Abstract:Several aspects of classical and quantum mechanics applied to a class of strongly chaotic systems are studied. The latter consists of single particles moving without external forces on surfaces of constant negative Gaussian curvature whose corresponding fundamental groups are supplied with an arithmetic structure. It is shown that the arithmetical features of the considered systems lead to exceptional properties of the corresponding spectra of lengths of closed geodesics (periodic orbits). The most significant one is an exponential growth of degeneracies in these geodesic length spectra. Furthermore, the arithmetical systems are distinguished by a structure that appears as a generalization of geometric symmetries. These pseudosymmetries occur in the quantization of the classical arithmetic systems as Hecke operators, which form an infinite algebra of self-adjoint operators commuting with the Hamiltonian. The statistical properties of quantum energies in the arithmetical systems have previously been identified as exceptional. They do not fit into the general scheme of random matrix theory. It is shown with the help of a simplified model for the spectral form factor how the spectral statistics in arithmetical quantum chaos can be understood by the properties of the corresponding classical geodesic length spectra. A decisive role is played by the exponentially increasing multiplicities of lengths. The model developed for the level spacings distribution and for the number variance is compared to the corresponding quantities obtained from quantum energies for a specific arithmetical system. Finally, the convergence properties of a representation for the Selberg zeta function as a Dirichlet series are studied. It turns out that the exceptional classical and quantum mechanical properties shared by the arithmetical systems prohibit a convergence of this important function in the physically interesting domain.

Abstract:We undertake a thorough investigation into the phenomenology of quantum eigenstates, in the three-particle Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model. Employing different Husimi functions, our study focuses on both the α -type, which is canonically equivalent to the celebrated Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian, a nonintegrable and mixed-type system, and the general case at the saddle energy where the system is fully chaotic. Based on Husimi quantum surface of sections, we find that in the mixed-type system, the fraction of mixed eigenstates in an energy shell [E−δE/2,E+δE/2] with δE≪E shows a power-law decay with respect to the decreasing Planck constant ħ . Defining the localization measures in terms of the Rényi-Wehrl entropy, in both the mixed-type and fully chaotic systems, we find a better fit with the β distribution and a lesser degree of localization, in the distribution of localization measures of chaotic eigenstates, as the controlling ratio αL=tH/tT between the Heisenberg time tH and the classical transport time tT increases. This transition with respect to αL and the power-law decay of the mixed states, together provide supporting evidence for the principle of uniform semiclassical condensation in the semiclassical limit. Moreover, we find that in the general case which is fully chaotic, the maximally localized state, is influenced by the stable and unstable manifold of the saddles (hyperbolic fixed points), while the maximally extended state notably avoids these points, extending across the remaining space, complementing each other. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.054211 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:A simple semiclassical Hénon-Heiles model is constructed based on Dirac's time-dependent variational principle. We obtain an effective semiclassical Hamiltonian using a Hatree-type two-body trial wavefunction in the Jackiw-Kerman form. Numerical results show that quantum effects can in fact induce chaos in the non-chaotic regions of the classical Hénon-Heiles model.

Abstract:Using the quasi-normal modes frequency of extremal Reissner-Nordström black holes, we obtain area spectrum for these type of black holes. We show that the area and entropy black hole horizon are equally spaced. Our results for the spacing of the area spectrum differ from that of schwarzschild black holes.

Abstract:The classical Hamiltonian for which the dynamics is represented by trajectories in a multidimensional phase (coset) space is quantized via Lyapunov analysis. A system of one electron in four sites and the vibration of H2O with Fermi resonance is studied. The quantization condition is that the average Lyapunov exponents show local minima as a function of the classical energy. This means that it requests the least global chaoticity. This quantization algorithm leads to results consistent with those obtained by the quantal models.

