine Biology in insular environments, focused on the advanced and multidisciplinary methods for the scientific investigation of marine coastal areas. It was held at Tremiti Islands, a significant laboratory for geomorphological, biological, and ecological studies because of its dynamic interaction between geodiversity and biodiversity, which makes it an ideal place for scientific research and geotourism. Landscape information was collected during field trips, while practical activities were finalized to sampling sediments and data collection of hard bottom assemblages. The map is the result of a multidisciplinary analysis incorporating geomorphological field observations and advanced methods applicable for ecological and environmental research, supported by scientific diving. This work represents a useful tool for the dissemination of environmental knowledge of the area and for understanding the relationships between landscape and natural heritage through modern and environmentally aware tourism.