Abstract:International Journal of Quantum Information, Ahead of Print. This paper investigates the regularity properties of quantum master equations with unbounded coefficients within the space of square-integrable complex-valued Bernoulli functionals. Initially, we demonstrate the existence of a unique regular solution to the linear stochastic Schrödinger equation driven by cylindrical Brownian motions. Subsequently, we establish the existence of regular solutions for the autonomous linear quantum master equation and provide a probabilistic representation of this solution in terms of the stochastic Schrödinger equation. Finally, by taking the expectation of some observables with respect to the solution of the quantum master equation, we derive a system of differential equations that describe the evolution of the mean values of certain quantum observables.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the semiclassical limit of a simple bosonic quantum many-body system exhibiting both integrable and chaotic behavior. A classical Hamiltonian is derived using coherent states. The transition from regularity to chaos in classical dynamics is visualized through Poincaré sections. Classical trajectories in phase space closely resemble the projections of the Husimi functions of eigenstates with similar energy, even in chaotic cases. It is demonstrated that this correlation is more evident when projecting the eigenstates onto the Fock states. The analysis is carried out at a critical energy where the eigenstates are maximally delocalized in the Fock basis. Despite the imperfect delocalization, its influence is present in the classical and quantum properties under investigation. The study systematically establishes quantum-classical correspondence for a bosonic many-body system with more than two wells, even within the chaotic region.

Abstract:In this paper we study two quantum mechanical systems on punctured surfaces modeled by hyperbolic spaces, namely the cases of the singly punctured two-torus and triply punctured two-sphere. We study the systems using their Maass waveforms in connection with the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. The energy eigenfunctions on such surfaces are precisely the eigenfunctions of the hyperbolic Laplacian satisfying $\Gamma $($2)$-automorphicity for the triply punctured sphere and $\Gamma ^{\prime}$-automorphicity for singly punctured torus. We introduce the algorithm of numerically computing the Maass cusp forms on these two surfaces and report on the (preliminary) computational results of the lower-lying eigenvalues for each odd and even Maass cusp forms on both surfaces.

Abstract:Within the de Broglie-Bohm theory, we numerically study a generic two-dimensional anharmonic oscillator including cubic and quartic interactions. Our analysis of the quantum velocity fields and trajectories reveals the emergence of dynamical vortices. In their vicinity, fingerprints of chaotic behavior such as unpredictability and sensitivity to initial conditions are detected. The simultaneous presence of off-diagonal and nonlinear terms leads to robust quantum chaos very analogous to its classical version.

Quantum master equation from the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis

Abstract:We use the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis to derive a quantum master equation for a system weakly coupled to a chaotic finite-sized bath prepared in a pure state. We show that the emergence of Markovianity is controlled by the spectral function of the ETH and that local detailed balance emerges in the Markovian regime for a broad class of pure bath states. We numerically verify this result by comparing the master equation to dynamics computed using exact diagonalization of a chaotic Hamiltonian. We also compare the master equation to exact dynamics for an integrable bath and find that at finite size they strongly disagree. Our work puts forward eigenstate thermalization as a foundation for open quantum systems theory, thus extending it beyond ensemble bath preparations to chaotic many-body environments in generic pure states.

Abstract:We discuss general aspects of non-relativistic quantum chaos theory of scattering of a quantum particle on a system of a large number of naked singularities. We define such a system space-temporal Sinai billiard We dis- cuss the problem in semiclassical approach. We show that in semiclassical regime the formation of trapped periodic semiclassical orbits inside the sys- tem is unavoidable. This leads to general expression of survival probabilities and scattering time delays, expanded to the chaotic Pollicott-Ruelle reso- nances. Finally, we comment on possible generalizations of these aspects to relativistic quantum field theory.

Abstract:We numerically study the work distributions in a chaotic system and examine the relationship between quantum work and classical work. Our numerical results suggest that there exists a correspondence principle between quantum and classical work distributions in a chaotic system. This correspondence was proved for one-dimensional (1D) integrable systems in a recent work [Jarzynski, Quan, and Rahav, Phys. Rev. X 5, 031038 (2015)]. Our investigation further justifies the definition of quantum work via two point energy measurements.

Abstract:The quantum three-rotor problem concerns the dynamics of three equally massive particles moving on a circle subject to pairwise attractive cosine potentials and can model coupled Josephson junctions. Classically, it displays order-chaos-order behavior with increasing energy. The quantum system admits a dimensionless coupling with semiclassical behavior at strong coupling. We study stationary states with periodic `relative' wave functions. Perturbative and harmonic approximations capture the spectrum at weak coupling and that of low-lying states at strong coupling. More generally, the cumulative distribution of energy levels obtained by numerical diagonalization is well-described by a Weyl-like semiclassical estimate. However, the system has an $S_3 \times \mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry that is obscured when working with relative angles. By exploiting a basis for invariant states, we obtain the purified spectrum in the identity representation. To uncover universal quantum hallmarks of chaos, we partition the spectrum into energy windows where the classical motion is regular, mixed or chaotic and unfold each separately. At strong coupling, we find striking signatures of transitions between regularity and chaos: spacing distributions morph from Poisson to Wigner-Dyson while the number variance shifts from linear to logarithmic behavior at small lengths. Some nonuniversal features are also examined. For instance, the number variance saturates and oscillates at large lengths for strong coupling while deviations from Poisson spacings at asymptotically low and high energies are well-explained by purified quantum harmonic and free-rotor spectra at strong and weak coupling. Interestingly, the degeneracy of free-rotor levels admits an elegant formula that we deduce using properties of Eisenstein primes.

Abstract:We investigate the quantum chaos of ultracold atoms in a quadruple-well potential, emphasizing the influence of synthetic gauge fields and many-body atomic interactions on the transitions from regular behavior to quantum chaos. We compare the metrics that the eigenvalue statistics of nearest-neighbor spacings distribution and gap ratio analysis, and the eigenfunction statistics using the Kullback–Leibler divergence and the inverse participation ratio, to diagnose the transition from regular to chaotic behavior. Numerically, we obtain the phase diagram of the regular and chaotic behavior on the parameter plane of many-body atomic interactions and synthetic gauge fields. Our results provide insight into the chaotic behavior of ultracold atoms with synthetic gauge fields and have potential applications in the quantum engineering of wave chaos.

Abstract:We continue the study of random matrix universality in two-dimensional conformal field theories. This is facilitated by expanding the spectral form factor in a basis of modular invariant eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the fundamental domain. The focus of this paper is on the discrete part of the spectrum, which consists of the Maass cusp forms. Both their eigenvalues and Fourier coefficients are sporadic discrete numbers with interesting statistical properties and relations to analytic number theory; this is referred to as `arithmetic chaos'. We show that the near-extremal spectral form factor at late times is only sensitive to a statistical average over these erratic features. Nevertheless, complete information about their statistical distributions is encoded in the spectral form factor if all its spin sectors exhibit universal random matrix eigenvalue repulsion (a `linear ramp'). We `bootstrap' the spectral correlations between the cusp form basis functions that correspond to a universal linear ramp and show that they are unique up to theory-dependent subleading corrections. The statistical treatment of cusp forms provides a natural avenue to fix the subleading corrections in a minimal way, which we observe leads to the same correlations as those described by the [torus]$\times$[interval] wormhole amplitude in AdS${}_3$ gravity.

Abstract:We sketch and emphasize the automatic emergence of a quantum potential Q in e.g. classical WDW type equations upon inserting a (Bohmian) complex wave function. The interpretation of Q in terms of momentum fluctuations via Fisher information and entropy ideas is discussed along with the essentially forced role of the amplitude squared as a probability density. We also review the constructions of Padmanabhan connecting entropy and the Einstein equations.

Abstract:We show that quaternion quantum mechanics has well-founded mathematical roots and can be derived from the model of the elastic continuum by French mathematician Augustin Cauchy, i.e., it can be regarded as representing the physical reality of elastic continuum. Starting from the Cauchy theory (classical balance equations for isotropic Cauchy-elastic material) and using the Hamilton quaternion algebra, we present a rigorous derivation of the quaternion form of the non- and relativistic wave equations. The family of the wave equations and the Poisson equation are a straightforward consequence of the quaternion representation of the Cauchy model of the elastic continuum. This is the most general kind of quantum mechanics possessing the same kind of calculus of assertions as conventional quantum mechanics. The problem of the Schrödinger equation, where imaginary ‘i’ should emerge, is solved. This interpretation is a serious attempt to describe the ontology of quantum mechanics, and demonstrates that, besides Bohmian mechanics, the complete ontological interpretations of quantum theory exists. The model can be generalized and falsified. To ensure this theory to be true, we specified problems, allowing exposing its falsity.
